The NFL’s Next Big Play: Owning the Media
Image
This month may go down as a landscape-altering month for the National Football League. On Aug. 5, the NFL and Disney announced a major deal, trading the NFL Network, rights to RedZone and other media assets to ESPN in exchange for a 10 percent equity stake in the sports media juggernaut.

A few days later, David Ellison’s Skydance closed its $8 billion deal for Paramount Global, taking control of one of the league’s biggest TV partners … and instantly giving the league an equity stake as well, owing to Skydance Sports joint venture between the league and Skydance.

But arguably the biggest change will come Aug. 21, when ESPN and Fox each launch their new streaming services, and bring their NFL games to streaming outside of the pay-tv bundle for the first time.

It is a shift that is simultaneously subtle (of course they are launching new streaming services) but also earth-shatteringly disruptive.

NFL to Buy 10% Stake in ESPN
Image
The National Football League has entered into an agreement to acquire a 10% stake in ESPN in exchange for the NFL Network and other media assets, the companies announced Tuesday, in a deal that more closely binds together one of the largest media companies with the world’s most valuable sports league.

As part of the deal, ESPN will take control of the NFL Network, its linear RedZone Channel and NFL Fantasy. The league will continue to own and operate NFL Films, NFL+, NFL.com, the NFL Podcast Network, the NFL Fast channel and the official sites for the league’s 32 clubs. It will also continue to own, operate, and produce NFL RedZone and retain the rights to distribute NFL RedZone digitally.

The parties are also entering into an agreement for the NFL Network and other assets to license the league’s content and IP, giving ESPN access to a steady flow of games.

NFL to Acquire Stake in ESPN as Part of Blockbuster Deal With Disney
Image
In a landscape-altering deal, Disney will acquire assets from NFL Media, including NFL Network, with the league acquiring a 10 percent ownership stake in the sports media giant.

ESPN will fully own NFL Network, with plans to bake it into the upcoming direct-to-consumer streaming service. The RedZone channel, meanwhile, will join Disney’s linear portfolio, with Disney also planning to merge its ESPN fantasy football product with NFL Media’s fantasy product.

Perhaps most importantly, the NFL will also license games, RedZone, NFL Films programming and other content and rights to ESPN, potentially supercharging the streaming service when the deal closes.

And ESPN will get the rights to the “RedZone” brand, potentially opening the door to expanding the brand to other sports and platforms.

“Today’s announcement paves the way for the world’s leading sports media brand and America’s most popular sport to deliver an even more compelling experience for NFL fans,...

Saquon Barkley Clarifies That He Turned Down Donald Trump's Sports Council Spot, Was 'Shocked' When He Was Included
Image
Saquon Barkley was one of the athletes named to Donald Trump‘s “President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition,” which included 30 names of athletes from different sports.

The 28-year-old Philadelphia Eagles running back was previously photographed spending time with the Potus, so many assumed he might have been a Trump supporter.

While his inclusion in the council was not necessarily a surprise on first glance, Saquon then revealed that he actually turned down his position in the council.

He said (via ESPN), “A couple months ago, it was brought to my team about the council. So I’m not really too familiar with it. I felt like I am going to be super busy, so me and my family thought it would probably be of best interest to not accept that. I was definitely a little shocked when my name was mentioned. I’m assuming it’s something great,...

Manhattan Shooter Shane Tamura Tried To Target NFL Headquarters But Got Lost: ‘Study My Brain Please. I’m Sorry!’
Image
On July 29, Mayor Eric Adams (D-New York) announced that a gunman who fatally shot four people at a Manhattan office building this week had intended to target the National Football League’s headquarters.

On Monday, Shane Tamura shot several people in the building’s lobby but then mistakenly entered the wrong set of elevator banks and found himself on the 33rd floor, where the offices for real estate company Rudin Management are located. The skyscraper he entered is home to both the NFL headquarters and Blackstone, one of the world’s largest investment firms, in addition to many other tenants, including Rudin Management.

Security footage shows Tamura exiting a double-parked BMW with an M4 rifle in hand, a little before 6:30 p.m. Once inside the lobby, Tamura began to open fire. He struck a police officer working a corporate security detail, a woman who tried to take cover, a...

