AI Brings Neurological Problems in Near-Future Brazil in ‘Future Future’ (Exclusive Karlovy Vary Teaser)
Image
Something is wrong in Brazilian filmmaker Davi Pretto’s fourth feature, Future Future, which world premieres in the Proxima Competition program of the 59th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (Kviff) on Wednesday, July 9. The title is a nod to the setting: a rainy near-future Brazil where AI advances coincide with a new neurological syndrome.

“A 40-year-old amnesic man named K is taken in by a 60-year-old lonely clickworker on the poor side of a rainy Brazilian city,” reads a synopsis for the movie. “After using an addictive AI device in a course for people with the strange [neurological] syndrome, K embarks on a tragic and absurd journey to find where he truly belongs.” AI threats, social inequality, and cognitive disruption are dissected through this sci-fi lens.

Described as “an unconventional political lo-fi sci-fi shot in guerrilla style for 16 days” on a tiny budget, the independent Brazilian production survived...

Karlovy Vary Film Festival to Show New Films From Josh O’Connor, Andrea Riseborough
Image
The upcoming Josh O’Connor film “Rebuilding” will screen as part of the 2025 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival along with multiple world premieres, Kviff organizers announced on Tuesday.

The festival announced 11 films in its Crystal Globe competition section, but added that the section will include a 12th film from Iran. Artistic director Karel Och said in a release that the announcement of this final feature has been postponed until closer to the festival out of consideration for “the safety of its makers.”

“Rebuilding,” which makes its international premiere at the festival, immerses us in the life of a rancher (O’Connor) whose ranch has been destroyed in a wildfire and must now pick up the pieces in his life. It’s written and directed by Max Walker-Silverman, who previously made his feature debut with the delicate drama “A Love Song” in 2022. “Rebuilding” previously premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival...

The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (Kviff) on Tuesday unveiled the lineup of the main competition and other sections for its 59th edition, including a competition movie from Iran whose title and creators will only be shared closer to the fest “for the safety of its makers.”

Exclusive: The trailer for Continent has landed ahead of the world premiere of the horror-drama at the Munich International Film Festival on Thursday. A Brazilian, French, and Argentina coproduction, the movie is written and directed by Davi Pretto.

A car weaves through Brazilian countryside and one of its passengers remarks that it looks like the South of France. “I think it looks sad,” replies the car’s other occupant, Amanda (Olivia Torres). It transpires she is on a journey back to the isolated village in which she grew up. Amanda’s father is dying, and as events unfold, she becomes involved in a strange inheritance linked to a mysterious secret held by the villagers.

“If I were you, I’d get out of here,” Amanda is advised as the tension builds. “This place is harming you,” someone else tells her.

Munich Film Festival 2024 secures six world premieres of international titles
Image
For the second year running, the Munich International Film Festival has secured six world premieres as part of its strategy to position the event as an attractive launchpad for international titles.

Luxembourg-born actress Desirée Nosbusch will be in Munich with her directorial debut Poison, starring Trine Dyrholm and Tim Roth.

The drama about an estranged couple who meet up nine years after their son’s death at the cemetery where he is buried is an adaptation of the Dutch dramatist Lot Vekemans’ much acclaimed 2009 play Gif (poison in Dutch). Poison is a co-production between Nosbusch’s Deal Productions, Dutch company...

‘Six Months,’ ‘The Castle,’ ‘Hesitation Wound’ Win San Sebastian Forum, Wip Latam, Wip Europe
Image
Mexico’s Bruno Santamaría, Argentina’s Martín Benchimol and Turkey’s Selman Nacar proved three of the big winners among San Sebastian Industry Awards, announced Wednesday.

João Paulo Miranda, already a young star on Brazil’s film scene after “Memory House,” meanwhile won the Ikusmira Berriak Award.

A Chicago Golden Hugo winner for doc feature “Things We Dare Not Do,” Santamaría swept two awards at the fest’s Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum, a Mecca for Latin America auteurs and their producers seeking vital co-production partners as state funding prospects have plunged across the region.

Also written by Santamaría, its heavily autobiographical story, set in the ’90s, follows 10-year-old boy Bru, whose father is diagnosed with HIV, sparking his parents break up.“I want to film the glances and conversations that my parents had in silence and which I couldn’t observe as a child and find some sense [in what happened],” Santamaría told Variety.

San Sebastian’s pix-in-post showcases, which have launched notable movies – Sebastian Lelio’s “Gloria” – and notable directors – Jayro Bustamante, introducing his debut “Ixcanul” – unspools in 2022, with the screenings of six Wip Latam titles taking place over Sept. 19 – 21. Wip Europe, with four titles, runs on Sept. 19 and 20.

In the mix is an awaited title from Chile, “Penal Cordillera,” directed by Felipe Carmona, produced by Dominga Sotomayor and Omar Zuñiga and sold by Luxbox, and “A Strange Path,” from Brazil’s Guto Parente, whose “The Cannibal Club,” acquired by Uncork’d Entertainment, made a stir by portraying a Brazil in which the rich literally eat the poor.

Also competing in Wip Latam is “A House in the Country,” from Davi Pretto whose “Rifle” – his second film, after the impressive “Castanha” – premiered at 67th Berlinale Forum and won the Grand Prize at Jeonju Intl. Film Festival.

The highest profile title in Wip Europe is “Hesitation Wound,...

Jeonju festival crowns Brazil's 'Rifle', France's 'The Park'

The 18th Jeonju International Film Festival (Jiff) has crowned its award winners for 2017, with Davi Pretto’s Rifle taking the Grand Prize worth KW20m ($18,000) in the international competition.

The Brazilian film shows what happens when a rich landowner starts buying land in a remote area and in response, a young man feels his only protection from this is his rifle.

Thanking the fest and jury, Pretto noted this was the first time he had shown the film in Asia.

”It was amazing to meet the audience and show our film, and incredible to meet our colleagues - our new friends now - from all over the planet,” he said.

Also in the international competition, the best picture prize, a.k.a. the Woosuk Award which comes with $10,000, went to French film The Park, directed by Damien Manivel. He echoed...

Rifle (2016)
'Rifle': Film Review | Berlin 2017
Rifle (2016)
A potential nail-biter of a scenario suffers from some highly minimalist storytelling in Rifle, which marks the second feature of Brazilian director Davi Pretto (‘Castanha’). With an effective title and promising pitch, this tale of a lonely farmhand who fights back against wealthy land-grabbers could have been a solidly engaging social thriller, and one with enough pyrotechnics to keep one riveted. But despite a few explosive moments and lots of remarkable scenery, the film’s all-too naturalistic approach and underwhelming performances will make it a tough sell outside of the festival circuit.

It takes a good half-hour until the eponymous weapon...

Teaser for Pa short Waiting Room (Quarto De Espera)
This 13 minute short by Bruno Carboni and Davi Pretto has been running the fest circuit for a while, and while unfortunately the teaser shows very little, I'm excited to see the full thing. Hopefully we can get a copy soon.

A young man wearing a gas mask wanders through the deserted streets of a crumbling city. Only a few people - all male - still roam the streets and frequent the coffee shops. Their interaction is minimal and marked by sudden and unprovoked outbursts of violence. Everyone is seemingly waiting for an undisclosed something. It seems to be the next-to-last stop on a decadent ride. In many ways reminiscent of Frank in Donnie Darko (but with a gas mask standing in for Frank's bunny mask), the anonymous young man is an existentialist hero in a world where man has been robbed of all purpose. Carboni and Pretto convey a mode...
