“Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” the third iteration in the film franchise based on Sega’s enduring speedster, will be available to stream on Paramount+ on Feb. 18.

The third “Sonic” feature picks up with the blue blur, along with Tails the Fox and Knuckles the Echidna, having to team up with their nemesis Dr. Robotnik to take on the superlatively edgy threat of Shadow the Hedgehog.

The film opened on top of the North American box office back in December, earning $60 million in its first outing and continuing to score as a high earner through the holiday season. A fourth film is already in the works for Paramount, set to be released in 2027.

Speaking to ScreenRant, Rothwell was asked if she was looking forward to reprising her role as Rachel in the next Sonic the Hedgehog film, as well as what impression her experience on the past three entries in the series had left on her. "I hope so. I mean, Jeff Fowler, he's just so lovely. And Toby Asher and the gang, Tika, James, like I've been in all of them and so absolutely I'll come back," Rothwell responded. "What's so crazy about the third one, I flew to London to shoot my scenes for the third one and then went to Thailand. So I literally stopped and shot it and then kept going. So it's cool to look back because I'm just like, I barely remember being there because it was such a whirlwind of a trip.

I should probably stop being surprised that the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has become so successful, especially after the third film has pushed the series over the billion-dollar mark. Paramount is keen to keep the little blue speedster and his pals around a little longer, as they’ve officially slated Sonic the Hedgehog 4 for a March 19, 2027 release.

The post-credit scene of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 did give fans a hint as to where the franchise will go next, but the fourth installment is still in the early stages with no director or star attachments at the moment. Jeff Fowler helmed the first three movies, so it stands to reason that he’ll be back for Sonic 4, but you never know.

Loo Break: There is very little room for rest, maybe the start of the second act, but the film moves at a great pace.

Dual performances always catch the eye, and they have often been used to showcase multiple sides to an actor's talents. Jim Carrey has been getting a lot of attention for playing two characters in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and some of the most exciting movies of 2025 also feature actors working overtime. Robert Pattinson, Robert De Niro and Michael B. Jordan all have dual roles lined up for 2025.

Actors mostly play multiple characters in comedy movies, just like Carrey in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Other common reasons for having a dual performance in a movie include stories with twins, or sci-fi movies with clones or humanoid robots. The big addition for the threequel is Keanu Reeves voicing Shadow the Hedgehog – a fan favorite character from the franchise. Jim Carrey is also back and this time pulling double duty playing both Ivo and Gerald Robotnik. Ben Schwartz also returns once again to voice the titular speedster.

The speedy blue hedgehog returns for a third instalment in Sega’s Sonic franchise, based on the popular video game series. This time round, the film is actually an improvement on the previous two movies, thanks to a couple of key factors, namely Jim Carrey pulling double duty and an inspired voice performance from Keanu Reeves.

As audiences across the globe race to theaters to check out the Blue Blur's third adventure, Paramount Pictures is moving forward with a fourth installment, titled Sonic the Hedgehog 4, and have already slated it for an early 2027 release. 

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 features two post-credit sequences, both of which set up future stories, so this announcement was more of an inevitability than not, but it's certainly nice of the studio to make it official before the latest film's launch. 

Early tracking buzz is projecting an opening in the $55 million to $60 million range for the Jeff Fowler-directed threequel, which likely means it will top the weekend box office, swiping the crown from Disney's Mufasa: The Lion King.