Manhattan Gunman Shane Tamura Blamed NFL For Cte He Suffered From, Asked For His Brain To Be Studied In Suicide Note
Image
In a Manhattan skyscraper on Monday, four people were fatally shot and one was wounded, at the hands of suspect Shane Tamura, who intended to target the NFL headquarters but mistakenly took the wrong elevator.

After arriving at the wrong floor, following three fatal shots in the lobby, Tamura shot another person and proceeded to turn the gun on himself. A suicide note on his body revealed he believed the NFL was to blame for his Cte (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) and asked for his brain to be studied. While Tamura played high school football two decades before, police have not found any evidence of him suffering from Cte or a traumatic brain injury.

Of the four people who died, identities of two are presently known:

In a TV interview on Tuesday, Mayor Eric Adams (D-New York) said that one of the victims was NYPD officer Didarul Islam, 36. Adams said, “Our officer,...

Gunman in NYC Shooting Claimed to Have Cte and Appeared to Target NFL Offices
Image
The gunman who killed four people and wounded a fifth during a mass shooting at a midtown Manhattan office building on Monday left a note that claimed he was suffering from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (Cte), possibly related to his time playing high school football, a law enforcement source confirms to Rolling Stone.

The man, identified as Shane Tamura, died by suicide following the shooting, which took place in the Park Avenue tower that houses the headquarters of the National Football League. The suspect had no known connection to the NFL.

NFL Employee “Seriously Injured” in New York Office Shooting, Security to Be Increased
Image
An NFL employee was “seriously injured” in the deadly shooting at the league’s New York City offices on Monday, commissioner Roger Goodell said in a staff memo.

The staffer is in the hospital and in stable condition, Goodell added, saying that the league is supporting his family.

Otherwise, Goodell said, in the note sent Monday night, that the NFL’s employees are “otherwise safe and accounted for, and the building has nearly been cleared.”

Four people, including an off-duty New York City police officer, were killed in the shooting at the league’s Midtown Manhattan offices at 345 Park Avenue, and the gunman killed himself.

On Tuesday, New York City Mayor Eric Adams said the gunman targeted the NFL’s headquarters but took the wrong elevator. He shot several people in the building’s lobby before taking the elevator to the 33rd floor offices of the company that owns the building,...

NFL Employee Seriously Injured In Shooting At Manhattan Office Tower
Image
An NFL employee was seriously injured in a shooting at a Midtown Manhattan office tower Monday where a gunman killed at least four people before turning his weapon on himself.

The League has its headquarters in the 44-story building at 52nd and Park Avenue.

“A gunman committed an unspeakable act of violence in our building at 345 Park Avenue. One of our employees was seriously injured in this attack. He is currently in the hospital and in stable condition. NFL staff are at the hospital and we are supporting his family,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement.

All other employees are safe and accounted for, Goodell said. New York employees were to work remotely Tuesday. There will be an increased security presence at the building in the days and weeks to come, he said in the message.

What does the Paramount and Skydance merger mean for viewers?
Image
The FCC has cleared the way for Paramount and Skydance to merge. What will it mean for viewers?

It looks as if the Paramount Global and Skydance Media merger is finally going to come to fruition. The deal received approval from the Federal Communications Commission on Thursday, which was by far the biggest outstanding obstacle to the merger’s closing. But once all of the I’s are dotted and the Ts are crossed, what kind of changes will customers notice from Paramount? While there is still a lot left to be determined, the companies’ executives have given some clues, so we will try to interpret them for you here.

Key Details: Tech and media together: David Ellison has pledged to make the new Paramount more tech-forward. NFL changes?: The NFL’s contract with CBS allows it to change its deal with the channel if ownership changes. Going south:...

Is the NFL gearning up to renegotiate its TV deals?
Image
A window could open for the NFL to get a raise for its broadcast rights before the 2029 opt-out date in its contracts.

The NFL doesn’t play second fiddle to anyone. Thanks to its overwhelming popularity and dominance in the broadcast market, the league has long held unprecedented power when it comes to maximizing its revenue, and it may have a golden opportunity to do just that in the years to come. According to John Ourand of Puck, the NFL might approach its broadcast partners looking to renegotiate, even sooner than had previously been expected.

