Netflix just renewed one of its newest teen hits everyone’s talking about
Image
On May 14, Netflix held its third-ever upfront event, where the streaming giant announced several renewals for some of its fan-favorite shows and new series. One of the new shows to receive a renewal was Forever, a teen series that has quickly gained popularity since its debut last week. Forever season 2 is officially happening at Netflix!

This renewal comes as somewhat of a surprise, seeing as though the show's first season was just released a week ago. Netflix doesn't usually hand out renewals this quickly, especially for its new series. The streaming service typically waits to gauge audience response, completion rates, and overall viewership data before making a decision. This early renewal of Forever suggests the show has performed strongly out of the gate, generating enough buzz and engagement to justify a second season so soon.

As of May 15, Forever is one of the most popular shows on Netflix at the...

Forever delivers the Black coming-of-age love story we’ve all been waiting for
Image
The one teen show you're not watching and should be is Forever on Netflix. All eight episodes of the first season are now available to stream. It might seem like your typical teen series on the surface, but it offers something far more profound. Beneath the romance and high school drama, Forever delivers a heartfelt, deeply authentic Black coming-of-age story, something I'd argue we don't see enough of in mainstream media. The teen love story is just the icing on the cake, and it's so relatable in the way it captures the messiness of first love, the insecurities of growing up, and the pressures of trying to figure out who you are in a world full of expectations.

I can't emphasize enough how incredible this new Netflix show is, and all credit goes to its creator, Mara Brock Akil. She took Judy Blume's iconic 1975 novel and transformed it into a modern,...

Forever on Netflix release date, time, and what to expect
Image
Get ready to be swept away by Forever on Netflix, a heartwarming and dramatic teen series that explores the messy, beautiful journey of first love, self-discovery, and everything in between. It premieres on the streaming platform tomorrow, and I promise you won’t want to miss a single episode. That's why we're here to share everything you need to know before diving in, including the official release date and time.

If you're a book lover, chances are you're probably wondering why the show's title sounds so familiar. That’s because Forever is based on the 1975 YA novel of the same name by Judy Blume. The book, known for its honest portrayal of first love, relationships, and sexual awakening, is a classic that has resonated with generations of readers. Now, Netflix brings this iconic story to life, offering a fresh and modern take on the beloved tale.

Mara Brock Akil, who...

4 new Netflix shows to watch (and 3 to skip) in May 2025
Image
Even though we're all counting down the days until all of our favorite Netflix shows like Stranger Things, Wednesday (which now has a return date!), Emily in Paris, and more return with new seasons later this year, the streaming service isn't cutting corners with its new shows in the meantime. In May 2025, there are plenty of titles to keep our watch lists stocked with great content.

Beyond the exciting, high-profile releases coming in May, such as The Four Seasons, Sirens, and the latest binge-able drama from Tyler Perry, Netflix has even more great shows to offer. May also brings Big Mouth season 8, Thank You, Next season 2, The Royals, Secrets We Keep, and Love, Death & Robots. There's definitely no shortage in shows to watch on Netflix in the coming month.

But which of the best new Netflix shows are worth watching in May and which are best left skipped, either altogther or for a rainy day?...

Lonely Planet Review — A Maudlin Vacation Romance
Image
The resurrection of “May-December” romances in popular culture has resulted in an explosion in movies covering the topic. Usually, the A-tier level actress finds themselves in a relationship with a younger man for various reasons, and the two struggle to find a middle ground. Lonely Planet touches similar territory, this time starring Laura Dern and Liam Hemsworth as the slowly developing romance. Directed by Sussanah Grant, Lonely Planet tries to sell us on a budding romance. However, with a lack of chemistry and overwritten screenplay, it’s hard to buy this as anything more than a Netflix middling experience.

‘The Perfect Couple’ Showrunner Eyes More Elin Hilderbrand Adaptations Following Outsized Success Of Netflix Limited Series
Image
More adaptations of Elin Hildebrand’s addictive beach reads are seemingly on their way, which spells good news for fans of the delectable six-episode Netflix adaptation of her murder mystery The Perfect Couple.

Since landing on Netflix on September 5, The Perfect Couple has exceeded expectations, not only racking up sizable viewership on the streamer but also going viral on social media for its wacky, tonally different opening credit dance sequence.

The series tallied 10.4M views in its second full week on the streamer from September 16 to 22, coming in second place among TV, bested only by Ryan Murphy’s true crime drama Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, which launched last Wednesday. It even beat Season 4B of Emily in Paris, which had its first full week of availability. That’s after it easily stole the top spot on the last two lists, accumulating more than 20M views in its debut weekend.

