Petra Maria Mede was born in Stockholm on March 7, 1970, and grew up in Gothenburg. She is a dancer, actress, comedian and television presenter, and is fluent in Swedish, English, Spanish, French and Italian.

In 2008 she appeared in all 24 episodes of Morgonsoffan (2008), before going on to host Melodifestivalen 2009 (2009), where the Swedish entry for the Eurovision: Moscou 2009 (2009) was chosen. That same year Petra was voted Sweden's best female comedian.

She hosted the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013 in Malmö, Sweden, becoming the first solo presenter in almost 20 years after Mary Kennedy hosted the event solo in Dublin back in 1995. Her performance, which saw her perform an interval act during the Grand Final, received critical acclaim by TV critics and journalists around Europe. She regained the prestigious assignment to lead the Eurovision Song Contest once again in 2016 in Stockholm.

On 31 March 2015, along with Graham Norton, she hosted the Eurovision's Greatest Hits EBU/BBC 60th anniversary concert show, Eurovision's Greatest Hits (2015), at the Eventim Apollo, in Hammersmith, London. The program was broadcast in 27 countries. She again co-hosted Melodifestivalen 2016 (2016) at the Scandinavium in Gothenburg in 2016 and went on to co-host 61e Concours de l'Eurovision (2016) the same year alongside Måns Zelmerlöw.

In 2017 Petra took on the role of Katja in Notre grande famille (2017), a drama series exploring the complexities of relationships in modern family life.

Petra gave birth to her first child, a daughter named Adeline Günther, in December 2012 at age 42. The father is doctor Mattias Günther. Although the couple have now separated, they remain close friends.
