Tim Robinson & Paul Rudd's A24 Comedy Friendship' Gets High Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Friendship, an upcoming A24 comedy starring Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd, is now regarded as one of the best films of the year thus far. The film is getting a limited theatrical release, but it sounds like audiences should do whatever is necessary to catch Andrew DeYoung's feature-length directorial debut that has the I Think You Should Leave star taking his unique comedic sensibilities to the big screen.

As of this writing, Friendship has a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 61 reviews. If it stays around that number, it will be a Top 15-rated film on the review aggregate website for 2025. The critic consensus reads, "Tim Robinson expands his exquisitely painful cringe comedy style to feature length with seamless results in Friendship, a toxic bromance that'll make audiences laugh and wince in equal measure." It seems that Robinson is able to translate his awkward comedy for theater audiences, the...

‘Friendship’ Review: It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World with Tim Robinson
Image
“There’s no rules for male friendship!” exclaims Paul Rudd’s Peter Klaven in John Hamburg’s 2009 film I Love You, Man as he agonizes over the intricacies of platonic etiquette. Over a decade and a half later, the actor returns to find humor and insight across the same thematic terrain in writer-director Andrew DeYoung’s Friendship. This time, however, his character is the object of anxious affection rather than its originator.

Society, too, has shifted since 2009. Today, the epidemic of male loneliness is taken seriously as an “issue” to debate rather than merely a topic of discussion, though it’s also prone to being skewered by meme culture. Friendship lands somewhere in the middle of that spectrum, offering little in the way of answers or cures yet providing plenty of gut-busting laughs. While not necessarily a response to the times, it’s undeniably a product of them.

DeYoung pitches...

Friendship Review | Tim Robinson Wants to Be Paul Rudd's Friend
Image
We often talk about how hard it is to forge new friendships as we get older. Our routines lock us into specific spaces where meeting new people and trying new things is hard. With that being said, have you ever met someone who's a little too eager to be friends, or maybe even uncomfortably overzealous? You hit it off, hang out, and as you get to know them, alarm bells go off. Andrew DeYoungs new film Friendship takes this premise, turns it up to the highest degree, and utilizes cringe connoisseur Tim Robinson to take it as far as possible.

The film banks on several hilarious scenarios that play much like a full-length sketch from Robinson's acclaimed Netflix show, I Think You Should Leave, but there are also some intelligent epiphanies sprinkled throughout Friendship. In between, DeYoung lets his main character run amok and burn everything down.

The Shallow Tale Of A Writer Who Decided To Write About A Serial Killer Review: Dark Comedy Sets Its Sights On The Wrong Target
Image
Britt Lower, John Magaro, and Steve Buscemi are standout performers in The Shallow Tale. Suzie, played by Britt Lower, brings the most humor and excitement to the film. The movie's focus on the crumbling marriage between Suzie and Keane overshadows Keane's writing journey.

Some may find the title of The Shallow Tale of a Writer Who Decided to Write About a Serial Killer misleading. It's not entirely inaccurate, but beneath the film's initial premise as described in the title is a different movie, one less about the process of writing and more about a marriage falling apart and how it might be saved over one out of control night.

Patrick Wilson Thinks Zack Snyder's Watchmen Paved the Way for Avengers
Image
Almost 15 years have passed since Zack Snyder took his first steps into the world of superheroes with Watchmen, the adaptation of Alan Moore's popular story brought to the pages of comics alongside Dave Gibbons and John Higgins. However, it is still considered one of the best adaptations of the genre in all of history.

Following a style similar to the one seen on The Boys today, Watchmen shows a world where superheroes occupy a very different place than what movies and series usually show. Watchmen is set in a world where superheroes are illegal. However, one of them, Rorschach, is still actively acting in the shadows.

One day, a former superhero is murdered and Rorschach begins to investigate what happened, gathering his former colleagues to warn them of a possible conspiracy against them in the middle of a world crisis because of the Cold War.

Patrick Wilson On Why Zack Snyder’s ‘Watchmen’ Was “Ahead Of The Curve” & How It Paved The Way For ‘The Avengers’ Films
Image
Patrick Wilson is looking back at Watchmen and praising director Zack Snyder for being “ahead of the curve,” which he says ultimately led the way for films like The Avengers.

“Watchmen is the only movie of mine that I have watched front to back since a premiere — that movie is awesome,” Wilson said in an interview with ReelBlend.

Wilson joked that he wanted to share the film with his son “to fast forward through the scene with Malin Akerman in the ship.”

