Now come on, come all to this tragic affair…wipe off that Aquaman-themed makeup, what’s in is despair. “The End.” has come for the DC Extended Universe, with the send-off to this expansive multimedia franchise coming in the form of the sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. A saga that encompassed everything from Wonder Woman strolling into No Man’s Land and comic accurate Starro to jars of urine and falling CGI babies is now finished. The Lost Kingdom doesn’t necessarily function as a finale to everything that came before it (no Dceu cameos or references to other movies), but some elements of the feature do feel extra humorous when considering this text as a Dceu send-off.

The Titans have stepped up to fill the Justice League's shoes as DC Comics' primary superhero team, giving them a chance to shine individually and as a unit. The Titans face increased pressure and scrutiny as they take on global threats and try to live up to their mentors' expectations. The Titans, who were once sidekicks, have now earned their status as A-List heroes and are the ones responsible for protecting the world in the absence of the Justice League.
The Justice League have always been DC Comics’ primary superhero team. Even when the roster was missing icons like Superman, Wonder Woman, or Batman, the League itself still operated as the de facto first line of defense for Earth. However, with the Justice League disbanded, 2023 finally saw DC Comics give another team its long-overdue chance to fill the League’s shoes – and the Titans are living up to their newfound role.

Robin's special ability helps him deal with the insidious Black Mercy, something that Superman couldn't do. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice stands firm among other Dceu sequels, offering more than just a face-off between heroes, addressing moral responsibilities of superheroes. The movie aged well over the years, with strong performances, rousing background score, and stylish cinematography. Despite its flaws and negative critical reception, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice deserved better reactions and had a relatively better audience score.
The DC Extended Universe has had a rocky journey among critics, beginning with the polarizing reactions to Man of Steel and the embarrassingly low Rotten Tomatoes score awarded to its sequel Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Plastic Man, often underrated, is actually one of the Justice League's most powerful members. Plastic Man's super elasticity allows him to disable even speedster heroes like The Flash. Justice League members underestimate Plastic Man's abilities, but his power and potential danger have been acknowledged by Wonder Woman and Batman.
The A-List members of the Justice League like Wonder Woman and Superman are among the most absurdly powerful characters in the DC Universe. However, the Z-Lister Plastic Man does not get the credit he deserves as one of the League's most powerful members.

DC movies have often had perfectly cast actors who don't get the recognition they deserve. Flawless casting choices can slip through the cracks or be overshadowed by other actors. Paul Reubens' appearance in Batman Returns as Tucker Cobblepot is a chilling portrayal of a high-society monster, setting the stage for Danny DeVito's Penguin. Many actors have brought iconic DC characters to life, such as Jackie Earle Haley's ruthless Rorschach in Watchmen, and Jim Carrey's wacky Riddler in Batman Forever.

Batman's contingency plans for the Justice League can be repurposed and used against other members of the Crime Syndicate. Lex Luthor proves to be more imaginative than Batman by repurposing a lightning rod to potentially take down an evil version of Shazam. While the plan doesn't work on Alexander Luthor, it could work on Shazam, showing that sometimes a plan designed for one person will be effective against another.

Even before the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Dceu’s aspirations of building a cohesive, interconnected universe had come to an abrupt end with the prospect of a big-scale reboot spanning through upcoming live-action and animated ventures. For fans who grew up in the late 1990s, when DC’s diversified animated ventures dominated the pop culture scene, or even earlier than that, when in printed comics DC exemplified absolute dominance in sheer variety and quality of titles, it was inconceivable that its first attempt at live-action world-building would meet a disastrous end—let alone not even come close to replicating the success of the aforementioned mediums. However, even amidst the haphazard, clueless continuity problems, poor reception, and mismanagement, there were silver linings in the form of some iconic moments scattered across sixteen movies and a TV series, which fans will surely remember in years to come. 2023 will go down as the year that the superhero movie bubble finally popped. Dating back to Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" in 2002, Hollywood has been chasing the comic book movie dragon and, particularly since 2008 when the Marvel Cinematic Universe launched with "Iron Man," these movies have been the meat and potatoes of the box office. But this year's only outright successful live-action superhero film was "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" ($845 million worldwide). That narrative is not going to change with the release of "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom," sad to say.

