Splice novelization coming from Claire Donner and Encyclopocalypse Publications
Image
Fourteen years have gone by since director Vincenzo Natali’s sci-fi horror film Splice (watch it Here) reached theatres – and now Fangoria has broken the news that Splice is finally getting the novelization treatment! This novelization has been written by Claire Donner, “New York City and online branch director of the Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies, who has written essays for Severin Films’ releases of Michele Soavi’s Dellamorte Dellamore, The Sect, and The Church“, and is coming our way from Encyclopocalypse Publications, the company that’s also behind such novelizations as Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, Redneck Zombies, Re-Animator, Wishmaster, Fright Night, and more.

Scripted by Natali, Antoinette Terry Bryant, and Doug Taylor, Splice had the following synopsis: Genetic engineers Clive Nicoli and Elsa Kast hope to achieve fame by splicing animal DNA to create hybrids for medical use at the company N.E.R.D. (Nucleic Exchange Research...

Vincenzo Natali’s ‘Splice’ Getting a “Perverse” Official Novelization This Summer
Image
Fans of the 2009 sci-fi/horror movie Splice from director Vincenzo Natali will be happy to hear than an official novelization is on the way, with Fangoria first reporting the news this week.

Based on the screenplay by Natali, Antoinette Terry Bryant, and Doug Taylor, Splice: The Novelization is written by Claire Donner and published by Encyclopocalypse Publications.

Encyclopocalypse previews, “Experience Vincenzo Natali’s Splice like never before in this new official novelization by Claire Donner!”

Vincenzo Natali tweets in praise of the upcoming book this week, “Claire Donner has written a deeply psychological and perverse novelization of Splice. I loved it.”

Donner tells Fangoria, “I did not add anything new to the course of events in Splice, but the film provides so much room to explore psychology and memory that I’d like to think the novelization will feel fresh and provocative for fans. Vincenzo flatters his audience by never saying too much,...

Blu-ray Review: Splice
Blu-ray Rating: 3.5/5

Writers: Vincenzo Natali, Antoinette Terry Bryant, Doug Tayloy

Director: Vicenzo Natali

Cast: Adrien Brody, Sarah Polley

Distributor: Warner Home Video

Mostly ignored when in theaters, Splice is a film that deserves a healthy life on home video. For anyone that has followed director Vincenzo Natali’s career starting with Cube, Splice feels like the movie he has always been working towards. In fact, he first came up with the idea for Splice a decade ago.

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Splice’ Brings Dysfunctional Parenting to a New Level
Chicago – In the opening moments of “Splice,” the audience is experiencing the world through the eyes of a newborn baby. Yet unlike Gaspar Noé’s “Enter the Void,” which recreated human perception with eerie perfection, this point of view shot is blatantly skewed. The doctors seem to be looking at a pulsating fishbowl rather than a baby. That theory is swiftly proven to be fairly accurate.

The newborn is, in fact, not a human, but an animal hybrid created by fearless scientists Clive (Adrien Brody) and Elsa (Sarah Polley). Though they insist that their work aims to cure diseases such as Parkinson’s, they often seem a bit too fond of playing god. And when their bosses at the pharmaceutical company demand to see experiments that yield lucrative results, the two devoted lovers and collaborators decide to conduct their controversial work in private. Their next goal: splicing DNA to form the first-ever human-animal hybrid.

Splice (2010)
Without a doubt, Splice is a film that is likely to divide the public. However, we can all agree that Vincenzo Natali's latest film is rather entertaining and that the cast does a great job.Elsa Kast (Sarah Polley) and Clive Nicoli (Adrien Brody) are two married genetic engineers who work for a pharmaceutical company. Their the task is to develop a medical protein by using a mix of animal genes from various species. In the process, Elsa adds human DNA despite their boss's (David Hewlett) warning against human cloning. As a result of that, a new organism comes to life. Clive wanted to kill that creature, but Elsa convinces him that it's worth keeping that creature alive in order to study it. As she grows quickly, the creature - which will be called Dren by Elsa - becomes a deformed female infant (Abigail Chu).

Afterwards, she ends up...

