Best Movies & TV Shows Of Dan Harmon, Ranked
Image
Across the past few decades, Dan Harmon has garnered a progressively thriving following, and his best TV shows reveal exactly why he has such a devoted fanbase. Whether he's writing, directing, or appearing in front of the camera, Harmon's distinct creative voice shows through within every project he's involved with. With his earliest credits popping up in the late '90s, Harmon has a significant number of projects under his belt spanning an over twenty-year career.

In the 2020s, Dan Harmon is most known for specific shows like Community and Rick and Morty, which are both considered among the best comedies of the 21st century. However, Harmon didn't jump from obscurity straight to helming two of the most successful shows of the last few decades. While many of Harmon's highest regarded works are among his most popular, he has also been involved with numerous lesser-known cult classics. As the...

Worst Episodes of The Best TV Shows
Image
For TV shows like Breaking Bad and The Sopranos, it can be tough for viewers to find an episode considered "terrible" because that's how fantastic those series are. However, there are a plethora of other popular and acclaimed shows with one bad seed within a library of many great episodes. It proves that not every show, no matter how beloved it can be, is completely perfect.

These particular episodes have become infamous for being a far cry from the brilliant storytelling the rest of the series had. These episodes can feel like unnecessary filler, unhumorous adventures, or creations whose sole purpose is to rile up the fanbase. Some episodes are even series finales, which can leave a noticeable stain on the show's legacy. From the Game of Thrones ending to Stranger Things' backdoor pilot for a spin-off, viewers have nothing but bad things to say about these episodes of otherwise incredible shows.

While, Hulu is not as flashy as some of the other streaming services like Netflix, Max, and Disney+, it has a solid library of shows that are both originals and licensed through various studios. So, we thought of making a list of the best sci-fi TV shows you can find on Hulu right now.

7 Best Sci-Fi Shows on Max Right Now
Westworld (2016)
The sci-fi genre has always been one of the most beloved among cinephiles as it gives us a new look at a particular technology or our world. There was a time when Max (formerly known as HBO Max) was the place for peak sci-fi shows but after taking off Westworld and Raised by Wolves from the service, and since then it has been lacking a bit regarding sci-fi shows. But still, we picked the seven best sci-fi shows that we could find on Max.

Avenue 5

Avenue 5 is a sci-fi dark comedy series created by Armando Iannucci. The Max series is set in the future and mostly in space and it follows the story of the crew and passengers on board the interplanetary cruise ship named Avenue 5. 10 Rick and Morty Episodes That Prove Rick Cares About His Family
Image
The following article contains a mention of suicide and sexual assault.

Throughout Rick and Morty, Rick Sanchez has been unfeeling and cruel. In fact, he's far from being one of pop culture's most heroic figures as he goes about his experiments. He doesn't care about the collateral damage he causes, and his negligent attitude comes from a place of losing his family in the C-137 dimension.

However, Rick's negative traits and desire to jump to different realities for fun are all to mask the pain he feels from losing his wife, Diane, and daughter, Beth. This created a defense mechanism to hide his insecurities. While Rick has spent a vast portion of seven seasons operating selfishly with his new-found family, there are episodes that more strongly show he cares deeply.

Which Rick and Morty Episodes Went Too Far?
Image
This article contains mentions of suicide, cannibalism and incest.

Over the course of seven seasons, Rick and Morty has been filled with horrific arcs. It makes sense, given the perpetual state of existential dread Morty is always in. This problem is also compounded by how cynical and self-deprecating Rick is. But it's not just the titular characters who are subjected to these disturbing arcs.

Rick and Morty's morose energy spreads throughout the titular duo's inner-circle, and even with strangers they meet. It's why the Adult Swim cartoon transcends dark comedy in this very chaotic galaxy. When fans think Rick and Morty can't get any more bleak, it always finds a way to truly leave viewers feeling sick to their stomachs with some very grim moments that push and break boundaries in a terrifying manner.

