If Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer marks the high point in the career of Cillian Murphy, and is the film for which he’s always remembered, so be it, the actor said, in an appearance backstage at tonight’s Oscars.

“[I’d be] very content,” said the actor, recognized with Best Actor for his turn as “father of the atomic bomb,” J. Robert Oppenheimer. “I mean, you know, you’ve got to move forward, but this has been a huge, huge moment for me. The movie is so special to me, and myself and Chris have such a special relationship that I just feel very privileged to get to work with him.”

Continued Murphy: “I’m very proud that this is a film that is provocative and that asks questions and is challenging, but yet so many people want to see it. I’m really, really proud of that.”

“It’s very important to me, it’s really a wonderful finish to what’s been an incredible year,” Christopher Nolan told press backstage at the Academy Awards in the wake of winning both his Best Director Oscar for Oppenheimer, along with the biggest prize of the night: Best Picture.

“It means I can do curls, they’re very heavy,” Nolan joked of his new collection of statuettes for his film about J. Robert Oppenheimer, the physicist behind the atom bomb. Ahead of the 2024 Oscars, the Nuclear Threat Initiative (Nti) launched its “Make Nukes History” campaign in Los Angeles, using the nominated film Oppenheimer to expand the conversation on nuclear threats.

As explained on the Nti’s official site, the campaign involves billboards, an art installation, street posters and an open letter signed by various stars, calling for the use of nuclear weapons to be ceased.

In a statement shared with the announcement of the campaign, Matthew Modine, who was part of Oppenheimer‘s cast, writes, “Every person should be educated about the incredible destructive power of nuclear weapons. Understanding the threat illuminates a necessary path toward their elimination.”

Modine adds, “Hundreds of thousands of Americans have been directly harmed by radioactive fallout from the hundreds of nuclear explosions conducted on U.S. soil. From the moment of the first atomic bomb test at Los Alamos, New Mexico, our entire planet has been at risk.

The USC Libraries announced the winners for the 36th annual USC Libraries Scripter Award, which honors the year’s best film and television adaptations, as well as the works on which they are based. This group of academics, industry professionals, and critics (for which I vote) is often predictive of the Adapted Screenplay Oscar race.

For the second year in a row, “Slow Horses” took home the prize for episodic series; Cord Jefferson won the 2024 award for film adaptation; both he and the author of the novel he adapted, Percival Everett, were in attendance.