Splice Review | It's Not What You Think
Splice is not what you think it is. Let's get that out of the way. It's been marketed as a sort of cerebral horror film, and that's not... quite right. It's certainly a way to get people into the theaters, and the commercials, all full of swooping beasties and cries of fear and shock certainly play that up, but really, that's the last 10 minutes or so. Instead, it's a steady, slow-burning exploration of several themes -- of science, genetics, gender roles, family dynamics, sexual dysfunction, and...

Let me back up. By now, it's likely that everyone has seen the numerous trailers for Splice. Personally, I avoided watching any after the first one came up -- once I know I'm going to review a film, I try to absorb as little information as possible. In its simplest sense, the trailers get the general concept right. Directed by Vincenzo Natali (Cube), and written by Natali,...

Splice review
Ron finds more fault with the Splice trailers than the film, discovering an edgy 50s-style sci-fi flick with better monster effects...

I watch a lot of movies, and I watch a lot of movie trailers. Call me crazy ("You're crazy!") but it's a lot of fun to me to see how people, studios, or whoever decide to encapsulate the essence of their 90 minute movie into a couple of fleeting moments. There's nothing I dislike more than a misleading trailer. Your trailer can be bad, but so long as the movie itself is a piece of crap, I'm fine with that. If you stick a bad trailer with a good movie, or a boring trailer with a fun movie (ahem, Jennifer's Body, paging Jennifer's Body), I just get irritated.

Splice, in every trailer I've ever seen for it, is being sold like a classic science-gone-wrong monster movie, in which Dren (played...

Splice (2009)
Directed by: Vincenzo Natali

Written by: Vincenzo Natali, Antoinette Terry Bryant, and Doug Taylor

Cast: Adrien Brody, Sarah Polley, Delphine Chanéac

The hip young scientists of Nucleic Exchange Research and Development (N.E.R.D) have brewed up a warm batch of what-the-fuck. Splice starts up with a birth scene of a ten pound bald worm thing that has been genetically engineered to produce some scientifically important protein that is so important that it's given its own scientific sounding number. Inspired by their success, the two lead scientists and long time lovers, Clive and Elsa, rather spontaneously decide to break a large assortment of legal and ethical laws by creating a new life form on the sly - this time with a bit of human DNA inserted just for fun.

It's not just human DNA that's involved. Like the tubular worm thingers created before it, this new life form also...

Splice Review Directed by: Vincenzo Natali Written by: Vincenzo Natali, Antoinette Terry Bryant and Doug Taylor Starring: Adrien Brody, Sarah Polley, Delphine Chaneac, Brandon McGibbon, Simona Maicanescu In the middle of one of the most generic, braindead summer movie seasons in recent memory, Vincenzo Natali's Splice shines brightly as one of the sole beacons of demented hope among mounds of manufactured studio cattle feed. This creepy and inventive movie probably has no business getting a wide release, much less one in the middle of the summer, but somehow producer Joel Silver felt that it was worth taking a risk on and picked it up for release through Warner Brothers. It probably didn't hurt that Guillermo Del Toro also lent his name to the project as an executive producer, but either way I'm not complaining. If you're a fan of unique genre films with a bit of thought behind them,...

Hollywood Movie Roundup: ‘Killers,’ ‘Splice,’ ‘Marmaduke’

HollywoodNews.com: A soft May could turn into June gloom at the box-office if the pre-”Toy Story” (June 18) releases all fail to break out. Four new movies debut this week, but will all likely fall behind the ogre who looking to three-peat at number one.

Get Him To The Greek

A spinoff of “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” from producer Judd Apatow and director Nicholas Stoller, the raunchy comedy features Russell Brand’s naughty rock star character Aldous Snow being shepherded to L.A.’s famous open-air ampitheare by record company flunky Jonah Hill for a concert. Sean ‘P. Diddy’ Combs, Rose Byrne of “Damages” and “Mad Men’s” Elisabeth Moss co-star along with the usual array of Apatow stock company cameos. Stoller scripted.

Despite the high raunch factor, “Greek” is earning surprisingly good reviews. The sentiments of the Chicago duo of Roger Ebert of the Sun-Times and...