Key Details: Opening the door?: A contractual clause that will be triggered by the Paramount and Skydance merger could cause the NFL to ask broadcasters to renegotiate. Under the wire: If the NFL renegotiates before 2028, it will beat the MLB and NHL to market. Bye-bye, opt-out clause: Renegotiated agreements could negate the opt-out clause currently existing in NFL contracts.

Fanatics Bets That Pop Culture and Star Athletes Can Take Its Festival Game to Another Level
Image
There may be only one company that could get LeBron James, Tom Brady, Kevin Costner, Spike Lee, Jay-Z, Travis Scott, NBA star Victor Wembanyama, YouTuber Kai Cenat and dozens of other high-wattage names from the worlds of sports and entertainment under one roof: Fanatics, the sports merchandise, collectible and entertainment firm founded by Michael Rubin.

And they want fans to come along too.

Fanatics is bringing back its flagship live event, Fanatics Fest, to New York City on June 20-22, and in addition to a metric ton of sports stars, the company is doubling down on artists and entertainers (hence the likes of Costner and Lee).

“It’s a heck of a challenge, I wouldn’t say it’s fun. Most of what we do is fun, I don’t consider this to be fun,” quips Rubin in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, when asked about booking the stars...

NFL Chief Media Officer Brian Rolapp Exiting After 22 Seasons
Image
The NFL’s chief media officer Brian Rolapp is exiting his role after serving at the league for 22 seasons, an individual familiar with the matter tells TheWrap. He is expected to take over as CEO of PGA Tour Enterprises, according to media reports.

Rolapp first joined the NFL in 2003 as director of finance and strategy and has served as chief media and business officer since 2017. During his tenure, he was responsible for negotiating key media partnerships, overseeing NFL Media, NFL Films, 32 Equity and the league’s sponsorship and consumer products business, and leading major initiatives to expand the NFL’s global footprint and digital presence.

“We have spent some time planning for this change and are confident we will successfully manage the responsibilities while we align our structure to meet our long-term strategic goals,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a memo obtained by TheWrap. “We will share more details soon.

Brian Rolapp, NFL’s Chief Media Officer, Heads to PGA Tour as CEO
Image
Brian Rolapp, one of the most powerful executives in the media industry, is leaving a pivotal role at the National Football League, where he has helped navigate rights deals and a major expansion into streaming, to head up the PGA Tour as its first CEO, according to a person familiar with the matter.

PGA Tour, which began a search for its new top executive in December, declined to comment. The NFL declined to make executives available for comment.

Rolapp, the NFL’s chief media and business officer, has exerted a great deal of influence over where the NFL’s games are seen, experimenting with new venues like Netflix and YouTube even while maintaining traditional ties to CBS, Fox, NBC and Disney’s ESPN. Under his aegis, the football league set up an opt-out clause for its current long-term deals with the big traditional media companies and Amazon that allows for...

At the Upfronts, Sports Sideline Scripted TV as Studios Lean In to Live Events
Image
In the glory days of the TV upfronts, the broadcast networks would build up to a big reveal: The schedule release.

The fall schedule would be revealed, and media buyers could get a glimpse of what show would get that prized Friends or CSI lead-in.

In 2025, the upfronts still build up to a schedule release, but it isn’t a fall lineup: It’s an NFL game.

The only connective tissue between this year’s upfronts, from NBCUniversal and Fox to Disney, YouTube and Netflix was sports, and the NFL in particular, with every company using their presentation to reveal an upcoming matchup that advertisers will want to buy into. Netflix and YouTube each had NFL commissioner Roger Goodell make the reveals himself (though only Netflix made him wear a Santa Claus-esque coat).

NBCUniversal used its event to tout the return of the NBA on NBC, bringing out John Tesh...

At YouTube Brandcast, Lady Gaga, ‘Hot Ones’ & NFL Help Video Giant Mark 20 Creator-Shaped Years
Image
At YouTube Brandcast on Wednesday night, the finale of a three-day blitz of upfront presentations in New York, Lady Gaga achieved the rarest of things: a standing ovation and screams of enthusiasm from a crowd of advertisers.

