Why Did Cillian Murphy Skip Science Lessons During Oppenheimer? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Cillian Murphy didn’t need to crack equations or study nuclear physics to become J. Robert Oppenheimer. Instead, he locked in on the man himself – haunted, brilliant, and deeply conflicted. While most actors might’ve dived headfirst into science prep, Murphy refused.
“I’m interested in the man and what [inventing the atomic bomb] does to the individual. The mechanics of it, that’s not really for me,” he told The Guardian. He admitted he skipped science lessons altogether, saying, “I don’t have the intellectual capability to understand them.”
For Cillian Murphy, it was all about emotion over education. And that choice made sense, considering who was directing. Oppenheimer marked his sixth collaboration with Christopher Nolan, but he took center stage this time. The film, based on American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, told the story of the...

Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer was an unsurprising success in the summer of 2023. The biographical film competed against Greta Gerwig's Barbie in a cultural phenomenon known as "Barbenheimer," effectively boosting the box office numbers for both films. Similar to Barbie, there are a lot of actors in Oppenheimer, some of whom are relatively big but have very small roles. One of these individuals is Academy Award-nominated actor Florence Pugh.
Pugh was already a well-known name before Oppenheimer, which was probably part of the reason why she was cast in the first place. The actor had supporting roles in Black Widow and Little Women, the latter of which earned her a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She also had roles that solidified her as a leading actor in Midsommar, Don't Worry Darling and The Wonder. It might strike people as kind of odd that Pugh is hardly featured in Oppenheimer.

Few people give it a second thought, but color plays a massive role in how movies are received by their audiences. The discourse surrounding the blockbuster film, Wicked, serves as a glaring example of this. While the film is being heavily praised for certain elements, Wicked is still receiving widespread criticism due to its underwhelming color grading. It can be difficult for audiences to feel fully invested in a film if the color is not quite right.
In an intriguing contrast, however, the complete absence of color can actually play an equally vital role in a film. Even though Hollywood has obviously moved well beyond the strictly black-and-white era of filmmaking, many modern movies still utilize this minimalist color scheme. The use of this unique strategy not only helps current movies stand out from the crowd in a visual sense, but it also allows the filmmakers to convey complex messages...

Charlize Theron (“Monster”) is the latest Oscar winner to join the cast of Christopher Nolan‘s next movie, following the likes of Matt Damon (“Good Will Hunting”), Anne Hathaway (“Les Misérables”), and Lupita Nyong’o (“12 Years a Slave”).
In addition, Robert Pattinson was announced last week, and lovebirds Tom Holland and Zendaya joined the cast previously. It looks like everyone in Hollywood now wants to work with Nolan following the success of his 2023 blockbuster “Oppenheimer,” which won seven total Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director.
Little is known about the new film that’s directed, written, and produced by Nolan for Universal Pictures, except that it will be an “event” and it will have an IMAX theater release on July 17, 2026. That’s — checks calendar — a whopping 20 months away. If only we had the ability to fast-forward through time, like Nolan’s central character in “Interstellar” (2014).
This marks Theron’s first career collaboration with Nolan.

Here’s why Oppenheimer is one of the most unique Hollywood movies (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer was as intense as the man behind the bomb. From the get-go, Nolan pulled audiences into the genius and turmoil of J. Robert Oppenheimer, portrayed with haunting luminosity by Cillian Murphy. And true to Nolan’s style, Oppenheimer didn’t just show history—it tangled, teased, and exploded it on screen. This wasn’t just another biopic; it was a staggering plunge into a mind grappling with the ethics of atomic power, with Nolan playing maestro to every jittery, overwhelming moment.
In a way only Nolan can, the film dances the fine line between elegance and grandiosity, blending grandeur with the daunting realities Oppenheimer faced. Sure, some scenes—like the cosmic visuals of whirling stars and molten lava—felt almost too exquisite, yet they conveyed the awe and terror of unlocking the universe’s darkest secrets.

