Frank Troy

Far from the Madding Crowd | Review
Adapted from Thomas Hardy's 1874 novel, Thomas Vinterberg's Far from the Madding Crowd follows Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan) as she attempts to dissuade three cliched male suitors who seem to be ripped from the pages of trashy romance novels. Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts) is a monstrously rugged yet broodingly sensitive sheep farmer; William Boldwood (Michael Sheen) is a wealthy yet socially awkward, 40-year-old bachelor; and Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge) is a sexually confident and arrogant sergeant.

Matthias Schoenaerts Talks Far From The Madding Crowd and Farming Boot Camp
Far from the Madding Crowd’s Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts) is basically every girl’s dream guy. He’s kind, loyal, ambitious and love animals. Trouble is, when he proposes to Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan), she’s got ambitions of her own and they’re more in line with running a successful farm, not getting married and settling down. However, soon enough, her priorities change and she starts to consider not one but three potential suitors, Mr. Oak, the cocky soldier Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge) and the wealthy farm owner Michael Boldwood (Michael Sheen). With Far from the Madding Crowd currently in select theaters, I got the opportunity to sit down with Schoenaerts to discuss the challenge of playing an all-around good guy. We also talked about what he learned at farming boot camp, the sheep belly puncturing scene and more. You can catch it all in the video interview below and,...

Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Anna Camp, Hana Mae Lee, Chrissie Fit, Hailee Steinfeld, Alexis Knapp, and Ester Dean in Pitch Perfect 2 (2015)
5 must-watch May cinema releases: Mad Max, Spooks, Pitch Perfect 2
Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Anna Camp, Hana Mae Lee, Chrissie Fit, Hailee Steinfeld, Alexis Knapp, and Ester Dean in Pitch Perfect 2 (2015)
It's blockbuster season, and this month is upping the ante. Last month, we had epics like Fast & Furious 7, and Avengers: Age of Ultron, and now we're seeing the return of our favourite aca-bitches, the Barden Bellas, in Pitch Perfect 2.

On the flip side, the 30-year wait for a new Mad Max is over, as Tom Hardy steps up to the (probably spike-addled) plate in Fury Road.

Release diary: What movies are coming out in 2015?

Digital Spy rounds up the films you can't miss this May...

1. Far From the Madding Crowd

Release date: May 1

Why you should see it: Based on the beloved novel from Thomas Hardy, Carey Mulligan stars as Bathsheba Everdene, a headstrong Victorian lady who must decide between three suitors. Starring alongside her are Michael Sheen as the debonair William Boldwood, Tom Sturridge as the passionate Sergeant Frank Troy, and Matthias Schoenaerts as the charming Gabriel Oak.

Michael Sheen Talks Far From The Madding Crowd and Alice Through The Looking Glass
Carey Mulligan leads Thomas Vinterberg’s adaptation of the classic Thomas Hardy novel Far from the Madding Crowd as Bathsheba Everdene. She’s a headstrong, independent woman who’s determined to defy the odds and run a successful farm, but she becomes a bit distracted by the three men vying for her heart. There’s the noble farmer Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), the cocky soldier Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge), and the more mature and especially wealthy William Boldwood (Michael Sheen). Boldwood can’t compete with Mr. Oak’s farming knowhow or Sgt. Troy’s swordsmanship, but Sheen has no trouble selling Boldwood as a kind man who genuinely wants to make Bathsheba happy, putting him in the running just as much as anyone. While in New York City ahead of the Far from the Madding Crowd May 1st limited release, I got the opportunity to talk to Sheen about his experience working on the film.

Watch: Far From The Madding Crowd Cast Makes 19th Century Dating Profiles
Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan) may be looking for love in the 19th century, but Thomas Vinterberg’s (The Hunt) adaptation of the classic Thomas Hardy novel Far from the Madding Crowd still feels surprisingly relevant. Bathsheba is an independent, career driven woman who suddenly finds herself with three men vying for her hand in marriage, a sheep farmer (Matthias Schoenaerts), a cocky solider (Tom Sturridge) and a wealthy farm owner (Michael Sheen). All three have pros and cons so while in New York City promoting the upcoming release, I opted to find out how Schoenaerts and Sheen would sell Mr. Oak and Boldwood in modern times - by creating an online dating profile. Find out what they said and what Mulligan thinks Bathsheba should have on her own page in the video below, and be sure to keep an eye out for my full interviews with all three as we...

