Part of the unique culture of surfing is the music, which is why Make or Break turned to composer Cj Mirra. Mirra has contributed to a number of surf-related projects since he was first...

The First Time: Pro Surfer Stephanie Gilmore
Stephanie Gilmore in Stephanie in the Water (2014)
While Stephanie Gilmore’s high school friends stressed over choosing college majors, the New South Wales, Australia native faced her own future with uncommon certainty. “I remember just having a really strong feeling that surfing, and professional surfing, was what I was going to do for the rest of my life,” she recalls in Rolling Stone’s “The First Time” video.

Seven World Titles later, there is no disputing that Gilmore, now 31, proved her teenage-self correct. Gilmore has dominated the sport since her arrival on the scene. She even claimed...

Stephanie Gilmore in Stephanie in the Water (2014)
Australian surfer and seven-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore is in good shape to qualify for the first Olympic surf team ever in 2020, but surfing’s not the only thing on her mind. In addition to hauling her board and other gear on tour, Gilmore travels with a guitar from her treasured collection: maybe a Fender Jazzmaster or a vintage Epiphone Crestwood that’s faded from Pelham blue to, fittingly, surf green. “I’m gonna be drowning in a sea of guitars one day,” she says. “I just love buying them.

Exclusive: The Universe Flips Upside Down In Trailer For Surfing Documentary 'Stephanie In The Water'
In sports, you can have it all one moment, and be left with nothing the next. A corner kick will find the net, or maybe an outfielder will leap and snag the ball that was going to be a home run—it's these kind of things that come with the territory of being an athlete. But what happens when it's the outside world that changes thing? That's the question explored in the upcoming documentary, "Stephanie In The Water." Directed by Ava Warbrick, the film chronicles Australian professional surfer and world champion Stephanie Gilmore, who became the first surfer of any gender to win four consecutive world titles beginning with her rookie year. Everything seemed to be going her way until one evening in 2010, she was attacked outside her home. It shone a different kind of spotlight on the athlete, and the doc explores her career, surf culture and how she...

Rafael Nadal Reigns Over Roger Federer at 2011 Espy Awards
Rafael Nadal has tasted victory over Roger Federer once again. This time, it came from off-court. The world's No. 2 tennis player bested over the former world's No. 1 at the 19th Annual Espy Awards as he was announced the winner of Best Male Tennis Player on Wednesday night, July 13.

While he successfully took over the title from Roger, 25-year-old Nadal didn't sweep clean his nominations. The Spanish star lost the Best Male Athlete trophy to Dallas Mavericks star player Dirk Nowitzki, who became the first NBA player to win the category since Michael Jordan in 1993.

One of the big winners, Dirk said in his acceptance speech, "I'm so humbled and honored by this. It's been an unreal year for all of us on the Mavericks." The 33-year-old athlete, whose NBA team won Best Team, has also scored another kudo as he beat the likes of Kobe Bryant and LeBron James for Best NBA Player.