“I just wanted to look at it as an older guy, as a filmmaker. I knew Zack was ahead of the curve,” he added. “It’s weird to say that audiences weren’t ready for it. But you need a movie like that. You need movies to go so dark that then Avengers can go so light. I do believe in that.”

Wilson says that he would “love...

‘Reopening Night’ Documentary Chronicles Shakespeare in the Park During Covid: ‘We Opened in Chaos’
Image
Like mariners shipwrecked in “The Tempest,” tormented by a conspiring God, or Macbeth at Dunsinane, the cast and crew of Shakespeare in the Park’s “Merry Wives” faced promethean odds. As told in the new HBO Max documentary “Reopening Night,” the Public Theater’s endeavor to open “Merry Wives” as the first large-scale theater event in New York City last summer was as Shakespearean as its subject.

“And here I was thinking this was going to be a boring documentary,” playwright Jocelyn Bioh, who reset the comedy among a diasporic African community in Harlem, told Variety last week at an intimate premiere for the new doc.

“Theater was the last thing on my mind,” she said, recounting when director Saheem Ali first asked her to retool the little known comedy into a needed telling of Black joy. “There were big questions for me: Why should we be doing this right now?...

Only Murders In the Building Season 1 Episode 5 Review: Twist
On Only Murders In the Building Season 1 Episode 5, we are finally out of the Arconia and on the road!

Charles and Oliver spy Mabel with tie-dye guy and decide to tail her in Oliver's unfortunate clunker, Aphrodite.

There's plenty to unpack, so let's dive -- or drive -- in!

Called it! The tie-dye guy is none other than Oscar Suarez! At this point, though, he seems much more benign than originally suspected.

Even though he's been in prison for ten years, Mabel still greets him with fearless, open arms (once she puts away her knitting needle).

The chemistry between them is palpable. There is definitely something going on between them. All I can say is find someone who looks at you the way Mabel looks at Oscar!

The voiceover from Oscar was a nice touch, too.

Will we be getting voiceovers from a new character each episode? We've already heard from Charles,...

Jacob Ming-Trent Leads Delightful ‘Merry Wives’ In Central Park Celebration – Review
Image
New York City is getting another shot in the arm this summer with Free Shakespeare in the Park’s happy Merry Wives, playwright Jocelyn Bioh’s embraceable adaptation of the Bard’s The Merry Wives of Windsor starring Watchmen‘s Jacob Ming-Trent as that great, rotund creation Falstaff.

Briefly delayed by injury and Covid, Merry Wives opens tonight as a most welcome – and, with vaccines required, as safe as can be – escape from the woes of the world. With an update to a contemporary South Harlem peopled with a splendid assemblage of West African immigrant characters, Merry Wives enhances the classic farce with up-to-the-minute references, the occasional brief snippet of R&b crooning, and a same-sex romance that seems completely at home in the setting.

If the intermission-less production, directed by Saheem Ali, doesn’t quite reach the joyous heights of Kwame Kwei-Armah and Shaina Taub similarly updated Twelfth Night,...

The episode marked the strongest digital debut for the premium cable channel since the launch of “Westworld” in 2016.

Last night, HBO’s 9 p.m. airing of the finale episode, titled “See How They Fly,” alone drew 935,000 viewers, which is an improvement of 14% over last week’s installment and 17% above the series debut, which brought in 800,000 viewers with its initial telecast, according to HBO. HBO’s ‘Watchmen’ Holds Strong With 1.3 Million Viewers In Week 2
Regina King in Watchmen (2019)
It looks like audiences have found their new favorite sci-fi fantasy series to watch on Sunday nights with Watchmen. The series created by Damon Lindelof and starring Regina King held strong in its second week out, garnering more than 1.3 million viewers Sunday night across all platforms.

Watchmen had some competition with Game 5 of the World Series and Sunday Night Football this past week but managed to retain most of its audience from last week’s premiere, with the 9 Pm airing drawing 765,000 viewers. The digital audience was within 4% of last week’s debut despite most new series declining in their second weeks.

Last week, the Watchmen premiere delivered 1.5 million viewers across all HBO platforms. That was 21% above the Succession season finale in the time slot and marked the strongest debut performance for a series on HBO’s digital platforms since the premium cabler debuted Westworld in 2016. The 9 Pm linear telecast of the freshman series averaged 800,000 viewers,...

