‘Lilo & Stitch’ Director Dean Fleischer Camp Hits Market With Hot Supernatural Romance Pitch
Image
Exclusive: After turning Disney’s Lilo & Stitch live-action pic into the first billion-dollar hit of 2025, director Dean Fleischer Camp has a new pitch in the market that he hopes sweeps buyers off their feet.

Sources tell Deadline that Camp and the producing team behind his Oscar-nominated animated pic Marcel the Shell With Shoes On have taken an untitled pitch for a supernatural romance to market with buyers already lining up. Camp will write and direct as well as produce alongside Marcel producers Andrew Goldman and Paul Mezey at Present Company as well as Caroline Kaplan.

The live-action pitch follows two star-crossed lovers during the Edwardian Age suddenly torn apart — not by society but by something much stranger. Given Camp’s track record of delivering projects that reach the masses but also get glowing reviews, the package is sure to attract plenty of suitors. Sources say after going out with it last week,...

How Much The White Lotus Cast Members Get Paid
Image
Every season of HBO's "The White Lotus" tells a new story about the luxurious yet scandalous lives of the rich and the disillusionment of the lower-class workers who wait on them hand and foot. In the mystical third season of "The White Lotus," Jason Isaacs' character Timothy Ratliff feels like an anvil has dropped on him when he learns his assets have been frozen after being investigated by the FBI for money laundering. He spends the entire vacation either sweating over the possibility of a phone call from his colleagues or contemplating taking his own life (and killing his entire family).

Despite exploring themes like privilege, colonialism, spirituality, and sex across its first three seasons, the main focus of Mike White's not-quite-anthology series "The White Lotus" has always been money, so it's no surprise that Vulture interviewer Andrew Goldman asked Jason Isaacs about the actor's salary, noting he'd heard...

‘Janet Planet’ Director Annie Baker’s Next Film ‘Ancient History’ Set at A24
Image
Annie Baker, the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and director of 2023’s “Janet Planet,” has set her next feature film, again teaming with A24, as an individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire.

Baker’s film is called “Ancient History,” which she wrote and will direct, and A24 has already set Sophia Lillis and Daniel Zolghadri to star in the film.

Plot details are being kept under wraps.

Producing “Ancient History” are Andrew Goldman via Present Company, as well as Johnny Holland and Baker.

“Janet Planet” first premiered at Telluride in 2023, and while the film had a very small specialized box office that did not cross $1 million, it earned Baker two Film Independent Spirit Award nominations for Best First Feature and Best First Screenplay, as well as a Gotham Award nomination for Best Screenplay. The film starred Julianne Nicholson and newcomer Zoe Ziegler as a mother and daughter living in rural Massachusetts.

Josh O’Connor Sundance Drama ‘Rebuilding’ Lands at Bleecker Street
Image
“Rebuilding,” a drama starring Josh O’Connor as a cowboy who loses his ranch to wildfires, has sold U.S. rights to Bleecker Street. The film premiered at Sundance and will debut in theaters later this year.

Max Walker-Silverman directed “Rebuilding,” which follows Dusty, a rancher who is forced into a Fema camp and unexpectedly reconnects with his estranged daughter and ex-wife while reconstructing his life alongside fellow survivors. Lily Latorre (“Run Rabbit Run”), Meghann Fahy (“The White Lotus”), Kali Reis (“True Detective”) and Amy Madigan (“Field of Dreams”) round out the cast.

Variety’s chief film critic Owen Gleiberman praised the performance of O’Connor, a 34-year-old British actor best known for “The Crown” and “Challengers.” In his review, Gleiberman wrote, “He’s an authentic presence, scraggly and taciturn in a soulful way, and he communicates the quiet anguish at the heart of Dusty, a character who has lost everything.

Josh O’Connor Sundance Drama ‘Rebuilding’ Lands at Bleecker Street
Image
The Josh O’Connor drama that premiered out of this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Rebuilding, has landed at Bleecker Street for the U.S.

Max Walker-Silverman directs the film, which also stars Lily Latorre, Meghann Fahy, Kali Reis and Amy Madigan. Walker-Silverman worked with Bleecker on his last movie, A Love Song.