From ‘Bubba Ho-Tep’ to ‘Totally Killer’: 8 Horror Movies to Stream on Prime Video in October 2023
Image
‘Tis the season for all streaming platforms to embrace horror on a massive scale, making the options endless for your Halloween watchlists. We’re breaking down this month’s streaming highlights by platform. While Prime Video may not deck the halls for horror’s sacred holiday like Hulu, it does bring some notable gems worth checking out this Halloween.

Here are eight newly added horror movies you won’t want to miss on Prime Video in October 2023.

Bubba Ho-Tep

Don Coscarelli takes a creative approach to addressing the sluggish nature of standard ancient mummies; he unleashes the monster upon a pool of potential victims too feeble to outrun it. Bruce Campbell stars as an aged man claiming to be the still-living Elvis Presley. When a reanimated mummy in cowboy gear starts feeding off the residents in Presley’s nursing home, he teams up with John F. “Jack” Kennedy, who uses a wheelchair,...

Nicolas Cage Could Return as Dracula in Renfield 2, Sequel May Introduce Van Helsing
Image
The director behind this year’s action-horror-comedy Renfield, Chris McKay, has revealed a few details regarding what audiences could see in a potential sequel. And it includes the return of Nicolas Cage as Dracula. Should the world of Renfield be resurrected, McKay has explained to Empire Magazine how Cage’s Prince of Darkness could make a comeback...despite being cut into pieces and scattered across the world.

"Renfield's going to cement those bits with holy water and then spread them out presumably around the world. But inside each of those cells, Dracula is still alive, and may eventually come back together.”

Not only would Renfield 2 see Cage return as Dracula, McKay reveals that a follow-up could also see The Count come up against his arch-enemy – the vampire hunting icon Van Helsing.

"There are choices that we made to suggest that there's a world of vampire-hunters out there. It would not...

‘Renfield’ – 8 Things We Learned from the Blu-ray Commentary Track
Image
Now that Renfield is available on Blu-ray and DVD, I think a lot of people will be kicking themselves for not sinking their teeth into the horror-comedy on the big screen. The home video release boasts an hour of making-of featurettes and deleted/extended scenes, plus an audio commentary with eight crew members.

The track features producer Samantha Nisenboim, screenwriter Ryan Ridley, makeup effects supervisor Christien Tinsley, visual effects supervisor James E. Price, assistant editor Noah Cody, supervising sound editor/sound designer John Marquis, supervising sound editor Nancy Nugent, and supervising digital colorist David Cole.

Here are eight things I learned from the Renfield commentary…

1. Using footage from the original Dracula was Adam McKay’s idea.

Renfield opens with Nicolas Cage’s Dracula and Nicholas Hoult’s Renfield inserted into footage from Tod Browning’s 1931 classic adaptation of Dracula, a concept that came from McKay after boarding the project.

‘Renfield’ Sets Streaming Premiere Date On Peacock
Image
Universal Pictures has set the streaming premiere date for its Chris McKay-directed horror comedy Renfield, starring Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage, announcing that the film will bow exclusively on Peacock on June 9th.

The film released in theaters on April 14th follows Renfield (Hoult), the tortured aide to history’s most narcissistic boss: Dracula (Cage). For centuries, Renfield has slavishly served Dracula by procuring his master’s prey and doing his every bidding, no matter how debased. But now, Renfield is ready to look for a new life outside the shadow of The Prince of Darkness, if only he can figure out how to end the toxic, co-dependent relationship…

Awkwafina and Shohreh Aghdashloo are among the others starring in the film scripted by Ryan Ridley, from a story by Robert Kirkman — one of a number of projects through which Uni has looked to leverage its movie monster library for a modern audience.

How Community's Dan Harmon Cobbled Together A Comedy Dream Team For Season 5
Image
After being publicly fired from the show he created, it seemed Dan Harmon was done with "Community" forever. Rarely, if ever, had a mainstream U.S. television network rehired a volatile showrunner after parting ways with them. Then again, "Community" always had a David and Goliath spirit and a surprising resilience to it, so anything was possible. Still, when NBC and Sony Pictures TV decided to bring Harmon back and hand him the keys to his show once again after an underwhelming fourth season without him, Harmon didn't have time to take a victory lap. Instead, as he relayed to Uproxx in an interview, he had one question: "Who the hell is gonna write the show"?

