Peaky Blinders movie celebrates wrap with peek at Cillian Murphy and Barry Keoghan
Image
No one is as well fed as fans of Steven Knight. We've got a release date for A Thousand Blows, House Of Guinness on the horizon, and the Peaky Blinders movie just wrapped filming. The film would have probably been Knight's most anticipated project anyway, but Cillian Murphy's...

Peaky Blinders Movie: Confirmation, Cast, Story & Everything We Know
Image
With the acclaimed series wrapped, attention turns to the Peaky Blinders movie to bring audiences back to the world of Tommy Shelby and the Peaky Blinders boys. Ever since the sixth and final season of Peaky Blinders, fans have been clamoring for the long-teased Peaky Blinders movie, which would presumably wrap up the story. While details are still rather scant, what is known about the Peaky Blinders movie is enough to promise an exciting conclusion.

The show certainly finished feeling like it had more to tell, and capping off Peaky Blinders with a movie rather than 7th season is an intriguing yet understandable way forward. Peaky Blinders season 6 ended with Tommy left with a choice between seeking revenge against his enemies or continuing with a life in which the world thinks he is dead. While the ambiguity of the conclusion works well, it seems as though the movie would give...

‘The Substance,’ ‘The Deliverance’ and ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ Lead Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Nominations
Image
Coralie’s Fargeat’s “The Substance,” “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” and “The Deliverance” led the 12th annual Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Award nominations.

The body horror of Fargeat’s “The Substance” resonated with the make-up and hair stylist guild with three nominations. Special effects artist Pierre Olivier Persin explained that Fargeat wanted to use practical effects, instead of digital CGI, where possible. 70-80% of what was seen in the film was practical, including the MonstroElisaSue creation which features at the end.

“Gladiator 2” and “Deadpool and Wolverine” each landed two nominations a piece. Other films that scored include “Shirley,” “Bob Marley: One Love” and “The Last Showgirl.”

Missing from the nominations were nods for “Maria,” “Nosferatu” and “Dune: Part II.”

In the television category, “Dancing With the Stars” landed five nominations across the hair and make-up categories.

Lady Gaga’s “Chromatica Ball Film” was also nominated, landing her personal makeup artist,...

This 1980 Movie Starring John Hurt Was So Good, It Forced The Oscars To Add A Brand-New Category
Image
The Oscars has added many different award categories across its history, with one being added after the success of a 1980s drama, The Elephant Man. The Academy Awards are easily the most prestigious awards in the movie industry, with the first ceremony taking place in 1929. Across the history of the Academy Awards, there have been many award categories that have been added and retired across the years; most recently the award for Best Sound Editing, which was retired in 2019.

In 2024, the Oscars announced the creation of a new awards category that will recognize a movie's casting decision. The first Academy Award for Best Achievement In Casting will be awarded at the 98th ceremony in 2025; this is the first new award category since the creation of the Best Feature Film category in 2001. Further new categories may be created in the future as seen in the movie industry's campaign for a Best Stunt Award.

This Upcoming Sci-Fi Movie Is The Next Best Chance To Fix The 2024 Oscars' Biggest Snub
Image
Lily Gladstone losing Best Actress to Emma Stone was the biggest snub at the 2024 Oscars. Gladstone could win an Oscar for their performance in the upcoming sci-fi film The Memory Police, directed by Reed Morano and written by Charlie Kaufman, which would vindicate her Oscar snub. Gladstone's Best Actress Oscar loss comes down to the difference in tone and style between her and Stone's performances.

Lily Gladstone's upcoming sci-fi movie has a good chance of making up for her major snub at the 2024 Oscars. After an incredible year for film in 2023, the 2024 Oscars were truly a night to remember. Although the 2024 Oscar nominations included some big snubs, the awards themselves went to some pretty deserving winners.

Oppenheimer took home the most golden statues — including director Christopher Nolan’s very first Academy Award — at the 2024 Oscars, which was hosted once again by Jimmy Kimmel.

Christopher Nolan’s J. Robert Oppenheimer biopic led the pack with 13 nominations and ultimately won best picture, best director, best actor (Cillian Murphy), best supporting actor (Robert Downey Jr.), best cinematography (Hoyte van Hoytema) and best original score (Ludwig Göransson). It was followed by Poor Things, which won four awards (including best actress for Emma Stone) and was nominated for 11. Killers of the Flower Moon earned 10 noms but left the show empty-handed, while Barbie was nominated for eight Oscars and won best original song for “I’m Just Ken.”

The 96th Oscars were held on Sunday, March 10 at Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood. Those who missed the live telecast can stream the ceremony on demand on Hulu.

