Biopics are really having a moment right now. While the genre itself is nothing new, biopics seem like an easy way not only to make a lot of money at the box office but to bring home a bunch of trophies during awards season. If you're lucky and/or have the right director at the helm, you can achieve both like with 2023's "Oppenheimer," which grossed close to $1 billion worldwide to become the highest-grossing biopic of all time and took home Best Picture at that year's Academy Awards.
It feels like Hollywood isn't going to let go of this trend anytime soon, and for notable figures who become the subjects of these movies, it's often a chance to have their accomplishments shared with a vast audience. But even if a biopic is largely complimentary, some people just don't like seeing their dirty laundry aired for the world to see.

Winning an Oscar can truly change the trajectory of an actor's career. Naturally, it isn't everything, and some performers do just fine without ever winning an Academy Award. However, taking home the trophy proves that an actor has earned the respect of their peers, and if they play their cards right and make smart business decisions, they can have a very bright future ahead of them.
Jennifer Lawrence became a Hollywood darling in large part thanks to her Best Actress win for "Silver Linings Playbook," and Halle Berry made history as the first Black woman to win the Best Actress statue for her work in "Monster's Ball." It's fascinating to consider what opportunities would've been in store for them had those iconic roles gone to somebody else, and that was almost the case. For those performers and many others, they weren't the first pick for their Oscar-winning roles. Someone else...

It’s hard to believe, but the queen of charming rom-coms and edge-of-your-seat thrillers Sandra Bullock, once strolled into Razzie history like it was her personal red carpet. Back then, she didn’t just take home a Razzie; she made history with the kind of record that still feels impossible to match.

In 2009, the world was introduced to the ‘inspiring’ story of Michael Oher through The Blind Side—the movie that tugged at heartstrings and propelled Sandra Bullock to an Oscar win. It’s the story of a poor, homeless young man named Michael Oher who is taken in by the Tuohy family, most notably Leigh Anne Tuohy, played by Bullock. The film paints a picture of the Tuohys as benevolent figures who help Oher overcome the odds to become a football star. But now, more than two decades later, a dark truth has emerged.

The 2009 biographical sports drama, The Blind Side, ended up working in Sandra Bullock’s favor. The actress who has been absolutely exceptional in all her performances won her first and only Academy Award to date. The film was the talk of the town when it was released. A story of acceptance and second chances, The Blind Side captivated the hearts of its audience and showed us that there really isn’t a bigger superpower than love.

However, Sandra Bullock had her fair share of doubts when it came to saying yes to the film. Why? Well, she simply couldn’t relate to the fictional family she was going to be a part of thanks to their conservative beliefs. I never quite understood the fan craze behind Sandra Bullock until I saw the 2009 rom-com The Proposal, starring Ryan Reynolds and one of the Golden Girls. Her comedic timing was impeccable and she could sing the heck out of Get Low by Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz.

Michael Oher’s real-life story’s far from the feel-good narrative you saw in The Blind Side. While the Sandra Bullock-led movie won hearts and awards, it left Oher feeling trapped in a stereotype he never asked for. Imagine watching a blockbuster about your life and realizing it paints you as someone you barely recognize! Oher had spoken out about how the movie made him look dumb, and the label stuck.

Rotten Tomatoes has been an authority on critical reviews since 1998. The review site offers both critical and audience ratings of movies and TV shows. Anything that has an average of 60% and over of positive reviews is certified fresh, while anything under 60% gets a splat.
Some actors like Nicolas Cage and Adam Sandler have had a horrible Rotten Tomatoes streak for years on end, only to break that streak with one good movie. Whether these performers star in these splats for the promise of a paycheck or because they genuinely thought they were good, their series of bad movies could have tanked their careers. Luckily, they were able to bounce back with a certified fresh movie that set them on a better path.