Lives of historical figures often get cinematic treatment to tell sweeping tales of real life events, and Ali Abbasi’s The Apprentice captures former president Donald Trump in a key moment before the 2024 presidential election. Starring Sebastian Stan as Trump, Jeremy Strong as Roy Cohn and Maria Bakalova as Trump’s first wife Ivanka, the film marks the latest in a catalog of films that explore the lives of political people. From United States Presidents to their wives and First Ladies, to Supreme Court Justices to scientists and brilliant minds, nobody is off limits, especially if the stories are triumphant. Others have more tragic endings.

James Woods reveals why he kept quiet about his involvement with Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
The actor and vocal Donald Trump supporter recently opened up in an interview why it was “painful” for him to sit back and not talk about the Cillian Murphy-starring film, saying he “took one for the team.”
“When Oppenheimer came out, there was a discussion about my Twitter, and it was gently suggested that I basically remain invisible, which was painful,” he said on Megyn Kelly’s SiriusXM show.
Woods claims that his vociferous support for Trump on social media could affect the success of the biopic about J. Robert Oppenheimer, the film which was based on the 2005 bio American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, which Woods owned the rights to.

James Woods recently told Megyn Kelly on her SiriusXM radio show that he was “gently” asked not to promote Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” in which he served as an executive producer after buying rights to the non-fiction book (“American Prometheus” by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin) upon which Nolan’s screenplay is based. The film was a cultural juggernaut with $975 million worldwide (the highest-grossing biopic in history) and won Oscars for best picture, director, actor, supporting actor and more.
“When ‘Oppenheimer’ came out, there was a discussion about my Twitter, and it was gently suggested that I basically remain invisible, which was painful,” Woods said, claiming that his outspoken support for Donald Trump over the years made him a risk for “Oppenheimer’s” release and awards campaign.

Oppenheimer creatively parallels the story of the physicist with the Greek titan Prometheus, exploring the moral dilemmas of scientific progress. Christopher Nolan immerses audiences in Oppenheimer's genius and downfall, showcasing gripping performances and visuals in the Oscar-winning film. The strained relationship between Oppenheimer and Lewis Strauss adds depth to the narrative, echoing the themes of punishment and moral consequences.
Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer is loosely based on Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin's American Prometheus and even subtly highlights why the notable physicist was given that title. The Oscar-winning film Oppenheimer made waves at the global box office not only because of the Barbenheimer pop-culture phenomenon but also because of its gripping portrayal of the atomic bomb's development and aftermath during World War II. While Oppenheimer takes a fair share of creative liberties with its portrayal of historical events, the film features some incredible performances and memorable visuals.

The end of a long partnership between Nolan and Warner Bros. led to Nolan's successful move to Universal Pictures. Nolan's decision to bring Oppenheimer to Universal was met with great success, resulting in critical acclaim and financial gain. Despite Warner Bros.' desire to have Nolan back, Universal's fulfillment of Nolan's demands has proven to be highly beneficial for both parties.
After Christopher Nolan achieved a career breakthrough with his sophomore feature directorial outing, the 2000 psychological thriller film Memento, Nolan became attached to Warner Bros. Pictures, which enabled Nolan to make a seamless transition to studio film-making with the 2002 psychological thriller Insomnia. Nolan followed Insomnia with the 2005 origin film Batman Begins, the first installment in Nolans The Dark Knight trilogy. Throughout the trilogy and with the adjoining Nolan films Dunkirk, Inception, Interstellar, and The Prestige, Warner Bros. gave Nolan unprecedented budgetary and creative freedom. This resulted in one of the most successful partnerships in history.

Five full weeks after the Oscars, the Writers Guild of America finally got around to giving out its awards. Oscar winner Cord Jefferson (“American Fiction”) won the original screenplay prize while David Hemingson (“The Holdovers”) picked up the adapted screenplay trophy; he had lost at the Oscars to “Anatomy of a Fall,” which was ineligible here.
Three other scripts deemed ineligible by the WGA went on to win Oscars in the past decade: “Birdman” (2015; original), “The Father” (2021; adapted), and “Belfast” (2022; original). During that time, 68 of the WGA Awards nominees numbered among the 100 screenplays that reaped Oscar bids.