Because the negotiations to get him back took a little while to iron out, Harmon and his core team felt like they were already behind the eight ball when it came to season 5. "So...

‘Renfield’ Review #2
Image
Stars: Nicholas Hoult, Nicolas Cage, Awkwafina, Ben Schwartz, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Brandon Scott Jones, Adrian Martinez, Camille Chen, Bess Rous | Written by Ryan Ridley, Robert Kirkman | Directed by Chris McKay

I may be ready to give up on Nic Cage after this movie if I’m honest. Actually, that may be a tad harsh because I do feel like he is doing his best with the half-baked mindless script he was given. Cage as Dracula alone was the selling point of Renfield and as I would come to find out, Cage is not even in the damn film all that much!

I realise that I’m not exactly burying the lead here in terms of how I felt about Renfield but don’t worry because it’s not all bad. Let’s jump into it….

Renfield is not exactly reinventing the wheel here in as much as the story revolves around...

Renfield: Nicholas Hoult has shared the deleted dance sequence
Universal’s Dracula comedy Renfield (read our review Here), starring Nicolas Cage as Dracula and Nicholas Hoult as his titular lackey, didn’t light up the box office when it reached theatres last weekend. So far it has only pulled in just over $12 million… and those are the worldwide numbers. So there probably aren’t a whole lot of you who have seen the movie to know that the dance sequence Hoult shared on social media last Friday is a deleted scene… but trust us, the dance sequence isn’t in the movie. ‘Renfield’ – Nicholas Hoult Shares Deleted Dance Number from Vampire Comedy
Nicholas Hoult
Now playing in theaters, Universal’s Renfield uses the original Universal Monsters classic Dracula (1931) as the jumping off point for a brand new adventure, dissecting the not-quite-healthy relationship between Dracula and his loyal servant, R.M. Renfield. If you’ve seen it, you might’ve been curious by the images of Nicholas Hoult‘s Renfield dancing in the streets over the end credits.

For the film’s release, Hoult took to Twitter to share the full dance sequence that didn’t make the final cut. The scene comes after Renfield’s triumphant battle with the Lobos at Mulate’s restaurant, an event that inspired Dracula’s (Nicolas Cage) beleaguered familiar to change his ways. Check out the elaborate dance number below.

Renfield is billed as a “modern-day adventure story that is comedic in tone.” This excised number definitely embraces the comedy.

“In this modern monster tale of Dracula’s loyal servant,...

Robert Kirkman Addresses Ideas For A Renfield Sequel
Image
Robert Kirkman discusses the possibility of a Renfield sequel. Kirkman developed the story of Renfield and wrote the treatment before working with Ryan Ridley on the script. The movie follows Dracula's henchman, Renfield, as he tries to build a new life and get out from under his creator's thumb. Renfield's rebellion has unexpected and deadly consequences.

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant for Renfield, Kirkman reveals he already has ideas for a sequel. He explains that as a comic book writer, his brain automatically thinks about "the next issue." Kirkman keeps details about a potential sequel close to the vest and clarifies, "It doesn't mean that a sequel is in the works." Check out Kirkman's full quote below:

I'm a comic book writer and so my brain works that way. So when I was writing the treatment, I was like, "Oh, I can do this and this and this.

Robert Kirkman On The Origins And Possibilities Of Renfield
Image
In Renfield, Dracula's henchman is tired of serving the vampire who created him. When he unexpectedly comes across a traffic cop named Rebecca Quincy in modern-day New Orleans, everything changes. Renfield is spurred on by this chance encounter to build a life for himself outside of his creator. Dracula doesn't accept this insubordination lightly, and Renfield's search for independence and redemption will lead to deadly consequences.