The Blind Side's resurgence is the perfect reminder to watch Remember the Titans, a superior sports drama that stars Denzel Washington. Remember the Titans focuses on team unity and tackles integration in 1971, though it's only loosely based on real-life events. Unlike The Blind Side, Remember the Titans avoids perpetuating a harmful white savior narrative.
The Blind Side, an incredibly divisive biopic from 2009, is trending on Netflix but the film's sudden resurgence is actually the perfect reminder to watch a superior sports drama that stars Denzel Washington. Written and directed by John Lee Hancock (Saving Mr. Banks), the controversial movie adapts a 2006 book of the same name in order to tell The Blind Side's true story of Michael Oher, an offensive lineman who grew up in the foster-care system. Despite a difficult home life with his biological mother, who's navigating substance-use disorder, Michael leaves his new placements to return home.

Sandra Bullock starred as Leigh Anne Tuohy in The Blind Side, now streaming on Netflix. Bullock won an Oscar for her role in The Blind Side, which is among her best movies, despite recent controversy. The Blind Side's true story is disputed, with Michael Oher filing a lawsuit claiming the Tuohys tricked him into agreeing to a conservatorship.
Sandra Bullock starred in The Blind Side in 2009, and almost 13 years later, it's available to stream on Netflix (coincidentally following a newfound controversy concerning The Blind Side's subjects). Bullock's list of movie credits is quite long and impressive, especially regarding its diversity. She has appeared in multiple popular romantic comedies, Academy-Award-winning dramas (Speed and The Blind Side), and high-grossing blockbusters. Consequently, Bullock is one of Hollywood's highest-paid and renowned actresses.
For The Blind Side, Bullock was nominated for her performance as Leigh Anne Tuohy at the 82nd Academy Awards in 2010 and won.

Michael Oher filed a lawsuit claiming that the depiction of his adoption in the movie "The Blind Side" was a lie and that the Tuohy family tricked him and profited off his name. To understand "Left Behind," one must understand a version of Christianity not widely practiced by many people outside certain pockets of the United States. In some American Evangelical churches, they preach of the coming Rapture, when all of the Christians on Earth -- including the dead ones -- will be bodily scooped up by God and transported into Heaven. The idea of a Rapture is taken from an interpretation from the Book of Thessalonians which didn't enter into the Christian lexicon until about the 1830s, making it a very recent development. When Evangelical churches began to become popular in the United States in the 1950s, a stripe of fundamentalist theology began embracing the Rapture as a prophecy that was almost immediately nigh.

“The Blind Side” was an Oscar-winning, feel-good hit from the moment that it premiered in 2009. The Sandra Bullock-led film told the story of Super Bowl champion NFL lineman Michael Oher and how his difficult childhood led to his being adopted by the Tuohy family who helped him become a high school football star, before heading off to college at Ole Miss. However, recently, Oher himself has leveled damaging accusations at the Tuohy family, claiming that they never adopted him, but instead had him placed in a conservatorship and used that to take money that rightfully should belong to him. In the latest CNN FlashDoc, ‘Blindsided,” journalists explore all sides of the story to get down to the bottom of what actually happened to this fractured family. After his name first graced the big screen in the The Blind Side, the real story of Michael Oher is told in the new documentary Blindsided, which has just debuted its first trailer ahead of its November 16th premiere.
When The Blind Side first premiered in 2009, it earned more than $300 million at the box office, nabbed Sandra Bullock an Oscar, and became one of history’s most successful sports films. The conservatorship between former NFL tackle Michael Oher and Leigh Ann and Sean Tuohy – subjects of the 2009 Oscar-winning film The Blind Side – has ended. While this is just one move in the right direction for Michael Oher, the judge did not dismiss the case itself.
The case itself stems from Michael Oher claiming that the Tuohy family tricked him into signing paperwork that made Leigh Ann and Sean conservators, even though he says he was led to believe he would be legally adopted by the couple. Adding to this, Oher alleges that the Tuohys used this status as a way to ensure he could not be properly financially compensated for The Blind Side.

Over the past week, some have called for Sandra Bullock to return the Academy Award she won for playing Leigh Anne Tuohy in 2009’s The Blind Side – and not because she didn’t deserve it. Rather, the outcry stems from former pro football player Michael Oher claiming that Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy never actually adopted him and instead used the story for financial gains, a discovery he made nearly 15 years after The Blind Side came out.
So, why are people calling for Sandra Bullock to return her Oscar for The Blind Side, which she won by beating out the likes of Meryl Streep and Helen Mirren? We’re afraid the attempts to find any logic within the situation have come up with absolutely nothing, since obviously (or so we thought…) the reception of The Blind Side and the numerous accolades Sandra Bullock received (also including a Golden Globe and...

