PBS SoCal (Koce/Kcet) led the 2025 L.A. Area Emmy awards with eight total, but the other big winner of the night was Telemundo’s Kvea-tv, which took home all three station awards for best newscasts — for daily morning (4 a.m. to 11 a.m.), daily daytime (11 a.m. to 7 p.m.) and daily evening (7 p.m. to 12 a.m.).

The 2025 Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards were held Saturday at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, hosted by Spectrum News 1 host/anchor Kelvin Washington.

Jim Hill was recognized with 2025 Los Angeles Area Emmy Governors Award, for his five-decades-long career in broadcasting and 45 years as a sportscaster at Kcbs/Kcal in Los Angeles. The award was presented by former LA Laker star James Worthy.

As public media is facing big federal funding cuts, the local PBS station, PBS SoCal, led the list of winners at the 77th Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards, handed out June 26 during a ceremony at the Skirball Cultural Center hosted by Spectrum News 1 anchor Kelvin Washington.

PBS SoCal landed 8 Emmys, followed by Kmex-tv and Kvea (7 each), ABC7 and KTLA5 (3), Spectrum News 1 and Spectrum SportsNet LA (2) as well as Los Angeles Times, NBC4 and USC Football (1).

Kvea swept all three Regularly Scheduled Newscast categories, while coverage of the Franklin fire by ABC7 was recognized for live coverage of an unscheduled news event. KTLA5’s annual Rose Parade telecast took the Live Special Events – Programming trophy.

Kcbs/Kcal sportscaster Jim Hill was the recipient of the 2025 Los Angeles Area Emmy Governors Award.

Gary Oldman is clearly having a ball playing the gruff, ill-mannered and often underestimated Jackson Lamb in the Emmy-winning Apple TV+ spy thriller Slow Horses.

"We often laugh actually, while we're doing it. We crack up and then and do retakes," he tells Gold Derby. "It's been an extraordinary show to work on, not only because the material is very good and obviously the character is just a dream. But it's been really made all the more special because of the people working on the show. And that is really across the board from makeup, costume, Dp, camera operator, clapper loader, although they're not really clapper loaders anymore," he says. "I love regrouping after a break and then getting back and seeing everyone. The set is very easy to work on in that respect. Just an incredible bunch of people and that really has made it, I think, one of the highlights of my career.

The Television Academy revealed the nominations for the 77th Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards, recognizing 111 nominees across 31 categories that spotlight the best in locally produced television, from arts and culture to crime, environment and public affairs.

The awards will be presented Saturday, July 26, at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles. The ceremony will be hosted by Kelvin Washington, anchor and host for Spectrum News 1.

Back in 2019, it was announced that Ben Wheatley would be writing, directing, and executive producing Generation Z, a “hilarious, frightening, and political” series that would consist of six hour-long episodes that would “mix flesh-eating zombies into a story that satirizes how Brexit has divided the UK.” That project didn’t make it into production when it was originally supposed to because of the pandemic shutdown… but after making Meg 2: The Trench (you can read our review at This Link and check out our interview with the filmmaker Here), Wheatley circled back around to Generation Z. Fans are rediscovering two underrated Guy Ritchie action movies on Prime Video. 2021's Wrath of Man, starring Jason Statham, and Henry Cavill's The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, which debuted last year, have found success on the streaming platform.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare and Wrath of Man are currently on Prime Video's Top 10 most-watched movie list for January 12. Per FlixPatrol, the Ritchie films occupy the ninth and tenth spots, respectively. Movies in the Top 5 are Culpa Tuya, Dwayne Johnson's Christmas movie Red One, Culpa Mia, Knox Goes Away, and The Idea of You. Statham, who had a stellar 2024 with the successful release and positive reception of The Beekeeper, has a second movie higher up Prime Video's list. His 2023 sequel movie Meg 2: The Trench is sixth on the list, with Upgraded and Classified rounding out the platform's top eight films.

Slow Horses season 6 gets a new update from Gary Oldman ahead of the release of season 5. Based on the books by Mick Herron, the hit Apple TV+ show premiered in 2022, quickly becoming one of the most acclaimed original titles from the streamer. Season 4 debuted in September of last year, following Oldman's Jackson Lamb, Jack Lowden's River Cartwright, and the rest of Slough House as they work to take down Hugo Weaving's Frank Harkness, and Slow Horses season 5 is expected to release this year, with season 6 also confirmed.

