Farhan Akhtar’s The Fakir of Venice Turns Sixteen
Image
Farhan Akhtar’s debut movie as an actor, though it released as his third film after Rock On!! And Luck By Chance was The Fakir of Venice. Subhash K Jha takes a look back at the 2009 film.

In his first acting assignment, Farhan Akhtar is splendidly in form as a bit of a jerk. He plays a production controller who can arrange anything a film crew wants, from a monkey performing tricks to an exotic fakir performing monkey tricks.

Adi is okay with supplying anything as long as he gets paid.

The monkey and the monkey tricks are aptly equated in the hugely original, ferociously flawed script (Rajesh Devraj). When Adi is asked by a museum in Venice to produce a fakir who can bury himself completely in the sand for hours, the narrative brings into play the crass touristic culture of peddling exotica to the West.

Annu Kapoor, in...

It starts in London with the European premiere of the fast-paced whodunnit espionage drama Berlin. From writer and director Atul Sabharwal, this compelling spy thriller stars Aparshakti Khurana (Jubilee) as a young sign language teacher lured into the dark world of espionage. Undercover security forces coerce him to interrogate a young deaf man, powerfully played by Ishwak Singh (Rocket Boys), accused of spying. Veteran actor Kabir Bedi also features in a commanding cameo.

“Go For Gold” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Gold

Starring Akshay Kumar, Kunal Kapoor, Amit Sadh, Mouni Roy, Vineet Kumar Singh

Directed by Reema Kagti

There is something to be said about motivational sports films. They make you stand and cheer even when you know the predictable path invariably taken by the genre.

Gold starts off rather roughly, unsure of who the hero of this game-plan is. It is certainly not the boozing Bengali Tapan Das, played in broad strokes bordering on Bong caricature, by Akshay Kumar. So is it Imitiaz Shah, chosen as the first captain of the Indian cricket team? Imtiaz, played with a very peculiar accent by Vineet Kumar Singh, soon crosses the border to Pakistan but is there to cheer for the Indian hockey team in the grand finale in England.
