She's In Portland - Jennie Kermode - 16244
Marc Carlini
At first glance, Marc Carlini's indie drama doesn't look too much, but misleading appearances are part of what it's concerned with. It follows longtime friends Wes (Tommy Dewey) and Luke (François Arnaud), two thirtysomething guys who are dissatisfied with their lives for different reasons, as they travel along the California coast together on a quest to visit another old friend, Maggie (Nicole Laliberte), in Portland. Years ago, Luke had a crush on Maggie and Wes is convinced that there was real magic between them, especially after meeting Maggie again at a party where she asks after him. He's convinced that the two meeting again could be the trigger Luke needs to get out of a rut and do something with his life. But it's apparent from that first party scene that not everything is rosy in Wes' life either, and the desire to get away for a while may be.

‘Twin Peaks’: David Lynch Sends a Bizarre Message to Comic-Con Fans and Rejects Kyle MacLachlan’s Emmy Snub
David Lynch
“Twin Peaks” may have ended its revival last year, but the world that David Lynch and Mark Frost created continues to live on. Such is the case with all properties with cult followings, and it may have been what inspired the Comic-Con panel Saturday night titled “Twin Peaks and the Revival of a Cult Classic.”

Taking place at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel’s Indigo Ballroom, the panel featured a fan-favorite lineup including executive producer Sabrina Sutherland, stars Kimmy Robertson (Lucy Brennan), Harry Goaz (Deputy Andy Brennan), Chrysta Bell (FBI Agent Tammy Preston), Robert Broski (Woodsman), John Pirruccello (Deputy Chad Broxford), Eric Edelstein (Det. “Smiley” Fusco), Nicole Laliberte (Darya), George Griffith (Ray Monroe), Amy Shiels (Candie), and Adele Rene (Lieutenant Cynthia Knox).

Sutherland revealed that Lynch had texted her, “I got my days mixed up and I’m going to be there yesterday if not sooner. It’s slippery in here.

"Twin Peaks," Episode 8 Recap: Did You Like That Song?
Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series."Did you like that song?" the boy (Xolo Mariduena) asks the girl (Tikaeni Faircrest). His words are hesitant and tentative—tinged with naiveté, therefore open and earnest. "Yes," the girl replies, playing along with the courtship ritual. "I did like that song." Yet there's a sense in the slight pause between his question and her answer that she could say anything. That awkward dead space is filled with possibilities—positive, negative and in-between. And what excitement there is in that. This exchange comes toward the end of Part 8 of Mark Frost and David Lynch's revived Twin Peaks, though the quiet beauty of the moment is offset by the many horrors (and wonders) that precede it…and that, will indeed, follow it. It's easy...

"Twin Peaks," Episode 5 Recap: I Love How You Love Me
Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. The key image in Part 5 of the revived Twin Peaks is of a woman in ecstasy. Recall, however, the subtitle that series co-creator/director David Lynch appended to his thorny 2006 masterpiece Inland Empire: "A Woman in Trouble." The line separating rapture and anguish is a blurry one, especially for Lynch's ladies, who are as likely to end up exquisitely chiseled corpses (the ubiquitous Laura Palmer; Part 2's doomed henchwoman Darya) as they are world-weary survivors. For the moment, let's focus on Rebecca "Becky" Burnett (Amanda Seyfried), daughter of Rr Diner waitress Shelly Johnson (Mädchen Amick), though Becky's last name—taken from ne'er-do-well husband Steven Burnett (Caleb Landry Jones)—obscures the identity of her father. (Dana Ashbrook's now-law-abiding Bobby Briggs is the most likely candidate,...