Renfield continues the epic legacy of the Universal Monster movies, but from the perspective of the henchman instead of the infamous Dracula. Renfield features a star-studded cast led by Nicolas Cage, Nicholas Hoult, Awkwafina, Ben Schwartz, and Shohreh Aghdashloo. Nicolas Cage's Dracula Fate Sets Up An Even Bloodier Renfield Sequel
Image
Warning: This post contains major spoilers for Renfield

Nicolas Cage’s Dracula was running amok in Renfield, convinced that he would dominate the world, with his trusted familiar doing most of the legwork, of course. Directed by Chris McKay from a screenplay by Ryan Ridley and Robert Kirkman, Renfield follows the titular character as he attempts to leave his codependent relationship with Dracula.

Dracula was so convinced that Renfield would always serve him that he didn’t see it coming when his familiar turned against him. This act of betrayal ultimately led to Dracula’s demise, with Renfield and Rebecca killing the famed vampire and cutting him up into pieces with a chainsaw, and throwing his remains down a drain with a cement chaser. For all intents and purposes, Dracula is done for, but Renfield is adamant that it isn’t the last the world has seen of the deadly...

‘Renfield’ Review
Image
Stars: Nicholas Hoult, Nicolas Cage, Awkwafina, Ben Schwartz, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Brandon Scott Jones, Adrian Martinez, Camille Chen, Bess Rous | Written by Ryan Ridley, Robert Kirkman | Directed by Chris McKay

Nicolas Cage has been in just about every kind of film you can think of, and he’s played just about every kind of character you can think of. One of his best, most famous, and over-the-top parts is in 1988s Vampire’s Kiss, where Nic Cage plays a publishing executive convinced he’s turning into a bloodsucking vampire. Now, more than 30 years later, not only is Nic Cage playing a vampire, he’s playing the lord of vampires, the prince of darkness, Count Dracula. It’s a role Cage seemed destined to play, after all, his uncle Francis Ford Coppola directed the 1992 film Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Now Nic Cage gets to shine as that title character, and it’s a performance worthy of a better film.

Renfield: The History of Dracula's Most Devoted Familiar
Image
Bram Stoker's Dracula introduced characters that are almost mythological within pop culture: the Count himself, his de facto nemesis Van Helsing, and, naturally, the subject of the upcoming Renfield film from director Chris McKay and screenwriter Ryan Ridley. The name "Renfield" has been crucial to Dracula's iconography since Bram Stoker's book was published in 1897, and most film adaptations included him to some degree. McKay's iteration features none other than Nicolas Cage as the infamous vamp, upends the rule book by centering Renfield as the protagonist — deservedly so, given his intriguing psychology, his ties to his "master," and how the character is both ubiquitous yet underutilized.

Renfield's 6 Powers Explained (& How They Compare To Dracula)
Image
Warning: This post contains major spoilers for Renfield

Renfield showcases its titular character’s powers, and how they compare to Count Dracula’s. Directed by Chris McKay from a screenplay by Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ridley, Renfield turns the spotlight on Dracula’s familiar, Robert Montague Renfield, who abandons his family to join the vampire in his endeavors and, after being in servitude for so long, wants to leave the codependent relationship he has with Dracula.

Having served Dracula for a century, Renfield is psychically connected to his master, and is bound to his every want and need. One of Renfield’s primary responsibilities is procuring people for Dracula to feed on so that he can rejuvenate himself. Thanks to his role as Dracula’s familiar, Renfield has quite a few powers of his own, ones he usually employs to fight or lure people to Dracula. However, Renfield is not...

Renfield's Black & White Dracula Prologue Was Much Harder To Pull Off Than It Seems
Image
Inevitable comparisons are going be made between Bela Lugosi's classic Universal monster in Tod Browning's 1931 "Dracula" and Nicolas Cage's homage to the character in the new action comedy "Renfield," especially when director Chris McKay refers to the film as a "quasi-sequel" to the original. McKay's version certainly takes liberties with the material, catching up with Renfield (Nicholas Hoult) 90 years after Browning's masterpiece. Renfield realizes he's been in an extremely lengthy toxic relationship with his master while he sits in on group therapy sessions looking for potential victims. The abuse that Renfield suffers dates all the way back to their original meeting, prompting McKay and writers Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ridley to return to the scene of the crime in the opening prologue for "Renfield."