Those who’ve never been exposed to the joys of Hong Kong action cinema would be pardoned for thinking that Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh only blitzed onto the scene opposite Pierce Brosnan’s James Bond, but Yeoh was a star long before Hollywood ever heard of her, evident in her starring in a film featuring Hong Kong’s very own Wonder Woman! And no, it’s not that Wonder Woman. The film in question is Johnnie To’s The Heroic Trio, and, just like any superhero movie from Asia, it’s properly insane. The ‘Wonder Woman’ in question is actually played by Anita Miu, where Yeoh instead plays the Invisible Woman. And no, we don’t mean that Invisible Woman either. Rounding out the cast is Maggie Cheung who plays the Thief Catcher, a Batman analogue. Only this one, like Snyder’s, is very questionably fond of her guns.

The Fast & Furious franchise benefits from the DC Extended Universe's failure and reboot, with many DC actors joining Fast X. Gal Gadot and Dwayne Johnson's returns to Fast X signal their transition away from the uncertain future of the Dceu. Jason Momoa's troubles with Aquaman led to his role as the final villain in the Fast Saga, a benefit for the franchise amid the Dceu's struggles.
The events of Fast X prove the Fast & Furious franchise is a huge winner of the DC Extended Universe's failure and forthcoming reboot. The Fast & Furious movies have always had plenty of star power with links to other franchises, but the connections between Fast X and the Dceu took it to the next level. "Justice League Unlimited" is a pinnacle of superhero cartoons. Had its airing not intersected with my childhood, my fascination with comics probably wouldn't have blossomed the way it did.
The terrific final product wasn't a sign of the creators always working under ideal conditions, however. In the 2000s, Warner Bros. was quite particular about letting DC Comics characters appear in more than one show at a time, apparently out of concern that audiences would be confused by multiple versions of the same character -- hence the infamous "Bat-Embargo." 2004, the year that "Justice League Unlimited" began, also saw the premiere of "The Batman," a solo cartoon about, well, Batman, but set in a different continuity. Batman's villains and supporting cast were therefore off-limits to the "Justice League" team.

Warning: Spoilers for Titans: Beast World #2 ahead!
The Justice League has fallen to Garro's spores, leaving the Titans to take control in DC's new era. Amanda Waller refuses to acknowledge the shifting generational tides and tries to maintain old power structures. The Titans must show that they have surpassed their mentors and take charge in the Beast World event.
With Beast Boy now the mindless "Garro the Conqueror," the Titans find themselves locked in the conflict of a lifetime. "Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom" is experiencing a struggling box office performance, matching a franchise low. The muted financial performance aligns with early audience reactions, earning a low CinemaScore of "B". The marketing campaign for the sequel may have alienated broader audiences, and the promise of a Dcu reboot may have deterred fans from seeing the film.
The final Dceu movie, Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom has equaled a franchise low point that explains why its box office performance is struggling so much. The belated sequel to James Wan's 2018 billion dollar blockbuster closes out the original Dceu movie timeline with James Gunn and Peter Safran's Dcu reboot set to kick off in 2024. And despite the opportunity for Dceu fans to celebrate the series' swansong, it seems precious few of the original audience are actually returning to cinemas for the sequel.

DC's Elseworlds imprint is making a comeback, presenting the opportunity to revisit the concept of Superman's Green Lantern son from Superman: Distant Fires. The story of Superman: Distant Fires was set in a post-apocalyptic world, and featured Superman and Wonder Woman becoming romantically involved, resulting in a son named Bruce. Fans have been waiting for a follow-up to Superman: Distant Fires for 25 years; the new Elseworlds series presents the ideal opportunity to explore the development of Bruce Kent as a Green Lantern.
With the return of DC's Elseworlds imprint, the company has the perfect opportunity to return to one of its most exciting unexplored concepts: Superman's Green Lantern son from Superman: Distant Fires. With the Superman Family expanding in recent years, DC could bring the character into its main continuity; alternatively, it could return to the world of Distant Fires for a sequel, following up on the one-shot's dramatic conclusion.

Gal Gadot‘s portrayal of Wonder Woman made her the leading lady of the Dceu, but she faced some stiff competition to book the part.
The actress joined the DC Comics franchise alongside Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill and was lauded as one of the brightest lights for her portrayal of Diana Prince in 2016′s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Since then, Gal has reprised the role in several projects, including two solo movies. There have been ongoing questions about her future in the franchise.
She’s synonymous with the character, but Gal had to audition for it alongside several other stars.
In fact, we can say for a fact that she faced off against at least three actresses to land the part. Of them, two opened up about their experience auditioning. One of them even explained why they knew that they “never” had a chance to land it.

