Althea Luce was born Alethea Hartman in Crawfordsville. Parents were David W. Hartman and Julia Wade Hartman, Soon after her mother's death in 1871, Alethea and her brother Ferris were adopted by Ananias and Sarah Wade Luse. Sarah was Julia's sister. As part of the adoption agreement, Althea's name was changed to Althea H Luse. The name Althea Luce was adopted as her professional name. She was briefly married to Sidney Farrington Underwood, and together they had a daughter, Edith.
