Netflix has shared some fresh news about its upcoming Ghostbusters animated series during the Annecy 2025 Film Festival. The show is now fully in production, though there’s still no official release date announced. This series is part of Netflix’s Family Spectacle lineup and is being made with Sony Pictures Animation.

Dominique Bazay, Netflix’s Director of Animation for Families and Kids, introduced the series at Annecy. She explained that Ghostbusters is grouped with other big family shows like Minecraft, Clash of Clans, and Stranger Things: Tales from ’85. Bazay said the goal is to create animation that appeals to everyone, from kids to grandparents, whether they watch together or on their own.

She said, “These spectacle shows are a giant bet for us. We want to make spectacular animation for the entire family, for parents, for kids, for teens, for grandparents, for young adults, whether they watch together or apart.

Updated, 1:30 Pm: CBS Studios has released the official trailer and key art for the second season of Star Trek: Prodigy. In the trailer we see the returns of Vau N’Akat villain Asencia (Jameela Jamil) and Starfleet Officer Commander Tysess (Daveed Diggs) to the cast. Season 2 also involves a classified mission and a whole lot of time-paradox weirdness: “This is one heck of a ride!”

“Star Trek: Prodigy” has set its official launch date on Netflix.

Season 1 of the animated series will debut on the streamer on Dec. 25. The announcement was made as part of Netflix’s annual Geeked Week.

It was announced in October that the series would be moving to Netflix after it was canceled at Paramount+ despite having been renewed for a second season. Netflix will also be airing the second season, though there is no premiere date for it at the time of this publishing.

With the move, “Prodigy” will be the first new “Star Trek” series to air domestically outside of the Paramount ecosystem since the revamped “Star Trek” TV universe launched with “Star Trek: Discovery” in 2017.

The animated children's series Prodigy is set in the Star Trek universe, and the first season originally premiered on Paramount+ and Nickelodeon in 2021. While initially renewed for a second season, Paramount decided to cancel the series and remove the first season from Paramount+ in June 2023. A group of Star Trek fans have banded together to try and save the recently canceled Star Trek: Prodigy, which was axed by Paramount+ ahead of its planned second-season return.

After gathering 33,000 signatures in a petition on Change.org and raising money via GoFundMe, the fans contracted a plane to fly a “Save Star Trek Prodigy” banner over the Los Angeles offices Amazon, Hulu and Apple — including circling for 10 minutes over the Netflix offices on Sunset Boulevard.

Co-showrunners Dan and Kevin Hageman took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to praise the effort: “This is incredible. We owe these Trek fans a pint and our lifetime devotion. Blessed to have people like all of you in our stratosphere.” Fans also joined co-executive producer Aaron Waltke and voice actress Bonnie Gordon outside of the Netflix building.

Four Paramount+ originals — “Star Trek: Prodigy,” “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies,” “The Game” and “Queen of the Universe” — have been canceled by the streaming service and are set to be removed as the streamer prepares to merge with Showtime, TheWrap has learned.

“As we prepare to combine Paramount+ and Showtime later this month in the U.S., we are refining our content offering to deliver the best streaming experience for subscribers,” a spokesperson for Paramount+ told TheWrap. “The Paramount+ series ‘Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies,’ ‘Star Trek: Prodigy,’ ‘Queen of the Universe’ and ‘The Game’ have completed their runs on Paramount+ and will not be returning to the service. We want to extend our thanks to our tremendously talented cast and crew and our producing partners for their passionate work and dedication on these programs and we wish them all the best on their future endeavors.”

Paramount+ has canceled a slew of its originals including Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, Star Trek: Prodigy, Queen of the Universe and The Game and is taking the shows off its platform as it becomes the latest media company to take a content write-down.

Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies has been canceled after one season, Star Trek: Prodigy will not be going forth with its previously announced second season, The Game has been canceled after two seasons and Graham Norton-hosted reality series Queen of the Universe has been axed after two seasons.

All of these titles will be removed from Paramount+ with the studios planning to shop some of them to rival broadcasters and streamers.

The company will take a content impairment charge and is expected to reveal the financial impact at its next earnings.

The Star Trek Universe continues to expand with Paramount+ announcing the renewal of its live-action “Strange New Worlds” through Season 3 and its animated “Lower Decks” through Season 5.

The third season of “Strange New Worlds” and the fifth season of “Lower Decks” will be comprised of 10 episodes each, but no air dates have been announced. But the streamer announced Tuesday that the second season of “Strange New Worlds” will premiere on July 15, 2023, and the third season of “Lower Decks” will premiere in “late summer.”

Season 2 of “Strange New Worlds” will feature a special crossover episode between the two series featuring both live-action and animation. It’ll be directed by longtime “Trek” actor and director Jonathan Frakes (Will Riker).

The critically acclaimed original animated kids’ series “Star Trek: Prodigy” is slated to return in winter 2023 for its second season.

The future of Paramount+'s YA animated series, Star Trek: Prodigy, has received an exciting update as the project aims to expand its presence beyond the small screen. The series follows a group of enslaved teenagers as they steal a derelict Starfleet vessel to escape and explore the galaxy. The series was created by The Lego Movie scribes Dan and Kevin Hageman and has been received well by audiences and critics dating back to its debut.

