Sibling Rivalries, Sci-Fi Prophets and Queer Camboys: 10 Bold Visions Compete for Edinburgh’s $67,000 Sean Connery Prize
Image
From haunted neuroscientists to ghostly patriarchs and doomed mining towns, the 10 world premieres up for this year’s £50,000 Sean Connery Prize for Feature Filmmaking Excellence deliver no shortage of striking worlds.

Presented as part of Edinburgh International Film Festival’s 78th edition, the titles competing for the audience-voted award are fiercely original – many of them debut features – and point to a generation of filmmakers pushing into new terrain emotionally, politically and aesthetically.

“Our approach is always about thinking about what our audiences are looking for,” Paul Ridd told Variety, “and how expansive we can be in terms of the diversity of the program as a whole.”

That boldness shows in “Mortician,” a deadpan yet deeply charged Iranian exile story shot entirely on a phone, and “Novak,” a psychological sci-fi from Greece that evokes both the celebration of a guru and fringe YouTube rabbit holes. “Best Boy,” from Canada’s Jesse Noah Klein,...

Dylan O'Brien's New 96% Rotten Tomatoes Psychological Dark Comedy Unveils First Trailer Following Festival Controversy
Image
Grief has long been an interesting theme that the movie industry has explored over the past decades. Whether it's drama, comedy, action, or even horror, there really is no shortage of films about such a complex emotion and experience. But the specific story of a twin grappling with the death of their other half (someone they’ve always shared life with) remains rarely explored, if at all. That's the concept bravely explored in Twinless, which first premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. Following the leak of some scenes from the movie just a few months ago, the Dylan O'Brien-starring comedy drama has finally unveiled its official trailer. Set to hit theaters on September 5, the thought-provoking flick is written and directed by James Sweeney (Straight Up), who also stars in the film as one of the twinless twins — or so it seems.

The trailer for Twinless opens with O’Brien’s character,...

‘Twinless’ Trailer: James Sweeney and Dylan O’Brien’s Queer Bromance Delighted (and Disturbed) Sundance
Image
Writer/director James Sweeney’s “Twinless” made headlines at Sundance earlier this year when pirated scenes from the queer dark comedy leaked on social media off the festival’s online platform. But don’t let those headlines — and IndieWire wrote one of them — lead you to think that’s the most shocking twist related to one of the festival’s most delightfully screwed-up and mordantly funny movies.

It’s led by viral “Ponyboi” and “Teen Wolf” star Dylan O’Brien in a decidedly grown-up role — two, actually — here as grieving brother Roman, who’s lost his twin Rocky (also O’Brien) in a freak accident. But he gets a potential new brother, played by Sweeney himself as a calculating and dry-witted twink who may have something to do with Rocky’s sudden death. Especially after an ill-fated hookup.

Just because it’s been a while since we’ve seen the film,...

‘Twinless’ Trailer: Dylan O’Brien and James Sweeney Become Chosen Brothers in Family Dramedy
Image
Roadside Attractions has released the first trailer for “Twinless,” the Audience Award-winning dark comedy from James Sweeney that debuted at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival.

The movie stars Sweeney alongside Dylan O’Brien as two young men who meet at a twin bereavement support group and forge an unlikely friendship. Each finds that the other fills their missing half, and they become inseparable. However, as the friendship expands, it becomes evident that both are holding secrets, some of them dark and dangerous. It is a story about identity, grief and the strange nature of friendship.

A writer, director, producer and actor, Sweeney came to prominence with his debut feature, “Straight Up,” which premiered at Outfest in 2019 and received a limited theatrical release from Strand Releasing in 2020. His singular brand of queer comedy is both sweet and intense, with relatable characters and unexpected twists.

Republic Pictures developed “Twinless” with Sweeney and David Permut serving as producers.

‘Fucktoys’ Review: Annapurna Sriram’s Saucy and Singular Sex Comedy Tests the Limits of Good Taste
Image
Starting with its title, “Fucktoys” announces itself as an irreverent and audacious attempt at making something different from mainstream American movies. Making her debut as writer, director and star, force-of-nature Annapurna Sriram manages to succeed in delivering a singular vision in all aspects of filmmaking, though not without its influences. The story of a Southern sex worker’s bizarre adventures trying to reverse a curse remains witty and watchable for its entire running time, juggling an abundance of strange characters and story threads en route to a surreal and unexpectedly heartfelt ending.

With its sexually frank dialogue and situations, satire of celebrity and media and drug cultures, the good-taste-defying project is guaranteed to offend large swaths of the public, though many will find enough to enjoy here to make it a cult phenomenon. Sriram commands the material from the opening frames. A long, widescreen shot of two characters on a barge floating in the bayou,...