The pop star’s scorching 20-minute set closed things on a high note and received the opposite of the usually jaded reactions, but the event had already been a substantive one before she stepped onstage. The 20th anniversary of YouTube earlier this year served as the framework for the presentation, with appearances and remarks reflecting the milestone.

“In just two decades, YouTube has reshaped how we watch entertainment,” CEO Neil Mohan said. Live events, from concerts to sports to many other kinds, have come to be one of YouTube’s foundational elements as technology improvements have enabled more seamless livestreams. “We want to bring more of these moments to fans everywhere,” Mohan said.

YouTube Will Stream Kansas City Chiefs-L.A. Chargers NFL Game For Free From Brazil This September – Update
Image
Updated with matchup details. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said that the Kansas City Chiefs will face the L.A. Chargers in an early-September game streaming globally on YouTube.

The commissioner made the announcement Wednesday night at YouTube’s Brandcast event for advertisers. The Chargers being in on the precedent-setting streaming event from Brazil had been disclosed Wednesday by YouTube. “I can trust you, right?” Goodell said to the audience, given that the event was a few minutes before the league’s full schedule reveal was planned.

Previous: In a first, YouTube will stream a full NFL game in September, exclusively carrying the league’s newly established annual game in Brazil.

The NFL had previously announced a sequel to last fall’s successful debut edition in São Paulo, which streamed on Peacock, but no rights partner had been announced. YouTube will include a splashy segment on the game at its Brandcast event for advertisers on Wednesday.

Inside the Netflix Upfront: Charlize Theron, Roger Goodell and Quite a Few Catchphrases
Image
Netflix returned to the upfronts on Wednesday afternoon with a presentation that, at first, looked like it might be a production of Waiting for Gadot.

Initially looking awfully serious, Jude Law and Jason Bateman stood in respective spotlights on an otherwise empty stage at downtown’s Perelman Performing Arts Center in Manhattan. But the facade soon cracked. The dependably sardonic Bateman set up a trailer for their new series, Black Rabbit, as Law played his part and pushed one of the streamer’s chosen slogans of the day: “Welcome to the center of attention.”

The messaging has not changed since the last dog and pony show for media buyers: Netflix has achieved cultural ubiquity in a manner that no other streamer has come close. Naturally, it is the best place for advertising. Right? Right? Amy Reinhard, Netflix’s president of advertising, kicked off a one-ish hour spiel by reiterating that...

YouTube to Sell Ad Sponsorships for Cultural Moments Like the Oscars and Emmys, Caps Upfront With Stellar Lady Gaga Set
Image
YouTube is an anomaly in the TV upfronts: Unlike other networks and streamers, it doesn’t present a big slate of new programming to whet Madison Avenue’s appetite for buying ads.

Instead, YouTube touts scale others can’t match. And to underscore the claim that the platform drives culture, it invited a bunch of personalities to this year’s YouTube Brandcast upfront presentation to wow the crowd — including Lady Gaga, who brought down the house with a rollicking five-song performance; MrBeast (aka Jimmy Donaldson), YouTube’s most-followed creator; vlogger and podcaster Brittany Broski; Sean Evans, host of “Hot Ones”; and gaming streamer IShowSpeed. Also on hand: NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who talked up the league’s deal for YouTube’s first free livestreamed NFL game next season.

As far as monetizing the zeitgeist, YouTube’s biggest news Wednesday was the announcement of a new sponsorship package for advertisers to...

Netflix Upfront 2025: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, ‘Stranger Things,’ and Renewals Galore
Image
Netflix returned to the upfronts in fine fashion.

Netflix’s upfront event took place at the Perelman Performing Arts Center in Manhattan. The biggest name in streaming kept things intimate, with a scant 500 or so people in attendance. Compared to Disney, which filled a convention hall at the Javits Center, and NBCUniversal, which took over Radio City Music Hall, Netflix’s presentation felt downright cozy.

Jude Law and Jason Bateman opened the show with some discussion of Netflix’s reach and programming before some playful banter and hyping up their new drama series “Black Rabbit.”

