Delroy Lindo’s reunion with Spike Lee for ‘Da 5 Bloods’ will bring him his first Oscar nomination
Image
Since he began his film acting career over 40 years ago, Delroy Lindo has steadily built a reputation as a well-respected and experienced performer. He has worked with such directors as Ron Howard, Tony Scott, and Danny Boyle, but his collaborations with Spike Lee have proven to be the most fruitful. His prominent roles in three of Lee’s films boosted his profile in the industry and attracted the attention of several critics groups in the 1990s, including the National Society of Film Critics.

Earlier this month, the Nsfc gave Lindo their Best Actor award for his work in the Netflix release “Da 5 Bloods,” which reunited him with Lee after 25 years. The performance also won him the New York Film Critics Circle award and a dozen more nominations from critics groups to date. After decades of putting in the work, all signs point to Lindo receiving his first Oscar nomination for what K.

New York Film Critics Circle Keeps Awards Eligibility to 2020, Will Vote in December
Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci in The Irishman (2019)
While the Oscars and other awards bodies have all pushed events back on their calendar and expanded eligibility for what movies can be considered, the New York Film Critics Circle will only consider movies released in the 2020 calendar year for its annual awards.

The Nyfcc announced Friday it will vote for its 2020 awards on Dec. 18 and that only movies released in theaters or on digital platforms between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2020, will be considered.

Further, the date for the group’s annual Gala Awards dinner is still to be announced, and membership for 2020 members will be frozen this year, with all current members still eligible to vote, even as many critics’ jobs have been affected by Covid-19. No new members will be voted in this year.

“This is a year unlike any other in our lifetimes. But the world of movies hasn’t stopped, and already, even in this very strange year,...

Terminator: Dark Fate First Reactions Call It the Best Sequel Since T2: Judgment Day
Linda Hamilton, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Natalia Reyes, Gabriel Luna, and Mackenzie Davis in Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)
The early reactions to Terminator: Dark Fate are in and it's been called a return to form. Surprise screenings were held over the weekend for fans who believed they were seeing Terminator 2: Judgment Day. With James Cameron back on board alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton, fans were expecting something exciting. Throughout the years, the installments after T2 have been a mixed bag, so seeing the original crew reunite brought some pressure to the project. Thankfully, it looks like they did what they wanted to achieve.

One of the more interesting early reactions to Terminator: Dark Fate is a comparison to The Force Awakens. It's "A satisfying, exciting reboot that's essentially the best parts of T1 and T2 in a blender," according to one opinion, which makes sense with the Star Wars comparison. However, that might not sit so well with some of the people who are not into the latest Star Wars trilogy.

Terminator: Dark Fate - First Reactions Arrive
Kirsten Howard Oct 21, 2019

Terminator: Dark Fate is the best one since T2, apparently.

Terminator: Dark Fate will arrive on Nov. 1, and it sees a return to the franchise for original final girl Linda Hamilton and her Judgment Day co-star, Edward Furlong (at least briefly). Deadpool director Tim Miller rose to the challenge of reviving the Terminator series under the watchful eye of producer James Cameron, and the film also has some new blood in the form of Mackenzie Davis, Gabriel Luna, Natalia Reyes, and Diego Boneta.

After Terminator: Salvation and Terminator: Genysis were poorly received - though we maintain it's pretty hard to be mad at a movie about killer robots smashing stuff up for the most part - have Miller, Cameron and Hamilton managed to breathe new life into the series with Dark Fate? According to the first reactions, which have been pouring onto social media, the answer is "yes.

First Dark Fate Reactions Call It The Best Terminator Movie Since T2
It’s almost inevitable that every valuable property in Hollywood is going to be rebooted eventually, but the producers behind the Terminator franchise seem to be trying especially hard in this regard. The upcoming sixth outing for the series, Terminator: Dark Fate, will be the third hybrid of reboot we’ve seen in ten years, but given that it’s set to be the spiritual successor to James Cameron’s iconic sci-fi sequel Judgment Day, hopes are high that it’ll be a success.

Of course, it’s not like we haven’t had high hopes before only to be incredibly disappointed. After all, both Salvation and Genisys were touted as having the potential to spawn new storytelling opportunities and ultimately, new franchises, but both movies failed to deliver. The potential was definitely there, but each film faltered in its execution as neither McG nor Alan Taylor proved to be...

‘Glass’ Review Roundup: Critics Split on M. Night Shyamalan Sequel
M. Night Shyamalan in Le dernier maître de l'air (2010)
After M. Night Shyamalan’s 2016 film “Split” was revealed to be set in the same universe as his 2000 superhero thriller “Unbreakable,” the director brings all the characters together in “Glass.”

The heroes and villains of the previous two movies return in “Glass.” Bruce Willis plays David Dunn, the security guard with super strength; Samuel L. Jackson is Elijah Price a.k.a. the evil genius Mr. Glass who has bones as fragile as his nickname; and James McAvoy returns as Kevin Wendell Crumb, the villain from “Split” who has 24 different personalities.

In his review for Variety, Owen Gleiberman bemoans the lack of mystery and discovery that made the first two films so special. “The movie, watchable as it is, is still a disappointment, because it extends and belabors the conceits of ‘Unbreakable’ without the sensation of mystical dark discovery that made that film indelible,” he said.

“Glass” hits theaters on Jan.

The Internet Reacts To First Detective Pikachu Trailer
While you have every right to stay skeptical about Detective Pikachu, it must be said that the film’s first trailer suggests that the franchise’s long-awaited jump to live-action cinema will prove to be a fair bit less awkward than many of us were anticipating, with the fluffy little investigator and his peers generally looking pretty well-rendered next to the human cast.

Is that a good enough reason to get excited about this upcoming Ryan Reynolds-led flick? Not necessarily, but it’s clear that this teaser is already winning over some naysayers. While there are certainly still Pokémon fans out there who aren’t on board with the project, the bulk of the online response to the trailer so far looks to be ranging from cautiously optimistic to “mega hyped.”

Feast your eyes below for a spectrum of opinions:

So… Detective Pikachu looks…good? https://t.co/I4sJuzjvT4 pic.

Is Comic-Con Still the Place for Building Blockbuster Buzz?
Is Hollywood's love affair with San Diego Comic-Con fading?

In a smart story on ScreenCrush in June, writer Matt Singer discussed some of the reasons this may be the case. In short: After a brief pinnacle where studios and fans enjoyed a happy medium of access and promotion, the crowds grew too big, more and more companies tried to establish a presence there and the cost of rising above the noise and getting people’s attention became too great.

That Disney would not be attending to offer anything new related to its Marvel Cinematic Universe films certainly got a lot headlines,...

‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout’ Rave Reactions Go Wild for Tom Cruise, Compare Sequel to ‘Mad Max’ and ‘The Dark Knight’
Tom Cruise at an event for Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
“Mission: Impossible – Fallout” was unveiled to U.S. press for the first time July 11, and let’s just say critics and reporters are going crazy for the latest Tom Cruise sequel. The sixth “Mission: Impossible” installment is once again directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who won critics and fans over with the last outing, “Rogue Nation.” Cruise and McQuarrie are proving to be an action movie dream team, as the first reactions to “Fallout” are hailing it as one of the best action movies in years.

“Fallout” brings Ethan Hunt back to the big screen in a mission to stop three nuclear bombs from falling into the heads of religious anarchists. Franchise veterans Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, and Michelle Monaghan all return for another round of action mayhem, while Henry Cavill joins the franchise as the CIA’s most lethal assassin.

“‘Fallout’ is easily the best action movie since ‘Mad Max: Fury Road,...
