Image
Sonequa Martin-Green reveals Star Trek: Discovery expected to run for 7 seasons before ending abruptly. Paramount+ allowed a coda to be filmed to wrap up the series, showing gratitude for Discovery's impact for growing the streaming platform. Martin-Green never imagined that Discovery's coda would jump years ahead into the 33rd century.

Sonequa Martin-Green was told Star Trek: Discovery would run for 7 seasons, and she explains how Discovery's series finale epilogue happened after Paramount+ announced season 5 would end the series. Star Trek: Discovery season 5 wrapped filming at the end of 2022, and the cast and crew expected to return for season 6. Are Discovery's Finale Twists Too Inside Star Trek?
Image
Warning: Contains Spoilers for Star Trek: Discovery's finale, "Life, Itself"

The big twists in the Star Trek: Discovery finale may have been too obscure for casual viewers to fully appreciate. The reveal that Doctor Kovich is actually Temporal Agent Daniels from Star Trek: Enterprise may have been lost on some viewers. The epilogue setting up an episode of Star Trek: Short Treks in Discovery's finale left some fans underwhelmed and craving a more satisfying ending.

There's an argument to be made that the big twists from the Star Trek: Discovery finale were too "inside baseball" and obscure to make the desired impact on the casual viewer. Written by Kyle Jarrow and Michelle Paradise, Discovery's finale, "Life, Itself" was both a sequel to Star Trek: The Next Generation season 6, episode 20, "The Chase" and the culmination of five seasons worth of adventures for Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green). 1 Star Trek: Discovery Ending Detail Makes Burnhams Son Like Kirk
Image
Star Trek: Discovery's ending reveals Leto Burnham-Booker as a young Starfleet Captain, comparable to Captain James T. Kirk's early career success. Leto follows in the footsteps of his mother, Captain and, later, Admiral Michael Burnham. Leto made Captain younger than Michael Burnham did, but Chris Pine's Kirk in Star Trek (2009) did it faster.

One detail from Star Trek: Discovery's ending makes Captain Leto Burnham-Booker (Sawandi Wilson), the son of Admiral Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), like Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) in Star Trek: The Original Series. Written by Kyle Jarrow and Michelle Paradise, and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi, Star Trek: Discovery's emotional coda warped the saga to the 33rd century, showing how Michael Burnham and Cleveland Booker (David Ajala) lived a happy life together. One big surprise is they have a fully grown son, Leto, who just became a Starfleet Captain.

Discoverys Finale Proves 5 Star Trek Seasons Is Not The New 7
Image
Warning: Contains Spoilers for Star Trek: Discovery's series finale, "Life, Itself"

Star Trek: Discovery's finale disproves the notion that five seasons are the new seven in the franchise. The Berman-era Star Trek shows had the freedom to end on their own terms, unlike Discovery and Lower Decks. Lower Decks will face a similar fate as Discovery, with its upcoming fifth season confirmed to be the last.

Recent developments in the wider franchise have led fans to state that five seasons of Star Trek are the new seven, but Star Trek: Discovery's finale disproves this notion. The Star Trek: Discovery finale, and its epilogue, brought the adventures of Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) to an end, but this wasn't the original plan. Discovery season 6 was in the planning stages before Paramount made the decision to cancel the show. That decision resulted in "Life, Itself", written by Kyle Jarrow and Michelle Paradise,...

Star Treks Original Progenitor & DS9s Changeling Salome Jens Explained
Image
Warning: Contains Spoilers for Star Trek: Discovery's finale, "Life, Itself".

Star Trek: Discovery explored Progenitor origins in season 5, linking back to Tng's classic episode "The Chase". Salome Jens played pivotal roles in Star Trek history, as both a Progenitor in Tng and the Female Changeling in DS9. Diversity was highlighted in Discovery by casting a new actor as a Progenitor, continuing Jens' contribution to the Star Trek universe.