‘Watchmen’ Premiere Draws 1.5 Million Viewers, Delivering HBO’s Strongest Digital Debut Since ‘Westworld’
Regina King in Watchmen (2019)
Watchmen, Damon Lindelof’s anticipated series based on the award-winning Alan Moore graphic novel, debuted Sunday night to strong numbers, delivering 1.5 million viewers across all HBO platforms.

The linear premiere telecast of the new drama starring Regina King was 21% above last week’s Succession season finale in the time slot. It also marked the strongest debut performance for a series on HBO’s digital platforms since the premium cabler debuted Westworld in 2016, another series based on an existing sci-fi/fantasy property.

The 9 Pm linear telecast of the freshman series averaged 800,000 viewers, making it premium cable’s most-watched new series debut this year.

The new series isn’t a straight adaptation of the graphic novel, but more of a sequel that finds an America ruled by long-serving President Robert Redford. Its an alternative 2019 America where the best intentions have seen technology curtailed, the police are now hidden by masks like the outlawed superheroes,...

New Trailer For HBO's Watchmen Teases The Twists and Turns That Lay Ahead
The first episode of HBO’s Watchmen series premiered last night and it was great! I loved what writer and creator Damon Lindelof has done with this show and the story that he’s set up, which is set years after the events of the graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons.

This is just the beginning of what looks like will be an incredible show and we have a new trailer to share with you that shows us what we can expect in the upcoming episodes and it teases some twists and turns that will be coming. Obviously, if you haven’t watched the first episode yet, you probably don’t want to watch this until after you have.

Damon Lindelof Says HBO's Watchmen is a Self Contained One Season Series
According to Watchmen series creator Damon Lindelof, the nine-episode show will be a self-contained story that will give viewers a complete resolution at the end. This series could only be one season, but that doesn’t mean it will be. We could get another Watchmen season, but Lindelof doesn’t know if it will happen.

While talking to Deadline, Lindelof explained:

“Does that mean that there isn’t going to be anymore Watchmen? Not necessarily. Does that mean that I will be working on subsequent seasons of Watchmen? I don’t know is the answer to that question. We designed these nine episodes to be as self-contained as the original 12 issues. We wanted to feel like there was a sense of completeness, to resolve the essential mystery at hand.”

I’ll wait and watch the series before I even decide if I want to see a second one. But, I am excited for the series!

New Watchmen Photo Features Jeremy Irons as Ozymandias and Damon Lindelof Discusses How The Series Handles Race
We’ve got another new photo from HBO’s Watchmen sequel series to share with you that offers us another look at Jeremy Irons riding a horse. Irons is said to be taking on the role of Adrian Veidt a.k.a. Ozymandias in the series.

Showrunner Damon Lindelof also opened up about the group of white supremacists who will be a focal point of the series, and how race will be handled.

“We talked a lot about racism. We asked what’s the thing that’s causing a tremendous amount of anxiety in America today? The only authentic answer was race."

As for why the racist group in the series are wearing Rorschach masks, Lindelof explains he wanted to explore Rorschach’s alt-right views:

"I don’t wanna editorialise on whether or not Rorschach was a white supremacist. I don’t think he was, but he certainly had what...

Watchmen: New Trailer Hints at 'Vast and Insidious Conspiracy,' Shows Regina King in Masked-Badass Mode
War is brewing in the latest trailer for HBO’s Watchmen, so we’re going to get this out of the way early: We’re on whatever side Regina King’s Angela plays for.

If the reasoning put forth at the beginning of the clip is to be believed, Angela is driven by trauma, obsessed with justice and has experienced grievous injustice in her lifetime. But that doesn’t stop her from donning a mask and kicking down doors in the pursuit of good — even if that means, as she informs Don Johnson’s police chief Judd Crawford, getting a little rough.

HBO Announces Premiere Date For Watchmen TV Series
When it comes to the comic book medium, there tend to be a handful of standout titles readers often regard as being akin to holy writ. More often than not, two of the most highly acclaimed contributions to the industry are swiftly referenced whenever a conversation such as this arises, and they’re both products of the 1980’s. These are, of course, Watchmen and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns.

When it comes to Watchmen specifically, that hadn’t been branched out until more recent years. Following the big screen adaptation in 2009, not much time went by before DC began putting out prequel miniseries under the banner of Before Watchmen. And more recently, they released a sequel of their own, Doomsday Clock, that integrates characters like Rorschach, Dr. Manhattan and Ozymandias into the DC Universe itself.

HBO, meanwhile, is developing an alternative sequel for television, still titled Watchmen. Though it may...
