Warning: Spoilers for The Amazing Spider-Man Gang War: First Strike #1!

Introduced sixty-one years ago, Spider-Man has always struggled to maintain a social life – but after all that time, it seems as though the issue extends beyond Peter Parker's superhero career, and has become a core part of his character, one that Marvel should consider putting a rest to, in order to let the enduring character move forward.

Shining (1980)
9 Awesome Commercials Inspired By 'The Shining'!
Shining (1980)
There is no perhaps no movie that has been spoofed, homaged, parodied and referenced more times over the years than Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. A movie that is absolutely chock full of iconic and memorable imagery, from the creepy twins in the hallway to Jack’s total destruction of the bathroom door, The Shining has pretty much become the go-to horror movie to reference, and countless movies and TV shows over the years have done just that.

It’s also pretty common for commercials to reference Kubrick’s masterpiece, and that’s what we’re here to talk about today. Let’s take a look at a handful of the best!

Premier Inn

A seemingly innocent commercial for British hotel chain Premier Inn, this first one played up the idea that a stay in a hotel inferior to theirs could result in a restless...

GetUp! Australia’s gay marriage ad to run in Us for elections push
Julian Shaw in GetUp!'s 'It's time' gay marriage ad

GetUp! Australia’s popular pro-gay marriage ad is to air in the Us to back the American marriage equality movement ahead of elections in November.

‘It’s time’, a same-sex love story that ends in a marriage proposal, first launched in Australia in November last year in the run-up to the Labor Party national conference.

An edited version of the ad is being used by a non-profit named after GetUp!’s film, It’s Time Marriage Equality, which is trying to raise Us$100,000 (Au$96,000) to fund airings across the country.

The group, which has legal consent from GetUp! to use the film, has partnered with fundraising platform Social Teeth and media buying group Aegis to get the ad on primetime TV. Networks including ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox, CNN and Fox News have been targeted. So far, enough money has...

War Cry
Julian Shaw
To many people, the love of their favourite sporting team is sublimated only by their love of their family. The piercing trill of a referee's whistle kicks off the highlight of their week (or month, or year), and the events of a competitive weekend tussle can quickly define and influence their mental state for a big slab of time. Nowhere is this more pronounced than in New Zealand, where the entire nation rises as one, or crumbles in a collective heap, depending on the form of their mighty national rugby union team, The All Blacks. It's fascinating grist for the documentary mill, and on the eve of The 2011 Rugby World Cup, Australian-based Kiwi and All Blacks tragic Julian Shaw has put his home nation - and his family - under the microscope.

Rugby fans need no introduction to John Kirwan. A former All Blacks player, he was one of the most devastating rugby wingers New Zealand - and indeed the world - had ever seen. Nobody knew, however, that the highly revered athlete was battling depression at the height of his career.   This is the subject of All Blacks Don't Cry, a film created by the BFI winning Julian Shaw who teamed up with Kirwan - his "childhood hero" - to create a powerful drama which he hopes will raise awareness about depression. His film will be released online during October which is also Depression Awareness Month.