Which scene did Carey Mulligan want cut from Far from the Madding Crowd?
Michael Sheen
Thomas Hardy's Far from the Madding Crowd returns to the big screen this week with Carey Mulligan taking on the role of heroine Bathsheba Everdene.

Spirited and headstrong, Bathsheba finds herself caught between a number of suitors: farmer Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), middle-aged bachelor William Boldwood (Michael Sheen) and reckless soldier Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge).

Mulligan's brilliant lead turn sees her break into song for the third time in her big screen career (after Shame and Inside Llewyn Davis), duetting with Michael Sheen on folk tune 'Let No Man Steal Your Thyme'.

However, Mulligan joked to Digital Spy that she wanted the scene cut from the film.

"I always get nervous about singing, so there was a singing scene that I campaigned to get cut out the film," she said. "I was rejected!

"It's not my thing, it's always a bit nerve-wracking, but I got to work with Michael Sheen...

Tom Sturridge interview: Best friend of Robert Pattinson on starring in Far from the Madding Crowd and grabbing people's crotches
Tom Sturridge is an actor who’s so far been better known for his relationships with his fiancée, Sienna Miller, and his best friend, Robert Pattinson, than for his own acting CV, but that could all change this week with two high-profile projects. He’s starring in a new film version of Thomas Hardy’s classic, Far from the Madding Crowd, as Sergeant Frank Troy, the love interest of Carey Mulligan’s Bathsheba, and he’s also playing opposite Damian Lewis and John Goodman in the new revival of David Mamet’s play American Buffalo.

Passions Run High In New Trailer For Far From The Madding Crowd
I have said it before and I will say it again: the novels of Thomas Hardy are perfect for contemporary cinema, as they’re tales of passion and self-destruction with an underlying social criticism and, sometimes, very unhappy endings. Far from the Madding Crowd might be Hardy’s “happiest” (read: least depressing) novel of the bunch, so it’s no wonder that it has been made into several films already. The latest adaptation, however, comes to us courtesy of director Thomas Vinterburg (The Hunt) and stars Casey Mulligan as the passionate and independent heroine, Bathsheba Everdene.

The story tells of how Bathsheba inherits a farm that she proposes to run for herself, defying social convention and gender restrictions. She’s brilliant, but she’s also willful and vain, and attracts three very different suitors for her hand: Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), an honest but down-on-his-luck sheep farmer; Frank Troy, a...

Following the first trailer that debuted in November, Fox Searchlight Pictures has released the second trailer for Far from the Madding Crowd. Watch: Carey Mulligan Juggles Matthias Schoenaerts & Other Lovers In The New ‘Far From The Madding Crowd’ Trailer

Carey Mulligan Captivates In First Trailer For Far From The Madding Crowd
With the popularity of Victorian and Edwardian melodramas right now, I’m surprised that there have not been more current big-screen versions of Thomas Hardy’s novels. Luckily, director Thomas Vinterberg (The Hunt) is going some way to rectifying that in his production of Far From the Madding Crowd, starring Carey Mulligan and Matthias Schoenaerts. In the first trailer for the film, Mulligan’s beauty vies with the English countryside for captivating qualities, and it’s a toss-up which one wins.

Far From the Madding Crowd features Mulligan as Bathsheba Everdene, a headstrong young woman who takes over a farm to run on her own account. She quickly attracts three suitors: Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), a sheep farmer who belatedly comes to work on Bathsheba’s farm; Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge), a handsome but venal Sergeant; and William Boldwood (Michael Sheen), a wealthy bachelor with a stolid exterior that conceals a passionate soul.

