Bryson Tiller is switching it up and is ready to give fans “the unexpected.” On Thursday, the R&b star started a new musical era — two years after his Anniversary album — with the release of “Outside,” a vibey track sampling Ying Yang Twins’ “Wait (The Whisper Song).”

Chinese streaming giant iQiyi has announced a slate of 33 Chinese original productions, including Pledge Of Allegiance, a sequel to hit martial arts film Brotherhood Of Blades, and an adaptation of hot Chinese sci-fi writer Liu Cixin’s Ball Lightning.

The streamer, which has been making a big push into Southeast Asian markets, has also struck a deal with Malaysian broadcaster Suke TV for exclusive rights to ten Malay variety shows to stream on its iQiyi International platform for audiences in Singapore and Malaysia.

The new Chinese content slate is divided across five genres – Epic Tales, Young Power, Mystery Adventures, Oriental Fantasy and Differentiated Romance.

A Chinese court formally approved the arrest of pop icon Kris Wu on rape charges on Monday — and Chinese streamers have swiftly responded by deleting the shows in which he appears.

The move comes after Wu was first detained on July 31 on suspicions of rape. The allegations against him first emerged last month after Du Meizhu, 18, accused him on social media of date-raping her while she was drunk, and doing the same to other young women. He denied the charges at the time.

The Chaoyang District People’s Procuratorate in Beijing issued an official statement that it had approved the arrest “after investigation in accordance with the law.”

The case is already being hailed by some commentators in China as a “major event in the history of the Chinese film industry.”

Hong Kong’s “Shock Wave 2” out-earned “Wonder Woman 1984” in China in just two days, topping the local box office this weekend with a $51.4 million debut, according to data from Maoyan.

By the end of Christmas Day, “Shock Wave 2” had grossed $28.6 million (RMB187 million), more than the $23 million (RMB151 million) “Wonder Woman” had earned since Dec. 18.

Its opening is nearly triple the Patty Jenkins-directed blockbuster’s China debut of $18.8 million last weekend, and more than 35 times the mere $1.46 million “Wonder Woman” managed to lasso this weekend to come in seventh at the box office.

Meanwhile in North America, “Wonder Woman” opened to $16.7 million from 2,100 cinemas, marking the best opening weekend to date for the region since the Covid-19 pandemic began. Shortly afterwards, the studio announced that it is now fast-tracking development on a third, concluding installment of the franchise that will bring back both director Patty Jenkins and leading lady Gal Gadot.

Chinese production firm Aim Media has licensed the North American rights of director Yang Lina’s “Spring Tide” to distributor China Lion. Smart Cinema, the digital venture by former Wanda executive Jack Gao, has also bought the rights to screen the film on its platform in South Korea.

Yang is an independent documentary maker turned feature film director who is making a trilogy of films about women. “Spring Tide” is the second in that series. It tells a story of family dysfunction in which a woman must deal with the competing demands of her daughter and mother as they all live together in a small apartment. Featuring an all-female cast and starring Hao Lei, it debuted in competition at the Shanghai International Film Festival last year.

Aim Media had intended for the film to screen theatrically sometime between March and May, but when the coronavirus shuttered cinemas, it moved the title straight to streaming.

China’s Cmc Pictures will bring a line-up of five titles to the Cannes virtual market this year, including “Assassin in Red,” a major blockbuster set to hit next Chinese New Year.

The firm will be selling global rights outside of China and Southeast Asia to the fantasy drama directed by Lu Yang and executive produced by Ning Hao (“Crazy Alien”).

The film, whose Mandarin title translates to “Assassinate the Novelist,” tells the story of a man who, in order to save his missing daughter, is tasked with killing a writer whose writing creates a parallel world that begins to interact with the real one.

The title reunites “Brotherhood of Blades II” stars Yang Mi (“Tiny Times”) and Lei Jiayin (“The Longest Day in Chang’an”), alongside Golden Horse Award winner Dong Zijiang (of Jia Zhangke’s “Mountains May Depart” and “Ash is Purest White”).

Streaming platform Rakuten Viki has acquired seven titles from Chinese firm Croton Media. They are set to premiere worldwide on the platform this month, some of them as Viki Originals.

The titles include 58-episode show “Eternal Love,” a period drama starring Yang Mi and Mark Chao; 30-episode “Love O2O,” a modern drama starring Yang Yang and Zheng Shuang; 54-episode “Princess Weiyoung,” a period drama starring Tiffany Tang and Luo Jin, an onscreen couple who got married in real life last year; and 62-episode “General and I,” a period drama starring Angelababy and Wallace Chung.

The 54th Annual Golden Horse Awards were held today in Taipei. That's the Taiwanese Oscars if you will. Though a female-led comedy called The Bold, the Corrupt, and the Beautiful took the top prizes, the film with the most wins was The Great Buddha+ which took home five. A romantic comedy called See You Tomorrow (the all-star cast includes Tfe favorites Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Takeshi Kaneshiro, and Angelababy) took home most of the 'eye candy' prizes. The family tragedy Old Beast, about a father in court and at war with his kids, also did well.

Curiously Taiwan's Oscar submission Small Talk was eligible last year at this ceremony but wasn't a major player. You can see the whole 2017 ceremony online here but it's not subtitled so good luck! Halfway through both the summer movie season and the year of 2016 as a whole, sequels have been hit or miss. It's been quite the week for Independence Day fans, with the debut of two new previews along with four posters for the long-awaited sequel Resurgence. With the Memorial Day weekend upon us, 20th Century Fox has released the first clip from this follow-up, reuniting two stars from the original movie, Brent Spiner as Dr. Okun and Bill Pullman as President Whitmore. As you can see in this clip, Dr. Okun emerges from an apparent slumber to shed some new light on alien activity.

This scene, which debuted at the 20th Century Fox YouTube page, also gives us a glimpse at William Fichtner's General Adams, who is seen entering a room filled with monitors showcasing the activity of the aliens they currently have in captivity. Earlier this week, we showed you an extended preview with a slew of new footage from Independence Day: Resurgence, along with posters that showed four of the world's iconic landmarks being destroyed by these alien invaders. With just under one month left until this sequel finally hits theaters, we have a new preview where cast members Jeff Goldblum and Liam Hemsworth shed some new light on the story. The plot is set 20 years after the first movie, where the world finds itself unprepared yet again for an alien attack.

This summer marks the 20th Anniversary of the sci-fi action classic Independence Day, which helped take Will Smith's movie career to the next level. 20th Century Fox is celebrating this milestone by releasing the long-awaited sequel Independence Day: Resurgence, arriving in theaters June 24. Unfortunately, Will Smith doesn't reprise his role as Captain Stephen Hiller, but one original cast member coming back is Jeff Goldblum as David Levinson. A new viral video has surfaced that helps fill in the two-decade gap between the two movies, and it seems Levinson has been keeping quite busy.

The video surfaced from the new viral website WarOf1996.com, which offers a comprehensive timeline for the events that followed the war with the aliens, which has been dubbed the War of 1996.