Yellowjackets (2021)
Yellowjackets has been renewed for season 4
Yellowjackets (2021)
For the last month, fans of the Showtime series Yellowjackets (read our review of season 2 Here) have been waiting to hear news on whether or not the show will continue, following the April 13th finale of the third season. Now, we have the answer – and that is, yes, of course, Yellowjackets is getting a season 4. As Deadline reports, the renewal was a no-brainer because the season 3 finale was “the most-streamed Yellowjackets episode in series history with 3 million global viewers in seven days across linear and streaming on Paramount+ with Showtime.” Parent company Paramount Global also reports that season 3 was the series’ most-watched to date, as well as the most engaged on social media.

Yellowjackets is described as “equal parts survival epic, horror story, and coming-of-age drama.” The story centers on a team of wildly talented high school girls soccer players who become the (un)lucky survivors of a plane crash deep in the Ontario wilderness.

‘F—toys’ Multi-Hyphenate Annapurna Sriram Talks Non-Binary Co-Star’s Passport Scare & “Rebellious Nature” Of Her SXSW Winner
Image
Writer, director and actress Annapurna Sriram’s celluloid fever dream has won over audiences at SXSW.

With her feature directorial debut Fucktoys, which won the fest’s Special Jury Award for a Multi-Hyphenate, Sriram told Deadline she hopes to make right-wing audiences “accidentally fall in love” with her queer, diverse cast of characters.

Sriram stars in her 16mm debut as AP, a fun-loving dominatrix who learns from a tarot reader (Big Freedia) that she’s been cursed, and the only way to lift the curse is to come up with $1,000 and sacrifice a baby lamb. Reuniting with her ex Danni (Sadie Scott), the pair hops around Trashtown to earn the fee while encountering some peculiar characters along the way.

“I sort of wrote the script out of feeling like I just want to be in a John Waters movie or a Gregg Araki movie or a Jim Jarmusch movie,” said Sriram.

At SXSW, Sophia Bush, Jeremy O. Harris, Jaboukie Young-White & Zoë Chao Champion LGBTQ Resistance & “The Queering Of Filmmaking”
Image
Although LGBTQ representation was few and far in between among the headliners at this year’s SXSW, several indie darlings broke the industry’s cis-heteronormative mold to stand out.

From Special Jury Award winner Fucktoys, multi-hyphenate Annapurna Sriram’s bold celluloid fever dream of a feature debut, to The True Beauty of Being Bitten by a Tick, co-writer/director Pete Ohs’ captivating model for cooperative filmmaking, there’s a glimmer of hope that the future of the industry lies in the hands of a new generation of marginalized folk with the right amount of passion, vision and ingenuity.

While catching up with Sophia Bush about her upcoming One Tree Hill revival in the works at Netflix, the actress emphasized the importance of LGBTQ representation in media as the Trump administration continues to dismantle Dei.

“I think 2025 sucks for everyone, to be clear, but what I think is worrisome, particularly for us,...

‘F*cktoys’ Review: A Sex Worker Tries to Break a Mystical Curse in Annapurna Sriram’s Messy and Exciting Genre Mash-Up
Image
With a title like “Fucktoys,” Annapurna Sriram’s directorial debut boldly announces its wild intentions. A provocative name like that has been known to backfire, especially as it can over-inflate one’s expectations for the gonzo filmmaking they’re about to witness. But Sriram’s movie — a grotesque odyssey through a place called Trashtown, which has shades of New Orleans and a hint of Los Angeles — is at least impressively strange. It’s the kind of project that, despite some flaws, allows Sriram to stake her claim as a filmmaker to watch, with a distinctive voice that mashes up rockabilly aesthetics with Tarot mysticism and an incredible dig at James Franco. This is the kind of thing you want to see at a festival like SXSW: Messy, but wholly original in its genre mashup.

As an actress, Sriram appeared on the likes of “Billions” and “The Blacklist,” shows that are tonally miles apart from “Fucktoys.

How far would you go to lift a deadly curse?

Ahead of the film’s world premiere at this year’s SXSW, Annapurna Sriram’s “Fucktoys” has unveiled its trailer exclusively to Variety, teasing a grindhouse adventure through a town named Trashtown, USA. AP immerses herself in the underbelly of Trashtown to earn the money she needs to live another day.

‘Mom’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Emily Hampshire, François Arnaud, Christian Convery, Tristan D. Lalla, Cat Lemieux, Erika Rosenbaum, Mariah Inger | Written by Adam O’Brien, Philip Kalin-Hajdu | Directed by Adam O’Brien

Meredith is a struggling mother abandoned by her family and partner after the appalling death of their newborn son. Alone in her house after separating, she becomes more and more isolated, unaware that the death of her baby has caused the birth of something far more sinister. An entity conceived from tragedy that is determined to make her relive over and over again the darkest moments of her existence and keep her family forever torn apart.