In Rebuilding, O’Connor stars as a rancher who loses his ranch in a wildfire and moves into a Fema camp, where he reconnects with her daughter, ex-wife and his larger community.

“Upending clichés about rugged individualism, Rebuilding looks toward a communal vision of courageousness and reinvention, a way to move forward without negating the past — especially when the remnants of that past have been reduced to ash,” reads The Hollywood Reporter’s review out of Sundance, where the film received near-universal praise.

Jesse Hope, Dan Janvey and Paul Mezey produced the film. Executive Producers include Jan McAdoo,...

Spirit Awards 2025 Nominations: ‘Anora’ and ‘I Saw the TV Glow’ Lead Film Categories, ‘Shogun’ Rules TV
Image
“Anora,” the free-wheeling tale of a sex worker who becomes entangled with the family of a Russian oligarch, and “I Saw the TV Glow,” a horror film about two teenagers whose obsession with a show causes them to lose grip on reality, dominated the 2025 Independent Spirit Awards nominations on Wednesday, picking up six nods apiece. Both movies are up for best feature, competing against the body horror film, “The Substance,” as well as “Nickel Boys” and “Sing Sing,” dramas that deal with different aspects of the criminal justice system.

This year the Spirit Awards Film nominating committees said the movies it considered ranged in budget from $112,000 to $28 million. Those budgetary caps don’t apply to the shows that the Spirits recognized, such as “Shōgun,” a lavish historical epic that topped all series with five nominations, including one for best new scripted series. To be eligible, TV shows only have to...

Spirit Awards Best Feature Nominees Include ‘Anora’, ‘I Saw The TV Glow’, ‘Nickel Boys’, ‘Sing Sing’ & ‘The Substance’
Image
The 40th edition of the Film Independent Spirit Awards unveiled nominations this morning, nominating Neon’s Cannes Palme d’Or winner Anora, A24’s I Saw the TV Glow, Amazon MGM Studios’ Nickel Boys, A24’s Sing Sing and Mubi’s Demi Moore body-swap horror movie The Substance for Best Feature.

Anora and I Saw the TV Glow equally lead all noms with six apiece. The Sean Baker-directed Anora landed Best Feature, Best Lead Performance (Mikey Madison), two Best Supporting Performance noms (Yuri Borisov and Karren Karagulian), Best Director, and the Producers Award.

I Saw the TV Glow, which made its world premiere at Sundance earlier this year, is quite the shocker, busting into the Best Feature category as it arguably hasn’t been on the lips of any awards prognosticator this year. Judge Approves Diamond Sports' NBA and NHL Deals, but MLB Demands Speedy Resolution
Image
MLB reportedly asked for the NBA and NHL deals to be unsealed as it expresses concern for several teams under contract with Diamond in 2025.

Diamond Sports Group took another step in the tortured process of trying to emerge from bankruptcy in recent days. The broadcaster agreed to new deals for the 2024-25 season with the NBA and NHL in late August, and this week multiple reports confirm that those deals have been ratified by Judge Christopher Lopez, who has overseen the bankruptcy case since Diamond first entered Chapter 11 protections in March 2023. But Major League Baseball is unsatisfied with those deals, arguing that it is facing yet another offseason of uncertainty thanks to Diamond and threatening to potentially make trouble for the broadcaster as it tries to win approval for its bankruptcy reorganization plan.

Key Details: The NBA and NHL deals include a provision that states Diamond must emerge from bankruptcy...

George Clooney Knows Why He Wasn't Asked To Reprise Batman In The Flash
Image
When you star in a film as disastrous as Joel Schumacher's 1997 fiasco "Batman & Robin," you've got to have a sense of humor about the whole ordeal ... that is, if you survive it. George Clooney, who was the fourth and final Caped Crusader of the phase launched by Tim Burton's "Batman" in 1989, did ultimately make his mark as a movie star in Steven Soderbergh's "Out of Sight" and David O. Russell's "Three King," which has allowed him to self-deprecatingly boast over the last few decades that he was the man who killed the franchise.