"Twin Peaks," Episodes 3 & 4 Recap: Hell-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o!
Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. What's an FBI Special Agent to do after being locked away for 25 years in unearthly purgatory? Episodes three and four of Mark Frost and David Lynch's revived Twin Peaks, which aired on Showtime this past Sunday in a two-hour block (aside from September's two-part finale, it's all single, hour-long episodes from hereon out), follow our besuited, Black Lodge-incarcerated hero Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) as he reintegrates into modern terrestrial society. So this is basically Peaks doing Rectify, just with a sterile death row replaced by an infernal hellscape out of Clive Barker. Or David Lynch, really. What's becoming more and more evident as the new Peaks progresses is that the series is, in large part, a repository for Lynch's subconscious, past and present.

Mystères à Twin Peaks (1990)
'Twin Peaks' Revival Delves Deeper Into 'Fire Walk With Me' -- and It's Absolutely Insane (Hi Naomi Watts!)
Mystères à Twin Peaks (1990)
Woo boy, Twin Peaks fans.

If you thought the first two hours of the Twin Peaks revival were weird, you haven't really seen anything yet.

Let's start with what is easily the David Lynch-iest sequence of the show so far.

The Purple Spaceship

After being expelled from the Black Lodge and taking a quick pit stop in the glass box in New York City, real Agent Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) finds himself in a weird purple spaceship thing with a woman who is listed in the credits as Naido (Nae Yuuki). Her eyes are melted shut, which lends some weight to the idea that eyes are important in Twin Peaks -- Ruth Davenport (Mary Stofle) was missing an eye and it also appeared that Evil Cooper (MacLachlan) shot Phyllis Hastings (Cornelia Guest) through the eye.

The woman eventually disappears and Cooper encounters the shadowy head of Major Garland Briggs (Don S. Davis), who utters the phrase "blue rose...

"Twin Peaks," Episodes 1 & 2 Recap: Do Not Drop Up
Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. The world's gone mad. Fortunately for FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan), he's been able to sit out most of the real-life insanity of the last 25 years. Unfortunately—as surely known by those viewers familiar with Mark Frost and David Lynch's singular television series Twin Peaks, which returned Sunday, May 21st for a limited, 18-episode run on Showtime—that's because he's been trapped in the unearthly purgatory known as the Black Lodge, all while his devilish doppelgänger, a mortal manifestation of the murderous spirit known as Killer Bob, runs amok among mankind.Already it feels like I'm speaking in tongues. But if Twin Peaks and Lynch (who directed, co-wrote, co-edited, and designed the sound for all of these new episodes) have taught us anything,...

Mystères à Twin Peaks (1990)
'Twin Peaks' Returns as Confusing and Terrifying as Ever -- Here's What Happened in the Premiere!
Mystères à Twin Peaks (1990)
Warning: Spoilers ahead if you haven't seen Sunday's two-hour Twin Peaks premiere.

Twin Peaks returned to TV on Sunday after 27 years and it was every bit as scary, twisted and confusing as the original -- though we expected nothing less from David Lynch.

In the two-hour premiere, there were two distinct threads happening: one with the show's original characters and one featuring new faces and new mysteries. They eventually intersected, but for much of the first hour it was a lot of introducing seemingly unrelated things, most of which were happening outside the titular small Washington town.

Big Names On "Twin Peaks" Cast List Of 217
The new "Twin Peaks" isn't slated to debut on Showtime until 2017, but a flurry of speculation about it happened last week with a tweet from Go For Locations indicating that filming had wrapped on the "first two seasons" of the series.

The episode count for the David Lynch-directed series was always in question, but that tweet suggested we'd be getting even more episodes than originally planned. Said tweet has since been deleted, so we'll have to wait to see how that pans out.

in the meantime in more official news, Showtime, Lynch and Mark Frost has released the official cast list for the new series with a whopping 217 names across the various episodes - a list that includes some real surprise big name inclusions such as Monica Bellucci, Michael Cera, Naomi Watts, Tim Roth, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Eddie Vedder, Ashley Judd, Ernie Hudson, Jim Belushi, Richard Chamberlain, Laura Dern,...

