15 Best War TV Shows Of All Time, Ranked
Image
Television shows thrive on high drama, and there's pretty much nothing more high drama than an actual war. From medieval clashes to modern infantry showdowns, these conflicts have been a popular topic of on-screen narratives for decades. Sometimes, these shows reflect the sacrifice of previous generations. But often, they -- like many of the greatest war films of all time -- serve to highlight the horrors and futility of war.

Either way, these war series don't scrimp on the emotional side of things, not just focusing on actual battle sequences (although we often get plenty of that), but the more intimate ramifications of individuals whose countries are at war. And although the majority of these popular series are, naturally, dramas with a heavy action leaning, there are also a surprising number of sitcoms about war, which frequently use gallows humor or surreal comedy to showcase the inherent absurdity of these conflicts.

Image

The letter, signed by names such as Mark Ruffalo, Guy Pearce, Ralph Fiennes, Melissa Barrera, Yorgos Lanthimos, Javier Bardem, Hannah Einbinder, Pedro Almodóvar, David Cronenberg, Alfonso Cuarón, Mike Leigh, Alex Gibney, Viggo Mortensen, Cynthia Nixon, Tessa Ross and many more, also called out the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences’ for its “lack of support” for “No Other Land” co-director Hamdan Ballal.

Just three weeks after winning the Oscar for the documentary, Ballal was assaulted by settlers and kidnapped by the Israeli army. After being criticized for its silence over the incident, AMPAS eventually publicly apologized. “We are ashamed of such passivity,...

Why Didnt Tatiana Maslany Appear in Orphan Black: Echoes Season 1?
Image
Set decades after the events in Orphan Black, the newest projections from the clone club came to life in Orphan Black: Echoes. Throughout the entirety of its run, the new series offered interesting links to the flagship series. A new cloning conspiracy, the first season of Echoes includes appearances from flagship series favorites, Felix (Jordan Gavaris) and Delphine (Evelyne Brochu). However, fans were interested in seeing original series star Tatiana Maslany who played Sarah Manning, make a cameo performance in the new series. Ultimately, Maslany didn't feature but this wasn't for a lack of trying.

Does Sarah Know Kira Made Printouts on ‘Orphan Black: Echoes’? Creator Weighs In
Image
[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Orphan Black: Echoes Season 1 Episode 9 “Attracting Awful Things.”] Another star from the original Orphan Black pops up in the latest Echoes episode: Evelyne Brochu, reprising her role as Delphine! Felix (Jordan Gavaris) called after he learned that Kira (Keeley Hawes) made printouts of her late wife, Eleanor. The backstory is quickly laid out when Jules (Amanda Fix), a younger version whom Kira did not print out, asks how she’s connected: Delphine is her aunt. She’s the wife of Cosima (Tatiana Maslany), who is a clone like Kira’s mother Sarah (also Maslany). They’re now in their 60s. Delphine at first says that Cosima wanted to be there but is working, and so Delphine is here to help with the latest problems. But later, Kira tells Delphine she knows that Cosima’s not there because she’s mad ...

1 Orphan Black: Echoes Story Perfectly Set Up A Major Character Returning After 7 Years
Image
Orphan Black: Echoes season 1 introduces a now-adult Dr. Kira Manning and sets the stage for a major character's return. The spinoff follows amnesiac Lucy, but Kira's connection to the original series is revealed in the finale. Kira's relationship with Charlotte, a younger Project Leda clone, could be further explored in the spinoff, making Maslany's return as an adult Charlotte more intriguing.

The story that unfolds in Orphan Black: Echoes season 1 perfectly sets up a major character's return years after the original Orphan Black finale. Not only that, but Echoes, which centers on a now-adult Dr. Kira Manning (Keeley Hawes), pretty much requires a particular Leda clone to make an appearance during the spinoff's sophomore outing. While the spinoff follows amnesiac Lucy (Krysten Ritter) for the majority of its runtime, Orphan Black: Echoes episode 1's ending pays homage to the original series by revealing that Kira, Sarah Manning's (Tatiana Maslany) daughter,...

