Former soccer star Gary Lineker is to step down from hosting BBC Sport‘s flagship Match of the Day program after 26 years at the helm.

The ex-Barcelona player and England captain, regarded as one of the country’s best-ever soccer players, will leave his post at the end of the current Premier League season having first taken on the role in 1999, but has extended his BBC Sport contract until 2026 when he will lead the public broadcaster’s World Cup coverage. He will continue with Motd‘s Top Ten podcast and host The Rest is Football podcast.

Match of the Day is one of the world’s most famous soccer shows, airing on the BBC since 1964. It shows the highlights from Saturday’s Premier League matches during a late-evening BBC One slot and features regular expert insight from guests such as Alan Shearer, Frank Lampard, Micah Richards, Martin Keown, Danny Murphy and Theo Walcott.

Jamie Vardy Set To Sign New Deal With Leicester
Rui Vieira/AP

Leicester striker Jamie Vardy is set to extend his current deal with the club by three-and-a-half years, BBC Sport has reported.

The England forward, who has been in fine form this season, is set to be rewarded with a much improved deal on his current £40,000-a-week contract.

In November he became the first player to score in 11 consecutive Premier League games, breaking Ruud van Nistelrooy’s record previously set at 10.

Vardy’s form has pushed the Foxes to the top of the league, and put them in genuine contention for the title this season. A far cry from where they were12 months ago, as they held up the everyone else sitting rock bottom.

In February last year the bookies had Leicester at 10000/1 to claim the title, now they’re 8/1 joint third favourites.

Worth a tenner?

The 29-year-old’s form has earned him his first England caps, as...

Keown Slams Newcastle’s Transfer Policy – Claiming They “Don’t Seem To Be Buying Well”
David Nelson Sports Photography

Martin Keown claims that it is “not really surprising” that both Newcastle United and Sunderland are struggling – because they “don’t seem to be buying well at all”.

The Magpies have spent close to £50 million on five different players this summer, yet former Arsenal defender Keown does not believe there is anyone in either of the North East sides’ squads who are “willing to roll up their sleeves” when things get tough.

And, despite Newcastle having signed Georginio Wijnaldum, Aleksandar Mitrovic, Chancel Mbemba, Ivan Toney and Florian Thauvin already this summer for a hefty outlay, Keown admits he is not sure “life will be that different” under Steve McClaren.

Phil Toscano/Pa Archive

Speaking in his “Tackle Keown” column on the Daily Mail’s website, the former Premier League winner said:

“You look at a team like Southampton – they buy well and bring through their own talent.

Patrick Vieira To Hold Newcastle Talks “Early Next Week”
Adam Davy/Empics Sport

Almost immediately after numerous sources reported Newcastle United would be making a third approach for former Derby County manager Steve McClaren in the coming days, Sky Sports News broke the news that Patrick Vieira is expected to hold talks with The Magpies “early next week”.

Ssn’s North East reporter Keith Downie took to Twitter to say: “Breaking: We understand Patrick Vieira will hold talks with @Nufc early next week over their Head Coach vacancy. More on @SkySportsNewsHQ,” before discussing the developments further live on air.

Maybe the Head Coach’s job isn’t the one horse race many accepted it to be.

BBC pundits World Cup Guide: Who will win? Are England doomed?
With a festival of football about to take over your TV screens for the summer, we caught up with the BBC pundits and presenters heading out to Brazil to ask the big questions.

Who is going to win it? Are England doomed? And what on earth do we do if it goes to penalties?

England's chances?

Things don't look too cheery for Roy's boys. Getting out of the group stage is being treated as a major achievement, and even getting that far is being too optimistic for some of the pundits.

Mark Chapman: "I can't see them getting out of the group. I don't know if that makes me pessimistic, realistic or what. I just can't seem them getting past Uruguay. Thankfully, I think fans are more realistic and the media are being more realistic this time. We haven't seen any England players wrapped in the St George's flag saying...

Alan Hansen leaves Match of the Day: Will you miss him?
Alan Hansen bid farewell to the Match of the Day studio last night as he called time on the 2013/14 Premier League season and also his own career at the BBC.

Hansen has been one of the key faces of BBC Football for 22 years, but after one more World Cup in Brazil, the former Liverpool captain will be hanging up his punditry boots for good.

He managed to turn "shocking defending" into a catchphrase and his line, "you can't win anything with kids" - referring to a Manchester United team who went on to win the double in 1995 - still haunts him to this day.

But Hansen hasn't been universally liked as a pundit for many years. From criticisms about his hefty pay packet, to his partnership on the Match of the Day panel with Alan Shearer, there are plenty of football fans who consider him a crossed-legged cliché machine and uninspiring.
