The Big Cigar TV Review
Image
Plot: The incredible true story of Hollywood revolution meeting social revolution: it’s a wild caper of Black Panther founder Huey Newton escaping from the FBI to Cuba with the help of famed producer Bert Schneider in an impossibly elaborate plan – involving a fake movie production — that goes wrong every way it possibly can. And somehow, it’s all true. Mostly.

Review: The stories of revolutionary political figures and social reformers have been popular for big and small screen adaptations for decades. There seems to be more focus on the 1960s and 1970s than any other period in American history. The 2021 film Judas and the Black Messiah looked at controversial figure Fred Hampton, while this year’s Shirley chronicled Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm’s run for United States President. While these and the stories of Martin Luther King Jr and Malcolm X have made for acclaimed productions, the story of Black...

Every Poker Face Episode, Ranked
Image
Peacock's comedy crime drama Poker Face applies a fresh twist on the whodunit trope while also reviving the traditional murder-of-the-week concept from TV's past. The series follows Charlie (Natasha Lyonne), a casino worker who can instantly tell whenever anyone is lying. After the events of the first episode, Charlie is sent on the run; each week, she finds herself working a different job and getting tangled up in a different murder mystery.

Created by Rian Johnson, Poker Face feels like a continuation of his quest to shake up the mystery genre after his success in writing and directing Knives Out and Glass Onion. The show subverts the whodunit trope by dedicating the first part of each episode to depicting that week's murder, with most of the tension coming from how exactly Charlie will unravel the mystery.

Peacock’s ‘Poker Face’ Will Submit as a Comedy at the Emmy Awards (Exclusive)
Image
No lie, “Poker Face” will enter the Emmy awards race as a comedy. The show is an hour-long whodunit but also contains plenty of comedic elements, which is why Peacock has decided to enter it in that lane. News comes as awards consultants across town make the final decision on where to place their programs, as the Television Academy officially opens this year’s Emmy submissions starting Feb. 21.

For example, on Friday, Variety exclusively reported that HBO’s “The White Lotus” would submit in the drama space, after the TV Academy ruled that it no longer qualified as a limited series (due to the return of star Jennifer Coolidge)

In the case of “Poker Face,” the decision to enter in comedy comes as the show continues earn strong reviews from critics. “Poker Face” is currently “99% certified fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite its whodunit nature, insiders note that Lyonne is widely...

Rian Johnson’s Poker Face TV Review
Image
Plot: A 10-episode mystery-of-the-week series following Natasha Lyonne’s Charlie, who has an extraordinary ability to determine when someone is lying. She hits the road with her Plymouth Barracuda and with every stop encounters a new cast of characters and strange crimes she can’t help but solve.

Review: Rian Johnson has transformed his director career, starting with indie darlings like Brick and Looper before jumping to the biggest canvas out there with Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Johnson’s favorite genre has consistently been Mystery, with his Benoit Blanc films Knives Out and Glass Onion becoming massive hits with fans and critics alike. His latest project, Poker Face, continues in the mystery genre with a distinct take on whodunit and crime stories which blends anthology storytelling with a cool wraparound tale led by Natasha Lyonne. Poker Face is a blast from start to finish, with some great direction from...