Shazam's greatest weakness is mind control, which turns him into a living weapon with no one to stop him. This weakness harms others more than Shazam himself, as he is physically invulnerable. If a villain gains control of Shazam, he becomes the deadliest member of the Justice League.
As the World’s Mightiest Mortal, Shazam has always been one of the heaviest hitters on the Justice League. But unlike peers like Superman or even Martian Manhunter, Billy Batson hasn’t really had a consistently direct weakness — like Kryptonite or fire. But just because it’s not as noticeable doesn’t mean it’s not still present, and Shazam’s greatest weakness is more of a threat to his teammates than it is to Billy himself.

In December 2018, Aquaman arrived with the amount of fanfare appropriate for the moment. It was the height of comic book culture, and one of its reigning kings, Jason Momoa, arrived at the movie’s blue carpet premiere with a golden trident. Full to the brim with bluster, he performed a ceremonial dance with members of the Maori community while wife Lisa Bonet and the couple’s kids stood in the wings. Stars Nicole Kidman and Amber Heard brought the glam and the shouts from photographers. After a raucous screening, the festivities then moved from the Chinese Theatre to the poolside afterparty at the Roosevelt Hotel.
The film would ultimately top $1 billion and stood as part of a zenith for comic book movies, in a year that included Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

The Dceu (the DC Extended Universe) is coming to an end this week with “Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom” (read our review). From there, it’s being rebooted as the Dcu by DC Studios and its co-ceo filmmakers James Gunn and Peter Safran. From what we can all glean, about 95% of the old era—the Zack Snyder age of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, and Jason Momoa as Aquaman is being scrapped, and it seems Gunn has elected to keep elements of his “The Suicide Squad” like Peacemaker (John Cena) and Amanda Waller (Viola Davis).

Despite sporadic efforts to repair the disastrous and confusing continuity of DC Extended Universe, it was doomed to fail thanks to multiple problems which plagued the shared universe ranging from misinterpretation of source material, interference in creative vision to controversy surrounding actors. The early signs of mismanagement under the contemporary WB regime were apparent during the divisive reception of the first phase of Dceu, and as a result, the universe almost crash-landed after the poor reception of Justice League (Joss Whedon version) back in 2017. However, the one movie that almost single-handedly turned the proverbial tide in the favor of Dceu was James Wan’s Aquaman, which to date stands as the franchise’s most entertaining and highest-grossing entry. In a franchise where a crossover movie of three premier characters couldn’t meet expectations, Aquaman, formerly known as the bottom of ‘Merman’ jokes, became its savior.

DC Comics is home to some of the best and most iconic superhero characters ever created for fiction and has earned its status as one of the two major powerhouses in comics publishing. Headlined by characters like Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, DC has found mixed success in cinema, ranging from smash hits like Aquaman to flops like Batman and Robin. Though these heroes are no sure bet for success, the DC brand has been associated with intriguing movies.

DC Entertainment has some of the most iconic superheroes in modern fiction, including Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. These characters have been adapted and reimagined for the silver screen and small screen for decades, often boasting some of Hollywood's biggest names in front of and behind the camera. However, not every actor who's appeared in a DC movie has had a completely satisfying production experience or fully enjoy the final films that they star in. DC Comics originally stood for Detective Comics, derived from "Detective Comics, Inc.," and the name was shortened to "DC" on comic book seals in the early 1940s. The company's official name was "National Allied Publications" and later "National Comics Publications," but readers began referring to the comics as "DC" Comics. Despite the redundancy of "Detective Comics Comics," DC Comics became a recognizable and iconic brand associated with popular superheroes, and the name became official.
The DC Comics name is one of the most famous in the comic book industry, boasting Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and more of the most iconic superheroes of all time. The publisher is synonymous with superheroes, but many still wonder: what does the "DC" in DC Comics stand for?
In 1934, the company that would become DC Comics was known only as National Allied Publications, mostly known for producing the tabloid New Fun: The Big Comic Magazine.

Despite their powerful bond, Wonder Woman realizes Superman will never fully commit to their relationship as long as he still has feelings for Lois Lane. Wonder Woman and Superman's relationship escalated from being work partners to lovers, but both had long-term relationships in the past that still impact their current romance. Wonder Woman's account of the relationship ending confirms Clark's enduring love for Lois Lane and suggests DC Comics recognized the controversial nature of their pairing and decided it was not meant to be.
If there were ever a superhero power couple "for the ages" Wonder Woman and Superman would have to be the greatest of all time. After decades of fans 'shipping the two heroes, they became an official couple during DC's New 52 era. However, as with many romantic partnerships, former love interests always affect current relationships - and not even two of the strongest superheroes in the universe can escape that fact.
