Reading books is the only way to gain the knowledge and power to navigate the world’s most complex challenges. International Relations has become a crucial field because of the rising need for cordial relationships between countries as the world becomes more interconnected. There have been more collaborations between countries in an attempt to promote peace and economic prosperity. War and rising tensions have also developed in certain regions increasing the need for mitigating efforts. This can only be done by reading extensively.

What was most striking was the silence.

Much of the coverage on CNN and MSNBC starting at 10:00pm Et Wednesday when it became clear Russia was launching a full-scale invasion of Ukraine was of city squares and skylines from the besieged nation, where little appeared to be happening. The most a viewer watching in real time might witness was the slow creep of daylight into the sky above the Independence Monument in Kyiv’s Maidan Square. The gunfire and shelling CNN’s Matthew Chance and MSNBC’s Erin McLaughlin said they heard — prompting them both to dramatically don flak jackets and helmets, the war correspondent version of weatherpeople leaning into high winds while covering a hurricane — was barely glimpsed. And yet the global order was changing.

“Shock and awe” this was not. It was something much more sinister, and U.S. cable news was ill-equipped to cover it.

On “The Late Show” Wednesday, Stephen Colbert used his monologue to discuss the uncertain situation between Russia and Ukraine. Or, more specifically, he spent a few minutes roasting cable news channels for endless, breathless, time-filling coverage that doesn’t actually inform anyone of anything. We laughed more than once.

By now you know that tensions between Russia and Ukraine — well, mainly from Russia at Ukraine — have worsened in recent weeks, and plenty of national security commentator types worry Russia might invade. And just today, Russia claims it is withdrawing troops from the border with Ukraine, while American authorities say that might not be true. The three news networks carried tribute ceremonies on Wednesday for Brian Sicknick, the police officer killed in the siege on the Capitol last month.

CNN, MSNBC and Fox News carried the congressional tribute to Sicknick, who lay in honor at the Rotunda, followed by the departure of his remains from the Capitol.

But when it came to coverage Tuesday evening’s ceremonies for Sicknick, Fox News carried only parts live while sticking to its lineup of opinion hosts, Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham.

That drew attention on Twitter. As CNN and MSNBC stuck to live coverage of the arrival ceremony of Sicknick’s remains, Fox News was on to other topics. On The Ingraham Angle, that included coverage of the pandemic, including a segment with Dr. Scott Atlas, Donald Trump’s former coronavirus adviser, criticizing Dr. Anthony Fauci. Earlier on Hannity were segments on a woman ejected from a Lakers game for heckling LeBron James.

Rather than celebrate President Trump’s birthday on Sunday, many Twitter users used the day to honor President Obama with the hashtag “All Birthdays Matter.”

Several phrases began trending on Twitter early on Sunday, including “Obama Day June 14th,” “Obama Appreciation Day,” “Obama Day USA” and “Happy Birthday Obama,” in addition to “All Birthdays Matter.”

Some celebrities and politicians joined the trend, including George Takei, Ken Jeong, Billy Baldwin and others.

“I’d say happy birthday to Donald on his special day, but after all, #AllBirthdaysMatter,” Takei wrote. Later, he added “Oh, how you are missed, Mr. President. What do you miss most about Barack Obama, friends? #ObamaDayJune14,” along with a video of the former president.

NBC’s “Meet the Press” is focusing on “alternative facts” Sunday just days after moderator Chuck Todd became a trending Twitter topic for a recent interview in which he admitted he was initially “naive” about the campaign of “disinformation” he said has come from the Trump administration and top Republicans.

The show’s team is splitting the hour up into sections: “Politics and Journalism in an Era of ‘Alternative Facts'” with New York Times executive editor Dean Baquet and the Washington Post executive editor Martin Baron; “Anatomy of a Lie” with NBC News national security analyst Clint Watts; and “Borrowing the Russian Disinformation Playbook” with New Yorker staff writer Masha Gessen and former U.S. ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul.

When President Trump’s Treasury Department proposed lifting sanctions on companies tied to the Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska in December Secretary Steven Mnuchin vowed that the firms would be forced to “significantly diminish Deripaska’s ownership and sever his control.”

But, the New York Times is now reporting that Treasury’s promises were illusory: “The deal contains provisions that free [Deripaska] from hundreds of millions of dollars in debt while leaving him and his allies with majority ownership of his most important company.”

The film, which bowed day-and-date on August 31 via Super Ltd, is about what allegedly was the most successful espionage operation in Russian history. Bryan claims to expose a 30-year history of covert political warfare devised by the ex-Kgb chief to disrupt and ultimately control world events. Featuring exclusive interviews with Hillary Clinton, John McCain, Michael McFaul and others, Active Measures follows a trail of money, real estate, mob connections and on-the-record confessions to expose an insidious plot that leads directly back to the White House.

Super Ltd has acquired Jack Bryan’s documentary “Active Measures,” which details the decades-long connection between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, and set an Aug. 31 release.

The film, which premiered in April at the Hot Docs festival in Toronto, includes reporting on Trump’s alleged dealings with Russian mob figures, and analysis on Russia’s meddling in the 2016 Us Presidential Election.

The release will be day and date with exclusive theatrical engagements in New York and Los Angeles and on digital platforms.

Bryan alleges in the the film that Putin has engaged for 30 years in covert political warfare devised to disrupt, influence, and ultimately control world events through cyber attacks, propaganda campaigns, and corruption. He asserts that the trail of money, real estate, mob connections, and on the record confessions lead directly back to the White House.

According to Russia expert and Trump advisor Fiona Hill, this innocuous-sounding bit of “Kgb jargon,” as she described it in her book, Mr. Putin: Operative in the Kremlin, offers valuable insight into Putin and his leadership of Russia. “Working with people” [rabotat’ s lyud’mi] was a hallmark of the Soviet spy agency under Yuri Andropov, who ran the Kgb for much of Putin’s 16-year career there.