David Hemingson’s The Holdovers at Focus Features won original screenplay and Cord Jefferson’s Oscar-winning American Fiction from Amazon MGM Studios took adapted honours at the strike-delayed Writers Guild Awards on Sunday.
This was a second major adapted screenplay award in relatively short order for Jefferson after last month’s Oscar win.
The Holdovers prevailed in an original screenplay category that included Barbie and May December, but not the Oscar winner Anatomy Of A Fall, rendered ineligible here because it was not produced under a Writers Guild of America (WGA) contract.

Oppenheimer is now Christopher Nolan's highest-grossing movie overseas thanks to its recent release in Japan. Oppenheimer has now made $640 million overseas, beating The Dark Knight Rises' $634 million. Nolan's movie has been a major success both critically and commercially.

Robert Oppenheimer, Nolan's latest film has been a smash hit with both audiences and critics since its release in theaters last summer. The film just recently released in theaters in Japan following a lengthy period of deliberation due to the biopic's subject matter, continuing the film's hot streak.

The film just recently released in theaters in Japan following a lengthy period of deliberation due to the biopic's subject matter, continuing the film's hot streak.
Per a new report from Collider, Oppenheimer has now made $5.5 million at the box office over the course of its last two weeks of availability in Japan. This has pushed the film's overseas tally to $640 million,...

Oppenheimer's "Can You Hear The Music" montage visually and narratively portrays the physicist's genius and moral dilemmas. Christopher Nolan's film captures Oppenheimer's complex character through memorable interactions and scenes. The scenes involving Picasso's painting, T.S. Eliot's poem, and glass smashing reflect Oppenheimer's inner struggles and scientific journey.
Oppenheimer's "Can You Hear The Music" montage is one of the most memorable sequences from the film, not only because it is visually stunning but also because it is narratively deep. Based on American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, Christopher Nolan's epic biographical drama Oppenheimer walks through several major milestones of the titular physicist's life while giving audiences a glimpse of his genius, internal battles, and moral dilemmas. In its 3-hour runtime, Oppenheimer never leaves a dull moment as it immerses viewers in its scintillating depiction of the atomic bomb's development and aftermath.

A kind word from Christopher Nolan meant everything to David Krumholtz circa 2007 and beyond. It’s a story that sounds a lot like Bruce Wayne’s final admission to Commissioner Gordon in Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy, as you never know just how impactful a random act of kindness can be for someone else. Roughly 17 years ago, the now Oscar-winning filmmaker was scouting for The Dark Knight at Los Angeles Center Studios, and Krumholtz happened to be there, shooting Numbers. That’s when Nolan approached the actor and paid him an unexpected compliment regarding his performance as mathematical genius Charlie Eppes on the hit CBS show.
From there, Krumholtz couldn’t help but hold out hope that Nolan would cast him someday, and the opportunity finally came in the form of Oppenheimer’s Isidor Isaac Rabi, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist and endearingly loyal friend to J. Robert “Oppie” Oppenheimer...

Based on the biography of J. Robert Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan’s 2023 blockbuster starring Cillian Murphy made its way to the Oscars and bagged the highest number of accolades during the 96th Academy Awards. Earning close to a billion dollars at the box office, following its release, Oppenheimer was hailed by fans worldwide, except for Japan.
Cillian Murphy in and as Oppenheimer
Given that the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki took a toll on the Japanese citizens, it was considered only natural for the theatres to avoid the release of Oppenheimer. However, on a recent note, the film finally premiered in the nation where two cities were obliterated by the very atomic bomb, that was the subject of the movie. With understandably mixed reactions, Oppenheimer hit Japanese theatres.

Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan reportedly got a major payday thanks to his film's success. Hitting theaters last year, Oppenheimer chronicles the life and career of American theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. The film, which stars Cillian Murphy in the title role, was a major critical and commercial success, ultimately earning more than $958 million worldwide. The historical drama was also a major winner at the 2024 Oscars, taking home seven awards in total, including Best Picture and Best Director.
A recent report from Variety now claims that Nolan's final payday for Oppenheimer comes in at just under $100 million. This figure includes his base salary for the movie, as well as his backend compensation, box-office milestone escalators, and even a bonus for taking home the Best Picture and Best Director awards at the Oscars.