Far From The Madding Crowd Trailer and Poster Featuring Carey Mulligan, Tom Sturridge and Michael Sheen In a Period Romance
Far From the Madding Crowd looks like it falls firmly in Fox Searchlight's wheelhouse (in the period film way, not the quirky indie way), which seems like a good thing in this case. The Thomas Hardy adaptation stars Carey Mulligan, Michael Sheen, Matthias Schoenaerts, (who you can currently see in The Drop) and Tom Sturridge (Effie Gray) and looks like one of those gorgeous high caliber pieces I'll never see on my own, but will be glad I did once someone else drags me to it. Carey Mulligan, Matthias Schoenaerts In ‘Far From The Madding Crowd': Hot Trailer
Thomas Vinterberg
Above is the first trailer for Thomas Vinterberg’s return to English-language filmmaking, Far From The Madding Crowd. Carey Mulligan plays Bathsheba with Matthias Schoenaerts as Oak, Tom Sturridge as Troy and Michael Sheen as Boldwood. Watch: Trailer for 'Far from the Madding Crowd' Starring Carey Mulligan
There was some hope Fox Searchlight would release Thomas Vinterberg's Far from the Madding Crowd some time this year, but as of now they've set a May 1, 2015 release for the adaptation of Thomas Hardy's classic piece of literature, though I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see that date shift a bit if they decide to take it to Cannes... though I think we can most certainly expect a Sundance premiere. Must Watch: Trailer for Vinterberg's 'Far From the Madding Crowd'
"I'm not going to tell stories just to please you." Wow, this looks stunning. Fox Searchlight UK has debuted a trailer for Danish filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg's adaptation of Thomas Hardy's classic romantic story Far From the Madding Crowd, and it looks magnificent. Carey Mulligan stars as Bathsheba Everdene (no relation to Katniss), who captures the eyes and hearts of three men in this love story: Tom Sturridge as Frank Troy, Michael Sheen as William Boldwood, and Matthias Schoenaerts as Gabriel Oak. Aside from compelling performances, the cinematography by Dp Charlotte Bruus Christensen is gorgeous. Back in 1967, Julie Christie starred as Bathsheba and now it's Carey Mulligan's turn to woo us. This looks fantastic. Here's the first trailer for Thomas Vinterberg's Far From the Madding Crowd, direct from YouTube: For reference, the trailer for the original 1967 film Far From the Madding Crowd starring Julie Christie: Based...

Teaser for Thomas Vinterberg’s ‘Far from the Madding Crowd’, with Carey Mulligan and Matthias Schoenaerts
Thomas Vinterberg adapts Thomas Hardy with Far from the Madding Crowd, and a teaser trailer for the May 2015 release has now been released. Carey Mulligan stars as independent-minded Bathsheba Everdene, who finds herself attracting three very different male suitors: sheep farmer Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), Sergent Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge), and prosperous, older bachelor William Boldwood (Michael Sheen). Juno Temple also co-stars in this exploration of relationships and resilience.

There have been many film and TV adaptations of Hardy’s novel, with the 1967 version by director John Schlesinger – which starred Julie Christie, Terence Stamp, Peter Finch and Alan Bates – being the most beloved, so Vinterberg has his work cut out for him. This is his first English language feature since 2004′s Dear Wendy, though Fox Searchlight’s trailer makes an effort to promote Far from the Madding Crowd as from the filmmaker behind Oscar nominee The Hunt. He’s far from the Dogme crowd now.

Top Ten Most Anticipated Movies of 2014
It's become quite obvious what draws me to the theater more than anything, the work of directors I've come to admire, appreciate and expect great things from. Certainly a film's subject matter adds to that excitement, but most often it's because the directors I most anticipate tell stories I most want to see brought to life. However, what today's list of my top ten most anticipated movies of 2014 illustrates is that even when the subject matter isn't necessarily something in my immediate wheelhouse, the thought of a new movie from one of my favorite directors makes such subject matter immediately more interesting. Or, as in the case with one particular film on this list, the subject matter, the development of the film itself and the talent involved makes it an obvious choice for my top ten, which we'll get to right now... If you've missed any of the previous installments...