McKay and his team came up with the idea to essentially replace Lugosi and the original actor to play Renfield, Dwight Frye, with...

‘Renfield’ Director Chris McKay on Portraying Codependency and Toxicity with Emotion – and Accuracy
Image
This article first appeared as part of Jenelle Riley’s Acting Up newsletter – to subscribe for early content and weekly updates on all things acting, visit the Acting Up signup page.

Sometimes, you find startling accuracy in the most unlikely places. Codependency and toxic relationships have long been fodder for film and television, but lately there’s been a batch of quality entertainment that does an excellent job of depicting the reality of an unhealthy relationship — and the struggle to break free from one.

Surprisingly, it’s comedic entertainment that seems to be doing it best as of late. Take the first season of the Apple TV+ comedy “Shrinking,” which depicts a therapist (Jason Segel) trying to help a client (Heidi Gardner) break up with her verbally and emotionally abusive husband. It’s a character arc that rings only too true, expertly captured by “Saturday Night Live” breakout Gardner. Over on HBO Max,...

Inside the Painstaking Recreation of ‘Dracula’ for the Black-and-White ‘Renfield’ Prologue
Image
In “Renfield,” the title character, played by Nicholas Hoult, is desperate to end his centuries’ long codependent relationship with his master, the legendary vampire Count Dracula (Nicolas Cage). Director Chris McKay and writers Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ridley knew they needed to quickly establish the long history of Renfield and Dracula from the outset, and their method to do so led to one of the most delightfully entertaining and technically impressive openings in horror movie history — and they reached back into horror movie history to achieve it.

The prologue that begins “Renfield” takes us through the film’s core relationship by placing the actors in scenes from Tod Browning’s 1931 “Dracula,” the first of the classic Universal monster movies that inspired and influenced McKay.

The montage of classic moments in which Cage and Hoult take the place of Bela Lugosi and Dwight Frye is both an affectionate tribute and an effective means of exposition,...

Movie Review: Renfield
Image
Although first inclinations might caution one to expect some wildly over-the-top performances in something like Renfield, especially given some of the talented names involved, the film manages to deliver a uniquely entertaining comedic/horror experience that never strays too far from the essence of both genres.

This modern take on the classic monster tale follows Renfield (Nicholas Hoult) as he serves as the preparer of his master’s – who happens to be Dracula (Nicolas Cage) – meals and the procurer of his other needs and wants. Now, however, after attending a support group for victims of codependency in an effort to gather victims for his master, Renfield begins to believe that perhaps there may be a life for him that doesn’t depend on his never-ending servitude to The Prince of Darkness.

Working from a balanced and economical script by first-time screenwriter Ryan Ridley, director Chris McKay brings both the action...

Review: ‘Renfield’ Starring Nicolas Cage and Nicholas Hoult
Image
Dracula (Nicolas Cage) and Renfield (Nicholas Hoult) in ‘Renfield’ (Photo © 2023 Universal Studios)

Renfield’s a fun, albeit lightweight, take on Dracula and his bug-eating minion, lifted by the entertaining performances of Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage. There are exploding heads, an ample smattering of blood, guts, and gore, and the creative use of disembodied arms as weapons. But for all its onscreen carnage, this R-rated horror comedy is really just a campy good time, forgettable yet enjoyable enough while it lasts.

It’s a no-brainer to cast Nicolas Cage as Dracula, and the Oscar-winning actor sinks his teeth into the role with a joyous, demented glee. Very seldom is Renfield’s Dracula viewed as an actual threat to humanity, despite the film’s simple plot which suggests Dracula is positioning himself as a god who desires to be worshipped by his food source.

The film sets up the relationship between...