All life in the Star Trek universe began with the Progenitors, an alien species originated by Star Trek: Deep Space Nine actor, Salome Jens. I Agree With Captain Burnham's Decision About Star Trek: Discovery Season 5's Treasure
Image
Warning: This article contains Spoilers for Star Trek: Discovery's series finale "Life, Itself"

Captain Burnham's choice to not use Progenitors' technology highlights Star Trek's core philosophy of celebrating diversity. Michael Burnham's character arc in Star Trek: Discovery season 5 focuses on self-acceptance and radical internal change. By not using the Progenitors' technology, Captain Burnham finds peace and acceptance in the simplicity of life on Sanctuary Four.

I agree with the decision that Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) makes about the Progenitors' technology in Star Trek: Discovery's series finale. Throughout Star Trek: Discovery season 5's high-stakes chase for the "greatest treasure the galaxy has ever known", reminders that the Progenitors' technology can resurrect the dead imply that someone will be brought back to life before Discovery's final scene. The best candidate is Breen scion L'ak (Elias Toufexis), as Moll (Eve Harlow) is hellbent on acquiring the Progenitor technology to revive her love.

Here's Why Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Didn't Feel Like A Proper Finale

You know the drill by now: This article contains major spoilers for the series finale of "Star Trek: Discovery."

"Discovery" is over; long live "Discovery." At the end of the day, the somewhat divisive "Trek" series managed to go out on its own terms (as /Film's Jacob Hall accurately foresaw in his review of the final season's premiere) and delivered a fitting sendoff for much of the established cast. We laughed, we cried, and we were kept fairly entertained by a planet-hopping race against time that dug deep into franchise lore and tied things together with the mysterious Progenitors. But as the credits rolled on the finale and we bid farewell one last time to characters like Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), Saru (Doug Jones), and all the rest, perhaps you were left with the same nagging feeling that I had: "Wait, that's it?"

As thrilling as these last several episodes were,...

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 episode 10 review | the anodyne send off to a frustrating odyssey
Image
Star Trek: Discovery’s journey comes to an end, and it leaves behind a sense of frustration. Spoilers lie ahead.

Nb: The following contains spoilers…

The end of Star Trek: Discovery arrives, then, not with a firework display of pop culture anticipation, but rather the whimper of a series that never translated beyond a highly protective core fanbase of viewers. You do or die with Discovery, it seems. Mine, in the end, has been a death by 60+ episodes.

The episode ‘Life, Itself’ by all accounts was never conceived as a series finale, rather Kyle Jarrow and Michelle Paradise’s episode, directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi, was meant to wrap up a fifth season. It provided in theory the biggest Discovery plotline yet – the search for the Progenitors, a long extinct race who seeded the known universe of life. It doesn’t get much bigger than Space Gods.

Yet what was promoted in the season premiere,...

Star Trek Discovery Ending Explained and How the Finale Connects to “Calypso”
Image
This Star Trek: Discovery article contains spoilers.

After five seasons, Star Trek: Discovery, the series that launched a new era of Star Trek programming on television, has come to an end with the finale “Life, Itself.” Leaning heavily on the science fiction action and prominently connecting with Star Trek elements introduced in the ‘90s, Discovery’s fifth and final season brought the adventures of Starfleet officer Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) to a satisfying close. That conclusion includes a coda that was added after the creative team learned Discovery would not be renewed for a sixth season. The additional scenes were filmed to provide the finale with greater closure.

At the helm of the fifth season was Michelle Paradise, who has been an executive producer on the series since the second season and co-showrunner, with series co-creator Alex Kurtzman, since Discovery season 3. Paradise recently sat down with Den of Geek to...

Star Trek: Discovery Explains Season 5’s Tribble Is Not A Threat
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 3 - "Jinaal"

Tribbles are no trouble on the USS Discovery in Star Trek: Discovery season 5. Discovery's Tribble was neutered so there is no threat of it breeding and taking over the ship. Tribbles can be safely kept as pets in Star Trek: Discovery season 5 after genetic alterations.