The truth of the matter is that Warner Bros. did the series in by rushing the film into production after the success of 1995's "Batman Forever." Schumacher, who'd just completed "A Time to Kill," lacked the time to develop a serviceable story with screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, so they basically made the film up as they went along.

Los Angeles Magazine in Turmoil: Top Editor Fired as New Owners Take Charge
Image
Maer Roshan is out at Los Angeles magazine.

The editor-in-chief has been ousted after more than four years in the job, during which time he steered a major rebrand of the publication through buzzy, high-impact cover stories and features while expanding the title’s social media footprint.

Roshan’s exit comes directly on the heels of massive shifts on the business side. In December, Los Angeles was acquired by power lawyers and business leaders Mark Geragos and Ben Meiselas through their newly launched Engine Vision Media in a deal that also covered Pasadena and Orange Coast magazines. At the time, the pair said they planned to invest in the titles and “provide the resources needed to take them to the next level,” per Geragos.

The deal was welcomed as a shot in the arm by Los Angeles staff, which had been decimated in recent years amid challenges to the media industry.

Kimmel used his opening bit to point out there are 16 first-time acting nominees, including two from Encino Man – Brendan Fraser and Ke Huy Quan.

Kimmel poked fun at Babylon for being a bust at the box office and noted Batgirl is the first superhero to be defeated by an accounting department. He also confirmed James Cameron declined his invitation, joking that you know a show is too long when even Cameron can’t sit through it.

“Some of the critics are saying Jim Cameron isn’t here because he didn’t get a ‘Best Director’ nomination. And, well, I find that very hard to believe about a man of such deep humility. He does have a point. I mean,...

Oscars 2023: ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ Wins Best Picture (Complete Winners List)
Jamie Lee Curtis, Michelle Yeoh, James Hong, Ke Huy Quan, and Stephanie Hsu in Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
It turned out that “Everything Everywhere All at Once” was pretty much everything to every Oscar voter. Of its 11 nominations, it won seven, including the big one: Best Picture. The last Best Picture winner to win that many statuettes was “Gravity” in 2014.

“Eeaao” started off strong when Ke Huy Quan won Best Supporting Actor. Then Jamie Lee Curtis nabbed Best Supporting Actress and, later in the evening, the Daniels took home Best Original Screenplay. By the time it won Film Editing, the seemingly unstoppable breakout hit‘s momentum was undeniable. It then went on to triumph in Best Director, Best Actress and finally, Best Picture.

Much of the evening went according to Steve Pond‘s predictions in his final analysis of the race. “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” won Best Animated Feature, the first award of the night, and “Navalny” won Best Documentary. During his acceptance speech, “Navalny” director Daniel Roher...

Chaka Khan Apologizes For Shading Adele, Mariah Carey And More After ‘Rolling Stone’s Greatest Singers List
Image
Chaka Khan is addressing some shade she recently threw toward other iconic singers and apologizing for feeding into the divisive drama between artists.

The legendary singer took to Instagram on Sunday to respond to the backlash she faced following her appearance on Los Angeles magazine’s “The Originals” podcast last week, where she dissed several other artists who were ranked higher than her on Rolling Stone’s “200 Greatest Singers of All Time” list.

“Recently, I was asked about a list of the ‘greatest singers of all time’ and instead of questioning the need for such a list, I was pitted against other artists and I took the bait,” Khan wrote in her post. “As artists, we are unfairly put into ‘boxes’, ‘categories’ or on ‘lists.’ Being an artist or musician is not a competition. It’s a gift, for which I am truly grateful.”

Khan continued, “It was not my...

Chaka Khan Takes Swipe At Mariah Carey & Adele As She Criticizes Rolling Stone’s ‘200 Greatest Singers Of All Time’ List
Image
Chaka Khan isn’t holding back when it comes to voicing her thoughts on that Rolling Stone “200 Greatest Singers Of All Time” list.

The list had everybody talking when it was revealed at the start of 2023, mainly because Celine Dion was left off it altogether.