Mom is another heavy-handed look at post-partum depression wrapped up in the skin of a genre film – in this case a haunted house film. It’s something we’ve seen plenty of times before, and the filmmakers here don’t really try and stray away from cliche.

Mom (2024) Review
Image
Meredith (Emily Hampshire) and Jared (François Arnaud) arrive home with their newborn son Alex but their situation is far from a picture of domestic bliss as Meredith struggles with being a new mother and Jared focuses on his busy work schedule. A terrible tragedy is just around the corner and a sinister presence in the house leaves Meredith fighting not for her sanity but her life…

Adam O’Brien chiller delivers on all of the creaky floorboards, spectral voices and creeping around in the dark you’d expect from this kind of movie but the focus is squarely on Meredith and her fragile psychological state. The framing of many of the shots, coupled with the effective sound design, brings home just how the world seems to be closing in on her.

In the lead role, Emily Hampshire is mesmerising. Those of us already acquainted with her comedic chops on Schitt’s Creek...

Mom review – neonatal horror leaves new mother in nightmare of guilt and terror
Emily Hampshire
Debut feature does its best to keep things feeling supernatural as woman faced with impossible parenting demands slides into psychosis

Descending fully inside postnatal depression and psychosis, this horror film blends hallucination, premonition, memory and flashback; what it loses in storytelling precision it makes up for in desperate incarceration within one new mother’s headspace.

As soon as she comes home, Meredith (Emily Hampshire) is scrubbing her own birth discharge off the floor. While husband Jared (François Arnaud) is unexpectedly delighted at fatherhood, her new role chafes at an existential level. Son Alex won’t settle in her hands, Jared pushes her to take care of the house while she’s busy expressing milk and, rather than dealing with a burning meal, she smashes her smoke detector. “It’s better to accept you need to try, than be ashamed you need to try,” says Meredith’s therapist of her misfiring maternal affections.

Supernatural Horror ‘Bury the Devil,’ Shot in One Take, Lands at Blue Finch for Global Sales (Exclusive)
Image
U.K. outfit Blue Finch Films has acquired worldwide sales rights to “Bury the Devil,” a one-shot supernatural horror-thriller that recently wrapped production at an isolated location in Canada.

The supernatural-tinged home invasion tale centers on a nurse who discovers her latest patient may be harboring dark secrets. The film was written by John Petrizzi and Brad Hodson, with veteran genre producers Philip Kalin-Hajdu and Benoit Beaulieu (“Turbo Kid”) shepherding the project.

Director Adam O’Brien opted for an ambitious single-take approach to ratchet up the tension. “This film depicts the most harrowing 90 minutes of our protagonist’s life, and I felt that the most visceral way to really feel this was to do a single-shot film,” O’Brien said. “We are with her every step and mis-step she takes – through the unravelling of the mystery to the horror of her discovery. It’s a fun, twisty roller-coaster ride that puts a new spin on exorcisms.

Yellowjackets season 3 trailer lets the bodies hit the floor ahead of February premiere date
Image
Fans of the Showtime series Yellowjackets (read our review of season 2 Here) have been patiently waiting to see the bonus episode that was supposed to air sometime between the second and third seasons… but the wait for that is going to be longer than expected, because the decision has been made to hold off on the bonus episode and have Yellowjackets season 3 premiere on February 14th. With that date just a few weeks away, a full trailer has arrived online and you can watch it in the embed above. The images are accompanied by the sounds of the song “Bodies” (as in “let the bodies hit the floor”), a song I will always associate with the Jason X trailer.

Yellowjackets is described as “equal parts survival epic, horror story, and coming-of-age drama.” The story centers on a team of wildly talented high school girls soccer players who become the (un...

Indie Psychological Horror 'Mom' Trailer About Post-Natal Depression
Image
"Am I a bad mother?" Uh oh. Dark Star Pictures has unveiled the official trailer for Mom, an indie horror film ready for release in February. This first premiered at FrightFest Glasgow last year - and is out on VOD in February if anyone wants to give it a look. Meredith, her husband Jared, and their young son Alex face unspeakable terror in the wake of a family tragedy. The tagline: "A mother's love never dies." Struggling with postnatal depression & feeling misunderstood by her husband, Meredith begins to experience terrifying visions foreshadowing an ultimate tragedy - ending up stuck in a nightmarish loop ruled by a malevolent force. Mom stars Emily Hampshire as Meredith, the titular "Mom" in this story, with François Arnaud, Christian Convery, Tristan D. Lalla, Cat Lemieux, and Erika Rosenbaum. This looks creepy but it also looks like another seriously underlit, uninteresting, fairly boring horror film that'll be forgotten quickly.

Frightfest Glasgow 2024: ‘Mom’ Review
