Filmmakers Milad Alami, Kasper Barfoed and up-and-coming creatives Emma Sehested Høed and Jennifer Vedsted Christiansen are some of the Scandi talents plotting projects for the new Danish production banner Uma Film, formerly Good Company Films.

The Copenhagen-based shingle is run by three pedigreed female producers with a solid track record in Danish drama series and features. Stinna Lassen has produced for the Danish pubcaster Dr their biggest hit in the last six-to-seven years,“Carmen Curlers”, under the spotlight at this week’s Göteborg’s TV Drama Vision as contender for the Nordic Film & TV Fond Prize for best screenplay of a Nordic series. Her earlier productions take in Alami’s acclaimed feature debut “The Charmer” and series “When the Dust Settled.”

Lassen’s colleagues Claudia Saginario and Marie-Louise Gyldenkrone were respectively producer and line producer on another Dr’s smash local and international hit,“Cry Wolf.”

Slamdance Announces 2018 Feature Film Competition Slate, Plus a New Russo Brothers-Backed Prize
Anthony Russo and Joe Russo at an event for Bienvenue à Collinwood (2002)
The Slamdance Film Festival announced today their narrative and documentary feature film competition for its 24th Festival edition, taking place January 19-25, 2018 in Park City. Established in 1995 by a group of filmmakers whose work had been rejected by the Sundance Film Festival, Slamdance is dedicated to fostering a community for independent emerging artists, fashioning itself “the premiere film festival by filmmakers, for filmmakers.”

The feature competition includes 16 premieres, mostly produced in the U.S. All competition films are feature length directorial debuts with budgets of less than $1 million Usd, and without Us distribution. In addition, the festival announced a new partnership with alumni Anthony and Joe Russo (“Captain America: Civil War,” and “Avengers: Infinity War”) to establish the inaugural Russo Fellowship award. Every participating filmmaker will be eligible for a $25,000 cash prize and mentorship from the Russos in the development of the winner’s next project at the brothers’ Los Angeles studio.

Fear Me Not (Film Review)
Fear Me Not, the English title that has been applied to Danish director/co-writer Kristian Levring’s new film (currently playing at the Tribeca Film Festival, and available on-demand from IFC Films in June), is clearly meant to be ironic. But the movie’s original moniker, Den Du Frygter (What You Fear), is even more pointed: While protagonist Mikael Neumann (Ulrich Thomsen) becomes someone to be scared of, it is his own hidden anxieties that push him into that situation.

As the film opens, Mikael has taken a leave of absence from his job and has been spending more time at home with his wife Sigrid (Paprika Steen) and teenage daughter Selma (Emma Sehested Høeg). It’s all very peaceful and Mikael should be content, but he begins to worry that he’s becoming too complacent, that his life is becoming empty and lacks excitement. When his brother-in-law Frederik (Lars Brygmann...

Review by: Bob Doto

Rating: 5.5 out of 10

Fear Me Not is a film about a man who is both a loving father and a disconnected husband. Said father is really unhappy with the way his six-month leave from his career has turned out. His friend (a doctor) hips him to a medical experiment testing drugs for depression. Disenchanted dad wants in. Friend is not so sure about it, but gives in. Things are going fine, but not great (effects are subtle but positive). However, dad, like some of the other patients, starts to experience some of the unforeseen side effects, namely sadism with a touch of emotional detachment. Experiment is called off. Dad secretly keeps up the pill popping. Things turn to not-so-great, but frankly could be worse (more about this later). There’s the necessary climax,...