‘Girls Against Boys’ DVD Review
Stars: Danielle Panabaker, Nicole Laliberte, Liam Aiken, Michael Stahl-David, Andrew Howard | Written and Directed by Austin Chick

Ah, the rape-revenge movie. A bastion of the horror movies since the 70s, the genre has seen some great, and some not so great films fall under the banner of “rape-revenge” including such greats as the female-led I Spit on Your Grave and Savage Streets. Now comes Girls Against Boys, which picks up the mantel from those films and runs it straight into dullsville.

The film tells the story of Shae (Panabaker), a college student all set to spend the weekend in the Hamptons with her much-older lover. However just before their trip he calls off the relationship and reveals he has a wife and kid which sends Shae into a state of shock and depression. But she still has to go to work right? Right. Spending some quality time sobbing in the...

Exclusive: Adam Gierasch Talks Fractured
You’ve got to love the fact that the press junket for Adam Gierasch’s latest extreme horror film was held in a bar – in the middle of the day. (Not only was press allowed to imbibe, the open tab certainly was encouraging of vice.)

As the jukebox played and the fermented juices flowed, I sat down with Gierasch and company to ask a few questions about Fractured (formerly, Schism).

The movie’s main male stars – Callum Blue and Vinnie Jones – were not able to attend the event, but that’s okay... we had the lovely and talented actresses, Nicole Laliberte and Ashlynn Yennie, to chat up.

Laliberte plays wild sex kitten Marlena, while Yennie takes on the tamer (though no less-clothed) character of Brandy. It’s interesting to think that maybe the roles would have been reversed. “I got the script and there were two female characters. One was...

Don't be deceived by the cover art for Fractured and its "Vinnie Jones is out to get everyone in an effort to rescue a family member" nature. It's the latest film from director Adam Gierasch (working from a script he penned with Jace Anderson) and it stars Vinnie Jones, Callum Blue, Ashlynn Yennie and Nicole Laliberte.

Girls Against Boys Review
Man, I just can’t help but think a huge opportunity was wasted with Austin Chick’s Girls Against Boys. With a title like that, and a synopsis that includes the phrase “deadly way of dealing with the opposite sex,” I thought I’d be in for some sexy genre fun about pissed off women who go around murdering misogynistic men for shits and giggles. Maybe some pulp story uniting women against the plight that is the male gender, making us feel inadequate against two feminist icons punishing the wicked? Unfortunately that wasn’t my luck though, as I would have taken anything instead of the movie Chick delivered.

Girls Against Boys is as dull and soulless of a genre movie that you’re going to find in 2013, really existing as a perfect storm of thrown away potential. From the extremely weak story to lifelessly unlikable characters, Chick’s idea...

FEARnet Movie Review: 'Girls Against Boys'
Girls Against Boys (2012)
I'm always impressed when male filmmakers use the horror genre to say something interesting about women. Obviously we need more female writers, producers, and directors (a lot more) in the horror genre, but at least we can enjoy it when creative men step up and represent the female gender in frank and honest fashion. Filmmakers like Lucky McKee (May, The Woman), Paul Solet (Grace), Mitch Lichtenstein (Teeth), Pascal Laugier (Martyrs), Neil Marshall (The Descent), Richard Bates (Excision) and several others are plainly interested in how women can function within the realm of horror as heroines, anti-heroines, victims, and victimizers, which makes each new discovery sort of exciting.

Add Austin Chick's low-key but coolly fascinating Girls Against Boys to the list of indie horror films, written and directed by men, that aspire to give young women something new to do in horror films. Veteran of the indie circuit -- he...