Director: Vincenzo Natali Writers: Vincenzo Natali, Doug Taylor, Antoinette Terry Bryant Starring: Adrien Brody, Sarah Polley, Delphine Chanéac Clive Nicoli (Adrien Brody) and Elsa Kast (Sarah Polley) are rock star scientists with serious god complexes who splice and dice the DNA of various animal species to genetically engineer unique hybrid beings. Their first major success story -- earning them the front cover of Wired -- occurs with the creation of two non-descript slimy blobs named Ginger and Fred. The sugar daddy for Clive and Elsa’s Dr. Frankenstein experiments is Newstead Pharmaceuticals. The towering black skyscrapers (one of countless references to David Cronenberg’s oeuvre) lend the pharma corporation a menacing and mysterious aura -- though they purport to be solely interested in saving humankind from disease, we know that they are only in it for the money. The logical next evolutionary step in Clive and Elsa’s research is...

Adrien Brody, Sarah Polley Are Scientists Creating a ‘Splice’ of Life
Chicago – The science of existence gets trickier everyday, and it doesn’t help when humans start creating their own competition. The new film “Splice,” featuring Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley, explores the current trend of genetic research, while at the same time paging Dr. Frankenstein.

Rating: 3.5/5.0

Adrian Brody is Clive and Sarah Polley is Elsa. They are hot scientists-as-rock-stars, having developed several new animal disease cures through their genetic splicing of different species. The results of the gene weaving are more protoplasmic than discernible animal, but the research yields a big cash outlay from a mega-pharmaceutical corporation, hoping to isolate protein strains that can translate to new drugs.

Elsa becomes restless with the random animal experiments and hopes to expand to the next frontier – the splicing of human genetic material with other species. Unknown to Clive, she uses the lab facilities to begin the process, using her own DNA material in the mixer.

Movie Review: Splice (2010)
Delphine Chaneac and Sarah Polley in Splice

Photo: Warner Bros. Buzz for Vincenzo Natali's genetic sci-fi thriller Splice ramped up after its debut at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. It was snatched up by Warner Bros. and given a meaty summer release date so who wouldn't expect it to be as excellent as the hype was insinuating? At the very least it had to be more than just counter-programming against Universal's Get Him to the Greek... Right?

Sorry, Splice is one-half of an interesting sci-fi feature and one-half of an outlandish winged-creature sex romp. Perhaps the title of the film is more literal than I took it to be, because Splice is cut straight down the middle to the point the first half takes itself way too seriously considering where the second half dares go. Had this been conceived as a tongue-in-cheek B-movie from the outset I could have held on for the duration,...

Interview: Director Vincenzo Natali Dissects His New Film ‘Splice’
Chicago – The universe is sometimes blinded by science, and director Vincenza Natali explores that sightlessness in the upcoming “Splice,” a sci-fi thriller featuring Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley as rogue scientists trying to unlock the mysteries of life with experiments in human and animal gene splicing.

Vincenzo Natali started his career in animation, working as a storyboard artist on several TV cartoons, and occasionally doing storyboarding for movies. His breakthrough came with the Canadian backed film “Cube” in 1997, which was highly regarded and very popular in Japan and France. After three more features, he also got to direct a segment in “Paris, je t’aime” in 2005.

Splice is modern science gone awry, as two experimental scientists (Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley) begin to “splice” the genetic codes between species, adding a secret experiment with human beings.

New 'Splice' clips!
"Splice" has new clips in. The Warner Bros. Pictures' science fiction horror opens on June 4th and stars Adrien Brody, Sarah Polley, David Hewlett, Delphine Chanéac, Abigail Chu, Stephanie Baird, Amanda Brugel and Brandon McGibbon. Vincenzo Natali directs as well as writing the screenplay alongside Antoinette Terry Bryant and Doug Taylor. Clive and Elsa are a pair of brilliant scientists whose cutting-edge experiments in genetic engineering make them superstars in their field. As devoted to their careers as they are to one another, they start conducting unauthorized experiments with new animal species that show great promise. Drunk with their god-like powers, they introduce human DNA into one of their creations, producing a creature that is greater than the sum of its parts: a rapidly developing animal/human hybrid that may be a step up on the evolutionary ladder. While this female creature inspires maternal feelings in Elsa, she evokes something far-from-paternal in Clive.