Oppenheimer took home the most golden statues — including director Christopher Nolan’s very first Academy Award — at the 2024 Oscars, which was hosted once again by Jimmy Kimmel.
Christopher Nolan’s J. Robert Oppenheimer biopic led the pack with 13 nominations and ultimately won best picture, best director, best actor (Cillian Murphy), best supporting actor (Robert Downey Jr.), best cinematography (Hoyte van Hoytema) and best original score (Ludwig Göransson). It was followed by Poor Things, which won four awards (including best actress for Emma Stone) and was nominated for 11. An awards season unlike any other — during which the first simultaneous strikes of actors and writers in Hollywood history largely prevented campaigning by talent for months — came to an end Sunday night at the 96th Academy Awards.
As was widely expected, Oppenheimer dominated, winning seven Oscars — no film has won more since Slumdog Millionaire snagged eight, 15 years ago — including for best picture (Christopher Nolan, Emma Thomas and Chuck Roven), director (Nolan), actor (Cillian Murphy, the category’s first Irish winner), supporting actor (Robert Downey Jr.), cinematography (Hoyte van Hoytema), film editing (Jennifer Lame) and original score (Lugwig Göransson).
That’s quite an achievement for not just the filmmakers, who adapted a book (Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer) that many thought was unadaptable into a riveting instant classic of a film, but also for the teams that sold it...

If Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer marks the high point in the career of Cillian Murphy, and is the film for which he’s always remembered, so be it, the actor said, in an appearance backstage at tonight’s Oscars.

“It’s very important to me, it’s really a wonderful finish to what’s been an incredible year,” Christopher Nolan told press backstage at the Academy Awards in the wake of winning both his Best Director Oscar for Oppenheimer, along with the biggest prize of the night: Best Picture.
“It means I can do curls, they’re very heavy,” Nolan joked of his new collection of statuettes for his film about J. Robert Oppenheimer, the physicist behind the atom bomb. In Oppenheimer, longtime Nolan collaborator Cillian Murphy enacts the history of a man who changed our world forever, with Robert Downey Jr. as his jealous nemesis Lewis Strauss — both of whom won Oscars for their lead and supporting performances respectively. Emily Blunt starred as Kitty Oppenheimer and was nominated in the Supporting Actress category. The film took home seven Oscars in total, including Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography and Best Original Score.

After more than two decades making cerebral, critically acclaimed films that also have mass commercial appeal, Christopher Nolan has finally taken home a best picture Oscar with Oppenheimer.
The triumph at the 2024 Oscars comes 15 years after Nolan’s The Dark Knight failed to earn a best picture nomination, a snub that was largely credited with the Academy expanding the number of best picture nominees the following year and which paved the way for a wide swath of contenders. The 96th Academy Awards have come and gone, and the night's victor was absolutely "Oppenheimer," Christopher Nolan's epic chronicling the primary developer of the atomic bomb (Cillian Murphy), which won seven Oscars during the ceremony.
It's doubly impressive since 2023 was a dang good year for movies. Surveying the Best Picture nominees, both veteran filmmakers like Martin Scorsese ("Killers of the Flower Moon") and promising new artists such as Celine Song ("Past Lives") stand in its ranks. But really, "Oppenheimer" was the achievement of the year — and yes, without any disrespect to Greta Gerwig or Margot Robbie, I'd even put it ahead of "Barbie," its unofficial "Barbenheimer" double-bill picture.
The triumph of "Oppenheimer" looped back around from feeling inevitable to uncertain to ensured once again. The film opened to rapturous reception, but it was a summer release. Would something come along in the typical Oscar months of autumn to dethrone it?...

Oppenheimer's multiple Oscar wins put lead actor Cillian Murphy in an exclusive actor club that should be easier to get into. Only five other biopics have won Best Picture and Best Actor at the Academy Awards prior to Oppenheimer. With biopics often winning Best Picture, it should be more common that they also take home Best Actor trophies.
Oppenheimer won big at the 96th annual Academy Awards, and its Oscars achievement puts Cillian Murphy in a very exclusive actor club — one that should, frankly, be easier to get into. Many 2024 Best Picture predictions suggested Oppenheimer would take home the gold in that category. And with a total of 13 nominations overall, it was expected to take home multiple Oscars.

