Podcast Talk: John Charles Meyer on ‘Dave Made a Maze,’ Screening in Chicago on June 6, 2017
Chicago – Truly unique and creative micro-budget films are as rare as a sighting of Bigfoot these days, as so many people are picking up a camera to give it try. The production of “Dave Made a Maze” is a happy exception, a film that delivers the thrills and at the same time makes fun of them. Throw in hipsters-in-peril and homages to 1980s adventure films, and it’s easy to find the way through this fun movie.

The ‘Kubrick Room’ in ‘Dave Made a Maze

Dave (Nick Thune) is a stay-at-home slacker who never can finish his many creative endeavors, much to the chagrin of his working partner Annie (Meera Rohit Kumbhani). Coming back from a business trip, Annie discovers kid size cardboard fort structure in their living room, and Dave is inside it. In fact, he’s been inside it for three days, unable to...

Dave Made a Maze (2017)
Gravitas Ventures acquires 'Dave Made A Maze'
Dave Made a Maze (2017)
The film will be released day-and-date on August 18.

Gravitas Ventures has acquired North American rights to Dave Made A Maze, the Slamdance audience award-winner for best narrative feature.

First-time director Bill Watterson’s offbeat comedy starring Nick Thune centres on an artist who builds a fort in his living room out of pure frustration, only to wind up trapped by the fantastical pitfalls, booby traps, and critters of his own creation.

The film, co-written by Steven Sears, also stars Meera Rohit Kumbhani, James Urbaniak, Stephanie Allynne, and Kirsten Vangsness.

“We wanted to re-imagine classic 80’s adventure films with a comedic edge and a higher body count,” Watterson said. “To reignite that tactile sense of wonder triggered by those films, we played in the sandbox of old-school practical effects – puppetry, miniatures, stop motion animation, and in-camera optical illusions.”

Gravitas Founder and CEO Nolan Gallagher said: “We’d never seen anything like Dave Made A Maze before. We were drawn...

Short Film Review: ‘Affliction’
At one time or another, we’ve all asked ourselves this one very crucial hypothetical question… “If I could have any one super power, what would it be?” For myself, it’s always been a toss up between invincibility or a Wolverine-like healing factor that’s off the charts. Then again, there’s something very intriguing about the powers of the mind. For Marvel comics fans, you understand the allure of Charles Xavier and Jean Grey, holding telepathic abilities with no rival, but with these great powers — no, I wasn’t going to say “comes great responsibility” — with these powers come a certain threat to one’s own sanity, in theory.

By now, you must be wondering why I’ve been rambling on about super heroes. To clarify, Affliction is not about super heroes… well, not in the traditional sense. This 15-minute short film, written and directed by Amir Masud,...

The Millenium Bug and Storytelling: A Movie Review
*full disclosure: a screener of this film was provided by producer John Charles Meyer.

Director/writer: Kenneth Cran.

The Millenium Bug is an indie film from Kenneth Cran that deals with hillbillies, the Y2K and giant creatures living underground. No, this is not a hybrid of The Hills Have Eyes and Tremors, but something a little different. Set on December 31st, 1999, the day before Y2K, The Millenium Bug deals with some of the fears that came with a computing programming problem that was more anti-climactic, than anything else. Unfortunately, this film has a problem or two involving a weakly and awkwardly developed story. However, Cran's production team makes up for some of these weaknesses with stunning visuals. The sets, models and creature effects are all delivered with no CGI and the result is impressive. After the credits roll, despite the film's drawbacks, The Millenium Bug left this reviewer with a satisfied feeling.

Movie Review: The Millennium Bug, A Monster Movie Unleashed For A New Generation!
The Millennium Bug is any monster movie fans breath of fresh air! A movie with a fun story, crazy characters, a giant monster, with lots of blood, gore and dismemberments, all without the use of CGI. Plus this is an indie film people! I’d put it up against any studio monster movie, period! Godzilla meet The Millennium Bug!

Writer and director Kenneth Cran definitely has an imagination with a much welcomed monster movie for a new generation! The movie follows the Haskins, escaping the Y2K scare as they head into the mountains. They meet up with a crazy, mutated, inbred hillbilly family who are set on brining in new blood to the family to limit the deformities from years of inbreeding. What we get with this family, the Crawfords is grotesque looks with killer instincts and lots of humor, yes this movie has just the right hint of humor in it!

The Millennium Bug (2011)
The Millennium Bug Movie Review – Dances With Films
The Millennium Bug (2011)
Title: The Millennium Bug Writer-director: Kenneth Cran Starring: John Charles Meyer, Jessica Simmons, Christine Haeberman, Jon Briddell, Ken McFarlane, Ginger Pullman A world premiere presentation at the just underway Dances With Films festival, ‘The Millennium Bug’ boasts a simple, streamlined concept, and features poster art that strongly echoes Sam Raimi’s ‘The Evil Dead’, so one could be forgiven for prematurely celebrating the birth into the genre world of a groovy, gory and blissfully self-aware new creature feature. Unfortunately, writer-director Kenneth Cran’s film, while admirably incorporating some low-tech elements, never has any fun with its zonkers conceit, and even touches let alone rises above the sum of its cliched parts. The...

The Millenium Bug: When Hillbillies Attack (First Trailer)!
At the end of 1999, people hid in fear of what could happen at nuclear power plants, because of the Y2K programming error. Nothing really happened back then, but now director Kenneth's Cran's film, The Millenium Bug, will show what can happen if you try to avoid the Y2K. Hillbillies will attack!

This first trailer for The Millenium Bug shows the Haskin family attempting to escape "Y2K hysteria" (Millenium). Instead, they wander into some crazed hillbillies, who then stumble into some larger-than-live monsters. The result is an independent horror fan's paradise. Watch the clip below, for the film, with a release date scheduled for late 2011. Thanks goes out to Quiet Earth and the Undead Backbrain, for providing the trailer.

The synopsis for The Millenium Bug is here:

"When the Haskin family seeks refuge from Y2K hysteria in the isolated forests of the Sierra Diablos mountains, madness and terror find them there.

Trailer Debut for The Millennium Bug looks awesomely sick!

Here's another cool ass looking indie film that has  surfaced this morning! This new trailer for The Millennium Bug looks like another winner to me!  The movie is directed by Kenneth Cran and stars Jon Briddell, Adam Brooks, Christine Haeberman, Trek Loneman, Ken MacFarlane, John Charles Meyer, Ian Pfister, Ginger Pullman, Ben Seton, Jessica Simons, Sandi Steinberg, Benjamin Watts, and Dustin Yoder. No CGI here peeps, the filmmakers went old school with this one and it looks good! Its set to be released later this year!  Let us know what you think!

Synopsis:

When the Haskin family seeks refuge from Y2K hysteria in the isolated forests of the Sierra Diablos mountains, madness and terror find them there. Abducted by a vicious hillbilly clan, the Haskins fight for survival, but neither they nor the hillbilly Crawfords can comprehend the monstrous nightmare about to erupt from the bowels of the earth.