Splice – 5 Movie Clips and 18 Images
One of the best films I saw at this year’s Sundance Film festival was director Vincenzo Natali’s Splice. Starring Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley as genetic scientists that create a new life form with severe consequences, the film is original, dark, twisted, and it looks like a Hollywood produced film. That’s probably why Joel Silver agreed to distribute Splice through his Dark Castle label (via Warner Bros.) and it’s getting released June 4th. Trust me, the film is absolutely worth seeing.

Anyway, earlier today I did the press day for Splice and in the near future you can expect interviews with the cast and director Vincenzo Natali. Until then…hit the jump to check out five clips from the film and 18 images. I’ve also incvluded the full synopsis:

[Editor's note: I Still haven't seen this so if you have a screener, please get in touch.]

Elsa and Clive (Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley) are rockstar scientists who have made a major breakthrough in genetic modification, one that could potentially revolutionize medicine and cure many of the world's worst diseases. When their superiors squelch any possibility that these breakthroughs will open the door to more controversial experiments (like the splicing of non-human and human dna), Elsa and Clive covertly make their own human/animal hybrid, just to see if it can be done. In the tradition of "Frankenstein" and "The Fly" comes "Splice", the latest feature from Canada's Vincenzo Natali ("Cube", "Cypher"), a tragic, science-gone-awry thriller/creature feature that is headed, against all odds, to theaters all around the country.

I was lucky enough to be part of a special screening for the film here in Austin,...

[Video] Sarah Polley Talks About 'Splice'
In this short video, Canadian actress Sarah Polley talk to cultural reporter Steve Gow about the Canadian film Splice, Vincenzo Natali's next sci-fi film that will be released in theatres in North America on June 4.

The story - which was penned by Vincenzo Natali, Antoinette Terry Bryant and Doug Taylor - follows Elsa (Sarah Polley) and Clive (Adrien Brody), two scientists who wish to conduct an experience bordering on human cloning (something that is illegal). Therefore, they splice together human and animal DNA in order to create a new organism. As a result of that, a creature called Dren is born. This creature came to life as a deformed female infant (Abigail Chu) and it will age quickly to the point of becoming a beautiful but dangerous winged human-chimera (Delphine Chanéac).

First official UK trailer for Splice
Cube (1997) director Vincenzo Natali finally brings us the oft-delayed Sf thriller/horror Splice on August 6th, on which more info after the trailer...

Splice's apparent mixture of science and female sexuality recalls the Species franchise at a glance, but we note the effort made by the VFX team to give Dren eyes that are impossibly wide-apart, Avatar-style.

The film, produced by Guillermo Del Toro, tells the story of two scientists, played by Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley, who the official synopsis describes as 'superstars of the scientific world', and who decide to push genetic manipulation a stage further with the creation of an animal-human hybrid (Delphine Chanéac) that threatens to grow beyond their control and beyond the control of anyone.

Written by Doug Taylor and Antoinette Terry Bryant, Splice was intended as the follow-up to Cube, but technological and budget restrictions at the time put the Sf project on...

Pretty good marketing by the studio for a film that will sure raise some eyebrows for some on the issues it touches on but it seems the “experiment gone wrong” marketing concept is working for the WB right now.

Superstar genetic engineers Clive (Adrien Brody) and Elsa (Sarah Polley) specialize in splicing together DNA from different animals to create incredible new hybrids. Now they...

[News] Second Poster for 'Splice'
Fans of science-fiction films, the second poster of Vincenzo Natali's Splice, a Canadian film, has arrived on the net.

Finally, as the poster suggests it, the film will be released in North America on June 4, 2010.

Sci-fi London 2010: Review of Vincenzo Natali's Splice
Year: 2009

Directors: Vincenzo Natali

Writers: Vincenzo Natali & Antoinette Terry Bryant & Doug Taylor

IMDb: link

Trailer: link

Review by: Ben Austwick

Rating: 9 out of 10

Since seeing a preview clip at last year's London Frightfest I've been pretty excited about Splice. A sequence showing a beautifully animated creature somewhere between cute and scary being chased round a laboratory promised a special effects-laden, action packed and jumpy bit of sci-fi, but there was a niggling feeling that such a stylish-looking film might be a bit lacking in content. Thankfully nothing could be further from the truth - Splice is one of the most rounded and accomplished science fiction movies in years.

Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley play Clive and Elsa, romantically involved geneticists working for Nucleic Exchange Research and Development (Nerd), a company that manufactures genetically modified medicine. The couple are very much the golden boy and girl of the organisation, their protein-manufacturing...

Warner Brothers Releasing Splice on June 4, 2010
Premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Splice, ended up selling to Joel Silver’s Dark Castle label distributed by Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. has already set a June 4, 2010 release date.

This psychological Sci Fi thriller is really twisted and awesome as we know that two young rebellious scientists try to splice together human and animal DNA to create a new organism.

With the modest budget for the film which looks like a Hollywood produced film this is a huge bet by Dark Castle to turn Splice into a Paranormal Activity-like success.

We can expect a trailer to be released very soon but until then don’t miss already released great clip from the Splice

The Sci Fi is directed by Vincenzo Natali, best known for his ventures into the world of science fiction in movies like the cult classic Cube and Cypher.

Vincenzo Natali also wrote the...

Sundance 2010: Review of Splice, Hesher, High School, Boy, and Buried
[Editor's note: Special thanks to our friend Chase over at Gordon and the Whale for the following reviews]

Splice - Written by Rusty Gordon

Rating: 7.5/10

Writers: Vincenzo Natali, Antoinette Terry Bryant & Doug Taylor (screenplay), Vincenzo Natali & Antoinette Terry Bryant (story) Director: Vincenzo Natali Cast: Sarah Polley, Adrien Brody, Delphine Chanéac

It might be cheap to say that if you enjoy David Cronenberg, you should enjoy Splice (using one man’s art to describe another’s). But there are obvious similarities between Splice and a large body of Cronenberg’s work (if you get the pun, I’m glad that you love Cronenberg too). The big one being a body used to create horror. But in this film, the body was never completely human.

Of course, if Splice was just a straight up rip-off of Cronenberg’s films it wouldn’t work because the two would be too similar. However, Splice director Vincenzo Natali is able to have his own fun while giving a respectful nod to master Cronenberg and his other influences.

Sundance Reveals 2010 Non-Competition Slate
On Wednesday the Sundance Film Festival unveiled the films competing in late January 2010. Yesterday they announced the rest of the line-up of independent films vying for attention for industry types and the curious public.

The entire list of 53 films is below, but here are a few that stood out to me from the premieres alone:

Mumblecore directors the Duplass Brothers, have a new, untitled movie starring an unusually high-profile cast compared to their usual improvisational crew. John C. Reilly, Marisa Tomei, Jonah Hill, and Catherine Keener. Reilly and Keener are actually in two films at the 2010 festival.

The Company Men, starring Ben Affleck, Kevin Costner, Maria Bello, Tommy Lee Jones, Chris Cooper, Rosemarie DeWitt about corporate downsizing.

Rodrigo Cortes’ Buried, starring Ryan Reynolds as a man buried alive in a coffin. I’ve read the script and its great. More on that as soon as I can.

The Runaways, the...

Yesterday we got the list for the films playing in competition at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and today we get the rest of the films that will be featured and there are quite a few that make 2010 look much stronger based on pedigree alone than I have seen in quite some time. Variety has a big write-up detailing the categories and more on the festival right here, but I am just going to offer up the titles and let you sort it all out.

The titles already in the RopeofSilicon database are linked.

Premieres

All films are from the United States unless otherwise noted Abel (Mexico-u.S.), the directorial debut of actor Diego Luna, written by Luna and Agusto Mendoza, about a peculiar young boy who, as he blurs reality and fantasy, takes over the responsibilities of a family man in his father's absence. Full Sundance line-up announced...and it's a doozy!
In addition to the competition titles which were announced yesterday, Sundance has announced the remainder of their line-up and it includes some titles we’re already familiar with along with a huge number of premieres.

