For years, Hollywood talent managers have grumbled at a California law that puts them in danger of losing their commissions if they’re found to have engaged in activities related to obtaining work for their clients.
The issue relates to the Talent Agencies Act, a licensing scheme that was originally enacted to regulate agents and ensure that they’re acting in their clients’ best interests. The law says that only licensed agents can “procure” work in the entertainment business and that managers caught doing the same can have their contracts voided and commissions forfeited. Although lawmakers’ intent was to prevent unscrupulous business dealings, like conflicts of interests, it grew to be used as a sword largely wielded by talent to sidestep having to pay commissions. At least $250 million in fees have been nullified over the past 55 years, per the trade group representing managers in the entertainment industry.

It’s rare for the right project to come to the right person at the right time, but in the case of “Pachinko,” that’s exactly what happened. Long before Blue Marble Pictures and Blue Marble Management’s founder and CEO Theresa Kang ever picked up Min Jin Lee’s novel, she was poised to help bring this particular story to the screen.
When Kang encountered the 2017 book, she was still working as an agent for WME. “A lot of books get discussed at agencies,” she told TheWrap. “But I remember when I heard about this one, I was like, ‘Wait a minute, Zainichi Koreans in Japan?'”

A Korean family’s generational struggles with war, forbidden romance and business survival continue in the second season trailer for Apple TV+’s Pachinko, which dropped on Monday.
Parallel storylines in the latest series teaser have Minha Kim starting in Osaka, Japan, in 1945 as younger Sunja making dangerous decisions to ensure her family’s war-time survival, before Minari Oscar winner Yuh-Jung Youn as an aged Sunja, now a grandmother, is shown with her Western-educated grandson Solomon Baek (Jin Ha) in 1989 in Tokyo.
The time-hopping, trilingual Pachinko trailer sees financial whiz Solomon wrestling with his family roots and the biggest deal of his career as an American-educated, Japanese businessman pursuing his own fortune and future.
“Do not forget who you are. Can you do that?” Sunja, now the older family matriarch, asks Solomon at one point in the trailer. After all, the story of the Baek family across four generations — and told in the Korean,...

The classic B-movie title Attack of the 50 Foot Woman is getting a remake from Tim Burton and Gillian Flynn. Burton is attached to direct the movie from a script by the Gone Girl scribe.
Warner Bros. is behind the project, which will be a re-imagining of the 1950s genre film. The succinct logline for that earlier film reads: “Turned into a giantess by an alien, a woman (Allison Hayes) finds her husband (William Hudson) in a bar with a floozy (Yvette Vickers).” Nathan Juran directed the pic, which was released by Warners.
Burton is also set to produce the project with Andrew Mittman and Tommy Harper. Kai Dolbashian will executive produce.
Burton was last in theaters with Dumbo, which failed to preform at the box office, but he most recently found success with the Netflix series Wednesday and recently wrapped on a Beetlejuice sequel for Waenrs. He is repped by WME.

“The Nightmare Before Christmas” creator Tim Burton and “Gone Girl” writer Gillian Flynn are tackling a remake of “Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman” for Warner Bros.
Burton is directing the upcoming film from a script by Flynn. The science-fiction horror story follows a wealthy heiress who grows into a giant after an alien encounter and exacts revenge on her cheating husband. It’s unclear how closely this new take will follow the original 1958 movie, starring Allison Hayes, William Hudson and Yvette Vickers. The first film reportedly carried a budget of just $88,000 — so it’s reasonable to assume the remake will have a slightly higher price tag.
The project reteams Burton with Warner Bros., where he is currently working on the sequel to his 1988 movie “Beetlejuice.” The follow-up film about a pesky poltergeist, newly and fittingly titled “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” will be released in theaters on Sept. 6. His other directing credits include “Edward Scissorhands,...

Theresa Kang, founder and CEO of Blue Marble Pictures and Blue Marble Productions, has never followed someone else’s script for success. That’s telegraphed by the company’s name — inspired by the iconic photo of Earth taken from space just over 50 years ago, it speaks to the fearless exploration of new frontiers — and the singular, residential vibe of its Los Angeles headquarters.