Greta Gerwig tells me there’s “no resistance” from her about the possibility of Barbie 2.

The challenge for her she says, is how to tackle a follow-up movie. Initially, the filmmaker wasn’t “feeling” the idea of a sequel, but now she’s warm to such a situation. “I’m not dismissing it, I want to do it,” she says, but there’s a heck of a lot to discuss first with Mattel, Margot Robbie, Warner Bros Discovery, producer David Heyman and all of her creative collaborators.

UK and Irish talent enjoys strong night at the Oscars

It was a good night out for UK and Ireland talent at the 2024 Academy Awards.

UK-born Nolan’s Oppenheimer sweep is a victory of sorts for the UK, although the film is a US production, produced by the UK’s Emma Thomas. The film enabled a key triumph for Ireland, with its lead Cillian Murphy being the first Irish-born actor to win a best actor prize at the awards, with Murphy beaming in his acceptance speech: “I’m a very, very proud Irish man standing here tonight.”

Brits Dominate Oscars in Non-Acting Categories With Wins for Christopher Nolan, ‘The Zone of Interest’ and ‘Poor Things’
Image
Should any Americans be concerned following the Academy Awards ceremony, no, they haven’t missed Mother’s Day.

Mother’s Day in the U.S. is still May 12, a good two months away. In the U.K., however, it was the night of the Oscars, March 10 — and given the number of Brits that took to the stage to give acceptance speeches and thank their mothers, it’s understandable if many viewers stateside got confused (and a little panicked).

Regardless, for a period of time on Sunday night, it looked like the Oscars were going to be a solely U.K. affair.

Back-to-back craft wins for “Poor Things” saw a steady procession of Brits take to the stage at the Dolby Theater, including Holly Waddington (best costume design), Nadia Stacey, Mark Couler and Josh Weston (best makeup and hairstyling) and James Price and Shona Heath.

Then there was one of the night’s biggest below-the-line shocks,...

‘Oppenheimer’, ‘The Zone Of Interest’ & ‘Poor Things’ Wins Cap Good Night For Brits At The Oscars
Image
It was a good night for the UK at the 96th Oscars. Brits won in seven separate categories at the Dolby Theatre, with Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Glazer’s wins the highest profile.

Nolan scooped Best Director and Best Picture, the latter alongside his wife, Emma Thomas, for the night’s standout winner, Oppenheimer. Universal’s film about J. Robert Oppenheimer and his Manhattan Project took home seven statuettes, having been widely tipped for glory after a stellar awards season and handed Nolan his first Best Director win.

After thanking his wife and production partner, Emma Thomas, and others such as brother and Westworld creator Jonathan Nolan, Nolan added a sprinkle of hope to the sauce in a message to the Academy.

“Movies are just a little bit over 100 years old — I mean imagine being there 100 years into painting or theatre. We don’t know where this incredible journey is going from here,...

Oscars 2024: Oppenheimer & Poor Things ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

We are finally done with the Oscars 2024! Christopher Nolan won his first Academy Award for Oppenheimer, and Emma Things won her second Best Actress Award for Poor Things. If you think, just like the theatres, the competition for awards happened between Barbie and Oppenheimer, you are wrong. The Christopher Nolan directorial competed fiercely with Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things. So, who emerged victorious in the race for the most awards at the Academy this year?

Poor Things or Oppenheimer – Who Broke The Academy Awards in 2024? Poor Things

“If you think Maestro had some good fake noses”: Jimmy Kimmel Throws Shade at Bradley Cooper’s Oscar Snub for Best Makeup to Poor Things

The team behind Emma Stone and Willem Dafoe’s makeup and hair in Poor Things won Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the 2024 Oscars.

Nadia Stacey, Mark Coulier, and Josh Weston won the award on Sunday night instead of the team who did Bradley Cooper’s makeup for Maestro.

The 49-year-old’s film was expected to win, but perhaps the online controversy surrounding his use of a fake nose to portray Leonard Bernstein prevented it.

Jimmy Kimmel took aim at the A-list crowd at the 96th Academy Awards, so he took this opportunity to throw some shade at Cooper’s Oscar snub, too.

Bradley Cooper‘s film Maestro lost the Best Makeup award to Poor Things at the 2024 Oscars, surprising many after the controversy over the Hollywood star wearing a prosthetic nose to play Leonard Bernstein.