The Vanessa Hudgens of 'French Girl' Isn't The Vanessa Hudgens You Know
Image
For fans of rom-coms, it can be a struggle to find a new one that puts a fun, unique spin on all the tropes and twists that go hand-in-hand with the genre, while also respecting that said twists should not come at the expense of what makes the genre so beloved. In the case of French Girl, in theaters now, writer-directors James A. Woods and Nicolas Wright take the story to Quebec City, Canada, and follow Sophie (Évelyne Brochu), a French-Canadian chef living in the States, who travels home with her American boyfriend Gordon (Zach Braff) when she gets an opportunity to interview for a prestigious restaurant at the Château Frontenac. Only problem? Head chef and restaurant owner Ruby (Vanessa Hudgens) is also Sophie's ex-girlfriend. And she wants her back.

Zach Braff, Vanessa Hudgens, and Evelyne Brochu in French Girl (2024)
To mark the release of French Girl, released this week by Paramount, we had the pleasure in speaking to its leading trio of stars and those caught up in this endearing rom-com’s love triangle: Zach Braff, Vanessa Hudgens and Evelyne Brochu. Speaking to the three via Zoom, they discuss with us the resurgence of the romantic comedy, and what for them makes this genre tick.

They talk about working in Canada, while we even chat about their cooking skills, and whether they have any phobias. We also couldn’t help but speak about Ryan Gosling’s performance as Ken at the Oscars, because yes we’re still thinking about it. You can watch the interview in its entirety below.

Watch the full interview with Zach Braff, Vanessa Hudgens & Evelyne Brochu here:

Zach Braff, Vanessa Hudgens & Evelyne Brochu Talk French Girl, Bad Boys 4, And Orphan Black
Image
The love triangle in French Girl is unique and set in a beautiful, unique setting of French Canada. The comedic aspect of Ruby's character brought a fun dynamic to the movie, especially in scenes with Gordon. Evelyne Brochu felt connected to her role as a French girl and expressed a desire to be part of the Orphan Black world forever.

French Girl follows Gordon, whose life seems nearly perfect working as an English teacher in Brooklyn with a beloved girlfriend, Sophie. However, things get flipped on their heads when Sophie is offered the opportunity to land her dream job as an executive chef at a new restaurant in her hometown, Quebec City. Zach Braff, Vanessa Hudgens & Évelyne Brochu Talk 'Hilarious' French Girl
Image
Fresh off her Oscars red-carpet hosting gig for the third year in a row, Vanessa Hudgens is back on the big screen with a juicy new femme fatale-type role. French Girl also stars Garden State director-star Zach Braff, and it's a gloriously silly new addition to a certain subgenre of cinema. Do you miss the glory days of rom-coms when you'd be knee-deep in some soapy love triangle-type story, and then something shocking would happen on-screen, and you'd say, "Awkwarrrrd," out loud to no one in particular? If yes, you're in luck (and it's okay to watch romantic comedies by yourself). They seem to be making a comeback as of late — in addition to French Girl, there is No Hard Feelings, Anyone But You and also What Happens Later.

The eponymous character in French Girl is the wonderful French Canadian actress Évelyne Brochu, who TV-goers will remember from the hit series Orphan Black.

French Girl Review: Zach Braff Tries to Reignite the Rom-Com
Image
Who said romantic comedies are dead? Dating back to the 1990s and beyond, of course, the crowd-pleasing genre remains a perfect date-night excuse to remain couchbound and watch lovers quarrel, reunite, kiss, make up, and more. French Girl, a new small-budget feature from co-writer-directors James A. Woods and Nicolas Wright, isn't exactly the most groundbreaking content out there, but it successfully puts a unique little spin on the common love-triangle tropes often seen in modern-day romantic comedies. Zach Braff's age certainly shows here, but his reliably humorous physical comedy might just bring you back to the glory days of Scrubs.

