What If...? Season 3 has been a mixed bag so far. While the episode starring Bucky Barnes and The Red Guardian was a very fun time, others have shined the spotlight on pretty strange premises.

However, things might have taken a turn for the better, and that's all thanks to episode five. Its story begins with an event audiences had already witnessed before in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it truly ponders the question: What would've happened if the heroes we all know and love failed to save Earth against cosmic threats?

What If...? season 3's fifth episode opens on a world with an army of drones called the Iron Federation marching through the streets. We find Riri Williams, a.k.a. Ironheart, heading to a motel as The Watcher explains that she fails her mission in every version of this reality. 

Meeting with Sharon Carter, Riri acquires an analogue part from an Easy Bake oven that's an essential part of whatever she's building. The Power Broker betrays her, though, and the Iron Federation closes in - many of them are revealed to be holograms - as Ironheart makes her escape in a makeshift suit.

However, it's then that White Vision attacks and, just as things look bleak for the hero, she's rescued by Wong, Okoye, Valkyrie, and Ying Nan. This is no normal Earth; it's the remnants of our planet in a reality where the Emergence happened years before the Eternals stopped it.

One of the most polarizing moments of the MCU remains the Emergence — the moment when a Celestial emerged from the Earth’s core in Eternals. With characters seemingly unwilling to acknowledge the event, it’s mostly disappeared from the popular consciousness. However, What If…? focuses on the impacts of the event in “What If… The Emergence Destroyed the Earth?” Focusing on this maligned moment, along with the choice to center Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne), makes this one of the more intriguing episodes of the season. However, the conclusion of “The Emergence Destroyed the Earth” really raises the importance of the latest What If…? episode.

Marvel Cinematic Universe’s What If…? has impressed the audience for three seasons. The animated show features some iconic actors from the MCU who lend their voices to their superhero characters.

The series is set in an alternate timeline and places the heroes in situations different from those in the films. What If…? Season 3, which marks the show’s final season, recently premiered on Disney+.

What If…? Season 3: Release Schedule

Instead of dropping all episodes together or following a weekly schedule, What If…? Season 3 has released one new episode daily since its premiere on December 22nd, 2024. The final season has eight episodes, one less than the previous two installments. The season finale and the series finale will be aired on December 29th, 2024. Here is the complete release schedule:

“What If…?” is back for one more round on Disney+, with Season 3 wrapping up Marvel’s animated series.

Beginning on Dec. 22, the streamer will release one new episode every day for eight days, each one reimagining the lives of various MCU characters. As always, Jeffrey Wright voices The Watcher, and several vets are returning to voice the animated versions of their characters.

But there are also new voices in there too. So, let’s break it down.

Episode 1

Episode 1 is called “What If…The Hulk fought the Mech Avengers?” and centers on Sam Wilson’s Captain America, as he has to don a massive mech suit to battle Bruce Banner after an attempt to cure himself of the Hulk goes horribly wrong. There are some significant reveals here, though the biggest is Mysterio's role in "What If...The Emergence destroyed the Earth?" With the planet no more, it appears Quentin Beck finds a way to take charge of what's left; could a Spider-Man: Far From Home retcon be in the works establishing him as a Multiversal threat?

We wouldn't bank on it but in this reality, he must have survived the events of that movie and become more than just a con man out to steal Tony Stark's technology.

Netflix on Thursday afternoon announced K-Pop: Demon Hunters (working title), a new animated feature bound for the streamer in 2025.

The first feature for Maggie Kang, who’s directing with Chris Appelhans (Netflix/Sony’s Wish Dragon), K-Pop: Demon Hunters is a musical action adventure pic that follows the story of a world-renowned K-Pop girl group, as they balance their lives in the spotlight with their secret identities as bad-ass demon hunters, set against a colorful backdrop of fashion, food, style and the most popular music movement of this generation.

We already knew Michelle Yeoh was a great actress, but her recent performance as Evelyn Wong in "Everything Everywhere All At Once" was a milestone highlight in an already impressive career. The audience gets to watch as her character transforms from a somewhat narrow-minded, stressed-out woman into quite possibly the most powerful person in existence. DreamWorks Animation has announced the cast, set the premiere date and unveiled the trailer for Abominable and The Invisible City, the 10-episode series inspired by the 2019 film Abominable. Alan Cumming (The Good Wife) joins Abominable alums Chloe Bennet (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Tenzing Trainor (Liv and Maddie) and Michelle Wong. All 10 episodes of Abominable and The Invisible City will premiere on Peacock and Hulu on October 5.

Bennet reprises her role as Yi and Trainor as Jin, with Cumming joining as Burnish. In addition to Wong, the voice cast also includes Ethan Loh, Karen Huie and Darin De Paul.