Amy Reinhard, Netflix’s president of advertising, took the stage next, telling advertisers in attendance that Netflix shows are not just put on in the background and ignored. “When you compare us to our competitors, attention starts higher and ends much higher,” Reinhard said. “And even more impressive, members pay as much attention to mid-roll...

Here are the six questions we have about YouTube’s exclusive NFL broadcast deal
Image
After weeks of speculation, YouTube has officially locked up the exclusive broadcast rights to an NFL game. The home of NFL Sunday Ticket will offer a free broadcast for the September 5 matchup between the Los Angeles Charges and the Kansas City Chiefs — a game that will take place at the Arena Corinthians in São Paulo, Brazil.

The broadcast deal is a major coup for a platform that has dramatically upped its gridiron presence since it became the official distributor of the Sunday Ticket package ahead of the 2023 NFL season. YouTube is primed to compete with the likes of Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, and Peacock (all of which have scored their own exclusive NFL broadcasts), but we still have some questions about the Xs and Os of this particular strategy. Here are some of the queries that have crossed our minds:

Will this be the first of many free NFL broadcasts?...

What Does a ‘100 Percent Tariff’ on Movies Made in ‘Foreign Lands’ Even Mean — and Can Trump Literally Do It?
Image
Liberation Day has come for Hollywood. If you thought the movie industry had dodged a bullet after President Trump reversed course the last time, think again.

That’s the feeling around town after Trump’s Sunday surprise announcement that he would be instituting a “100 percent tariff on any and all Movies coming into our Country that are produced in Foreign Lands. We Want Movies Made In America, Again!” (emphasis and Trumpian capitalization all his).

He also said the movie industry is “Dying a very fast death,” and that the incentives other countries are offering amounts to a “National Security threat.”

We’ve noted before that Trump, is in some ways, right about at least one part of this. FilmLA just released numbers saying on-location shoot days in Los Angeles were down 22.4 percent the first quarter of this year compared to 2024, and the impact to the local job market has been...

‘Draft Day’ Was An Easy Pick For Football Fan Kevin Costner
Kevin Costner in Le Pari: Draft Day (2014)
Image Source: Amazon With the 2025 NFL Draft only A few weeks away and the pre-draft hype machine operating at maximum capacity, perhaps that’s why the 2014 film Draft Day has suddenly become one of the top-streaming movies on Netflix. Kevin Costner starred as the general manager of the NFL’s Cleveland Browns franchise who was struggling with internal and external pressure as he tried to determine the team’s draft picks. The film was made with the league’s full cooperation, including a role for NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, playing himself, so the film conveys a behind-the-scenes authenticity that fans have grown to appreciate. As for Costner, who’d already made several baseball-themed movies, including Bull Durham and Field of Dreams, starring in a football-oriented film felt completely natural, since he’s always been a big fan of the game. Netflix, Prime Video to present NFL tripleheader on Christmas
Image
Building on a successful 2024, the NFL is adding yet another game to its Christmas Day slate in 2025.

Jay-Z Claims Now Dismissed Rape Case Cost Him $20M In Lost Income; Was Timed To Embarrass Daughter Blue Ivy At ‘Mufasa’ Premiere
Image
The lawsuit accusing Jay-Z and Sean “Diddy” Combs of repeatedly raping a minor in 2000 after the MTV VMAs was dismissed on Valentine’s Day, but the bitter relationship between the Jay-Z and attorney Tony Buzbee rages on.

Filed four days before the Buzbee-represented Jane Doe “voluntarily dismissed with prejudice” her claims, Jay-Z (aka Shawn Carter) made a declaration in the docket of Los Angeles Superior Court ripping the Texas-based attorney. Rejecting Buzbee’s attempt to have the Roc Nation boss’ defamation and extortion suit essentially gutted, Jay-Z’s February 10 filing says the “career-ending” accusations of assaulting a 13-year-old girl unsurprisingly damaged his business and his family — the former to the tune of $20 million a year.

While not mentioning the NFL, with which Roc Nation has a recently renewed Super Bowl Halftime Show deal, Jay-Z’s declaration makes clear that even if the Roger Goodell-run league was standing by him,...