Fun RomCom 'French Girl' Trailer with Zach Braff & Vanessa Hudgens
Image
"Pop the question before she switches teams again!" Paramount Movies has revealed an official trailer for a romantic comedy called French Girl, a Canadian feature about a distinctly Canadian problem - what if you move up to a new city and almost everyone there speaks French, and you don't. Adorable. Or as they say in French, adorablé. Gordon, a hopeless romantic, finds his proposal plans are thrown into chaos when his girlfriend is swept away to Quebec City by a job offer from her ex, a sophisticated celebrity chef. Determined to keep their love alive, Gordon leaves Brooklyn for her hometown, only to find himself hilariously out of his depth in attempting to charm her hard-to-impress, French-speaking family. Zach Braff stars with Evelyne Brochu as his girlfriend Sophie, plus Luc Picard, Antoine Olivier Pilon, Isabelle Vincent, Charlotte Aubin, Muriel Dutil, with William Fichtner and Vanessa Hudgens. This looks mildly amusing...

Zach Braff Returns to Rom-Coms in French Girl Trailer

Zach Braff returns to rom-coms in French Girl, playing a romantic trying to keep his love alive despite a job offer that separates him from his girlfriend. French Girl is a heartwarming romantic comedy that explores the cultural clash between the U.S. and Canada. While there is currently no Scrubs reunion or movie in development, both creator Bill Lawrence and Zach Braff believe it is inevitable and that fans want to see it happen.

Scrubs star Zach Braff makes a return to rom-coms in French Girl, for which we’ve gotten our hands on the first trailer, poster, and a new batch of images. French Girl finds Braff in charmingly familiar territory as a hopeless romantic whose proposal plans are put in jeopardy when his girlfriend gets swept away to Canada by a job offer from her ex. ‘Polytechnique’ Is a Haunting Portrait of a Real-Life Canadian Tragedy [Maple Syrup Massacre]
Image
Maple Syrup Massacre is an editorial series where Joe Lipsett dissects the themes, conventions and contributions of new and classic Canadian horror films. Spoilers follow…

One of the darkest moments in Canadian history happened on Dec 6, 1989: a male shooter walked into the École Polytechnique de Montréal with a semi-automatic rifle. He had written several letters outlining an anti-feminist agenda and he specifically targeted women in his shooting spree, eventually killing fourteen.

For thirty-one years, the “Montreal Massacre” was Canada’s worst shooting.

Denis Villeneuve’s 2009 film Polytechnique, co-written with Jacque Davidts, recounts the events of Dec 6. The film is shot in stark black and white and takes place partially in real time during the shooting, with time jumps and other strategic technical decisions to avoid being sensational or exploitative.

The film opens with a brief burst of violence as two women are shot in a photocopy lab by an offscreen shooter.

Paris Police 1900 - Donald Munro - 17899
La belle époque (2019)
Paris Police 1900 blends police procedural and political thriller in La Belle Epoque. But this is no beautiful city. Paris is on the cusp of a new millennium. This event, along with the Dreyfus Affair, helps plunge French politics into turmoil and threatens the continuation of the Third Republic. Despite all her evident idiosyncrasies, there’s something familiar about Sophia (Anne Élisabeth Bossé), the focus of Quebecois debutante Monia Chokri’s comedy “A Brother’s Love,” which gets the Un Certain Regard sidebar of Cannes off to a springy if overlong and somewhat stumbling start. Sophia may have a PhD in political philosophy but she lives a remarkably unexamined life. And in that she is enabled by a co-dependent relationship with her attractive psychologist brother Karim (Patrick Hivon) which traps them both in an eternally arrested state of emotional adolescence. The familiarity springs from a realisation that the male version of Sophia’s character is such a common staple of the modern comedy as to be nearly a cliché: the lovable manchild whose emotional immaturity is actually part of his charm.

However these traits distilled into a woman by Chokri’s promising if overindulgent screenplay and Bossé’s admirably uncompromised performance,...

New ‘Orphan Black’ Series In Works At AMC
Tatiana Maslany in Orphan Black (2013)
Good news for fans of Orphan Black. A new Orphan Black series is in early development at AMC, Deadline has learned.

Temple St. Productions, which produced the original series, is on board to produce the series, which we hear is not a reboot or spinoff, but will be a new story set in the Orphan Black universe.