If you were to cast your mind back to 2009, there was no greater insult of a movie than John Lee Hancock’s The Blind Side. Billing itself as the true story of Michael Oher, played by Quinton Aaron, it recounted how he was taken in by a wealthy couple, Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy (played by Tim McGraw and Sandra Bullock in the film). According to the film, they were the epitome of kindness and almost entirely without flaw. The fact that Oher became a professional football player in the NFL through his own talents and hard work was made secondary to worshiping at the altar of his supposedly loving adoptive parents. This led to Sandra Bullock winning an Oscar for her performance as the Tuohy matriarch. The film itself was somehow nominated for Best Picture despite being one of the most painfully self-aggrandizing and hollow experiences you would’ve...

Michael Lewis is deflecting blame at him and the family accused of exploiting the retired NFL player Michael Oher, the subject of his best-selling book The Blind Side, toward the “Hollywood studio system.”
Lewis told The Washington Post that he and the family of Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy have each received roughly $350,000 from the profits of the movie. He said that the Tuohys planned to evenly split their share with Oher, who declined the payments in what may be a prelude to a lawsuit. They subsequently deposited his royalty checks in a trust fund for Oher’s son, he added.
“Michael Oher should join the writers strike,” the author said in an interview with the Post on Wednesday. “It’s outrageous how Hollywood accounting works, but the money is not in the Tuohys’ pockets.”

When The Blind Side was released in 2009, the film's depiction of the story of Michael Oher, a football offensive lineman who escaped an impoverished life to play in the NFL with the help of the Tuohy family, tugged at moviegoers' heartstrings. Coming out just in time for Thanksgiving, the movie became a worldwide hit, grossing $309 million on a $29 million budget, and it eventually garnered star Sandra Bullock an Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of the family's matriarch, Leigh Anne Tuohy. Now, in 2023, the true story has come under scrutiny thanks to Oher's new claims against the family, and now somehow, many Twitter users think Bullock should have her Oscar revoked because the film's story might not ring true.

‘The Blind Side’ Author Michael Lewis Defends Tuohy Family Amid Michael Oher’s Lawsuit: ‘I Feel Sad’
“The Blind Side: The Evolution of the Game” author Michael Lewis is addressing the lawsuit against the Tuohy family filed by adoptive son Michael Oher.
Lewis, who penned the non-fiction book the 2009 film is adapted from and included Oher’s life story, came to defense of Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy Oher alleged that the Tuohy family forced him into a questionable conservatorship when he was 18 and constructed an unfair movie deal that favored royalties from the film to their two birth children.
“The Blind Side” earned more than $300 million at the box office. The four Tuohy family members allegedly each made $225,000 plus 2.5 percent of “defined net proceeds” from the film; Oher received no profit from the feature. Oher is seeking his “fair share of profits” in addition to “unspecified compensatory and punitive damages,” according to the filing in probate court.

Michael Lewis, the author of “The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game,” has responded to Michael Oher’s accusations against Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy.
Oher, the NFL star at the center of “The Blind Side” film, alleged that the Tuohys cut him out of profits from the Oscar-winning movie adaptation and never actually adopted him, instead tricking him into making the couple his conservators.
In an interview with The Washington Post, Lewis denied Oher’s claim that the Tuohys made millions off of the film, while Oher was uncompensated.
“Everybody should be mad at the Hollywood studio system,” Lewis said. “Michael Oher should join the writers strike. It’s outrageous how Hollywood accounting works, but the money is not in the Tuohys’ pockets.”
Lewis told The Washington Post that 20th Century Fox paid $250,000 for the rights to “The Blind Side,” which the author apparently split 50-50 with the Tuohy family.

