‘The Judd Family: Truth Be Told’ director on exploring country music icons, generational trauma, and healing
Image
"When I first talked to Ashley Judd, this idea of generational trauma came up, and that was the first thing I dug into. I thought, 'This is really interesting,'" Alexandra Dean, director of Lifetime's The Judd Family: Truth Be Told, tells Gold Derby. "It's my belief that, as a society, we understand trauma very little."

That insight became the foundation of the four-part docuseries that premiered May 10 on Lifetime. The series provides an intimate and unflinching portrait of one of country music's most iconic families, delving far beyond their legendary musical legacy to confront the interwoven complexities of family, fame, and inherited trauma.

Naomi Judd's suicide in 2022 sent shockwaves through the world of country music, but for her daughters — award-winning singer Wynonna Judd and actress Ashley Judd — the tragedy was shattering. Through raw and candid interviews, they, along with Naomi's husband Larry Strickland and close family friends,...

Image
The truth is out there, and David Duchovny is going to find it. The actor, filmmaker and podcaster is now moving into documentary series — hosting and producing new History Channel series Secrets Declassified.

Now this 10-part project, one of a dizzying number of programming announcements at Wednesday’s A+E Global Media upfront, isn’t specifically described as a real-life X-Files. But let’s call them like we see them. The show promises to reveal the latest evidence behind “the government’s most secretive, strange and mind-blowing activities that have been declassified throughout history.”

“I’ve always been drawn to explorations of the more complicated aspects of our lives, leaning into conversations that dig below the surface and unlock a more interesting story,” Duchovny said in a statement. “I’m thrilled to be executive producing and hosting a new History Channel series that’s not afraid to go there. ‘Casey Anthony: Where the Truth Lies’ Director Pushes Back Against Critics and Resistance to Believing Child Abuse Claims
Image
When Alexandra Dean signed on to direct “Casey Anthony: Where the Truth Lies” for Peacock, she had high hopes that the series would help people understand the Casey Anthony murder case, which Time magazine previously dubbed the social media trial of the century, in a new light.

Anthony, now 36, was found not guilty of murdering her two-year-old daughter Caylee during a 2011 trial that captivated the country. Anthony was charged with her daughter’s murder in 2008.

“My biggest hope for the series is that it provokes really profound conversations around how people like Casey are portrayed by the media,” Dean told Variety. “I hope it makes people think more critically about where they’re getting their information. If it’s from an outlet that covers a court case from one side and doesn’t want to hear from anyone not on their side, then they don’t have the full story.

Casey Anthony Sits Down For First Interview In New Docu Series
Image
Casey Anthony is telling her side of the story in a new documentary, Casey Anthony: Where the Truth Lies, that will air on Peacock November 29.

This will be the first time since the 2008 disappearance of her daughter, Caylee Anthony, that Casey will sit down for an interview. She did not even testify during the 2011 trial where she was found not guilty of first-degree murder after six weeks of proceedings.

Casey was found guilty, however, of four misdemeanor counts for providing false information to investigators and ultimately served prison time.

“I lied,” Casey said in the documentary’s official trailer. “But no one asked why.”

Casey is rumored to place the blame for Caylee’s death on her father, saying he staged her drowning and covered up the death because he might have been abusing the 2-year-old girl.

In 2017, the judge who presided over Casey’s trial told Hln Casey probably killed her daughter by accident.

Casey Anthony Speaks On-Camera For the First Time in "Where the Truth Lies" Trailer
Image

Since she was accused of murdering her daughter in 2011, Casey Anthony has remained a tabloid-cover staple for more than a decade. Now she's speaking out and telling her side of the story in a Peacock documentary titled "Casey Anthony: Where the Truth Lies." On Nov. 15, the official trailer was released, and in it, Anthony speaks her first on-camera sentence: "Why did I wait 31 days to call 911?"

Anthony's 2-year-old daughter Caylee was reported missing by her grandmother on July 15, 2008, and was later found dead in the woods near their family home, per The New York Times. Photos of her partying in the weeks following Caylee's death emerged, and she was soon charged with murder, manslaughter, and child abuse. However, her defense team later argued that Caylee had drowned in a pool and Casey had failed to report her death for fear of a murder charge, and Anthony was found not guilty.