He’s the director most associated with 21st century cinematic spectacle and, finally, he has an Oscar. Christopher Nolan has won the Best Director Oscar at the 96th Academy Awards for “Oppenheimer.”
This is only the second time Nolan’s ever been nominated for Best Director. His first came for 2017’s “Dunkirk.” He has received a total of eight Oscar nominations in his entire career, however, including those two Best Director nods: also, for Best Original Screenplay for 2000’s “Memento,” Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay for 2010’s “Inception,” Best Picture for “Dunkirk,” and Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture for “Oppenheimer.” With the film also winning Best Picture that means he actually now has two Oscars.
“Oppenheimer” itself won seven Oscars: in addition to Best Director and Best Picture, it won Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr., Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, and Best Actor for Cillian Murphy.

Ahead of the 2024 Oscars, the Nuclear Threat Initiative (Nti) launched its “Make Nukes History” campaign in Los Angeles, using the nominated film Oppenheimer to expand the conversation on nuclear threats.
As explained on the Nti’s official site, the campaign involves billboards, an art installation, street posters and an open letter signed by various stars, calling for the use of nuclear weapons to be ceased.
In a statement shared with the announcement of the campaign, Matthew Modine, who was part of Oppenheimer‘s cast, writes, “Every person should be educated about the incredible destructive power of nuclear weapons. Understanding the threat illuminates a necessary path toward their elimination.”
Modine adds, “Hundreds of thousands of Americans have been directly harmed by radioactive fallout from the hundreds of nuclear explosions conducted on U.S. soil. From the moment of the first atomic bomb test at Los Alamos, New Mexico, our entire planet has been at risk.

The State of the Race
Summer blockbusters “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” are back to vying against each other in this category now that the Academy has switched two-time screenwriter Oscar nominees Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach’s outrageous based-on-an-unwritten-character scenario from Original back to Adapted.
Also nominated twice for screenwriting, Christopher Nolan painstakingly created a twisty ticking-bomb timeline for “Oppenheimer,” which is adapted from Kai Bird and Martin Sherwin’s lauded tome “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer.” Every word counts as a gamut of real-life characters move in and out of the frame, always centered on the point-of-view of scientist Oppenheimer and...

The USC Libraries announced the winners for the 36th annual USC Libraries Scripter Award, which honors the year’s best film and television adaptations, as well as the works on which they are based. This group of academics, industry professionals, and critics (for which I vote) is often predictive of the Adapted Screenplay Oscar race.
For the second year in a row, “Slow Horses” took home the prize for episodic series; Cord Jefferson won the 2024 award for film adaptation; both he and the author of the novel he adapted, Percival Everett, were in attendance. Jefferson thanked Everett for trusting him with his 2001 novel, which he felt was written just for him. “He has managed to mine my novel for the material he needed to make this film,” said Everett, who teaches at USC. “And then I sat back and did nothing. So good job. Thank you.”

In the film category, American Fiction (Cord Jefferson’s adaptation of Percival Everett’s novel Erasure) topped fellow nominees Killers of the Flower Moon (Eric Roth and Martin Scorsese’s adaptation of David Grann’s book Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI); Oppenheimer (Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer); Origin (Ava DuVernay’s adaptation of Isabel Wilkerson’s book Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents); and Poor Things (Tony McNamara’s adaptation of Aliasdair Gray’s novel of the same name).

Villeneuve believes Oppenheimer's 3-hour runtime contributed to its $960 million success, proving young audiences crave meaningful content. Dune: Part Two, also a lengthy film, is projected to succeed at the box office despite previous longer films by Villeneuve facing challenges. Villeneuve suggests that young audiences are now more open to longer cinematic experiences, as seen with the success of Oppenheimer.
Denis Villeneuve argues that Oppenheimer's 3-hour runtime boosted it to becoming a $960 million box office success. Christopher Nolan’s epic biopic on the life of the fabled father of the A-bomb became the most unlikely of blockbusters when it hit theaters in the summer of 2023. Pitted head-to-head against the audience-friendly Barbie, the film shocked box office observers by grossing nearly $1 billion worldwide, and is now poised to dominate at the Oscars.
Conventional wisdom might state that Oppenheimer’s 3-hour runtime worked against it at the box office, but Dune: Part...