The sight of a Tribble aboard the USS Discovery should be alarming, but Star Trek: Discovery season 5 explained this Tribble is no trouble at all. Written by Kyle Jarrow and Lauren Wilkinson and directed by Andi Armaganian, Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 3, "Jinaal" brings the USS Discovery to Trill, where a clue to the ancient treasure of the Progenitors is hidden. Did Star Trek: Discovery Secretly Reveal An Unseen DS9 Alien?
Image
Warning: Contains Spoilers for Star Trek: Discovery, season 5, episode 3, "Jinaal".

Star Trek: Discovery hints at encountering the unseen alien race Tzenkethi, first mentioned in DS9. The Federation negotiates entry into Tzenkethi space, possibly interacting with a lizard delegate previously met by Saru. Discovery's treasure hunt leads to Tzenkethi space, potentially involving sabotage and a showdown with space dinosaurs.

Star Trek: Discovery may have just secretly introduced an unseen alien race from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, ahead of their mission to Tzenkethi space. The Tzenkethi were first mentioned in DS9's season 3 finale, "The Adversary", in which a Changeling impersonator attempted to trigger a war between the Federation and the unseen alien race. Robert Hewitt Wolfe, who co-wrote "The Adversary" with Ira Steven Behr has described the Tzenkethi as heavily armored lizards. While the Tzenkethi have recently played a big part in Idw's Star Trek comics, they have never been portrayed on screen,...

Dr. Culber faces consequences after Trill scientist Jinaal takes over his mind and body in Star Trek: Discovery season 5. Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz) will face "ramifications" for Trill scientist Jinaal taking over his mind and body in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, according to co-writer Kyle Jarrow. In Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 3, "Jinaal", written by Jarrow and Lauren Wilkinson and directed by Andi Armaganian, the next clue in the USS Discovery's hunt for the Progenitors' treasure led them to Trill. How Star Trek: Discovery's Trill Ritual Connects to DS9's Dax
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 3 - "Jinaal"

The latest clue in Star Trek: Discovery leads to a Trill symbiont named Jinaal Bix, creating a link to the Progenitors' life-creating technology. The zhian'tara ritual allows past Trill hosts to temporarily live through willing volunteers, offering insight into the nature of consciousness. The Trill's belief in the separation of mind and body may hold keys to understanding the Progenitors' technology and the origin of sentient life.

The search for the latest clue in Star Trek: Discovery season 5's treasure hunt involves a Trill ritual first seen with Lt. Commander Jadzia Dax (Terry Farrell) on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. 800 years before Star Trek: Discovery's 32nd century, Romulan scientist Dr. Vellek (Michael Copeland) laid the clues that will ultimately lead to the life-creating technology of the Progenitors. Star Trek: Discovery Reminds Us DS9 Made Dax Cool Because Trills Are Weird
Image
Warning: This article contains Spoilers for Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 3, "Jinaal"

Trills in Star Trek: Discovery pay homage to DS9's iconic Dax, but lack depth compared to previous hosts. Discovery's portrayal focuses on Trill Guardians and rituals, missing the societal complexity seen in Deep Space Nine. Jinaal Bix stands out as a multi-layered Trill character in Discovery, hinting at changes in Trill society over the centuries.

Star Trek: Discovery's weird and secretive Trills are a welcome reminder of how cool Lt. Jadzia Dax (Terry Farrell) was in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. In Discovery season 5, episode 3, "Jinaal", Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) heads to Trill to collect the next clue in the hunt for the Progenitors' treasure. Star Trek Points Out What’s Off About Discovery’s Starfleet Uniforms
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Discovery, Season 5, Episode 3 - "Jinaal"

The 32nd-century Star Trek: Discovery uniforms are formal but modern. Starfleet uniform evolution incorporates designs with division colors and rank insignia. The most practical and stylish Starfleet uniforms for missions are the red tunic and Tng later season styles.

Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz) hosts an 800-year-old Trill consciousness named Jinaal Bix in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 3, "Jinaal", who points out something odd about the 32nd-century Starfleet uniforms. Written by Kyle Jarrow and Lauren Wilkinson and directed by Andi Armagian, "Jinaal" sends the USS Discovery crew to Trill for the next clue to finding the Progenitors’ technology. Jinaal leads Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Cleveland Booker (David Ajala) on a dangerous journey to prove their worthiness and retrieve the next clue.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5's Trill Clue Is a Tos Throwback
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 3 - "Jinaal"

Star Trek episodes use monsters to judge character morality - a theme repeated in Discovery and Lower Decks. Jinaal's test in Star Trek: Discovery requires Burnham and Book to display understanding and respecting different life forms. Book and Burnham used empathy to pass. Spock showed the same type of empathy and respect for the Horta in Star Trek: The Original Series.

The answer to Star Trek: Discovery's test for Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Cleveland Booker (David Ajala) on the Trill homeworld is a throwback to a classic episode of Star Trek: The Original Series. In Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 3, "Jinaal", written by Kyle Jarrow and Lauren Wilkinson and directed by Andi Armaganian, Jinaal, the Trill symbiont occupying the body of Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz), insists the next piece of the puzzle is on a path...

Star Trek: Discovery Never Knew What To Do With Adira & Gray
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 3 - “Jinaal”

Star Trek: Discovery failed to make Adira and Gray's romance work due to a focus on Adira's character. Gray's development suffered as he wasn't given the main character status that Adira had in Discovery. The breakup of Adira and Gray in season 5 was sad but necessary for the show's narrative progression.

Star Trek: Discovery never figured out what to do with Adira (Blu del Barrio) and Gray (Ian Alexander), making their breakup in season 5 necessary. Written by Kyle Jarrow and Lauren Wilkinson and directed by Andi Armaganian, Discovery season 5, episode 3, "Jinaal," saw the USS Discovery travel to Trill to get another clue in their search for the Progenitor's technology. Although most of the episode was focused on Captain Micheal Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Cleveland Booker (David Ajala), the plot also allowed Adira to reunite with Gray after a long separation...

Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 3 - "Jinaal"

Discovery season 5 continues the chase for Progenitors' technology, introduced in Tng's "The Chase". Janaal reveals how Federation handled Progenitor discovery, keeping technology hidden for peace. The Federation's past missteps led to hesitation in trusting Starfleet with powerful technology.

Star Trek: The Next Generation's "The Chase" introduced some big ideas to the Star Trek universe that Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is finally following up on. Discovery season 5 involves a literal chase in Star Trek's 32nd century, as Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the crew of the USS Discovery race to find the Progenitors' treasure before the villainous Moll (Eve Harlow) and L'ak (Elias Toufexis). Although unnamed at the time, the Progenitors were first introduced in Tng season 6, episode 20, "The Chase," when Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) helped uncover a message left by one of the ancient humanoids.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Will Be 'Pure Adventure,' Teases Star
Image
Star Trek: Discovery star Elias Toufexis recently teased that the fifth and final season of the Paramount+ sci-fi series will be "pure adventure" from start to finish.

The actor, who joined Discovery Season 5 in the antagonistic role of L'ak, opened up during a conversation with TrekCulture (via ComicBookMovie.com) about how he appreciates Discovery for always taking "giant leaps" and not being afraid to shake things up each season. "One thing I always appreciated about [Discovery] was, 'Let’s take these giant leaps of ideas and take these giant leaps'… Like, let’s throw it way in the future [in season 3]. Why not? And then you get all these different ships and what’s the Federation like, and all that stuff. The Burn was fascinating, whether you liked how it ended, whatever, it was a really interesting idea."