Hugh Hefner Investigative Docuseries ‘Secrets of Playboy’ Gets More Episodes at A&e
Image
A&e is expanding its documentary series “Secrets of Playboy” with two additional episodes that will delve further into Hugh Hefner and his legacy through conversations with women who have never spoken up before.

“Secrets of Playboy” examines Hefner’s Playboy empire, unearthing allegations of coercion, sexual assault, drugging and manipulation from various women over decades. Since its premiere this past January, it has become A&e’s most-watched series launch in more than five years.

“Secrets of Playboy” airs Monday nights. The two new hourlong episodes will begin airing on March 28 and won’t be documentary style, like the current 10-episode series has been formatted. Instead, they will present new conservations, hosted by investigative journalist and former Playboy model Lisa Guerrero.

The new episodes will explore “The Girls Next Door” chapter of Hefner’s reign, taking a look into the E! series that aired in the 2000’s and revolved around Hefner’s younger girlfriends,...

Secrets of Playboy (2022)
Hugh Hefner Shtupped a Dog and Maybe Killed His Secretary – If You Believe A&e’s Doc Series | Commentary
Secrets of Playboy (2022)
The most shocking disclosure in “Secrets of Playboy,” the 10-part documentary that began airing on A&e on January 24, has nothing to do with its accusations of cocaine-snorting at the mansion or of Playmates being coerced into orgies. In Hugh Hefner’s world, that’s what you call Tuesday.

No, the single most revealing moment so far in the series is a few seconds of old footage in which the late Playboy editor and publisher is caught on camera experiencing a flash of self-awareness so blinding in its clarity it practically sets off a lens flare. “My life itself is just an invention,” he says, chuckling at his own candor. “It’s all just a very clever marketing ploy. And it just happened to work out very well for me.”

Oh, it worked out, all right. More than a marketing ploy, Hefner invented an entire mythology around himself that not...

Drugs, Threats & Coercion: Why Hugh Hefner’s Playboy Empire Is Being Re-Examined After #MeToo
Image
Hugh Hefner was revolutionary. Praised for his part in the sexual revolution of the 1960s, the Playboy founder was ahead of his time as an early proponent of gay rights, abortion and birth control. He was progressive with inclusion at his company when racism was rampant.

But, according to a new docuseries, Hefner was also a monster — one who would drug women, coerce them into sex, secretly record them in the bedroom and use his power and connections to blacklist and silence them into fear.

A&e’s 10-part “Secrets of Playboy,” which is airing Monday nights and had the network’s biggest premiere since Leah Remini’s Scientology series in 2016, re-examines Hefner and his Playboy Enterprises through the lens of 2022.

“I think that Hef had two sides to him and they were radically different,” says the doc’s director Alexandra Dean, who also directed Paris Hilton’s YouTube Originals documentary,...

Image
A+E Network is releasing Secrets of Playboy in early 2022, a documentary about the hidden truths behind the Playboy empire viewed through a modern lens produced by Industrial Media’s The Intellectual Property Corporation.

“The fantasy world of Playboy has been shrouded in secrecy for decades and we are proud to lift the veil on these long-hidden stories,” said Elaine Frontain Bryant, Executive Vice President and Head of Programming for A&e in a statement. “Breaking down barriers and exposing the truth, Secrets of Playboy is a masterful example of brave storytelling that takes an unflinching look at the personal effects of Hugh Hefner’s empire, while also exploring his legacy’s larger influence on our society and modern-day views of sexuality.”

The Real World: An Influx Of Confessional-Style Projects Forms A New Frontier In Documentaries

For the famous women at the heart of some of the year’s most compelling documentaries, there are no secrets. They reveal intimate details of past trauma and personal struggles with startling transparency.

“That was one thing that I was very good at,” Demi Lovato confides directly to camera in her docuseries Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil. “Hiding the fact that I was addicted to crack and heroin.”

Revelations from Lovato cascade throughout the four-part YouTube Originals series: dealing with bulimia and other eating disorders, mental health issues, her evolving sense of her sexuality, and, shockingly, being raped by her drug dealer.

“The hardest thing to talk about for me was the sexual assault. That was something that I had never shared with the world before,” Lovato says. “The world knew that I had overdosed—they didn’t know on what… But when it came to the third episode,...

