Older brother of Lapo Elkann (born in New York City on October 7th, 1977) and Ginevra Elkann (born in London on September 24th, 1979).

Nephew of Edoardo Agnelli.

His parents married in 1975 but divorced in 1981. Both of them remarried. His mother married Serge de Pahlen with whom she had 5 children who are John's younger half-siblings: Pietro, Sofia, Anna, Maria and Tatiana de Pahlen.

He was born in the US, then moved to the UK, Brazil, France and Italy. As a result of his international upbringing, he is fluent in four languages.

Among the many guests at his marriage with Lavinia Borromeo were Henry Kissinger, Luca Montezemolo, Michel Platini, Carla Bruni, Eva Herzigova and Elle Macpherson.

His wife Lavinia gave birth to their first child, a son, Leone Mosé Elkann on August 26th, 2006. He was born in Turin, Italy at 9.45 AM and weighed 3.250 Kg. His name means "Lion".

Son of Alain Elkann and Margherita Agnelli (born in Lausanne, Switzerland on October 26th, 1955). His maternal grandfather was the longtime head of the Fiat automobile company Giovanni Agnelli.

His maternal grandparents were the Italian socialite Marella Agnelli (born Donna Marella Caracciolo di Castagneto, on May 4th, 1927) and the industrialist Giovanni Agnelli (12 march 1921 - 24 January 2003). His paternal grandparents were French Jewish industrialist Jean-Paul Elkann (1921 - 1996) and Carla Ovazza.

On September 4th, 2004 he married Lavinia Borromeo in a Roman Catholic ceremony on Isola Madre, one of the Borromean Islands of Lake Maggiore (Piedmont, Italy). The Borromean Islands take their name from the Italian aristocratic Borromeo family and Lavinia is one of their descendants.

As of 2015, he has two nephews and a niece from his sister Ginevra's marriage to Giovanni Gaetani dell'Aquila d'Aragona: Giacomo (b. 2009), Pietro (b. 2012) and Marella (b. 2014).

He obtained a baccalauréat scientifique at the State School Lycée Victor-Duruy of Paris (France) in 1994. Later he attended the Politecnico di Torino (Turin, Italy), where he graduated with a degree in management engineering in 2000.

Beatrice Borromeo is his half sister-in-law.

Distant cousin of Delfina Rattazzi and of Italian actor Pietro Sermonti.

Susanna Agnelli was his grandfather Giovanni Agnelli's sister.