The NFL’s Star-Studded Super Bowl Commercial Will Lead a Push for Girls Flag Football (Exclusive)
Image
The National Football League will use its biggest platform of the year to serve as a high-profile push for girls flag football, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

During each year’s Super Bowl, the league reserves a couple of minutes of TV time for its own brand campaign, celebrating the players and causes most important to the league. NFL CMO Tim Ellis tells THR in an interview that the league uses the spot to “transcend the game” and “create a big, bold, inspiring piece of creative that serves as a force for good from the NFL.”

For Super Bowl Lix this year, the league’s star-packed two-minute commercial uses a comedic tone to spotlight on girls flag football, as part of the NFL’s effort to grow the sport around the world. The spot is a riff on classic high school comedies, with NFL veteran and ESPN host Pat McAfee...

The Big Game in the Big Easy: A History of the Super Bowl in New Orleans
Image
There is always, locals say, something going on in New Orleans. This weekend, it’s the Super Bowl. For the 11th time, the Big Easy will play host to the Big Game, adding another chapter in a long legacy of on-field drama and off-field debauchery.

New Orleans hosted its first Super Bowl on Jan. 11, 1970: Super Bowl IV, featuring the Kansas City Chiefs and the Minnesota Vikings. The Super Bowl was a new invention at the time, a true crossover event between the dueling American Football League and National Football Leagues.

Donald Trump will be swooping into Super Bowl Lix on Sunday as the first sitting president to ever attend the NFL’s big game in person and he predicts a good time will be had by all.

“Two great Quarterbacks in this game,” the former owner of the Usfl’s New Jersey Generals said online Friday morning of Patrick Mahomes of two-time returning champs the Kansas City Chiefs and the 2018 winners the Philadelphia Eagles’ Jalen Hurts before their face-off in New Orleans on February 9. “Also, an unbelievable running back, and the absolute best tight end in football (Ever!). Incredible coaching.”

“Anyway, It Will Be A Great Game!!!” Trump went on to say before taking his daily swipe at his predecessor Joe Biden. “I’ll be doing the interview, before the game, at 3:00 P.M. There hasn’t been one in four years.”

Patrick Mahomes Debunks Trump’s Weird Lie About His College Career

Donald Trump will become the first sitting president to attend the Super Bowl on Sunday, and he’s spent the run-up to the big game talking out of his ass about the game that famously spurned him when he tried to buy a team in the 1980s.

Trump threw a nod to Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) on Wednesday while signing an executive order intended to ban trans women from competing in women’s sports, claiming that when Tuberville was a college football coach, “his quarterback was Mahomes” and that Tuberville...

Jimmy Fallon Reveals Eagles’ Plan to Stop Patrick Mahomes: ‘Having a Guy With Bird Flu Lick His Mouth Guard’ | Video
Image
Jimmy Fallon has the inside scoop on how the Philadelphia Eagles could beat the Kansas City Chiefs at this weekend’s Super Bowl. The NBC host shared his definitely real big game scoop with his studio audience on Wednesday night.

“The Eagles have spent two weeks making a plan to stop Patrick Mahomes. So far, their best idea is having a guy with bird flu lick his mouth guard,” Fallon said.

This upcoming Sunday marks the Chiefs’ third appearance in a row at the Super Bowl. Previously, the team won the NFL championship in the 2022 and 2023 seasons. If they win on Sunday, they’ll become the first team in league history to win the Super Bowl three times in a row, a feat Fallon said was more rare “than seeing an empty vegetable platter at a Super Bowl party.”

The late night host also used his opening monologue to address a football-related conspiracy.

NFL doubles down on creator spotlights with a Kai Cenat vs IShowSpeed Super Bowl pre-game
Image
The NFL has dropped a bunch of creator news this week. The league has long been cozy with YouTube, but now it’s tapped the platform as the official sponsor for its annual Super Bowl Tailgate Concert–and, on top of that, it’s working with YouTube to launch Access Pass for Legends, which will give NFL players and content creators permission to use high-quality NFL footage in their videos without fear of being demonetized.

So, what now?

Well, it’s tagged in two of the world’s biggest creators–Kai Cenat and IShowSpeed–to go head-to-head in an official NFL flag football match that’ll stream on the NFL’s YouTube channel the day before Super Bowl Lix.