The Remaking of Paris Hilton
Image
There are two different Paris Hiltons: the Gen Y Paris Hilton, and the Gen Z Paris Hilton. For Gen Y, the Hilton burnished in our minds is someone who is “famous for being famous,” a sloe-eyed, coltish heiress who does little more than pose for paparazzi photos and drunkenly stumble out of Bungalow 8. For those born after 1995, however, Paris Hilton is an icon, a prototype for the self-made businesswoman (her branded products, including a line of fragrances, are worth billions of dollars); a fashion icon whose early-aughts aesthetic — slinky chainmail dresses,...

Paris Hilton Aims to Redefine Her Brand by Sharing Childhood Trauma in ‘This Is Paris’ Documentary
Image
Paris Hilton is known as a business mogul, a reality TV star and has been dubbed the “original influencer.” But how much of the persona is the “real Paris?” And where did this filtered, curated and celebutante image come from? Those are the questions her YouTube Originals documentary “This Is Paris” hopes to answer, peeling back the layers to reveal how Hilton created the character the world thinks they know.

“I feel that I’ve grown up so much, especially in the past year,” Hilton tells Variety in an interview conducted over Zoom. “Doing this film, I just had so many realizations and realized who I truly am and why I am the way I am.”

In the documentary, which is now streaming on YouTube, Hilton details her rise to fame and her childhood trauma, alleging that she was physically and emotionally abused while at attending boarding school. It’s...

‘This Is Paris’ Exposes Paris Hilton’s Trauma But Can’t Crack Her Personality: TV Review
Image
Paris Hilton has been in the “due for a re-evaluation” stage of her career for far longer than she was evaluated in the first place.

In 2008, a documentary about Hilton, entitled “Paris, Not France,” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival; in it, Hilton, one of several women whose time in the limelight in the 2000s descended into an acrimonious war waged by and on the media, attempted to explain why she’d been treated unfairly. In 2020, Hilton — much more firmly established as a professional DJ and seemingly generally well-liked public personality — does the same thing in “This Is Paris,” a YouTube Originals-produced doc directed by Alexandra Dean.

Dean, director of the Hedy Lamarr documentary “Bombshell,” knows her way around an icon who’s somewhat receded from view. Cannily, she inserts interview footage with Kim Kardashian West — the onetime Hilton protege whose greater hunger for fame led her to leapfrog,...

‘Hedy Lamarr’: Gal Gadot-Led Limited Series to Premiere on Apple TV+
Image
After being in development at Showtime for more than two years, the Gal Gadot-led “Hedy Lamarr” has instead moved to Apple TV+, with the tech giant giving the project an eight episode limited series order.

The show will be executive produced by Gadot (“Wonder Woman”) who will also star, and Sarah Treem (“House of Cards”). A release date has not been determined.

Here’s the series’ synopsis, per Apple: Hailed as “the most beautiful woman in the world,” Hedy Lamarr was first exalted and iconized, then destroyed and eventually forgotten by American audiences, all the while keeping her brilliant mind active through a series of inventions, one of which became the basis for the spread spectrum technology we use today. The series will follow the incredible life-story of Hollywood glamour girl, spanning 30 years from Hedy’s daring escape from pre-war Vienna; to her meteoric rise in the Golden...

Gal Gadot-Led ‘Hedy Lamarr’ Series From Sarah Treem Moves To Apple From Showtime
Image
Hedy Lamarr, the Gal Gadot-led eight-episode limited series from The Affair co-creator Sarah Treem, The Handmaid’s Tale producer Warren Littlefield and Endeavor Content, has moved to Apple from Showtime with a straight-to-series order.

The project had been in development at Showtime since August but never received a series order. Per Apple, the series will follow the incredible life-story of the Hollywood glamour girl, played by Gadot, spanning 30 years from Hedy’s daring escape from pre-war Vienna to her meteoric rise in the Golden Age of Hollywood to her fall and eventual disgrace at the dawn of the Cold War. An epic tale of an immigrant woman both ahead of her time and very much victim to it.

2020 Apple TV Pilots & Series Orders

The notion for the historical drama originated from Gadot and her husband and producing partner Jaron Varsano (My Dearest Fidel), who then partnered with Littlefield and Treem, the...

Gal Gadot-Led Hedy Lamarr Series Moves From Showtime to Apple
Gal Gadot
Gal Gadot’s Hedy Lamarr series is moving from Showtime over to Apple, which gave it a straight-to-series order.