Renfield review: Nicolas Cage plays Count Dracula – but why doesn’t this film use him more?
Image
Nicolas Cage has never been better than he is in the pitch-black horror-comedy Vampire’s Kiss (1988), playing the role of a Manhattan yuppie convinced he’s been turned into an immortal bloodsucker. Cage acts in the film with feral sincerity, burrowing deep enough into the madness to find some childlike desire to be seen and loved. He also found the most unthinkable ways of delivering straightforward lines. “Am I getting through to you, Alva?”; “I never misfiled anything! Not once. Not one time!”. They’re inconsequential on paper, but by the sheer, weird force of how he said them, they’ve been immortalised in meme form.

Cage was born to play a vampire. Renfield, then, feels like the long-withheld fulfilment of a promise – the actor finally gets to play the biggest vampire of them all, Dracula. His performance is faultless. There’s an elegance in the Old World elongation of his...

Renfield Review
Nicolas Cage at an event for Hell Driver (2011)
Isn’t it amazing to have Nicolas Cage back in cinemas?! There is truly is no one like the mercurial, surreal performer but of course we don’t mean he has been completely gone from our screens: it’s just a lot of his output in the last decade or so has seen him predominantly confined to the smaller ones. Still, in recent years, he has graced us with his presence in ways only The Cage can with some of his most outlandish work in Mandy, Willy’s Wonderland, Prisoners of the Ghostland, and Color Out of Space, each showcasing the actor’s penchant for the extreme, the expressionistic and the fascinating.

He went full meta last year with The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, a brilliant satire film that poked fun at his long filmography and his unique persona, one that showed an often-forgotten funny side that helped him in his early career.

‘Renfield’ Review – Vampire Comedy Delivers Gory Fun and Anemic Storytelling
Image
The original 1931 Universal Monsters movie Dracula opens with an introduction to Renfield (Dwight Frye) as he travels to Transylvania to solidify business plans with Count Dracula (Bela Lugosi), only to wind up his raving mad servant instead. Director Chris McKay (The Tomorrow War) and writer Ryan Ridley (“Rick and Morty”) seamlessly tie their modern reimagining of the characters to the original Universal classic before skipping ahead to the present day in horror-comedy Renfield. The leap simultaneously establishes the reverence for the horror classics as well as an anemic shorthand in the storytelling.

After the impressive introductory sequence that sees Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage composited into the 1931 film to explain their history together, we meet Renfield (Hoult) in the present as a long-suffering henchman to his narcissistic boss, Dracula (Cage). Despite an early attempt by vampire hunters to free Renfield from Dracula’s grip, Renfield remains a miserable yet loyal...

Renfield Review: Cage & Hoult Are Excellent In Aggressively Mediocre Comedy
Image
Directed by Chris McKay from a screenplay by Ryan Ridley and Robert Kirkman, Renfield starts off strong before deteriorating in quality. Its premise, primarily having to do with leaving a codependent relationship, is great on the surface, but the decision to focus on one too many plots derails the film’s potential and initial conceit. There is still some fun to be had, and Renfield is goofy, with fantastic action sequences and a few comedic beats that land, but it could have also been so much more.

Robert Montague Renfield (Nicholas Hoult) has been Count Dracula’s (Nicolas Cage) familiar for a century, but he’s grown tired of being at the beck and call of his boss, cleaning up his messes, and finding him people to feed on. After nearly being killed by hunters, Renfield moves with Dracula to New Orleans, where the familiar has joined a support group...

Renfield Review: Nicolas Cage's Wacko Dracula Deserves A Better Movie
Image
There are some ideas too good to pass up, and "Nicolas Cage playing Dracula" has to be near the top of the list. Cage is a singular performer; an actor who has built a name for himself by twisting expectations and embracing the weird and wild. "Nouveau shamanism" is how Cage once described his acting style, although he later admitted he just made the term up because "it sounded cool." Whatever you want to call Cage's style, it's fair to say there are very few actors like him. Not all of his movies are good, mind you. In fact, lots of them are downright bad. And sometimes he seems bored with the work at hand; cashing a check, as it were. But when he finds the right role to sink his teeth into, Cage is a whirlwind; a strange, otherworldly being who behaves in a manner our puny mortal minds can't quite comprehend.

