Jake Dunn Is Fiercely Protective of BBC Trans Drama ‘What It Feels Like for a Girl’
Image
“Whenever I work, I’m like, ‘This will be the last time you do that,'” Jake Dunn laughs. “I just can’t believe it.”

His candid disbelief is no surprise when the Nottingham-born star, fresh out of drama school, went straight into filming a Sally Wainwright show. Dunn might be best known to viewers as Thomas in Renegade Nell, Disney+‘s fantasy adventure penned by the Happy Valley creator, which was canceled after one season last year.

“It does give you an understanding,” Dunn continues, “of when something is fizzing and exciting versus when something maybe doesn’t have that same impact on first read.” The 25-year-old would know better than a lot of people — he’s also worked on Jack Rook’s Big Boys, Nick Hamm’s historical epic William Tell and now turns to the BBC Three’s millennial coming-of-age drama based on the memoir by transgender journalist Paris Lees.

Watch Shia Labeouf Spar with Star Toby Kebbell in New Film 'Salvable'
Image
Whatever you think about Shia Labeouf, his intensity and commitment is unquestionable, and he's not afraid to be outspoken. Labeouf's interesting career path was diverted among a variety of scandals and allegations, and you could hardly call it a comeback when he returned in 2023 with the film Padre Pio. Which is a shame, because he gives a great performance, and Abel Ferrara always creates fascinating films. It was perhaps just too niche a movie to give the former Transformers star the spotlight again. That likely won't change with his next movie, Salvable, which recently released its first trailer. You can watch the trailer for the film, also starring Toby Kebbell, below:

The synopsis for Salvable reads as follows:

"Shia Labeouf and Toby Kebbell star in an emotional, action-packed film about a prize fighter’s battles both inside and outside the ring. When a battered boxer past his prime finds his...

Toxic Town on Netflix is such a satisfying and inspiring watch that's worth your time (Review)
Image
Honestly sometimes when there's so many recognizable faces in a new show or movie, that doesn't necessarily mean that the story is good or worth your time. Though I'm happy to say that when it comes to Toxic Town on Netflix, that's definitely not the case! This star-studded cast brought it, with an inspiring story as well. With just four episodes, this series is a quick and satisfying watch if you're looking for something new to fill your time. Let's get into our review. Spoilers Below.

Courtesy: Netflix

The British drama is so well done, including the writing, editing, and pacing of the tale based on true events. Even though the story takes place over the span of 13 years and there's only four episodes, it didn't feel like anything was rushed or missing. It also didn't feel like the episodes were moving too slow either. We got the idea and...

Enter Sam Malik, a defense lawyer known for defending the apparently indefensible. Struggling with personal demons of his own, Sam accepts Justin’s plea for help. For the arrogant yet charming officer loudly denies involvement, even as evidence stacks against him.

Leading the prosecution is Leila Hassoun-Kenny, a determined Cps attorney. And overseeing the investigation, Detective Inspector Miles Southgate leaves no stone unturned seeking justice. As always with Showtrial,...

Image
Eve Hewson, once best known for being Bono's daughter, is becoming famous in her own right as an incredibly talented actress. Eve Hewson may have famous parents, but she's proven with some fantastic TV and movie performances that she's talented all on her own. Paul David Hewson met Alison "Ali" Stewart when they were just teenagers before Paul adopted the stage name "Bono" and became the frontman for U2, one of the most successful bands of all time. Bird (2024)
Jericho Ridge review – shades of Rio Bravo in tense siege thriller with old-timey charm
Bird (2024)
Nikki Amuka-Bird gives a powerful performance as a gritty deputy defending her remote sheriff’s office from armed invaders

There’s an old-timey charm about this, a (mostly) one-location action movie in the tradition of Rio Bravo, or its sort-of remake Assault on Precinct 13. Partly it’s because of the remote mountainous setting in an unnamed state, the log cabin sheriff’s office, the trucks, twangy accents and mentions of second amendment nuts; and partly because of the core device of having a heroic figure – in this case, Deputy Tabby Temple (Nikki Amuka-Bird) – defending the fort against armed invaders. But the joke’s on us because nearly the whole thing was shot in Kosovo and most of the cast is British, as is writer-director Will Gilbey, who is making his feature directorial debut after a long apprenticeship as an editor, writer and second-unit dogsbody on the distinctly estuary-accented Rise of the Footsoldier...

The Best Books Being Adapted for TV in 2023: Sci-fi, Fantasy, Historical and Crime
Image
The ‘Coming Soon to TV’ shelf in your local bookshop will be sagging under the weight of this lot – the thrillers, sci-fi stories, crime novels and non-fiction currently being adapted for television. If you prefer to read ahead before your imagination is sullied by the small screen version, then here’s where to start, from Apple TV+’s adaptation of 1950s-set revenge comedy Lessons in Chemistry and psychological thriller The Crowded Room, to Prime Video’s new Neil Gaiman show Anansi Boys and rumoured Kay Scarpetta series, via Netflix’s true-life opioid drama Painkiller, Itvx/MGM+ historical adventure series The Winter King and many more. Many many more.

It’s too soon to say when we’ll see those planned adaptations below which are yet to film, given the current WGA Writers’ Strike and earth-shifts taking place among the streaming networks whose pile ‘em high, sell ‘em cheap model is proving unsustainable,...

The Gallows Pole True Story – a Legendary UK Crime So Big It Almost Toppled the Economy
Image
Visit Heptonstall graveyard in West Yorkshire and you can expect to see four things: Happy Valley fans, tourists, pens and coins. The former are there to visit the fictional gravesite of Catherine Cawood’s daughter Becky from the BBC thriller, while the tourists are in the habit of leaving the latter – pens on the grave of American poet Sylvia Plath, and coins on the grave of legendary local figure “King” David Hartley.

“There’s never usually more than 20p on David Hartley’s grave,” says Jennifer Reid, a ballad historian who plays pub landlady Barb in a new BBC drama about the famed Yorkshireman. “But when I visited during filming I knew people from London had been up, because there was about £4.50 on there!”

Coins and the London/Yorkshire wealth divide are fundamental to The Gallows Pole, a three-part historical series from filmmaker Shane Meadows. It’s the real-life story...

Shane Meadows in This is England (2006)
Actor Michael Socha: ‘Did I fall in with the wrong people? No, I was the wrong people’
Shane Meadows in This is England (2006)
First cast by Shane Meadows, in This is England, Socha is about to star in the director’s period drama The Gallows Pole. He describes how acting saved him from a life of violence – and why he loves a madcap scheme

In a photographer’s studio in Derby, Michael Socha is wondering what he should wear. He’s got a good jumper on, but he doesn’t like his jeans. He’s brought a couple of shirts from his mum’s, but they need a bit of an iron. No stylist for Socha; he has the busy air of a man who’s popped in between shifts, which he has, sort of. He lives close by, and is always on the go, “here, there and everywhere”. Aside from acting, and family, he practises muay thai and kickboxing. He’s doing his belts. “I’m on brown two for kickboxing at the moment,...
