It’s called Meetings With Remarkable Manuscripts, by Christopher De Hamel, and it’s about some of the oldest and most beautiful books in the world. These are the kind of books that have a fascinating history, and De Hamel tells us a lot about the past by travelling to see, maybe even touch, them. The Jim Henson Co. is about to resurrect some old fan-favorites for a new generation. The production house -- started by the late "Muppets" creator Jim Henson and now run by his two children -- is reportedly actively developing sequels to 1980s cult hits "Labyrinth" and "The Dark Crystal," along with a new take on "Fraggle Rock," and an Emmet Otter feature. They're also moving forward on the new animated property "Which Witch," with Billy Crystal signed on to write, produce and star. "Witch" is based on Eva Ibbotson’s 1979 book about a contest between wizard and witches, according to a Variety report. Billy Crystal has signed on to write, produce and star in The Jim Henson Co.'s animated adaptation Which Witch.

The project is based on Eva Ibbotson's 1979 novel of the same name, which centers on a wizard who decides to hold a contest for the seven witches of Todcaster, with the winner set to be his new bride.

Jim Henson's son Brian Henson will direct Which Witch and serve as a producer alongside Billy Crystal, Lisa Henson and Samantha Sprecher.

Here's what Billy Crystal had to say about the project in a statement to Variety, where the actor reveals he co-wrote the screenplay with Michael Feldman.

We would say that he's picky, but those films have been the terrible comedies Parental Guidance and Small Apartments. Buried in a recent report at Variety about Billy Crystal joining the Jim Henson Company's production of a movie called Which Witch? is an even more awesomely interesting piece of news.

At the end of the article they list several movies they are currently working on, and those include Fraggle Rock; a sequel to 1982’s The Dark Crystal; a movie based on the Emmet Otter character, and a sequel to 1986’s Labyrinth. This is the first time I've heard about a Labyrinth sequel. There were no other details revealed, but it's exciting to know that it's in the works.

As for the project that Crystal will be working on, it's based on a 1979 book by Eva Ibbotson, the story of which follows a wizard who holds a contest among the seven witches to determine which witch one he will marry. The actor said,

This movie made a quiet release on this side of the pond with very little fanfare as a Halloween season DVD release. Also, this film is by no means a faithful adaptation of Eva Ibbotson’s original novel of the same name, published 1975; that is a shame. This film is easy to share with young ones before going out for trick or treat.

Paul King ("Bunny and the Bull") is set to direct the fantastical adventure story "Island of the Aunts" reports Deadline.

Edna Walsh is adapting the novel by Eva Ibbotson which follows three aunts who spirit away unloved children and take them to a magical island where they’ll find happiness.

The late Ibbotson also penned "The Great Ghost Rescue" which has been adapted for the screen in a film starring Jason Isaacs, Kevin McKidd and Emma Fielding due out later this year.

King is best known for his work with "The Mighty Boosh" and recently directed segments of British comedy series "Come Fly with Me".

Following his work with The Mighty Boosh and his intriguing dalliance with a big screen Paddington Bear movie it appears Paul King has found his next project.

Eva Ibbotson’s book Island of the Aunts is the material King is working on currently, the children’s book appears to have a nicely anarchic twist to it. The Nyt has this summary:

When the kindly old aunts decide that they need help caring for creatures who live on their hidden island, they know that adults can’t be trusted. Enda Walsh will be adapting the screenplay, which follows three aunts who go around the world collecting unhappy children. They bring them back to the Island of the Aunts, where they will be loved forever.

Eva Ibbotson's literature has been compared to Roald Dahl's, and it is suspected that Island of the Aunts will be a mix of live action and animation, similar in style to both The Mighty Boosh and Bunny and the Bull.

The film is being produced by BBC Films, and will be released Overseas sometime in 2012. There are no plans to release Island of the Aunts in the states at this time.

In any event, according to Screen Daily Affinity International has acquired the sales rights heading into Cannes to The Great Ghost Rescue, which is set to begin eight weeks of principal photography in the UK and Hungary next week.

Casting for this kid-friendly slice of spookery thus far includes Georgia Groome, Steven Mackintosh, and newcomer Toby Hall, who will play Humphrey, the ghost of a child whose family has been ousted from their home when their castle gets modernized into a holiday camp.

Yann Samuell (Love Me If You Dare) is on board to direct this big screen adaptation of the Eva Ibbotson book.