Also on the docket are two new series: Next which showcases low/no budget films and Spotlight which highlights films which festival programmers deem worthy of extra love including Enter the Void (review) and Lourdes (the trailer for which I really liked).

I’m particularly excited to see some of the titles in the New Frontier program but overall, the line-up is an impressive one but the Kristen Stewart fan in me is excited to see her turn as Joan Jett in The Runaways and I think it’s fair to say we’re all dying to see Vincenzo Natali’s hotly anticipated Splice (trailer).

In the Midnight section, Adam Green's Frozen is sounding mighty find,...

Sundance 2010 Film Lineup *Updated*
Sundance released their slate for 2010. It includes:43 documentaries on the Middle East12 films about friends who 'discover' something33 movies about people you've never heard about1 comedyHopefully the lineup this year is strong but it doesn't look that way compared to last year. Last year we had Push (Precious), that Lil Wayne documentary that never went anywhere, Mystery Team which might make my top ten, Moon, Mike Tyson documentary, Cold Souls. Just so much last January that was excellent. I hope I don't go out therer and freeze my tail off just to see...I don't know, a documentary about a former Pakistani prime minister or something silly like that. Here's the lineup so far: Premieres To showcase the diversity to contemporary independent cinema, the Sundance Film Festival Premieres section offers the latest work from American and international directors as well as world premieres of highly anticipated films. Sundance reveals noncompetition lineup
Frontier (1987)
The Sundance Film Festival's competition lineup for 2010, announced Wednesday, might demand that audiences wear their serious caps. But the out-of-competition selections allow programmers and viewers to cut loose a little.

The 53 films that populate this year's Premieres, Next, Spotlight, Park City at Midnight and New Frontier sections run the gamut from the cosmically experimental to the star-studded and silly. There is indeed something for everyone at this year's event, which runs Jan. 21-31 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah.

As usual, Premieres collects work involving the industry's higher-profile talent, none more so than John Wells' feature directorial debut, "The Company Men," which stars Ben Affleck, Kevin Costner, Maria Bello, Tommy Lee Jones and Chris Cooper. Mexican actor Diego Luna's directorial debut, "Abel," will screen, as will Philip Seymour Hoffman's "Jack Goes Boating."

Michael Winterbottom has the rare distinction of having two films in...

First “Splice” Clip
RottenTomatoes has posted the first clip from “Splice,” the horror thriller executive produced by Guillermo del Toro and directed by Vincenzo Natali.

Vincenzo Natali also wrote the script with Antoinette Terry Bryant and Doug Taylor.

The film stars Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley as Clive and Elsa, the superstars of the genetic engineering world. They specialize in splicing together DNA from different animals to create fantastical new hybrids. The charismatic couple wants to use human DNA in a new hybrid – something that could yield astronomical medical benefits.

The pharmaceutical company that funds their research, however, is more interested in exploiting their earlier triumphs for easier, short-term profit. Clive and Elsa secretly conduct their own experiment. The result is Dren: an amazing creature who exhibits an array of unexpected developments, both physical and intellectual. Dren exceeds their wildest dreams… and, ultimately, their most terrifying nightmare.

“Splice” also stars Delphine Chaneac, David Hewlett and Brandon McGibbon.

Release updates on Mutant Chronicles and Splice
Fango got the word that Magnolia Pictures has picked up the U.S. rights to Mutant Chronicles, the grisly sci-fi action-thriller based on the popular role-playing game. The film will be distributed under Magnolia’s genre-centric Magnet banner.

Mutant Chronicles will first appear as a video-on-demand title from Magnolia parent the Wagner/Cuban Company’s Ultra VOD service, premiering Friday, March 27. It’ll then receive limited theatrical release on April 24; as we reported here, the movie will have its broadcast premiere on the Sci Fi Channel later this spring. Dead Of Night’s Simon Hunter directed from a script by Event Horizon’s Philip Eisner, with The Mist’s Thomas Jane (pictured), Hellboy’s Ron Perlman, Devon Aoki and John Malkovich starring. “Mutant Chronicles is a blast,” says Magnolia president Eamonn Bowles. “It’s an action-packed thriller with a dynamite cast and very impressive production values.