‘Renfield’ Review: Nicholas Hoult Emerges From Shadow Of Nicolas Cage’s Needy Dracula In Amusing If Bloody New Take On Classic
Image
There have been so many variations and film versions of Bram Stoker’s classic Dracula, from 1926’s Nosferatu to Tod Browning’s 1931 Dracula to Francis Coppola’s well-regarded take with Gary Oldman to even comedic satires like Love at First Bite with George Hamilton taking on the role. Now in Universal’s latest effort to rescue its horror classics and make them new again, we have the perfectly cast Nicolas Cage as the Prince of Darkness. Even he has done an offshoot before, in 1988’s Vampire’s Kiss. However this time around the film is not centered on Dracula himself, but rather his beleaguered servant, henchman, whatever you choose to call him, Renfield, and it is another Nicholas, as in Hoult, who has the title role this time in Renfield. Cage’s part, though meaty, is actually supporting as the emphasis turns to the long-suffering assistant who was tasked with bringing...

‘Renfield’ Review: Nicolas Cage and Nicholas Hoult Can’t Quite Save This Bloody Mess of a Vampire Comedy
Image
It seemed great on paper. Nicolas Cage as Dracula? It’s a role he was born to play; it’s a wonder it hasn’t happened before now (sorry, Vampire’s Kiss doesn’t count).

Renfield, Dracula’s long-suffering servant — or in vampire parlance, “familiar” — plagued by co-dependency issues and seeking help in a support group? Sounds hilarious. An original story by Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead? I’m there.

So why does Renfield downplay those promising aspects and turn out to be such a bloody mess?

The film, stemming from Universal’s understandable continuing attempts to capitalize on its classic monsters IP, certainly starts out promisingly. Renfield, played by Nicholas Hoult, provides background information about his relationship with the vampire in his life, illustrating his narration with nothing less than scenes from the 1931 classic Tod Browning film Dracula. Cage and Hoult are digitally inserted into the footage, replacing...

‘Renfield’ Review: Cage and Hoult Have Bloody Good Fun in Toothless Vampire Action Comedy
Image
Even at just 93 minutes, Chris McKay’s “Renfield” packs in a worrying number of recurring gags: there are the exploding heads and bodies that go boom during action scenes, the confessional sequences that take place in the world’s most ill-fated codependency support group, even star Nicholas Hoult being gutted (literally) twice in the span of just five minutes. But it’s another running joke that holds the key to the film: Hoult, here cast as the eponymous star Robert Montague Renfield, finds himself introducing himself by his full name, repeatedly, to everyone, all the time.

That Ryan Ridley and Robert Kirkman’s vampire action comedy screenplay feels the need to keep doing it so long and so often (this is Renfield! you know…Renfield? our star?) is proof even they’re not entirely comfortable with where all this is going. And that’s too bad, because the basic premise...

Renfield's Ben Schwartz On His 'Bad Guy Era' And Taking The F-Bomb To The Next Level [Exclusive Interview]
Image
Nicolas Cage as Dracula is grabbing all the headlines for director Chris McKay's vampire horror/comedy "Renfield," and deservedly so. But while Nicholas Hoult acquits himself very well as the subservient title character with pitch-perfect comedic timing and Cage steals the show through his penchant for hamming it up, Ben Schwartz also shines as the picture's secondary, foul-mouthed antagonist: a mobster named Teddy Lobo who gets himself mixed up in the Dracula and Renfield drama.

Everyone likely knows the actor from his meme-worthy role as Jean-Ralphio in "Parks and Recreation," his turn in Showtime's "House of Lies," or a plethora of voice performances in projects like "DuckTales," "Sonic," and more. But after charming viewers in the murder-mystery series "The Afterparty," Schwartz returned to live-action with the R-rated "Renfield" and embraced his newfound niche as the bad guy. I recently sat down with the thoroughly entertaining and larger-than-life actor to...