The Oscars have arrived! The 96th Academy Awards honoring the best film achievements of 2023 were the culmination of an eventful year that brought a wide range of cinematic experiences, from the blockbuster “Barbenheimer” phenomenon to the chilling art house drama “The Zone of Interest.” So what did it all mean when the envelopes opened and the trophies were handed out on March 10? Scroll down for our live blog where I break down who won, who lost, who upset, and how it all fit into the story of this awards season.

Indeed, “Barbenheimer” defined the awards season just as much as it dominated the box office, accounting for a combined 21 Oscar nominations this year including Best Picture bids for both. But if “Barbie” won the box office battle between the two juggernauts with its almost $1.5 billion in global ticket sales, “Oppenheimer” has been the awards champion, sweeping best film honors from the Golden Globes,...

2024 Oscar Nominations: ‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘Poor Things’ Lead This Year’s Picks
Image
My, how much the race has evolved since the 96th Oscars nominations were announced January 23. We won’t say changed, since it seems like the certain sure bets at that time have become even surer bets. You all know “Oppenheimer,” long considered a frontrunner in many categories,” received the most nominations then with 13, followed by “Poor Things” with 11 and “Killers of the Flower Moon” with 10. Well, tonight, this evening of Sunday March 10 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles at 7:00pm Et, we’re finally gonna see if what we all assume to be true is actually going to pan out: That “Oppenheimer” is teed up for a very big night, as IndieWire’s own Anne Thompson has predicted, with her final Oscar picks, herself.

“Oppenheimer” has won top honors at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, BAFTAs, and Screen Actors Guild Awards. Surely Oscars domination is next, right?...

Oscar Parties 2024: Inside Hollywood’s Red Carpet Parties and A-List Events
Image
Oscar week is finally here! Ask anyone who has been in the thick of awards season and they’ll likely let out a huge sigh followed by exasperated admission that this has been one of the most hectic runs in recent memory. The condensed calendar, forced by last year’s dual strikes, could translate to more lively bashes, however, as there’s light at the end of the tunnel with Sunday’s Oscars. That can only mean that champagne is currently popping at A-list bashes across Los Angeles, and The Hollywood Reporter is on the scene everywhere from Vanity Fair and Elton John to MPTF’s Night Before. See below for the roundup of all the red carpet action.

Vanity Fair

Editor in chief Radhika Jones hosted a milestone 30th anniversary party at a custom designed structure that connects the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts with Beverly Hills City Hall.

‘Maestro’ hoping to follow in the Oscar wake of ‘The Whale’
Image
Last year, Brendan Fraser won Best Actor for “The Whale,” which also won Best Makeup and Hairstyling for artists Adrien Morot, Judy Chin, and Annemarie Bradley. This is a combination of Oscar categories that have popped up several times over the years. But could it happen again this year? Well, theoretically, yes.

The brilliant makeup artist Kazu Hiro, also known as Kazuhiro Tsuji, turned Bradley Cooper into Leonard Bernstein in Netflix’s “Maestro.” Kazu Hiro landed himself an Oscar nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling alongside Kay Georgiou and Lori McCoy-Bell. Meanwhile, Cooper is nominated for Best Actor.

Along with “The Whale,” several other movies have done well with this pair of Oscar categories. In 2018, “Darkest Hour” won Best Actor for Gary Oldman and Hiro won Best Makeup and Hairstyling alongside David Malinowski and Lucy Sibbick. In 2014, “Dallas Buyers Club” won both awards, too, with Matthew McConaughey winning for acting...

2024 Oscars Best Makeup and Hairstyling nominees: 4 past champs, 2 veterans and 7 rookies
Image
The films up for the 2024 Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar are “Golda,” “Maestro,” “Oppenheimer,” “Poor Things,” and “Society of the Snow.” Our current odds show that “Maestro” (10/3) is favored to win, followed in order by “Poor Things” (71/20), “Oppenheimer” (9/2), “Society of the Snow” (9/2), and “Golda” (9/2).

This lineup is the category’s second in a row to include a 54% first-timer majority, thus constituting a new trend after 70% remained the norm for the preceding half decade. The present rookie subset consists of “Golda” trio Suzi Battersby, Karen Hartley Thomas, and Ashra Kelly-Blue as well as one artist from each other film: Luisa Abel (“Oppenheimer”), Ana López-Puigcerver (“Society of the Snow”), Lori McCoy-Bell (“Maestro”), and Josh Weston (“Poor Things”).

McCoy-Bell and Weston share their respective nominations with Kazu Hiro and Mark Coulier, each of whom succeeded on two of his previous four outings. While Coulier won for “The Iron Lady” (2012) and “The Grand Budapest Hotel...