In an announcement video, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell rings up IShowSpeed.

YouTube cozies closer to the NFL, replacing TikTok as Super Bowl tailgate sponsor
Image
YouTube is getting even cozier with the NFL. The platform and league have a longstanding relationship that’s accelerated in recent years, with YouTube snapping up a decade’s worth of rights to NFL Sunday Ticket–and, just this week, announcing the launch of Access Pass for Legends, which aims to put former NFL players on the fast-track to becoming “media moguls” on YouTube.

Now, YouTube is taking over from TikTok as the official sponsor for the NFL’s pre-Super Bowl event, the Tailgate Concert.

It’ll produce the two-and-a-half-hour pregame “just steps away” from the Caesars Superdome, where the Kansas City Chiefs are set to take on the Philadelphia Eagles–and the whole thing will be broadcast live from the NFL’s YouTube channel.

The Tailgate Concert began as an annual tradition back in 2021, when the NFL–like pretty much everyone else–was looking for a long-distance way to keep fans connected.

YouTube Takes Over Super Bowl ‘Tailgate Concert’ From TikTok, Slates Post Malone Livestream Shortly Before Kickoff
Image
The NFL’s “Tailgate Concert,” an annual Super Bowl Sunday event first held in 2021, is shifting from TikTok to YouTube for this year’s edition.

YouTube and the NFL announced Post Malone as the headliner of this year’s livestream. The pop star is expected to take the stage a bit less than three hours before kickoff of the February 9 contest at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.

The NFL and YouTube have been increasingly connected in recent years. In 2022, the Google-owned video giant signed a multi-billion-dollar deal to carry the league’s Sunday Ticket package. Roger Goodell, the league’s commissioner, appeared at the company’s Brandcast event for advertisers in 2023 to tout the partnership.

TikTok, meanwhile, remains hugely popular but has hit something of a limbo state after Congress passed a law banning the Chinese app, with Apple and Android keeping it out of their stores. The...

‘The Object Of The Game’: Bill Belichick, Tony Romo, Mike Tomlin, Urban Meyer, Sean McVay & More Take Part In Gridiron Doc About Inspirational High School Coach; Watch Teaser
Image
Exclusive: Football royalty including Bill Belichick, Tony Dungy, Mike Tomlin, Urban Meyer, Roger Goodell, Sean McVay, and Tony Romo are among talking heads in new gridiron documentary The Object Of The Game.

Recently wrapped, the film is inspired by the book of the same name written by legendary high school football coach Chuck “Chico” Kyle (pictured below) in which he imparts wisdom about why the game is played. You can see a first teaser above.

The doc sees Shakespeare and Chaucer teacher Kyle wrapping up his 50th and final year at inner city Cleveland, Ohio’s Saint Ignatius High School. A humble teacher first, Kyle would sooner regale you with Macbeth and Othello quotes from memory than mention he engineered the greatest high school football dynasty the country has ever seen—winning an impressive 11 big school state championships and four national titles over a dominant 20 year span—and in the process,...

On December 25, 2024, at Nrg Stadium in her hometown of Houston, Queen Bey delivered a 13-minute performance that left fans reeling and critics talking. Dressed in an all-white, cowboy-inspired outfit by Roberto Cavalli, complete with a hat that screamed “Yeehaw, but make it fashion,” she made her grand entrance on a white horse, setting the tone for an unforgettable show.

But while the performance, now streaming as Beyoncé Bowl on Netflix, won hearts, it stirred its fair share of controversy. While some questioned whether Beyoncé leaned too far into spectacle and not enough into the holiday spirit, others felt Netflix’s collaboration with the NFL was a little extra. Plus, let’s not forget the inevitable debates over the setlist, her Houston nods,...

Tina Knowles Calls Criticism Of Beyoncé’s Christmas Halftime Show “Mind-Boggling”
Image
Although Beyoncé has rarely been known to give her haters the time of day, her mom has her back.

Following the 32x Grammy winner’s A Cowboy Carter Christmas halftime show at the Houston Texans-Baltimore Ravens game, Tina Knowles shared a fan’s post that stated “people will always, Always, always have some negative ish to say” about her daughter.