However, Khan also has a problem with the publication ranking her at No. 29.

The musician ranted in a chat with Andrew Goldman on his “The Originals” podcast for Los Angeles Magazine, “These are blind b***hes! They are blind as a motherf**king bat! They need hearing aids… These must be the children of Helen Keller!” when she learned she was behind her frenemy Mary J. Blige.

She added of Mariah Cary nabbing the No. 5 spot: “That must be payola or some s**t like that.”

Khan then said of Adele coming in at number 22: “Ok, I quit.”

Chaka Khan Slams Rolling Stone’s 200 Greatest Singers of All Time List: “They Need Hearing Aids”
Image
The Weeknd isn’t the only artist who has a bone to pick with Rolling Stone: After the publication granted her the 29th spot on their “200 Greatest Singers of All Time” list, Chaka Khan lashed out at its editors in a recent interview, saying “they need hearing aids.”

Khan opined on the list during her guest appearance on Los Angeles Magazine’s podcast The Originals, but it wasn’t until that moment that she was even aware of the ranking: “I didn’t even know what the hell you were talking about, so obviously this don’t mean a great deal to me,” the “I’m Every Woman” singer told host Andrew Goldman. “These people don’t quantify or validate me in any way.”

But naturally, Khan was curious about the other 199 singers who share her company on the list. Her verdict on Aretha Franklin’s #1 spot? “As she fucking should be.

Chaka Khan lashes out at Adele and Mariah Carey over ‘greatest singers’ list
Image
Chaka Khan has hit out at a number of musicians, including Adele and Mariah Carey, after ranking behind them on a list of the greatest ever singers.

The “I Feel For You” singer was listed in 29th place in Rolling Stone magazine’s new “200 Greatest Singers of All Time” list, which was published at the start of the year.

In a new interview, Khan claimed the magazine’s editors “need hearing aids”, referring to them as “blind b****es”. She said she had not seen the list prior to being shown it during the interview.

Speaking to Andrew Goldman’s The Originals podcast for Los Angeles Magazine, Khan was asked about Carey placing at number five.

“That must be payola or some s*** like that,” she joked.

Adele, meanwhile, ranked seven spots ahead of Khan, at number 22, prompting Khan to throw her hands up and say, “Ok, I quit.”

2023 Oscars: Best Animated Feature Predictions
Image
This marks the sixth year that the entire membership of the academy can take part in the nomination stage of the Animated Feature Oscar race. Previously, only select members of the Short Films and Feature Animation Branch and invited members from the other branches could serve on the committee that decided the nominees. Collectively, the committee tended to favor traditional and stop-motion films over CG fare. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscars Best Animated Feature predictions.)

Mandatory attendance at screenings has been dropped and voters who want to be on the nominations committee need only attest to having seen all the contenders at theaters or screenings or by way of the the academy’s streaming site.

The method of determining the nominees has also changed. Gone is the system where voters scored a film from 6 (poor) to 10 (excellent) with only those movies meriting an average mark of at least 7.5 eligible for a nomination.

Now the Oscar race can really begin. It was followed by Netflix’s “All Quiet on the Western Front” and Searchlight’s “The Banshees of Inisherin” with nine apiece. Warner Bros.’ “Elvis” picked up eight nods and Universal’s “The Fabelmans” took seven.

‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ Leads 2023 BAFTA Film Nominations With 14 Nods
Felix Kammerer in À l'Ouest, rien de nouveau (2022)
Seen as the main precursor to what you might expect on Oscar nomination morning, the nominations for the 2023 Ee BAFTA Film Awards have been announced, and Netflix’s “All Quiet on the Western Front” gained even more steam as a major awards threat, with an impressive 14 nominations in total. The movie equals Ang Lee’s 2001 “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” as the film not the English language with the most nominations in BAFTA’s history.

Other films that had a strong showing in overall noms include “The Banshees of Insiherin” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (10 each), “Elvis” (9 noms), and “Tar” (5 noms), but possibly the most surprising inclusion was that both leads of the acclaimed indie “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande” — Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack — scored leading actress and actor nods, respectively.

