Following on from the relative success of found-footage horror flick V/H/S earlier this year, comes the sequel – once more bringing together a collection of filmmakers to each to present their own horror vignette. Following an almost identical formula, V/H/S 2 is harmless, enjoyable fun – yet, much like first, it pushes no boundaries and lacks distinctly in ingenuity and innovation. Oh, and it’s not very scary either.
When private investigators (Laurence Michael Levine, Kelsy Abbott) go on the hunt for a missing student (L.C. Holt), they find themselves at his derelict flat, where a collection of disturbing VHS tapes lie, waiting to be watched. As part of their ongoing investigation, the pair decide to watch the cassettes, much to their evident displeasure. Amongst the harrowing, sinister videos, we have Adam Wingard’s ‘Phase I Clinical Trials’, whereby a man (played by Wingard himself) is given a new...

[This is a re-post of my review from the 2013 SXSW Film Festival. V/H/S/2 opens today in limited release.] The horror anthology sequel V/H/S/2 is a mixed bag, both in terms of the horror shorts it presents and the identity the franchise is trying to acquire. Arriving a year after its predecessor, it's clear that V/H/S/2 is meant to be the first of what should be an ongoing series where fan-favorite indie directors step behind the camera to deliver a horror short. The sequel attempts to reduce the flabbier aspects of the original, but it also feels more standardized and therefore less exciting. Additionally, two of the four shorts come across as underdeveloped or rushed. But the ones that work are worth the price of admission, and make the strongest case for the existence of a V/H/S franchise. The first V/H/S wasted time following a group of jerks before finally getting them to a spooky house where they watched demented found-footage...

Improved Frequencies: Sequel to Found Footage Anthology Film an Improved Bag of Goodies
While last year’s horror anthology, VHS, was an entertaining enough horror film compilation featuring work from some of the brightest new names working in the genre, it featured a rather convoluted unifying structure and perhaps a tad too many unremarkable entries. This time around, a sequel, V/H/S/2 (so named for the advanced VHS format which improved luminance and picture quality), brings in some new names (with Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett representing the only directors to return from the first venture), less entries, and a somewhat better written framework than its predecessor.
This time around, our unifying framework consists of two private eye investigators who are hired to find a missing college student by the boy’s mother. Convinced he’s most likely just drunk and passed out somewhere, they break into his home...

Director Jason Eisener talks about his Slumber Party Alien Abduction short in V/H/S/2, currently available on VOD and debuting in theaters July 12
It isn't often that there are two horror anthologies in one year, but 2013 must be an exception with this spring's The ABCs of Death and the terrifying V/H/S/2, currently available on VOD formats and debuting in theaters July 12. Director Jason Eisener, who broke out on the scene in 2011 with the cult classic Hobo with a Shotgun, was actually involved in both those anthologies. His V/H/S/2 short, Slumber Party Alien Abduction, is just as crazy as it sounds, and, like the rest of these segments, have to be seen to be believed. I recently had the chance to speak with Jason Eisener over the phone about his involvement in this project. Here's what he had to say.
I was a huge fan of the first movie.

Directors/writers: Simon Barrett, Jason Eisener, Gareth Evans, Gregg Hale, Eduardo Sánchez, Timo Tjahjanto, John Davies, Jamie Nash and Adam Wingard. Cast: Kelsy Abbott, Hannah Al Rashid, Fachry Albar, Oka Antara and Devon Brookshire. There is something to be said about horror anthologies of late; they are short and sweet. The ABC's of Death (2012) offered dozens of tales in a short time frame, late last year. Now, V/H/S/2, the sequel to 2012's V/H/S, brings five tales in under ninety minutes. The longest in this feature clocks in at thirty minutes ("Safe Haven") and each story has something unique to offer. Shot found footage style, via several creative ways, V/H/S/2 manages to be uniquely compelling, while including several scare worthy moments. It would be best to discuss each episode from best to worse. The best short is titled "Safe Haven." Interestingly enough, the director of...

One of the highlights of V/H/S/2 for this writer had to be Jason Eisener’s “Alien Abduction Slumber Party,” which follows a group of pre-teens who must fight off malicious aliens who aren’t looking for any sleepover buddies- just victims.

Inside a darkened house looms a column of TVs littered with VHS tapes, a pagan shrine to forgotten analog gods. The screens crackle and pop endlessly with monochrome vistas of static-white noise permeating the brain and fogging concentration. But you must fight the urge to relax: this is no mere movie night. Those obsolete spools contain more than just magnetic tape. They are imprinted with the very soul of evil.

The horror anthology has received a fair bit of new blood lately with two high-profile effort V/H/S and The ABCs of Death both arriving on a huge wave of hype in horror circles but ended up raining a shower of disappointing poop over us instead. Both indulged in the worst of what this genre’s filmmakers seem to think fans want, splashes of misogyny, gore purely for gore’s sake and the same old story repeated ad infinitum with the same old scares played the same old ways. The insanely quick turnaround of V/H/S 2 (or as its original brilliant title had it, S-v/H/S) was cause for concern but with filmmakers more exciting than those involved in the first instalment,...

Ritualistic suicides, hideous creatures, and lots of blood and nudity can be found in the red band trailer for V/H/S/2. This follow-up to last year's horror anthology V/H/S features a much different story involving pagan worship, along with a fresh crew of directors, including Simon Barrett (You're Next), Jason Eisener (Hobo with a Shotgun), and Gareth Evans (The Raid: Redemption) clickHere to watch the explicit red band trailer, only if you're over the age of 18, then check out the latest photos.
