It was recently reported that Final Destination: Bloodlines star Brec Bassinger signed on to star in the film. Alexander Garcia will be directing from his own script, with principal photography set to begin in Louisiana next month. Bassinger will be joined in the cast by Elena Kampouris (Children of the Corn), Dylan Walsh (Superman & Lois), Marissa Reyes (Ganymede), Evan Ross (The Loneliest Boy in the World), Tony Pierce (The Bodyguard), and Teri Polo (the Meet the Parents franchise).

Exclusive: Brec Bassinger, who is starring in the upcoming sixth Final Destination movie, is leading The Evilry, a supernatural coming-of-age thriller.

Elena Kampouris (My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3) has boarded alongside Bassinger, with the pair joining Dylan Walsh, Marissa Reyes (Ganymede), Evan Ross (The Loneliest Boy in the World), Tony Pierce (The Bodyguard) and Teri Polo (the Meet the Parents franchise).

The plot is being kept under wraps but is centered on a visiting relative, played by Kampouris, who is harboring a dark secret.

Bassinger is also starring in next year’s Final Destination: Bloodlines along with suspense thriller The Man in the White Van.

The Evilry is directed by Alexander Garcia from his own script. Garcia is producing under his Multi-Valence Productions banner with his producing partners Joanna Quezada, Mike Nease, and Chris Bradds. Anne Stimac, Fabian Alomar, David Bertolino, and Jason Baker are also producing.

Exclusive: Vertical has secured North American rights to the mystery comedy Susie Searches which premiered at TIFF 2022. Based on her 2020 short film of the same name, Sophie Kargman makes her feature film directorial debut and shares story credit alongside the film’s writer William Day Frank. It stars Kiersey Clemons (Dope), Alex Wolff (Hereditary), Jim Gaffigan (Chappaquiddick), Ken Marino (Wanderlust), and Rachel Sennott (Bodies Bodies Bodies).

The film is slated for a day-and-date release later this year. Fortitude International will be launching international sales on the title at this week’s EFM.

The film follows Susie (Clemons), an awkward college student with a failing true-crime podcast, who seizes the opportunity to boost her campus and online popularity by solving the mysterious disappearance of Jesse (Wolff), the campus heart-throb. With her star on the rise, events take a dark turn as Susie digs out the truth and soon finds herself in over her head.

Horror — and horror-adjacent films — have a big "it was all in their head!" problem. To be fair, this isn't a new trend — the 1920 silent classic "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" uses this idea with now-iconic results. But I feel like more and more filmmakers are leaning back on this when they attempt to make a genre pic. I don't mean to say they're all making movies where everything is a hallucination, but it seems more often than not that when a filmmaker wants to give us something scary or disturbing, they simply shoe-horn in a dream and/or fantasy sequence and call it a day. And it really feels lazy.

Mercedes Bryce Morgan's "Fixation" takes this to the extreme, dropping us into a story where nothing can be trusted. Is it all a dream? A nightmare? A very elaborate show? You'll have to watch to find out — but will...

Susie Wallis (Kiersey Clemons) has never met a mystery she couldn’t solve. At least not when it comes to those that populate the crime books her mother (Jammie Patton’s Anne) read to her as a child. It got to the point where she wondered if they should stop reading them altogether, but Susie refused. She didn’t care that she always guessed the culprit. All she cared about was spending time with Mom. So when Anne’s Ms diagnosis advanced enough to take away her speech, Susie took over reading duties to keep the tradition alive. And she even took things one step further by choosing to make her mother’s wish come true: using her knack for literary detective work to do good in the world and become famous.

Unlike her college’s quasi-celebrity Jessie (Alex Wolff), however, you can’t just post something online and become an overnight sensation.

What did Dora (Maddie Hasson) do all those years ago? That’s the question she’s asking herself as she sits straightjacketed in a hospital she doesn’t remember entering. What did her family do to her to earn that ire? That’s the question her doctors (Genesis Rodriguez’s Dr. Melanie and Stephen McHattie’s Dr. Clark) hope to answer for her through an invasively experimental psychiatric evaluation. While the two questions ultimately go together considering her actions were a response to that abuse, separating them should always be undertaken with extreme delicacy. Dora’s overall wellbeing should remain paramount regardless of how effective the therapy could prove by pushing the envelope beyond its limits since clarity can sometimes hurt as much as it can heal. Unless, of course, something else is going on.

Streaming service Shudder has acquired the rights to Australian horror-comedy film “Sissy” ahead of its premiere at SXSW in the Midnighters section on Friday.

“Sissy” tells the story of young friends Cecilia (Aisha Dee) and Emma (Barlow), who were inseparable until Alex (Emily De Margheriti) showed up. After Emma and Cecilia run into each other 12 years later, Emma invites Cecilia for weekend at a secluded cabin in the mountains, where Alex turns Cecilia’s weekend into a living nightmare. Exclusive: Alex Wolff has signed on to star opposite the previously announced Kiersey Clemons in Sophie Kargman’s thriller, Susie Searches.

