“I am not going to cry for you”: Tom Cruise Remembered His Father Who Died of Cancer for an Emotional Scene With Jason Robards
Image
Tom Cruise is synonymous with danger as his high-stakes stunts leave the audience in awe of his daredevilry. One of the best action stars to have come out of the film industry, he has proven time and time again that there is nothing he is scared of. Just look at every Mission: Impossible film! The stunts only increase in terms of insanity.

However, reducing Tom Cruise to an action hero does not do justice to his versatility as an actor. He has pulled off every kind of role you could imagine. He has made you laugh in Tropic Thunder, left you terrified in Collateral, and made you bawl your eyes out in Magnolia. Speaking of Magnolia, did you know that he had to take inspiration from his personal life to deliver one of the most heartwrenching scenes of his career?

Tom Cruise’s emotional performance in Magnolia was inspired by...

Legendary filmmaker and artist David Lynch died Thursday at the age of 78. “There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us,” the director’s family wrote online. “But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole. It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way.'”

David Lynch, Cinematic Legend Behind Twin Peaks And Blue Velvet, Has Died At 78
Image
David Lynch, one of the most beloved and influential filmmakers in the history of American cinema, has died at the age of 78. The news was confirmed on Lynch's official Facebook page with the following statement:

"It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch. We would appreciate some privacy at this time. There's a big hole in the world now that he's no longer with us. But, as he would say, 'Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.' It's a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way."

Lynch is known for films like "Eraserhead" (his feature directorial debut), "Blue Velvet," and "Mulholland Drive," but perhaps his best-known work is the surreal, atmospheric murder mystery series "Twin Peaks," which ran for two seasons in the early '90s, received a...

David Lynch, Auteur Drawn to the Dark and the Dreamlike, Dies at 78
David Lynch
David Lynch, the writer-director whose films and TV series including Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive and Twin Peaks portrayed a seemingly bucolic America, only to reveal it as teeming with the mysterious and macabre, has died. He was 78.

Lynch’s death was announced on his Facebook page:

“It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch. We would appreciate some privacy at this time. There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.’ … It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way.”

In August, he revealed that he was suffering from emphysema after many years of smoking and that he couldn’t leave home for fear that he would get Covid-19.

Why David Lynch, One Of Our Greatest Living Filmmakers, May Never Direct Again
Image
When David Lynch revealed late last year in an interview that he'd been diagnosed with emphysema, it was hard not to prepare for the inevitable. The filmmaker's longtime affection for cigarettes had at long last irrevocably damaged his health, which would likely curtail his creative pursuits. The lung condition causes chronic shortness of breath, which, of course, is exacerbated by physical activity. Given that directing can be a very stressful job, what with budgets and deadlines and the uncertainty of human behavior that lies at the heart of all artistic collaborations, it felt like Lynch would probably have to alter his creative process for his health's sake.

In a new interview with Sight and Sound, Lynch revealed that his emphysema has progressed to the point that he's "homebound whether I like it or not." Covid is a particular concern for the 78-year-old filmmaker, as any respiratory ailment would make it...

The Best New Blu-Ray Releases: Nope, Lost Highway, Beast And More
Image
This might be the biggest Blu-ray column we've ever published here. I tell you this for no real reason, I just want to impress you. In this latest Blu-ray round-up, we have the newest Jordan Peele movie, a David Lynch horror masterpiece headed to 4K from the Criterion Collection, Brad Pitt making terrible jokes in between okay fight scenes, Idris Elba fighting a lion, a suburban family fighting some ghosts, and much more. Keep those discs spinning.

Nope

One of the best movies of the year, Jordan Peele's "Nope" is at first blush a film about aliens and UFOs. But as usual, Peele has a lot more on his mind — specifically, the way we, as humans, approach spectacles and dare to push back against things that we should probably leave alone. This is Peele's slickest movie yet, with the filmmaker going into full Spielberg mode to create the type of thrilling flick that's funny,...

Dietrich & von Sternberg in Hollywood

With her commanding screen presence, Marlene Dietrich was an early cinema force to be reckoned with. Taking far more control over her image that her colleagues, the German actress found a fruitful relationship with Josef von Sternberg in Hollywood.
