One of the most well-reviewed Marvel shows in recent memory is probably one many fans have not watched. Sporting a 100% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur follows a 13-year-old girl named Lunella, a supergenius who accidentally brings a (very lovable) dinosaur into modern-day New York City. After being unceremoniously canceled last year, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur will be ending on its own terms with the back half of Season 2.

Joan Didion’s oft-quoted dictum about how we tell ourselves stories in order to live presupposes that you can and will use the tools to tell yourself that very story. But what happens when language fails you? What happens when its breakages risk keeping you from even vocalizing what it is that could help you live? Writer-director Anna Baumgarten’s “Disfluency” tackles those questions by telling the story of a young woman struggling to find herself anew. Well-meaning and clearly trying to offer up a twist on what’s unfortunately a well-worn tale about the aftermath of sexual abuse, “Disfluency” is nevertheless bogged down by its desire to wrap that narrative within the linguistics jargon its title alludes to.
Disfluency, as the film’s very first scene informs us, is a break or irregularity in speech. “Speech is not perfect because we are not perfect,” a professor lecturing an unseen class informs.

Jane (Libe Barer) walks through the dimly lit halls of Disfluency, a place that feels familiar and strangely foreign to her. Though her journey takes place against the background of a summer spent at the house where she grew up, every step is weighed down by the weight of an unspoken trauma that seems bigger than life itself. After failing college, Jane returns as a lost daughter, her past mistakes still fresh in her mind.
The tender yet intricate relationships she has with her mother, father, and sister, Lacey (Ariela Barer), are filled with the familiar pain of family love mixed with sadness, creating an emotional tapestry that is both rich and suffocating.
This film, marketed as a coming-of-age drama, skillfully navigates the tricky waters of trauma and trauma, revealing how the terrifying shadows of the past can disrupt the flow of life, much like the muddles that characterize Jane’s speech.

November wound up covering a lot of ground. We dipped a toe into pre-Code territory with Albert Ray’s 1932 title The Thirteenth Guest (listen), stayed at “Aaron’s” cabin in Creep 2 (listen), and got our hair done with Jill Gevargizian’s 2020 film The Stylist (listen).
Now we’re talking about gay screenwriter Devon Graye and director Adam Randall‘s under seen and under rated thriller I See You (2019).
In the film, police detective Greg (Jon Tenney) is struggling with his wife Jackie (Helen Hunt)’s infidelity as he works a new case with partner Spitzky (Gregory Alan Williams). The case is a child abduction that bears a striking similarity to events from 15 years ago. As Greg and Jackie’s teenage son Conor (Judah Lewis) blames his mother, strange events begin occurring around the house.