Amid the ongoing legal drama between Michael Oher and the Tuohy family, author Michael Lewis — who wrote the book which the 2009 Oscar-nominated film “The Blind Side” was adapted from — is weighing in.
Recently, Oher — the former NFL star who was the inspiration behind the book and the film — filed legal documents in Tennessee court requesting it terminate a conservatorship after alleging Leigh Anne Tuohy and Sean Tuohy lied about adopting him and tricked him into making them his conservators shortly after he turned 18.
Oher claims the Tuohys made millions off his name while he never received a dime, after the film — starring Sandra Bullock, Quinton Aaron, Jae Head, Tim McGraw, Lily Collins and Kathy Bates — earned more than $300 million at the box office.
However, Lewis claims that, despite the film’s success, none of the real-life figures who inspired the film have gotten nearly any money from it in the 13 years since its release.

How Does ‘The Blind Side’ Look in Light of Michael Oher’s Lawsuit? Even More Fake Than It Did Before
It’s a clockwork ritual of awards season. A movie in contention, one based on a true story, will be dinged for presenting a version of reality that isn’t real enough. The critical chatter often starts on Twitter, but it can come from anywhere, ultimately spreading to the mainstream media. We’ve seen this happen with dramas as disparate as “A Beautiful Mind” and “Green Book” and “Mank.” The original source of the attack can often be a rival studio, out to damage an awards competitor (a tactic that was turned into a kind of bloodsport by Harvey Weinstein). Yet it’s a curious thing: By the time the Oscars have come and gone, the criticisms tend to roll right off the movie in question. It’s as if, awards season aside, they never mattered all that much in the first place.
Yet I’m not sure that’s...

Michael Oher claims that his adoption as portrayed in The Blind Side was a complete lie, as he was actually placed in a conservatorship that allowed the Tuohy family to profit off of business deals in his name. The Blind Side's narrative promotes the idea that the Tuohys adopted Oher out of love, but Oher alleges that he was deceived into signing the conservatorship agreement and received nothing while the family made millions off the film's royalties. This latest development only adds to the controversy surrounding The Blind Side, which had already been criticized for its white savior-like narrative.

There are a ton of uplifting feel-good movies like The Blind Side for fans of the Oscar-winning sports drama to enjoy. Inspired by the heartwarming true story chronicled in Michael Lewis’ 2006 book The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game, the movie was written and directed by John Lee Hancock. The Blind Side stars Quinton Aaron as Michael Oher, an offensive lineman who – with the help of his adoptive parents, Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy, played by Sandra Bullock and Tim McGraw respectively – rose from humble beginnings to become a star football player in the NFL.
When it was released in 2009, The Blind Side was a huge box office hit that grossed more than $300 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo). Bullock won the Academy Award for Best Actress and the film itself was nominated for Best Picture. The Blind Side touched audiences with its inspirational tale of parenthood, athleticism, and overcoming adversity.

Everyone loves an uplifting story, especially one that features a protagonist who beats the odds and achieves greatness. "The Blind Side" is a perfect example of this — it follows the story of Michael Oher (Quinton Aaron), a neglected kid from a rough neighborhood who succeeds academically and discovers his talents as an offensive tackle after being adopted by the wealthy Tuohy family. As a result of those skills and the love and encouragement of the Tuohys, Oher gets into college and eventually makes it to the NFL — two things that are often written off as pipe dreams by kids from poor neighborhoods.
"The Blind Side" grossed 309 million dollars worldwide, was the eighth highest-grossing movie of 2009, and earned Sandra Bullock an Academy Award for her portrayal of the feisty matriarch, Leigh Anne Tuohy. "The Blind Side" proved, once again, that audiences love an inspiring underdog tale, especially when it's based on a true story.

On Friday, August 19, 2022 Amy and Gary Green are hosting an evening fundraiser at their home in Bridgehampton, New York to support the philanthropic and conservation efforts of the African Community & Conservation Fund (Accf) and Tusk, a UK-based charity headed up by Royal Patron, Prince William.
The “Karibu Africa” soireé will raise money to help Accf’s and Tusk’s many community outreach programs, wildlife protection and anti-poaching efforts, including initiatives to improve livelihoods and combat rising food poverty in East & Southern Africa, particularly Tanzania, Rwanda, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
Covid-19 devastated jobs and livelihoods across the African continent, and with few economic recovery resources, decades of conservation and community upliftment success has been put at risk. Moreover, Russia’s war in Ukraine has collaterally created a global food crisis, as wheat and other grain shipments to Africa have been cut off or dangerously delayed.