Image
A few days before the 96th Academy Awards ceremony, Yorgos Lanthimos’s Best Picture nominee, Poor Things, makes its streaming debut on Hulu on March 7. Akin to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein tale, Poor Things tells an unbelievable story about the fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter, a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter. Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.

Poor Things could dominate the Oscars this year with 11 nominations in various categories. You can check out the complete list of potential awards for this bizarrely charming film below:

BAFTAs: ‘Poor Things’ winners on Yorgos Lanthimos emails and Willem Dafoe makeup
Image
“Oppenheimer” won big at the BAFTA Awards, taking home seven gongs including Best Picture and Best Director for Christopher Nolan. But Searchlight Pictures’ “Poor Things” was close behind with a total tally of five victories.

The Yorgos Lanthimos movie won Best Actress for Emma Stone, Best Production Design for Zsuzsa Mihalek (who wasn’t present), Shona Heath, and James Price, Best Costume Design for Holly Waddington, Best Makeup and Hair for Nadia Stacey, Mark Coulier, and Josh Weston, and Best Visual Effects for Simon Hughes.

The first of the below winners to speak to the press was Hughes, who discussed his role in creating the world of “Poor Things.” “That’s where you have to acknowledge Shona Heath and James Price, the two production designers on the film because it’s their vision. And they were very clear with us. And even starting off, we were given a 200 page document...

‘Maestro’ wins at Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards on the way to Oscars
Image
“Maestro” did well at the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild on Feb. 18 winning two of its three bids. It claimed the prizes for both period/character makeup and special effects races but lost period/character hairstyling to “Barbie,” which was snubbed by the Oscars. Likewise for “Saltburn,” which won both contemporary makeup and hairstyling.

Of this year’s other Oscar nominees, “Poor Things” lost all three of its bids just hours after pulling off an upset at the BAFTAs, “Golda” and “Oppenheimer” were each defeated in a single race while “Society of the Snow” was snubbed by the guild.

These wins boost the odds for “Maestro” to prevail at the Academy Awards. In the decade-long history of these guild honors, there has been just one year when an Muahs winner did not go on to claim the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

That was two years ago: “Coming 2 America...

Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild 2024 Winners Include ‘Maestro,’ ‘Saltburn,’ and ‘Barbie’
Image
The Oscar-frontrunning “Maestro” was the big winner at the 11th annual Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards (held February 18 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel). Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein opus took period/character makeup and special makeup effects. This puts “Maestro” in the Oscar driver’s seat (led by two-time winner Kazu Hiro) against “Poor Things,” “Oppenheimer,” “Golda,” and “Society of the Snow.”

Two non-Oscar competitors, “Saltburn”and “Barbie,” split the other wins: Emerald Fennell’s psychological thriller grabbed both contemporary makeup and hairstyling, while Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar blockbuster snagged period/character hairstyling.

TV winners, meanwhile, were divided among “The Idol” (contemporary makeup), “The Crown” (period/character makeup), “The Last of Us” (special makeup effects), “The Morning Show” (contemporary hairstyling), and “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” (period/character hairstyling).

As previously announced, Annette Bening (Best Actress nominee for “Nyad”) received the Distinguished Artisan Award, and Oscar- and Emmy-winning make-up...

Oscars: Will ‘Oppenheimer’ or ‘Poor Things’ win all three design awards?
Image
Some categories go together naturally, like Best Picture and Best Director. It’s no different in the below-the-line categories, either, with Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling having an interesting relationship with one another.

The three design awards are often paired or grouped together as a trio and awarded to the same film. Most recently, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” won both Best Costume Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Let’s take a closer look at this trifecta of categories and examine the last 20 ceremonies to break down how often these awards overlap.

As you can see, in the past two decades, there have been 11 instances where a film has won at least two of these three design categories.

Eight films have won both Costume Design and Production Design: “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” in 2004, “The Aviator” in 2005, “Memoirs of a Geisha...

‘Poor Things’ composer Jerskin Fendrix on creating unique film score: ‘A flirty coyness to the whole process’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
“I like the fact that we were both new to it,” says Oscar-nominated composer Jerskin Fendrix while discussing his relationship with “Poor Things” director Yorgos Lanthimos. It was the musician’s first time scoring a movie and the filmmaker’s first time commissioning original music. “There was kind of a flirty coyness to the whole process. Both of us didn’t really know what we were doing and it was very sweet.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Lanthimos reached out to Fendrix after listening to one of the songwriter’s pop albums. “We had a common ground on how humor is used in art,” he explains. “There’s a good deal of overlap in how we feel is the best way of communicating the human ideas.”