‘The Perfect Couple’ Director Susanne Bier Unpacks Netflix Show’s ‘Magical Group Dynamic’ And Winbury Family’s ‘Undercurrent of Compassion’
Image
Spoiler Alert: This post contains light spoilers for The Perfect Couple.

Bird Box and The Undoing director Susanne Bier sees the Winbury family as what gives Netflix’s The Perfect Couple adaptation its distinction.

Based on the novel by Elin Hilderbrand and adapted for the screen by Jenna Lamia, the six-episode series watches a luxurious weekend of wedding festivities spiral out of control when a dead body is found on the shores of its Nantucket setting. Nicole Kidman stars as mother of the groom Greer Garrison-Winbury, and Liev Schreiber plays her husband Tag. Rounding out the cast is Eve Hewson as bride-to-be Amelia Sacks, Billy Howel as groom-to-be Benji Winbury, Meghann Fahy as Amelia’’s maid of honor, Jack Reynor as Benji’s older brother Thomas and Dakota Fanning as Thomas’ wife Abby among others. There are many players in the guessing game, and everyone has a secret that gives them motive.

Steven Spielberg is coming back with yet another intriguing movie about which only a little is known till now. Earlier rumors claimed Emily Blunt is in talks for the lead role. Now, Netflix’s The Perfect Couple star, Eve Hewson is also in talks for the movie, whether for the same role or a different one is not known yet.

Blunt’s post-Oppenheimer box office run hasn’t been stellar. The Fall Guy came and went totally overlooked by moviegoers. With the animated movie If in the mix also not having done that great, landing a Spielberg flick could be her chance to turn things around. Missing out on this role would be a real nightmare for her!

‘The Perfect Couple’: What Changed from the Book
Image
Editor’s note: This post contains spoilers for “The Perfect Couple,” including the ending.

Netflix’s six-part adaptation of Elin Hilderbrand’s 2018 book “The Perfect Couple” is a loyal adaptation of the beloved, bestselling murder mystery that stars Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber, Meghann Fahy, Dakota Fanning, and more.

The story follows a wedding weekend in Nantucket where fancy author Greer (Kidman) has planned an elaborate wedding for her son Benji (Billy Howle) and his bride-to-be Amelia (Eve Hewson). The morning of the wedding, however, Amelia’s maid of honor Merritt (Fahy) washes up dead on the beach and the story becomes a whodunnit, with nearly everyone harboring secrets and motives, including affairs, greed, lust, and envy.

The book switches up timelines as well as perspectives, with several characters all getting their narrator moment. In IndieWire’s review of the Netflix series, Ben Travers wrote that it “invites you to guess the killer,...

The Perfect Couple episode 1 perfectly sets up the mysterious story (Review)
Image
Netflix's new murder mystery drama The Perfect Couple dropped all six episodes today, and boy is it filled with a star-studded cast! You've got Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber, Eve Hewson, Meghann Fahy, and Dakota Johnson just to name a few. Right now, we're reviewing the premiere episode, "Happy Wedding Eve." Spoilers Below.

This first episode (recap here) really just lays down all the groundwork and establishes each character and where they're at. And there's lots of them so we need to get to know each of them. For example, Amelia confides in her best friend and maid of honor Merritt that she doesn't feel that passion and pull you're supposed to feel towards Benji. Like, ok girl. You're saying this now?

Just like Merritt says, it's not too late to back out if that's what you really want. But I mean, it's the night before the wedding.

‘The Perfect Couple’ Review: Nicole Kidman’s Frothy Netflix Murder-Mystery Offers Limited Fun
Image
“The Perfect Couple’s” title sequence is simultaneously the key to appreciating Susanne Bier’s frothy summer mystery and to understanding exactly why I’ve already forgotten it exists. Set to Meghan Trainor’s “Criminals,” the 30-second clip gathers most of the cast in a choreographed dance mimicking a flash mob. There’s Nicole Kidman, right out in front, rhythmically raising her arms above her head. Next to her is Liev Schreiber, looking like a disheveled accountant in a disheveled black suit, his little round glasses as stationary as his self-serious expression. In front of them is Eve Hewson, clapping and spinning in a bright red dress next to “The White Lotus” breakout Meghann Fahy, who caps the routine by sticking out her tongue — a touch of fun, impromptu sass now that the regimented arrangement is over.

Their performance complete, everyone laughs and hugs each other. They’re happy and proud,...

