Julio Medem, one of Spain’s most distinctive cinematic voices, returns to the spotlight at Berlin’s European Film Market with “8,” an ambitious and formally daring film that spans 90 years of Spanish history through the intertwined lives of Octavio and Adela.
Javier Rey (“Cocaine Coast”) stars as Octavio, while Ana Rujas, acclaimed for her role in Los Javis’ “La Mesías,” plays Adela. Produced by Spain’s Morena Films, behind box office hits “Cell 211” and “Champions,” with Barbazul la película Aie, Eidan Produce and Quexito Films, the feature is sold by Latido Films.

Oriol Paulo has made a name for himself producing complex thriller films that keep audiences guessing. His work is known for imaginative plots and ambiguities that stay with viewers long after the final scene. In The Last Night at Tremore Beach, Paulo aims to once again unsettle and intrigue through an unorthodox tale of premonitions and past trauma.

Coming Next from Spain, a showcase of five series, unspooled at Series Mania on March 21 just after a Spanish series, “Wrong Side of the Tracks” from Mediaset España and Alea Media, had scored 149.6 million watching hours in three weeks on Netflix for Seasons 1 and 2.
That platform connection and power of Spanish series threaded most of the series and much of the commentary at Tuesday’s Next from Spain, supported by Audiiovisual from Spain.
At least in terms of titles now ready to hit the market, there’s little sign as yet of platform pullback in Spain. Rather, it remains a ground zero in the streamer wars.
2023 will see the release of 70 new Spanish scripted series and 27 returning seasons of titles such as “Elite” “Rapa” “30 Coins” and “Veneno,” presenter Irene Jiménez, at Audiovisual 451, told a Next From Spain audience.

Spanish media giant Atresmedia is joining forces with Portocabo, the production outfit behind Movistar Plus hit series “Hierro,” for a remake of Showtime drama “Your Honor,” starring Bryan Cranston.
The Spanish redo is currently at the script stage and initiating casting.
With an undisclosed number of episodes, the project production is scheduled to kick off this year.
The TV series release date is still unknown. But it would be logical for it to launch on platform Atresplayer Premium before airing on Atresmedia’s free-to-air channel Antena 3 primetime, a windowing strategy usually followed by the group with its new fiction releases since Atresplayer Premium bowed in 2019.
“Your Honor” is based on the Israeli TV drama “Kvodo,” created by Ron Ninio and Shlomo Mashiach, and aired first on Israel’s paybox Yes TV.

Javier Rey and Paz Vega toplining The House of Snails - Production / Funding - Spain/Mexico/Peru/USA
The feature debut by Macarena Astorga, now in post-production, is a psychological thriller with a cast rounded off by Pedro Casablanc, Elvira Mínguez, Jesús Carroza and Fernando Tejero. Shot last August (once the state of emergency had been lifted in Spain), The House of Snails, the feature debut by Andalusian director Macarena Astorga, is a psychological thriller starring Javier Rey (seen recently in Secret Origins and El verano que vivimos) and Paz Vega, flanked by young Luna Fulgencio (Father There Is Only One) and a fresh face, Ava Salazar (the lead actress’s daughter). The cast is topped off by Peruvian thesps Carlos Alcántara and Norma Martínez, and Spaniards Pedro Casablanc, Elvira Mínguez, Vicente Vergara, Fernando Tejero and Jesús Carroza. The film, based on the novel of the same name, boasts a screenplay by the book’s author,...
Ibon Cormenzana is directing this immersive, high-octane emotional adventure, rubbing shoulders with the most perilous, harsh and spectacular sides of nature. Alegría, tristeza, miedo, rabia was the original title of the previous film by director-producer Ibon Cormenzana, a Spanish-French production that was eventually released with only the first two elements from that working title (Happy Sad). Once again, these emotions – and many more – will have a starring role in his new movie, La cima (lit. “The Summit”), which is currently being shot and which, once again, is being made as a joint venture between companies in France and Spain. This epic story stars two actors who are very much in demand right now: Patricia López Arnaiz, the favourite among the nominees for various impending awards thanks to her work in Ane Is Missing (the feature debut by David Pérez Sañudo), and Javier Rey,...
The House of Snails is an upcoming international thriller. From Spain, Peru and Mexico, this film looks at a writer, living in a remote Summer house. Here, Antonio hopes to find inspiration; instead, he uncovers a mystery, in the local town. As well, this title stars: Javier Rey (Get Her... If You Can), Paz Vega (Spanglish), Carlos Alcantra and Norma Martinez. A poster was released for the film recently, along with story details. The synopsis also mentions a blurring between reality and fiction. As writer Antonio draws more from those around him, his characters begin to take on a life of their own. A dark legend is uncovered. And, one secret leads to darkness. The poster shows a foggy backdrop. Almost entirely in green hues, one child holds a mask and one light remains on in the house. Very spooky, this early poster reveals very little ahead of the film's potential 2021 release date.

Barcelona-based Filmax has scored international sales rights for upcoming psychological thriller “The House of Snails,” the debut fiction feature of two-time Malaga Film Festival Biznaga de Plata Award-winner Macarena Astorga, shot using the strictest of health and safety protocols just after Spain began to allow post-lockdown production in July.
“The House of Snails” turns on fictional Spanish writer Antonio Prieto, who secludes himself in the mountains outside of Malaga in southern Spain to work on his next book. While there, he falls in lust with local Berta, and meets several other unique characters that find their way onto the pages of his manuscript. After a bit of digging, Antonio realizes the oddities of the rural community are only the façade of a darker mystery, which forces the author to question the lines between reality and fiction.

Madrid — Bambú Producciones, a key driving force behind the international boom in Spanish TV fiction, is entering into a phase of business expansion, tapping showrunners Josep Cister and Diego Sotelo and boosting film production brand Mr. Fields & Friends Cinema.
Founded in 2007 by Ramón Campos and Teresa Fernández-Valdés, and minority owned by Studiocanal, Bambú has produced a large list of high-profile TV dramas led by “Gran Hotel” and “Velvet,” whose success, especially in Latin America, proved that, for the first time ever, there was a mass audience abroad for original Spanish series.
“We are at a time when, given the market demand for Bambú content, we have decided to grow, incorporating names as important as Cister and Sotelo,” Campos told Variety.
A former TV fiction director at Lagardère’s Boomerang TV in Spain, Cister has been responsible for series such as “Old Bridge’s Secret,” “The Time In Between,” “Acacias 38” and “Presumed Guilty.

Madrid — On Nov 1 Netflix will drop its fifth Spanish original series, 1960’s-set drug smuggling drama “Hache,” produced by Madrid’s Weekend Studio for the platform.
Created by Verónica Fernández and directed by Jorge Torregrossa, “Hache” tells the story of Helena (Adriana Ugarte), a prostitute who ends up the favorite of powerful organized crime head Malpica (Javier Rey), a violent man with a bad leg and a morphine addiction to numb the pain.
Ambitious, headstrong and uncompromising, Helena – frequently called Hache, the Spanish pronunciation of the letter H – quickly rises to the very top of the vicious organization which oversees the Barcelona ports for heroin smuggling routes between Africa to the U.S.
Variety was given early access to the series’ first two episodes, and conducted a spoiler-free interview with Fernández and Torregrossa in Barcelona.
The series is said to be based on real events. Can you talk about the historical influences of the series?...
