Directors Guild Deal With Studios Draws Mixed Response As Members Review Details
Image
Early responses are beginning to come in regarding the details of the Directors Guild of America’s deal with studios and streamers, which were revealed on Wednesday night.

Amid a Writers Guild of America strike, and as performers’ union SAG-AFTRA negotiates with entertainment companies represented by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers following its own strike authorization, the DGA reached a tentative pact it called “historic.” Some of its members aren’t so sure.

During a Zoom meeting to explain the deal to membership on Thursday, DGA leadership justified the timing of the pact, struck on June 3. “We went as late as one could go within our window” and negotiated for one day later than planned, one guild executive told The Hollywood Reporter, seemingly addressing criticism that the DGA pulled the trigger too quickly rather than holding out for more leverage.

Guild negotiations team members acknowledged that the...

400 Female Writers & Showrunners Call On Major Studios To Take Action To Protect Workers In Anti-Abortion States
Image
More than 400 prominent female writers and showrunners sent a letter today to the heads of the major studios expressing their “grave concerns” about the companies’ “lack of specific production protocols” to protect their workers in anti-abortion states.

The letters, which state that “it is unacceptable to ask any person to choose between their human rights and their employment,” also demanded that the companies “pledge to discontinue all political donations to anti-abortion candidates and political action committees immediately.”

Deadline has obtained a copy of the letter to Netflix, which organizers say was sent to top executives at Amazon Studios, AMC Networks, Apple, Disney, Lionsgate, NBCUniversal, Netflix, Paramount Global, , and Warner Bros. Discovery.

The letters, whose signers include Ava DuVernay, Shonda Rhimes, Amy Schumer, Marta Kauffman, Callie Khouri, WGA West vice president Michele Mulroney and WGA West secretary-treasurer Betsy Thomas, said that “this situation raises basic matters of equality, health, and safety in the workplace.

Jordan Fisher and Talia Ryder in Hello, adieu, et nous au milieu (2022)
Why Making ‘Hello, Goodbye and Everything in Between’ Felt Like ‘Free Relationship Therapy’ for Jordan Fisher and Talia Ryder
Jordan Fisher and Talia Ryder in Hello, adieu, et nous au milieu (2022)
Almost everyone can identify with the “make or break” moment in a relationship, which makes the new Netflix film “Hello, Goodbye, and Everything in Between” nearly universal in its potential reach — the film’s entire plot revolves around that crucial moment. And for stars Jordan Fisher and Talia Ryder, delving that deeply into a relationship’s breaking point meant they needed to get to know each other incredibly fast.

Based on the book by Jennifer E. Smith, the story chronicles Aidan (Fisher) and Claire’s (Ryder) last night together before Claire leaves for college the next day. The couple had originally begun their relationship with the understanding that they’d break up before heading into this next chapter, and on one last epic date, Aidan reminds Claire of all their special moments together, bringing them to revisit the highs and lows of their relationship. ‘Along for the Ride’ Filmmaker Sofia Alvarez on the Netflix Rom-Com’s ‘Very Real’ Ending
Sofia Alvarez
As soon as filmmaker Sofia Alvarez read the Sarah Dessen novel “Along for the Ride,” she immediately envisioned a movie adaptation.

“I really grew up loving those summer teen movies where you could feel the weather or like you could feel the air conditioning was too cold,” Alvarez told TheWrap during an interview about her film adaptation, which she wrote and directed. “You could feel the humidity and smell the sunscreen through the screen and I just thought ‘Along for the Ride’ has the potential to be one of those summer movies.’”

“Along for the Ride” tells the story of Auden West (who is played in the film by Emma Pasarow), who is one summer away from heading to Defriese University. Auden’s parents split up when she was younger, and she lived with her mom (Andie MacDowell) through high school, but for the summer she decides to visit Colby,...

How ‘Along for the Ride’ Stars Developed Their Onscreen Relationship for the Netflix YA Adaptation
Belmont Cameli and Emma Pasarow in En route pour l'avenir (2022)
In the new Netflix feature film adaptation of “Along for the Ride,” based on the novel by author Sarah Dessen, stars Emma Pasarow and Belmont Cameli fell into a pretty natural rhythm of acting out their characters’ budding relationship. But one thing the actor and actress were not on the same page about was the food fight scene.