The Perfect Couple episode 1 recap: The top three questions after watching the premiere
Image
The Perfect Couple is now streaming on Netflix. The mystery drama follows Amelia Sacks (Eve Hewson) just days before her wedding with Benji (Billy Howle), who is part of the wealthiest family in the town of Nantucket, Massachusetts. Amelia and Benji are the perfect couple, expanding the already seemingly perfect and reputable Winbury family. But this all changes when the body of a wedding guest is discovered at the beach. And with it, come revelations and dark secrets.

On the subject of strong reputations, Netflix has delivered some of the best mystery dramas in the game. And with such an alluring cast that includes Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber, and Dakota Fanning, The Perfect Couple seemed like the streamer’s next big hit. Unfortunately, it doesn’t live up to the hype.

The Perfect Couple may not be what fans of the genre were searching for, but it is enough to...

The Perfect Couple episode 5 recap: "Never Gonna Give You Up"
Image
Warning: Major spoilers ahead from The Perfect Couple episode 5.

Picking up the day after Benji discovered Amelia and Shooter kissing at the end of episode 4, the nearly wedded couple have broken up. It's not stated explicitly, but she wakes up on a cot in her parents' room, and when Amelia runs into Greer in the kitchen in the morning, she vows she'll get a hotel for her and her parents to stay in. News of the breakup has clearly gone wide at the Winbury estate.

Surprisingly, Greer allows the Sacks family to stay, mostly because it's a holiday weekend the hotels in town will be booked. But her slight kindness dries up and the encounter doesn't end without a slight jab about Amelia's brief infidelity with Shooter. Playing her game, Amelia asks Greer about Tag's whereabouts. Turns out, he stayed the night at the police station. Yikes!

The Perfect Couple ending, explained: Who killed Merritt?
Image
The Perfect Couple, the six-episode Netflix series based on Elin Hilderbrand’s book of the same name, is now streaming on Netflix. It's going to be one of the most popular Netflix shows of September.

We watched all six episodes of The Perfect Couple, including the season finale, “That Feels Better,” and shared how the season ended.

Of course, the whole series has revolved around the big question: Who killed Merritt Monaco (Meghann Fahy)? Early in the series, Merritt washed up dead on the beachper on the morning of the wedding between Amelia (Eve Hewson), Merritt’s best friend, and Benji (Billy Howle) at the Winbury house on Nantucket.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, there were a lot of people who could have been interested in killing Merritt. I don’t know if the actual explanation makes all that much sense, but we’ll roll with it.

Spoilers ahead for The Perfect Couple finale!

Netflix's new limited series The Perfect Couple is sure to generate buzz with its star-studded cast and addicting murder mystery premise. The six-episode show stars Nicole Kidman as Greer Garrison Winbury, a successful author and the matriarch of a wealthy family living in Nantucket. On the night of one of her three sons Benji's (Billy Howle) wedding welcome party, his bride-to-be Amelia (Eve Hewson) makes a shocking discovery — a dead body. Nicole Kidman’s diverse portfolio is proof of why she is counted among the best A-list actresses in Hollywood. From superhero to horror, sci-fi to action-thrillers, Kidman has made a mark in every genre. Her latest movie will be dabbling in eroticism, A24’s Babygirl.

Babygirl is the kind of movie Nicole Kidman has never done before. The 57-year-old’s new venture explores women’s sexuality and touches on the concepts of kink and social norms. It might be her best movie yet, even surpassing her 1999 erotic mystery Eyes Wide Shut with Tom Cruise.

‘The Perfect Couple’ Trailer: No One is Above the Law, No Matter How Wealthy
Image
It’s all fun and games until someone ends up dead for one wealthy family and their friends in Netflix’s The Perfect Couple. A detective on the case declares, “These people are used to getting whatever they want. The minute they feel they are losing control, they burn it all down,” and truer words have never been spoken.

The murder mystery’s official trailer arrived just ahead of its September 5, 2024 premiere and features Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber, Meghann Fahy, Eve Hewson, and Dakota Fanning. Ishaan Khatter, Billy Howle, and Jack Reynor also star in the six-episode limited series.

“Amelia Sacks is about to marry into one of the wealthiest families on Nantucket. Her disapproving future mother-in-law, famous novelist Greer Garrison Winbury, has spared no expense in planning what promises to be the premiere wedding of the season — until a body turns up on the beach,” reads Netflix’s synopsis.

‘Next Goal Wins’ Trailer #2: Based on a True Underdog Story

In trailer two for Searchlight Pictures’ Next Goal Wins, writer/director Taika Waititi jokes that he went into the comedy knowing nothing about soccer…and came out knowing even less. The new trailer also finds Waititi explaining that he was attracted to the sports film based on real events because it’s a story about triumphing over adversity.