Who doesn't enjoy watching a good actor absolutely chew through the scenery as a big baddie? That's at least part of the appeal of Hugo Weaving's diabolically evil character in Slow Horses. The acclaimed Australian actor first showed up in the Apple TV+ series in season four and changed the game for the at-times dysfunctional MI5 agents and it looks like his character, Frank Harkness, is going to return in the already-confirmed fifth season of the Gary Oldman-starring series.

While speaking at the International Film Festival of India in Goa, according to Variety, Weaving confirmed that Harkness will be back, explaining that he will head to London in January for a two and a half month shoot. When it first hit FX, practically everyone was under the impression that The Old Man was going to be a one-and-done prestige limited series. By the end of those first seven episodes, however, it had become clear that The Old Man was packing enough espionage chills and thrills to sustain at least one more season, if not a number of them. Whether it will eventually live up to the sterling reputation of some of the best CIA and spy-based television series remains to be seen.

Fans are waiting for the fifth season of Slow Horses on Apple TV+, but some good news has been revealed about the show's future after the upcoming season.

Per Apple TV+, Slow Horses has officially been renewed for Season 6. The sixth season will be based on Joe Country and Slough House, the sixth and seventh novels from Mick Herron's Slough Horse novel series that inspired the show. The renewal comes days after Season 4 wrapped up earlier this month, and it's very early, as Season 5 is not expected to arrive until sometime in 2025. Even so, the news is not a major shocker, as the series is as acclaimed as ever following Season 4 earning a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Prime Video subscribers will be able to watch Apple TV+ on Prime Video channels later in October. Apple and Amazon recently made a deal, per The Hollywood Reporter, that will enable the Apple TV+ service to be viewed through Prime, similar to other streaming services like Max, Paramount+, AMC+ and Starz.

Prime Video subscribers can add on the Apple TV+ subscription for an additional $9.99 per month, enabling viewers to watch all its content in the Prime Video app. The deal was announced by Mike Hopkins, senior vice president, Prime Video and Amazon Studios at the Bloomberg Screentime Conference on Oct. 9.

Slow Horses star Jack Lowden opens up about the twist involving his character, River Cartwright, at the end of the season 4 premiere. Going back to the Slow Horses season 3 finale, which offered a preview of the episodes to come, it was teased that a member of Slough House would be killed. But that information somewhat clashed with a scene of Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman), the Slough House boss, who seemed indifferent to the news. It turns out that is because Lamb quickly suspects that River Cartwright faked his own death.

In an interview with Radio Times Maganize, Lowden opens up about River's fate inSlow Horses season 4 which is based on the Mick Herron novels. The actor, nominated for an Emmy for his role in the Apple TV+ spy dramedy, praises the storyline and indicates his own surprise at River's potential death.

One of KTLA5’s two Emmys went to the station’s veteran Ktla entertainment reporter Sam Rubin, who died of a heart attack in May. He was recognized for his news coverage of the SAG-AFTRA strike.

Three stations split the honors for Regularly Scheduled Newscast in the different day parts: Spectrum News 1 (morning), Kcal (Daytime) and Kvea (evening).

Unfortunately for her, there’s something inside the station that some very bad people want to get their hands on, and she’s in the way. Survival thriller Jericho Ridge is opening in UK cinemas on Thursday, and it’s going to deliver some serious action.

In March, when it screened at the Glasgow Film Festival, I met up with director Will Gilbey and star Chris Reilly to discuss it, but we all knew from the start that it would be a challenging interview. As revealed Tuesday morning, the highly-anticipated next chapter of the Gary Oldman drama will now premiere on Wednesday, November 29, 2023.

It was previously revealed that new episodes would air beginning December 1, 2023, so we're getting them two days earlier.

Apple TV+ has been experimenting with rolling out shows earlier in the week, and it worked very well for Ted Lasso Season 3, so we're inclined to believe this will be a good thing for this hit drama series.

Apple TV+ released the preview on Tuesday for the British spy show, which returns with the first two episodes of Season 3 on Nov. 29. A new episode premieres every Wednesday through Dec. 27.