Orphan Black, which helped put BBC America on the original scripted series map as its first homegrown hit, aired for five seasons. It starred Emmy winner Tatiana Maslany as multiple clones in the Peabody Award-winning series that all started on a train platform. A troubled woman, Beth Childs (Maslany), locked eyes with an unknown identical woman, Sarah Manning (Maslany), before jumping to her death. From that day on, they were inextricably linked to a clone conspiracy that came to rule Sarah’s life. The cast also included Ari Millen, Jordan Gavaris, Maria Doyle Kennedy,...

Series Mania Q&A: French Director Nicolas Saada Discusses ‘Thanksgiving’
Nicolas Saada
While at Series Mania Festival to present his mini-series “Thanksgiving” in competition, Nicolas Saada sat with Variety to discuss the spy drama which centers on the marriage between a Frenchman and American woman who are keeping secrets from each other.

Written by Saada and Anne-Louise Trividic, “Thanksgiving” was produced by Claude Chelli at Capa Drama, the thriving French banner behind “Versailles” and “Braquo,” for Franco-German network Arte. Newen Distribution is handling international sales on the series.

A former high-profile film critic, Saada previously wrote Frederic Jardin’s “Nuit Blanche,” which was remade into “Sleepless” with Jamie Foxx; and directed two films, “Spy(ies),” a London-set thriller with Guillaume Canet, and most recently “Taj Mahal,” a psychological thriller with Stacy Martin (“Nymphomaniac”) set against the backdrop of the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attack.

What’s the genesis of “Thanksgiving”?

It was Claude Chelli [the boss of Capa Drama] who approached me. He wanted to work with me and...

Orphan Black: Season Five Ratings
We don't have to worry whether Orphan Black will be cancelled or renewed for a sixth season. When BBC America and Canada's Space channel renewed the drama for a fifth season, last year, they made it clear it was for a final installment. Showrunner Graeme Manson said that it was a creative decision. Even though it is ending, we're still tracking the ratings, for a few reasons. It can help predict the likelihood of a spin-off or sequel. It helps us measure the success of other BBC America shows. And, it's also fun. A sci-fi thriller series, Orphan Black stars Tatiana Maslany as Sarah Manning and the Leda clones. First Trailer for Indie Sci-Fi Film 'Rememory' Starring Peter Dinklage
"The machine is incredible!" "Pure, unfiltered truth." Ready to remember all of your memories? Lionsgate has debuted the official trailer for an indie sci-fi film titled Rememory, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. This is one of a few subtle indie sci-fi films that played at the festival, along with Marjorie Prime and The Discovery. The gimmick in this is a device that can extract, record and play a person's memories. The inventor is found dead, and his wife retreats into her home until a mysterious man shows up and begins investigating what exactly happened. Peter Dinklage stars, with Julia Ormond, Martin Donovan, Evelyne Brochu, Henry Ian Cusick, and the late Anton Yelchin. The film received pretty bad reviews out of Sundance, and while I am somewhat intrigued, this trailer doesn't really grab me. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Mark Palansky's Rememory, direct...

Rememory Trailer Has Peter Dinklage Hunting Down a Killer
Peter Dinklage
We are nothing more than the memories we keep. Lionsgate Premiere has unveiled the first trailer and poster for the upcoming thriller Rememory, starring Peter Dinklage, Julia Ormond, Henry Ian Cusick and the late Anton Yelchin in one of his final films. Peter Dinklage plays a mystery man who tries to unlock the truth about a new device that allows people to replay their own memories. Rememory was directed by Mark Palansky from a script he co-wrote with Michael Vukadinovich, with Daniel Bekerman and Lee Clay producing.

The film explores the unexplained death of Gordon Dunn (Martin Donovan), a visionary scientific pioneer whose body is found shortly after the unveiling of his newest work: a device able to extract, record and play a person's memories. Gordon's wife, Carolyn (Julia Ormond, Mad Men, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Legends of the Fall), retreats into her house and cuts off...