Exclusive: Liam Aiken Talks Girls Against Boys, More
Liam Aiken
Liam Aiken made his screen debut playing Parker Posey’s son at age seven in 1997′s “Henry Fool,” and then kept working as a kid, in movies like “Stepmom,” “Sweet November,” “Road to Perdition” and “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events.” Transitioning to young adulthood, he’s dabbled in music, but kept working in movies, like Michael Winterbottom’s “The Killer Inside Me.” His latest film is writer-director Austin Chick’s “Girls Against Boys,” in which Aiken portrays Tyler, a guileless college student whose burgeoning relationship with the troubled Shae (Danielle Panabaker) upsets the balance of the latter’s relationship with the even more troubled Lu (Nicole Laliberte). For ShockYa, Brent Simon recently had a chance to speak to Aiken one-on-one, [ Read More ]

Danielle Panabaker Talks 'Girls Against Boys'
Girls Against Boys (2012)
Horror has been good to Danielle Panabaker. At only 25-years-old, the bubbly actress has already appeared in 2009’s Friday the 13th, The Crazies remake, Piranha 3Dd and The Ward. Now, there’s Girls Against Boys.

Opening in New York and Los Angeles theaters on February 1st, the Austin Chick -directed movie follows college student Shae (Panabaker) as she is terrorized by several men over the course of a few days. Pushed over the edge, Shae teams up with co-worker Lu (Nicole Laliberte) for a gruesome killing spree against her attackers and any other male unlucky enough to cross their path. But not everything is as it seems and Shae must wrestle with her personal demons to break free of Lu’s seductive control. Panabaker spoke exclusively to me by phone about Shae, exacting revenge and her dream horror role.

What impressed you about the script for Girls Against Boys?

Just wait until you catch “Girls Against Boys.” Guy or girl, you’ll never want to attempt a date again. When Terry opts to do the right thing and try to work things out with his wife, Shae’s crushed and sulks her way through her shift bartending at a trendy nightclub. [ Read More ]

Girls Against Boys (2012)
'Girls Against Boys' director Austin Chick talks about his shocking (yet surprisingly mom-friendly) revenge thriller
Girls Against Boys (2012)
In the new revenge thriller Girls Against Boys, two twentysomething New Yorkers, played by Danielle Panabaker (The Ward, Piranha 3Dd) and Nicole Laliberte, go on a very gruesome killing spree when Panabaker’s character is attacked following a night of clubbing. In short, you might think the result would not be your mother’s cup of Earl Grey — but you would be wrong.

“The reaction that’s been somewhat surprising is that women, especially middle-aged women, seem to like it a lot more than they expect to,” says the film’s writer-director Austin Chick (Xx/Xy, August). “A lot of...

Girls Against Boys Movie Review
Girls Against Boys (2012)
Title: Girls Against Boys Director: Austin Chick Starring: Danielle Panabaker, Nicole Laliberte, Liam Aiken, Michael Stahl-David, Andrew Howard, Matthew Rauch A wan, overly precious and self-satisfied psychological thriller that tries to toe the line between gender statement and ambiguity, “Girls Against Boys” is a kind of junior thrill-kill revenge flick that doesn’t touch the same high points of any of its many inspirations or antecedents. While it eschews overheated sensationalism in a manner that rather belies its most forthright plot synopsis, the movie doesn’t engage in the necessary heavy intellectual lifting to blossom into anything special. Shae (Danielle Panabaker) is a naïve college student who, after getting dumped by her older married lover (Andrew [ Read More ]

Exclusive: Danielle Panabaker On Girls Against Boys, and Why She’s Done With Captain Crunch
Danielle Panabaker
Danielle Panabaker is no stranger to big-screen gnarliness, having co-starred in horror fare like “Friday the 13th,” “The Ward,” ”The Crazies” and even “Piranha 3Dd,” in all its goofy, gory glory. In her new film, though, writer-director Austin Chick’s “Girls Against Boys,” Panabaker is on several occasions the one wielding weapons rather than being terrorized. She stars as Shae, a naïve college student who, after getting dumped by her married older lover (Andrew Howard) and victimized by a scuzzy guy (Michael Stahl-David) she meets on the rebound at a party, gets drawn into a twisted plan for revenge by her coworker Lu (Nicole Laliberte). Together, the two embark upon a gruesome killing spree. For ShockYa, Brent Simon had a chance to speak [ Read More ]