The eight-episode limited series will be written and executive produced by Sarah Treem and Gadot, along with “Handmaid’s Tale” producer Warren Littlefield and Gadot’s husband and producing partner, Jaron Varsano. The project hails from Endeavor Content.

Lamarr was born in Austria and went on to become one of the most famous silver screen stars of the ’40s. She also had an unsung side-gig as an inventor, working alongside composer George Antheil early in World War II on a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes that is now considered an important precursor to bluetooth and wifi technology.

Gal Gadot, Sarah Treem’s Hedy Lamarr Series Moves to Apple From Showtime (Exclusive)
Image
The Gal Gadot-led series about film legend Hedy Lamarr is on the move. Variety has learned exclusively that the project is now set up at Apple with a straight-to-series order after having previously been in the works at Showtime.

The eight-episode series hails from writer and executive producer Sarah Treem, who previously served as co-creator and showrunner on Showtime’s “The Affair.” Gadot is attached to star and executive produce. Warren Littlefield and Katie Robbins will also executive produce. Gadot and her husband and producing partner Jaron Varsano will executive produce under their Pilot Wave banner. Adam Haggiag and Alexandra Dean will serve as co-producers, with Hedy Lamarr’s children Anthony Loder and Denise Deluca consulting on the series. Endeavor Content will produce.

According to multiple sources, the decision to move the series to Apple was at least partially the result of the relationship between Treem and Showtime deteriorating...

Paris Hilton
Paris Hilton is opening up a side of herself that the world has never seen before.

The DJ spoke about the misconceptions of her life during a TV Critics Association press tour event on Saturday. While promoting her new YouTube documentary series, This Is Paris, Hilton revealed that she was actually playing a “character” on her breakout reality show, The Simple Life.

“I knew what I was doing but the whole world didn’t, so it was kind of frustrating to me to be perceived in that way because it’s not who I am at all,” she told People at event.

Paris Hilton Promises Her YouTube Documentary Won’t Be ‘The World According to Paris’
Paris Hilton
Paris Hilton has been a public figure for the better part of two decades, but the former reality star and tabloid staple says she’s ready to finally introduce the world to her real self in the YouTube documentary “This Is Paris.”

Hilton is the subject of the upcoming doc, which will grapple with the public perception of her as a world-famous heiress and socialite — a perception she once willingly helped perpetuate — and “uncover the hidden past of the international icon.”

“This is completely different than anything I’ve ever done. This is a real film,” Hilton said at the Television Critics Association press tour on Saturday, promising that “This Is Paris” won’t resemble her short-lived reality series “The World According to Paris” or the ostensible “reality” show that made her a household name, “The Simple Life.”

Paris Hilton Admits She Was “Playing A Character Before” As Heiress Opens Up About YouTube Doc ‘This Is Paris’ – TCA
Paris Hilton
Paris Hilton opens up about her life in YouTube doc This Is Paris – a far cry from the “character” that the hotel heiress has been playing for over 15 years in shows such as The Simple Life.

Hilton was at the Winter TCA press tour to discuss the film and it was a relatively frank conversation, one in which she didn’t use her ‘That’s Hot’ catchphrase once.

She told Deadline that it was an “emotional” and “raw” experience. “I’ve never done anything like this in my life,” she said. “In this film I discuss things I’ve never discussed before. I hope that people are going to see who I truly am.”

“It follows me in my real life, everything I’ve done before was me playing a character. I was talking about things that are very hard to talk about. It was an amazing experience but it was very scary.

David Blaine Sets ‘Death-Defying’ Live Event at YouTube
David Blaine
Illusionist David Blaine will do his next live TV stunt on YouTube, so not really on TV.

The internet-video company announced Saturday during the Television Critics Association press tour that Blaine has partnered with YouTube originals for what the company is calling “an unprecedented live event” this fall. But this time, the twist is that Blaine, known for darker and more mysterious stunts, will do something “lighter and brighter” for YouTube.

While that sounds nice, YouTube promises it will still be “death-defying.” Blaine was on hand Saturday in Pasadena to tease this event, which includes some kind of aerial component.

Blaine’s last TV special, “Beyond Magic,” aired in 2016 on ABC.