Among notable snubs are the absence of stateside favorites “The Fabelmans” and “Top Gun: Maverick” in the best film,...

New York Film Critics Awards Predictions: Will Tom Cruise and ‘Tár’ Kick Off Their Oscar Runs?
Image
The first phase of the awards season will be fully underway starting in the Big Apple. Beginning with the Gotham Awards where “Everything Everywhere All at Once” triumphed, the New York Film Critics Circle will be the first major group of film journalists to reveal its winners on Friday, Dec. 2.

Members of NYFCC will be voting without seeing James Cameron’s sci-fi spectacle “Avatar: The Way of Water” and Marc Forster’s Tom Hanks-starrer “A Man Called Otto.” The first screening for Kasi Lemmons’ Whitney Houston biopic “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” with Naomi Ackie took place on Wednesday evening, but it’s unclear how many of the members, if any, attended. Reactions to the film are also under embargo for several weeks.

Disasterpeace Crafts “A Pretty Fun Romp” Of A Score For A24’s ‘Marcel The Shell With Shoes On’ – Hear An Exclusive Track
Image
Exclusive: Deadline has an exclusive track from Disasterpeace’s score for the anticipated stop-motion comedy Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, which is set for digital release via Lakeshore Records tomorrow, as A24 releases the pic in North America. (A vinyl edition of the soundtrack is also forthcoming.)

The film centers on Marcel (Jenny Slate), an adorable one-inch-tall shell who ekes out a colorful existence with his grandmother Connie (Isabella Rossellini) and their pet lint, Alan. It’s based on Dean Fleischer-Camp and Slate’s viral stop-motion shorts of the same name, which have garnered more than 50 million YouTube views since their 2010 debut, also spurring the creation of two New York Times bestselling children’s books.

With his vivid yet measured score for the Marcel film, Disasterpeace looked to reflect the distinctively matter-of-fact yet wholly endearing qualities of the character that has gained millions of fans since its introduction. “The...

‘Marcel the Shell With Shoes On’ finally gets full trailer, release date following Telluride 2021 debut
Image
A24 is most notable for their filmography in the horror genre (i.e. “Midsommar” and “Hereditary”), but their latest feature aims to be more lighthearted than almost anything they’ve set their sights on previously.

On Tuesday, A24 released the first teaser trailer for Dean Fleischer-Camp’s “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On,” a live-action/animated comedy film from a screenplay by Jenny Slate and Nick Paley, based on a story the three of them created with Elisabeth Holm back in 2010.

Slate reprises her voice role as the titular Marcel, an anthropomorphic shell living with his grandmother Connie. Joining Slate in the cast are Rosa Salazar, Thomas Mann, and Isabella Rossellini.

The film premiered at the Telluride Film Festival on September 3, 2021. It is produced by Fleischer-Camp, Slate, Terry Leonard, Holm, Andrew Goldman, Caroline Kaplan, and Paul Mezey.

“Marcel the Shell with Shoes On” is scheduled to be released by A...

‘After Yang’ AI Drama From A24, Plus ‘Huda’s Salon’, ‘Great Freedom’ & ‘Dear Mr. Brody’ At The Arthouse – Specialty Preview
Image
A4 presents Kagonada’s second feature After Yang in limited release, the latest in the distributor’s varied indie slate ahead of wide-release horror slasher X on 3/18 and sci-fi adventure Everything Everywhere All At Once on 3/25 — which is also opening SXSW Film Festival.

This is a weekend where The Batman casts a long shadow, but the specialty market is also hungry for new content with moviegoers demonstrably, measurably, more willing to return to theaters in person.

A24 has been a strong voice in the pandemic-scarred cinema landscape. Green Knight, Zola and C’mon, C’mon helped juice the indie box office last year as odd Icelandic horror film Lamb and porno-themed Red Rocket became culty favorites. Other releases included The Humans, The Souvenir: Part II and Saint Maude. The distributor took three Oscar noms with Apple TV+ for The Tragedy of Macbeth. X as well as A24’s upcoming Bodies Bodies Bodies...