Though most kudos events are competitive, the annual AFI Awards, honoring 21 film and TV works, proved communal. Sarah Polley chatted with Michelle Williams, Jerry Bruckheimer was deep in conversation with James Cameron, the “Better Call Saul” talent huddled with “Reservation Dogs” and Steven Spielberg enthused about “The Bear” to the show’s team and FX Networks chairman John Landgraf.
The luncheon Jan. 13 at the Four Seasons Beverly Hills was filled with 250 industry heavy-hitters, but the scene-stealer was someone who had no attachment to any of the honored works: Al Pacino, who closed the event with a 10-minute speech that seemed rambling and hilarious, but proved to be pointed and concluded with a bang.
Before the event started, Universal Pictures chairwoman Donna Langley praised the annual gathering to Variety, saying: “It reminds us of the dignity and elegance of the industry as we gather here to celebrate artistry.”

The journey from page to screen for Pachinko began in 2017, on a plane ride from London to New York.
The transatlantic flight was a typical commute for Soo Hugh, who at the time served as executive producer and co-showrunner on the first season of AMC’s The Terror. Nearly seven hours in the air provided an opportunity for Hugh to finally—though somewhat hesitantly—dig into Min Jin Lee’s recently released New York Times bestseller. Theresa Kang-Lowe, Hugh’s former agent and friend, had sent it her way.
“I felt very ambivalent about reading it just because I knew it was going to be very personal,” Hugh says. “I knew that it was going to be this beautiful story and I also was just finishing up another big international show, so I was in a very particular headspace at that time.”

It’s apparent within Pachinko’s opening moments that the Apple TV+ adaptation of Min Jin Lee’s best-selling 2017 novel of the same name features some major departures from the source material. The opening sequence cuts between Japanese-occupied Korea in 1915 and New York City in 1989, unlike the book, which unfurls its multigenerational family saga linearly.
What’s less apparent is that production on Pachinko’s first season also took place out of order and sometimes simultaneously in multiple locations that included Canada, Japan and seven Korean cities. With two separate timelines occurring half a century apart and directors Kogonada and Justin Chon splitting the eight episodes, the Pachinko team, comprised of a multinational, multilingual crew of 300, was able to operate two units that worked in tandem to pull off the ambitious project, which follows family matriarch Sunja as a young woman (Minha Kim...

When the cast and showrunners of “Yellowjackets” took the stage at IndieWire’s Consider This FYC Brunch, everyone in the room wanted to learn the secret sauce behind the Showtime blockbuster. But the team made sure to emphasize that there was no single thing that set the show apart. Instead, the show succeeds because of how it delicately balances multiple aspects of the series that seemingly contradict each other. (Full videos of all five panels will be published next week.)
“Tonally, I think we were all wondering if the filaments would come to the magnet,” said executive producer and co-showrunner Jonathan Lisco while speaking on a panel moderated by IndieWire editor-in-chief Dana Harris-Bridson. “Because there’s a lot of different tonalities in here, which we thread together into this single impact on our audience.”

The “century-spanning” nature of the story created major production challenges, but it also spurred the essential creative vision for the production team. It was important...

Spoiler Alert: This post contains details about the season one finale of Pachinko, titled “Chapter Eight.”
The Pachinko season ender offers optimism and growth from heartbreaking losses for nearly all generations of the Baek family.
The episode begins in 1938, years after Noa’s birth. Now seven years old, Noa prepares for baby brother Mozasu’s doljabi ceremony. Just before audiences can see what fate-determining item Mozasu picks, a remixed, pop version of the opening sequence livens things up.
From Mozasu’s dol to Hana’s (Mari Yamamoto) final moments, the finale spans the cycle of life. In the present, Hana’s surrounded by her loved ones, including Sunja (Yuh-jung Youn) and Etsuko (Kaho Minami), who have no choice but to accept her eventual death. Tragedy also strikes in the past, with Noa and Sunja (Minha Kim) learning that Isak (Steve Sang-Hyun Noh) has been arrested for suspected treason against the emperor.

In the Apple TV+ series Pachinko, Solomon (Jin Ha) speaks Korean, Japanese and English. The show, based on Min Jin Lee’s book, traces four generations of his family from Korea and Japan (as Zainichi Koreans), so all three languages are involved. Ha does not speak Japanese and studied the different dialects with vocal coach Yu-Mi Kang.
“Having lived in Korea and Hong Kong before I came to America with my family, the experiences of being dropped in a foreign place and having to fit in or find myself, that’s hard enough for anyone,” Ha said on a Deadline Contenders panel on Sunday at the Paramount Theatre. “Being an immigrant as well or an Asian American person, was an experience that I felt directly connected to Solomon’s straddling the three different cultures he’s a part of. My grandparents and relatives lived through the colonial era in Korea.