First Pictures of Mulligan and Schoenaerts in Vinterberg's 'Far from the Madding Crowd'
Thomas Vinterberg wowed audiences with his new film The Hunt (read my review) all the way back at last year's Cannes Film Festival and now its a major contender for Oscar's Best Foreign Language Feature this year and the director is already back to work with Far from the Madding Crowd starring Carey Mulligan, Matthias Schoenaerts, Michael Sheen, Tom Sturridge and Juno Temple. This morning Empire has premiered the first three pictures from the film, which is bsed on the literary classic by Thomas Hardy, telling the story Bathsheba Everdene (Mulligan), who attracts three very different suitors: Gabriel Oak (Schoenaerts), a sheep farmer, captivated by her fetching willfulness; Frank Troy (Sturridge), a handsome and reckless Sergeant; and William Boldwood (Sheen), a prosperous and mature bachelor. Bathsheba's choices and passions explore the nature of relationships and love - as well as the human ability to overcome hardships through resilience and perseverance.

Terence Stamp, Julie Christie, and Peter Finch in Loin de la foule déchaînée (1967)
First Look At Far From The Madding Crowd
Terence Stamp, Julie Christie, and Peter Finch in Loin de la foule déchaînée (1967)
Although Thomas Hardy was hard at work on his novels when cinema was still in its cot, his work has a distinctly cinematic quality. His rolling countrysides, strapping woodsmen and doomed love affairs have been the stuff of a thousand big-screen romances, not to mention one or two noteworthy adaptations of their own. The latest to dive into 19th century Wessex is Thomas Vinterberg, who's following in John Schlesinger and Stephen Frears' wellie steps in bringing Hardy's most successful novel Far From The Madding Crowd to the screen. These new stills major on Carey Mulligan as Bathsheba Everdene, the Hunger Gamesy-sounding heroine of the tale. Look out, too, for Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), a sheep farmer smitten by her charms, and Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge), an equally lovestruck soldier.Adapted by One Day novelist David Nicholls, Far From The Madding Crowd is the story of an independent, beautiful and...

Five’s a Crowd; Mulligan, Schoenaerts, Sheen, Sturridge & Temple Join Vinterberg’s Far From the Madding Crowd
Sometimes in the film buz you get a second chance to make a great second impression. It took one critically-lauded, unexpected (it was the surprise inclusion at the Cannes film festival in 2012) hit in the award-winning (Best Actor for Mads Mikkelsen) The Hunt to put Thomas Vinterberg on the right side of the tracks again. 98′s The Celebration was all the talk and his follow up critically bashed projects such as It’s All About Love and Dear Wendy took the helmer out of circulation. Now Fox Searchlight Pictures announced that Vinterberg has begun shooting on the U.K shot Far From the Madding Crowd which sees Carey Mulligan, Matthias Schoenaerts, Michael Sheen, Tom Sturridge and one of the busiest actresses in Juno Temple make up the crowd. The film will shoot on location in Dorset, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and London. DNA Films’ Allon Reich and Andrew Macdonald are producing. Look...

J. Edgar (Warner Bros.) Director Clint Eastwood provides a rock-solid, albeit rather flat portrait of polarizing FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, covering his life from late teens to his death. Leonardo DiCaprio does an impressive turn as Hoover, never crossing the line into caricature, and creating a Hoover that is all too human, making for an all the more unsettling look at absolute power run amuck. Where the film stumbles is the love story at its core: Hoover’s relationship with longtime aide Clyde Tolson (Armie Hammer). In the hands of an openly-gay director like Gus Van Sant, this could have been a heartbreaking, tender story of forbidden (unrequited?) love, but Eastwood seems to tiptoe around their romance, with far too much delicacy and deference. The film works well when recreating the famous crimes and investigations which Hoover made his name on (the Lindbergh kidnapping,...