Lin-Manuel Miranda in the animated musical “Vivo” plays an adorable-looking kinkajou, or a “honey bear” native to the rain forest. And he’s been tasked with delivering a song and a love letter to a music superstar played by Gloria Estefan.

This first trailer for “Vivo” comes from Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation, and the film features new songs from the “Hamilton” creator as the kinkajou also named Vivo as he travels across the world. He teams up with an energetic tween girl to help him get to Estefan’s character and deliver a song that will change the world and help reconnect two former partners.

“Vivo” also stars in its voice cast Zoe Saldaña, Juan de Marcos, Brian Tyree Henry, Michael Rooker, Nicole Byer and newcomer Ynairaly Simo as Vivo’s plucky young travel companion.

Netflix dropped the full trailer Thursday for “Vivo,” Lin-Manuel Miranda’s love letter to Cuba and his first starring animated musical, made at Sony Pictures Animation (streaming August 6th). In addition to conceiving the idea a decade ago and writing eight original songs, Miranda voices the title character: a singer-musician kinkajou (a rainforest “honey bear”), who plays music in a lively Havana square with his beloved owner Andrés (Juan de Marcos of the Buena Vista Social Club). Exclusive: Netflix has licensed all global rights, sans China, to Sony Pictures Animation’s Vivo. The movie, directed by Oscar nominee Kirk DeMicco (The Croods) and co-directed by Brandon Jeffords (Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2) with new songs written and performed by Tony-winning Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, was recently scheduled for a theatrical release on June 4. The new drop date on Netflix is still to be determined.

I understand this is a similar deal to Netflix’s pickup of Sony’s Kevin Hart movie Fatherhood whereby Netflix gets the first window, which is streaming, and Sony will retain home entertainment and linear TV rights to all other territories, including China theatrical, after the pic’s exclusive run on the streamer.

Amazon has launched a recruitment drive to fill 1,000 new full-time apprenticeship positions across the U.K. over the coming year. Paid apprenticeships will be available in 25 fields including engineering, broadcast production, creative design, It, heal, safety and the environment. Two new broadcast production assistants will be recruited as part of the apprentices scheme and will join the Amazon Prime Video U.K. Originals team, working with Dan Grabiner on unscripted and Johnny Lewsley and Lydia Hampson on scripted.

Abominable has been frozen out of theaters in Vietnam.

The animated adventure from DreamWorks Animation and Shanghai-based Pearl Studios ran afoul of the Vietnamese government because of a map in the film illustrating China’s claims to a vast portion of the South China Sea, the BBC reported Monday.

The scene that touched off the controversy shows what’s known as China’s “nine dash line” in the background.

Back in my day, yeti’s were elusive creatures meant to be feared, much like Big Foot or Loch Ness. Films like “Smallfoot” and “Abominable” are paving the way towards acceptance were we ever to encounter a yeti, but the latter is more of a step back than forwards.

This is not a happy-go-lucky kid flick with slapstick characters. I appreciate the depth of the story, but did get a little bored with the drama. Universal Pictures has partnered with audio tech company TheaterEars to offer a Mandarin-language version of “Abominable” for Chinese-speaking moviegoers.

“Abominable,” produced by DreamWorks Animation and Pearl Studio, centers on the relationship between a modern Chinese teenager and a Yeti. By using the TheaterEars app, users will be able to listen to a Mandarin audio track at any of the 4,000 U.S. theaters showing the animated adventure.

The partnership marks the first time that a nationally released Hollywood movie has offered a Chinese audio option. Additionally, Universal and TheaterEars will also offer Spanish audio for the film. The film’s U.S. voice cast includes Chloe Bennet, Tenzing Norgay Trainor, Albert Tsai, Eddie Izzard, Sarah Paulson, Tsai Chin and Michelle Wong.

“Abominable” may feel boilerplate: Plucky loner finds an unexpected friend, a wild journey ensues with the help of a motley crew, and it ends with a buffet of lessons about the power of friendship, family, and self-respect. Also included: one incredibly cute magical yeti, all the better to incite both warm and squishy sentiments and encourage the inevitable purchase of a wide range of branded merchandise.

However, director Jill Culton adds unique touches to the formula including frequently stunning animation and goofy diversions of all stripe, along with at least two worrying soundtrack choices (kids like Coldplay?). The winning, warm nature of this China-set family film can’t be denied, and for all its predictable elements, “Abominable” is still well worth the trip.

Universal Pictures has released a trailer for the DreamWorks Animation and Pearl Studio’s co-production ‘Abominable’.

Directed by Jill Culton (Open Season) and produced by Suzanne Buirgy, the voice cast consists of Chloe Bennet, Tenzing Norgay Trainor, Albert Tsai, Eddie Izzard, Sarah Paulson, Tsai Chin and Michelle Wong.

Abominable Synopsis