Kargman’s feature directorial debut is based on her 2020 short of the same name, in which she starred alongside Delon de Metz, Sam Lerner, Gabriel Notarangelo and Alison Rich. The darkly comic thriller follows Susie (Clemons), an awkward college student who seizes the opportunity to bolster her popularity—and her overlooked true-crime podcast—by solving the disappearance of a classmate. But as her investigation proceeds, we realize that the truth and Susie aren’t at all what they seem.

Wolff will play Jesse, the charismatic college kid whose disappearance sparks Susie’s investigation. While Jesse has become a campus celebrity thanks to his positivity-themed social media platform, it turns out his private life is much more complicated than his online persona suggests.

Exclusive: Amazon Studios has won rights to adapt QCode sci-fi podcast series, From Now, as a TV series. Golden Globe winners Richard Madden (Game Of Thrones) and Brian Cox (Succession) will serve as executive producers.

The podcast series, which stars Cox and Madden, debuted in late December 2020 and peaked at number two overall in the Apple Podcast charts.

Madden and Cox play identical twin brothers separated by time. The story chronicles the aftermath of their historic reunion when astronaut Edward Fitz’s (Madden) spacecraft suddenly reappears in Earth’s orbit after having gone missing 35 years earlier — and Edward emerges looking the exact same age as when he left.

The podcast was created by Rhys Wakefield, who starred in season three of HBO’s True Detective and William Day Frank, who produced the 2019 comedy thriller Berserk, directed by Wakefield. The duo will adapt the series for TV.

The social media satire heralds from producers Lisa Shaunessy of Arcadia (2067), John De Margheriti of Dems Entertainment (Ladies In Black) and X-Men franchise co-producer Jason Taylor of Freedom Films. Taylor and Arcadia recently teamed on sci-fi 2067, starring Kodi-Smit McPhee and Ryan Kwanten.

Hasson stars as Dora, a young woman at the center of an unusual murder trial. Exclusive: Former Creative Circle COO and Co-Founder Dennis Masel’s new film production company Camera Ready Pictures will kick off their launch with their first feature The Giant which will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. Based in New York City and Los Angeles, Camera Ready Pictures has set its second feature Hell House which will start principal photography in October. Both films are character-driven arthouse thrillers which go in line with the company’s vision of boundary-pushing cinema.

Kate Bosworth will play Sharon Tate for Michael Polish in the drama Tate, which Myriad Pictures is introducing to Cannes buyers this week.

Samuel Goldwyn Films has picked up North American rights to Mickey Keating’s horror film Psychopaths.

The distributor plans to release the latest horror film from Glass Eye Pix in theatres, on demand, and across digital platforms in January 2018.

Psychopaths debuted in Tribeca and tells the interwoven stories of five serial killers who converge over the course of one night. Ashley Bell stars with James Landry Hebert, Mark Kassen, Angela Trimbur, Ivana Shein, Jeremy Gardner, Sam Zimmerman, and Glass Eye Pix founder Larry Fessenden.

Keating wrote and directed Psychopaths, which follows several serial killers over the course of a single night.

Jenn Wexler produced alongside William Day Frank, Keating, and Cam McLellan and Al Lewison for Bad Camal. Fessenden serves as executive producer for Glass Eye Pix.

Keating’s most recent film Carnage Park premiered in Park City in January and is sold internationally by Content Media. The film-maker’s credits include Ritual, Pod, and Darling.

The distributor has picked up North American rights to Mickey Keating’s SXSW Midnight thriller.

Vertical co-president Rich Goldberg plans to release Pod theatrically and digitally day-and-date in autumn.

The film stars Dean Cates and Lauren Ashley Carter as estranged siblings who travel to their isolated family lake house in Maine hold an intervention on their troubled war veteran brother. Brian Morvant also stars.

Morgan White, Sean Fowler, William Day Frank and Keating produced, while Ryan W Keating and Lauren Conoscenti served as executive producers.

Last week Justin Lin was hired to direct a sci-fi comedy Subdivision, and already he's ready to branch out in the same genre. The Fast Five director has been selected to helm Hibernation, a new sci-fi thriller. THR has the story and adds that the film is based on an original script written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Will Frank. Neither of the writers have any previous credits. At this time there aren't any plot details available, but the trade says that Lin will also produce through his Perfect Storm Entertainment label, as will Film 360. Speaking about the project with the trade, producer Troy Craig Poon said, "The story is fresh, inventive and one we found immensely compelling." Lin is currently in the middle of directing Fast Six, his fourth film in the long-running racing franchise, but even once he is finished he still has a full slate of upcoming projects.

Fast Five director Justin Lin is attached to direct yet another movie called Hibernation, a sci-fi thriller written by newcomers Geneva Robertson and Will Frank.

There aren't many details on the plot surrounding the movie, but producer Troy Craig Poon describes it as a dynamic futuristic thriller, saying that the "story is fresh, inventive and one we found immensely compelling."

Lin is currently working on Fast Six. He's also set to direct a sci-fi comedy called Subdivision, a movie about the L.A. Riots, a film called Lone Wolf and Cub, and an adaptation of the David Henry Hwang Broadway play Chinglish. So the director is packing on the film projects to keep himself busy.

Lin seems like a solid director with a wide range. He's not only directed the Fast and Furious films, but he's also directed Better Luck Tomorrow, Annapolis and a few episodes of Community. Only time will...