Review: “Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story” (2017; Directed by Alexandra Dean); Kino Lorber Blu-ray
“Beauty And Brains”

By Raymond Benson

One of the unsung heroines of the 20th Century—her fame as a Hollywood star notwithstanding—is actress and inventor Hedy Lamarr. Few have known about her extraordinary proclivity to invent stuff, and even less are aware that she came up with a patent during World War II for a communications system that was later adopted and is still used today.

Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story, a wonderful documentary on the woman’s life and career, deliberately emphasizes that Lamarr’s scientific knowledge and technical imagination takes precedence over her Hollywood legacy. And while Lamarr appears to have maintained an upbeat attitude throughout the decades, the motion picture reveals that her struggles were many. Lamarr was troubled, misunderstood, and too many times ignored for her efforts beyond being a “pretty face.”

Pretty she was indeed. Lamarr was one of those Hollywood beauties who turned heads and dropped jaws.

The characters populating Ilian Metev’s 3/4 (read: Three Quarters) often walk and talk in pairs, but they are seldom framed together, the camera lingering on each as the separate halves of a whole that never quite comes into being. They are the three quarters of a family enjoying what is likely to be their last summer together: physics professor Todor (Todor Veltchev) and his two children, adolescent...

‘Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story’ Review: One of Hollywood’s Most Fascinating Lives Gets a Biography to Match
Hedy Lamarr
It’s not that Alexandra Dean’s documentary “Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story” starts off with a montage of individuals attesting to the legendary actress’ on-screen allure. It’s how quickly the film moves past that to a more profound understanding of the woman behind the face. “Bombshell,” which airs this week as part of PBS’ American Masters series, is a biography of a classic film star that doesn’t need to do much to bolster Lamarr’s bona fides as someone who captivated the moviegoing public’s attention.

But even if Lamarr (born Hedwig Kiesler in 1914 Austria) is best known for her roles, she left behind a legacy that extends far beyond her filmography. It’s a testament to both Lamarr’s life and Dean’s crafting of the film that the interview subjects for this doc extend into a variety of fields. There are film historians, family members, friends, and the man who becomes a kind of unofficial narrator of the film, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Richard Rhodes.

Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story (Alexandra Dean)

The tell-all “autobiography” Ecstasy and Me: My Life As A Woman was exactly what Hedy Lamarr’s agent wanted to make quick money. But it wasn’t her life. Whether her ghostwriter’s words were true or not, the story dealt with everything she hoped wouldn’t define her legacy. Sadly she never had the chance to set the record straight with...

Win Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story on DVD
To mark the release of Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story on 23rd April, we’ve been given 3 copies to give away on DVD.

As famous for her performances as she was infamous for her multiple marriages and affairs with the likes of Spencer Tracy and JFK, Hedy Lamarr was enigmatic. There was substance behind the beauty, though; a side to her far more interesting than the spotlight of stardom. She was a maverick, an ingenious inventor whose pioneering work helped revolutionise modern communication. Her groundbreaking concept of frequency hopping is now used as the basis for secure Wi-Fi, Gps and Bluetooth. We have far more than beautifully poised performances to thank her for.

Produced by Academy Award® winning Susan Sarandon, as well as Michael Kantor and Regina Scully, Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story finally gives Hedy the voice denied to her by Hollywood. In 2016, director Alexandra Dean and producer Adam Haggiag...

Bombshell, The Hedy Lamarr Story
The pretty faces that give Hollywood its glamour eventually fade, but Alexandra Hall’s documentary reveals a remarkable woman who parlayed her beauty into an incredible life — from nude scenes in a notorious 1933 Austrian film, to eleven years in Hollywood as MGM’s ‘most beautiful girl in the world’, to a seemingly incompatible achievement: she invented a revolutionary communications technology for the WW2 war effort, and only belatedly received credit for it. A remarkable audio interview with the legendary lady brings a fabulous life into focus.

Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story review – a remarkable double life
By day, a glamorous film star, by night a technology pioneer

It is, as one interviewee says, the ultimate “crime fighter by night” story. By day, Hedy Lamarr was the most glamorous star in Hollywood. By night, she was an inventor whose frequency-hopping technology is now used in bluetooth and wifi. This rousing documentary charts the story of a brilliant woman who was, in some ways, handicapped by her beauty. Film-maker Alexandra Dean explores a fascinating life full of contradictions. Lamarr claimed that the world never saw her true self, yet she lived her final years as a recluse, hidden even from her family. She was an immigrant who gave her all to support her adopted country but who was always regarded as an outsider.