Rememory trailer: Peter Dinklage stars in new tech thriller
Joseph Baxter Aug 15, 2017

Game Of Thrones star Peter Dinklage tackles a technological murder mystery in the Rememory trailer.

Peter Dinklage’s starring role in the thriller Rememory is now being showcased in a trailer for its upcoming wide release, after having debuted at the Sundance Film Festival back in January.

Video of Rememory (2017 Movie) - Official Trailer - Peter Dinklage, Anton Yelchin

The Rememory trailer features Peter Dinklage as Sam Bloom, a man who comes into the investigative service of widow Carolyn, played by Julia Ormond (Mad Men, The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button) to look into the murder of her husband Gordon Dunn, played Martin Donovan (Legends Of Tomorrow, Ant-Man), who was the inventor of the plot-centric device that can extract, record and play memories.

Bloom’s investigation starts when he takes possession of the device in question, which, to use an appropriately Game of Thrones-themed metaphor, turns...

‘Rememory’ Trailer: Peter Dinklage Unlocks The Truth With Anton Yelchin & More
Memory is elusive, and the same event can be perceived entirely differently depending of the perspective of those experiencing it. So, it’s no surprise that when it’s discovered how to record and play back memories in “Rememory,” trouble isn’t far behind.

Peter Dinklage, Julia Ormond, Martin Donovan, Anton Yelchin, Henry Ian Cusick, and Evelyne Brochu all star in the film from director Mark Palansky (“Penelope,” “A Series Of Unfortunate Events“).

‘Orphan Black’ Review: Series Finale ‘Rights the Wrongs’ of an Uneven But Ultimately Satisfying Season
Tatiana Maslany in Orphan Black (2013)
[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “To Right the Wrongs of Many,” the series finale of “Orphan Black.”]

BBC America has dubbed “Orphan Black’s” last season “The Final Trip,” and it has been an uneven ride of highs and lows that nevertheless ended satisfactorily.

The season began with the promise that Sarah (Tatiana Maslany) and her sestras would take a stand once and for all to take down the shadowy man who was behind behind their cloning and who still wanted to control their biology. It was exciting to think of the Ledas coming together in force to finally stick it to the man.

Unfortunately putting a face to the name P.T. Westmoreland (Stephen McHattie) proved to be too much of a bizarre distraction. While his Victorian affectations were entertaining, his entire storyline this year — from the “Island of Dr. Moreau” vibes to that twisted Victorian dress-up dinner party — felt far too cartoonish to be worthy of the series’ big bad. After a while, all of...

Orphan Black Team Previews the Final Season's Clone Scenes, Flashbacks
Tatiana Maslany in Orphan Black (2013)
There will be no shortage of clone meet-ups during Orphan Black‘s fifth and final season, premiering this Saturday at 10/9c on BBC America.

“A big priority in approaching the [series] finale was just to [shoot] as many clone scenes as possible,” executive producer John Fawcett tells TVLine.

But will the sestras’ shared screentime include any new doppelgänger additions? “We really wanted to focus on [the clones] we had, but I wouldn’t close the window on that,” Ep Graeme Manson hedges. However, in putting the spotlight on Sarah, Alison, Cosima, Helena & Co.

Lineup Announced for Split Screens TV Fest in New York – Maggie Gyllenhaal’s ‘The Deuce’ to premiere & much more
Author: James Kleinmann

The lineup for the first Split Screens TV festival in New York which runs at the IFC Center from 2nd – 8th June 2017 has just been announced.

With high-profile filmmakers and actors working in television now the norm and the current wealth of celebrated series, showcasing episodes along with their casts and creators has become an increasingly important aspect of major film festivals. Despite the likes of Tribeca 2017 creating an entire programme strand for television, the natural focus of festival press coverage tends to remains on film, so it’s great to see more festivals emerge like Spilt Screens which are devoted purely to television.

Curated by critic Matt Zoller Seitz, the weeklong Spilt Screens festival comprises special events, panels and screenings and launches with the world premiere of HBO’s ’70s set drama ‘The Deuce’, with producer and co-star Maggie Gyllenhaal in attendance.

Other guests taking to...