When Auden (Pasarow) meets Eli (Cameli), he proposes a quest of daring activities to Auden — especially things she’s never tried before — and one of the items on her list includes starting a food fight. Fast forward quite a bit, and Auden’s wish comes true, with a fun story behind the filming of the scene.

“The food fight was absolutely insane. We shot until the sun rose in the morning. For continuity purposes, for timing restrictions, we could only do one take of [Belmont] pouring the beans on my head,” Pasarow said...

Along for the Ride review – Netflix teen romance is missing a spark
Lana Condor in À tous les garçons que j'ai aimés (2018)
The latest film from To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before scribe Sofia Alvarez hits the beats of a rom-com without much heart or heat

To All the Boys I Loved Before, the 2018 Netflix YA hit that launched a franchise and in-house star in Noah Centineo, was integral to the platform’s revival of the rom-com for a reason: it had the ineffable “it” factor. The film, written by Sofia Alvarez and based on the novel by Jenny Han, updated the best of teen romance tropes to the present – awkward yet attractive girl, charismatic yet sensitive Romeo, harmless frenemies; insular school traditions, thwarted flirtations, a good dose of heart and a larger helping of heat. On a streaming platform full of background movies, the first To All the Boys was refreshingly fun to watch.

Along for the Ride, the new Netflix teen romance written and directed by Alvarez, misses that spark.

‘Along for the Ride’ Review: Netflix Dips Into the Sarah Dessen Library for Its Next Sweet YA Romance
Image
For a certain subset of younger readers, bestselling author Sarah Dessen’s books — mostly sweet teen romances about nice kids working out their problems and falling in love in the process, typically set in and around Dessen’s adopted home state of North Carolina — are must-reads. For nearly three decades, Dessen has been churning out her novels to, if not always strong acclaim, at least good sales and a dedicated fanbase.

And yet, until Netflix picked up options for a trio of Dessen’s books back in 2019, the author’s back catalog of inoffensive charmers scarcely got the movie treatment. Back in 2003, two of her books were turned into the Mandy Moore vehicle “How to Deal,” but it’s taken almost two decades for Dessen to get another crack at the screen. Netflix, which has given new life to the exact kind of fare Dessen writes — from the darling to...

Lana Condor
‘To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You’ Review (Netflix)
Lana Condor
Stars: Lana Condor, Noah Centineo, Emilija Baranac, Jordon Fisher | Written by Sofia Alvarez, J. Mills Goodloe | Directed by Michael Fimognari

In 2018 Netflix came out with an original movie based on a young-adult novel by Jenny Han called To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. It was a charming, whimsical teen rom-com that was a genuinely good film. It did very well, too, and so they’ve released a sequel, based on the sequel book by Han. Directed by Michael Fimognari (who directed the first film too) and with screenplay penned by Sofia Alvarez and J. Mills Goodloe, P.S. I Still Love You continues the story of Lara Jean, her life, her love and everything in-between.

We revisit Lara Jean, played with a sparky energy by the talented Lana Condor, who is in the early stages of a relationship with Peter (Noah Centineo) and still learning what it means to be in her first relationship.

‘To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You’ Review: Netflix’s Charming Ya Franchise Gets a Bigger, Better Sequel
Lana Condor in À tous les garçons que j'ai aimés (2018)
Lara Jean Song Covey has always had a way with words. That’s precisely what started the action in Netflix’s winning 2018 teen rom-com “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before,” which offered a contemporary twist on the Cyrano mythos with a hefty dose of the ever-popular “let’s be fake boyfriend and girlfriend” storyline that has driven many a big screen high school romance. Based on Jenny Han’s young adult novel trilogy, that film hinged on the release of a pack of love letters written by romance-obsessed Lara Jean (budding star Lana Condor), who poured her heart out on the page, never expecting that any of the objects of her affection would ever receive her missives. Well, they did, and thus Netflix’s first great Ya film franchise was born, one that gets a charming update in the film’s first of two planned sequels, which find Lara...