The underdog comedy stars Michael Fassbender as soccer coach Thomas Rongen. Oscar Kightley, Kaimana, David Fane, Rachel House, Beulah Koale, Uli Latukefu, Semu Filipo, Lehi Falepapalangi, Will Arnett, and Elisabeth Moss also star in the PG-13 comedy.

Taika Waititi and Iain Morris wrote the screenplay, with Waititi, Jonathan Cavendish, Garrett Basch, Mike Brett, and Steve Jamison producing.

‘Next Goal Wins’ Scores Warm Reaction from TIFF Audience
Image
Searchlight will sail through award season with Venice winner “Poor Things” and Telluride hit “All of Us Strangers,” but the specialty distributor slotted Taika Waititi’s “Next Goal Wins” for audience-friendly Toronto for a reason. The world premiere audience responded warmly to what one-time Toronto People’s Choice winner Waititi (“Jojo Rabbit”) calls “a true understory” sports tale. He was developing for some time Steve Jamison and Mike Brett’s 2014 documentary about the infamously losing American Samoan soccer team who recover under heavy-drinking Dutch coach Thomas Rongen (a miscast Michael Fassbender), and eventually found a window in his schedule to film in Hawaii.

Early Twitter TIFF response ranged from the oft-repeated “crowd-pleaser” and “sweet” to “imperfect but endearing.” Waititi has had a stellar run, from “What We Do in the Shadows” and “Thor: Ragnarok” through “Jojo Rabbit,” which won the Oscar for Adapted Screenplay. On “Next Goal Wins,” critics will be less effusive.

TIFF 2023 Lineup Sets Kate Winslet’s ‘Lee,’ Viggo Mortensen’s ‘The Dead Don’t Hurt,’ and Many More World Premieres
Image
All film festivals face a challenged season ahead as most onscreen talent will be forced to sit this one out due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. Just last week, MGM and Luca Guadagnino yanked “Challengers” from the Venice opening night slot and shifted the movie entirely to April of next year.

But the Toronto International Film Festival forges ahead with a nevertheless starry lineup this year of 60 films across the Galas and Special Presentations sections, as announced Monday morning. The festival has not made an opening night selection but has so far also programmed Taika Waititi’s “Next Goal Wins” and Ladj Ly’s “Les Indésirables.”

Among the world premieres are Ellen Kuras’ “Lee,” starring Kate Winslet as war photographer Lee Miller and Andy Samberg as Life Magazine photographer David E. Scherman; Viggo Mortensen’s directorial effort “The Dead Don’t Hurt,” a Western starring himself and Vicky Krieps; Craig Gillespie...

‘Next Goal Wins’ Delivers a Winning First Trailer
Image
Writer/director Taika Waititi highlights his losing credentials at the beginning of the official Next Goal Wins trailer. He lost out on a Best Picture Oscar for Jojo Rabbit and even missed out on taking home a Teen Choice Award for Thor: Ragnarok. Of course, given that Next Goal Wins is about a team of losers, Waititi refrains from boasting about his Oscar win for Jojo Rabbit‘s screenplay, his Independent Spirit Awards win for Reservation Dogs, or his Writers Guild Awards win.

Next Goal Wins is inspired by a true story that the trailer teases “pretty much actually happened.” Michael Fassbender leads the cast as soccer coach Thomas Rongen, a down-on-his-luck, recently fired coach who is charged with turning around the world’s worst soccer team. Rongen reluctantly takes over head coach duties after the American Samoa soccer team lost to Australia 31-0 in 2001.

DOG_10803_RC Channing Tatum stars as Briggs and Lulu the Belgian Malinois in Dog A Metro Goldwyn Mayer Pictures film Photo credit: Hilary Bronwyn Gayle/Smpsp © 2022 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures Inc. All Rights Reserved

One of the major new movie releases this week poses a follow-up to the old chestnut about the friendship between a boy and his dog. So, does that extend into manhood? And would they be great “travel’ bros’ as in a buddy “road trip” adventure? Well, one of the silver screen’s “hunkiest” (maybe magical) leading men aims to explore that as he does double duty in front of and behind the camera. It’s a kibble-flavored popcorn flick as movie-goers embark on a hero’s journey alongside a lovable but difficult Dog.

The film’s title refers to Lulu (played by a trio of Belgian Malinois), a military canine trained to go into battle in the Middle East.

The director, who I’m a big fan of, is Mike Cahill. When it comes to sci-fi films, I’m your geek and this filmmaker has done two inspiring movies from the genre.

His first feature film as director, co-written with actress Brit Marling, Another Earth, about a parallel planet Earth, won the Alfred P. Sloan Prize at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and was picked up...