In a recent interview with the Mission Log podcast (via TrekMovie.com), the series creators were joined by producer Ben Hibon to discuss the future of Star Trek: Prodigy. The creators shared their big hopes for future seasons of the show and even said that they're interested in making a movie about the characters of the show.

No one knew what to expect when Paramount+ announced its partnership with Nickelodeon to create an animated Star Trek series aimed at kids. It had literally never been done before.

And by any measure, Star Trek: Prodigy's inaugural ten episodes exceeded anything anyone could have imagined. Premiering on October 28, 2021, it impressed viewers, both young and... er, classic, with its action, artistry, and emotional depth.

Its own creators, Dan and Kevin Hageman, the writers behind the Emmy award-winning Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia, have been deservedly delighted by its success.

Paramount+ today debuted the official mid-season trailer for season one of its original animated kids’ series, Star Trek: Prodigy. The trailer was introduced by executive producers Kevin and Dan Hageman, during the “Star Trek” universe panel at New York Comic Con.

It was also announced that Ronny Cox has joined the season one voice cast with a recurring role. Cox will reprise his Star Trek: The Next Generation role as Admiral Edward Jellico, a promotion from his original character, Captain Jellico.

Star Trek: Prodigy will have its mid-season return on Thursday, Oct. 27, exclusively for Paramount+ subscribers in the US, and on Friday, Oct. 28 in Latin America, Australia, Italy and the U.K. Following the series’ return, new episodes of the 10-episode-long second half will be available to stream weekly on Thursdays. The series will air later in the year in South Korea, Germany, Italy, France, Austria and Switzerland.

“Discovery” star Sonequa Martin-Green joined the Nycc panel to introduce the teaser for the Paramount+ series, which provides fans a first look at new characters played by Callum Keith Rennie, Eve Harlow and Elias Toufexis.

Rennie plays Rayner, a weathered Starfleet captain who’s at home in the battle. Harlow portrays Moll, a cunning outlaw that faces off with the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery. L’ak, Moll’s partner, is played by Toufexis.

The “Discovery” Nycc panel featured cast members Anthony Rapp and Wilson Cruz, as well as executive producers Michelle Paradise, Alex Kurtzman and Rod Roddenberry.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Prodigy are expanding their casts. Oscar nominee Carol Kane is set for a recurring role in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and Billy Campbell has joined the voice cast of animated series Prodigy. The news was announced Thursday as part of the global live-streamed Star Trek Day event.

Believe it or not, words fail me at times. Not often, but trying to articulate the level of admiration I have for the team that created Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1 Episode 10 falls in that frustratingly "lightning-bug-instead-of-lightning" way.

Finale episodes -- whether season-enders or midseason -- are held to a higher standard than a typical episode.

The Star Trek: Prodigy team -- all of whom are credited on-screen and have been throughout social media with having a hand in the actualization of "A Moral Star" -- does everything perfectly. And that's about as rare as a childless tribble.

Series executive producer Heather Kadin had previously said the show would return for a second season, but it had not been officially confirmed until now. The renewal news comes after the show has aired only three episodes, including the two-part series premiere.

More adventures are on the horizon for the crew of the U.S.S. Protostar. Ahead of its Season 1 midseason finale, Paramount+ has renewed popular animated kids series Star Trek: Prodigy for a second season. The streamer has ordered a 10-episode second season for premiere sometime next year.

The renewal announcement comes amid strong viewership for Season 1, which saw the top-performing premiere day out for any original animated kids series on the service, according to the streamer.

Season 1 premiered on Thursday, Oct. 28 with a one-hour episode on Paramount+, with new episodes rolling out weekly on Thursdays through Thursday, Nov. 18. Following a mid-season break, the remaining five episodes of season one’s first half will begin streaming weekly, starting on Thursday, Jan. 6.

On October 28, Paramount+, in partnership with Nickelodeon, will launch Star Trek: Prodigy, the first Trek series created specifically for a target audience of young people.

This is a show that comes to the table with an exceptional pedigree in creativity. Creators Dan and Kevin Hageman are a powerhouse brother duo with writing credentials for long-running popular animated series such as Netflix's Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia and Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu.

At New York Comic-Con, they were joined by director Ben Hibon who brings experience in animation direction and design to the team. Together, the team spoke virtually with a roundtable of press members about the inspiration and aspirations of their fledgling series.

Not a children's show but also not in the vein of juvenile-yet-adult cartoons like Bojack Horseman and South Park, Star Trek: Prodigy harkens back to the epic adventure animated series like The Pirates of Dark Water and -- dare we mention it?...

Exclusive: Award-winning filmmaker Fatih Akin has signed with Sentient Entertainment for management across all areas.

The German-Turkish creative is perhaps best known for his thriller In the Fade, which claimed the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film in 2017 and brought star Diane Kruger the Cannes Film Festival’s award for Best Actress. The film was selected to compete there for the Palme D’Or and was Germany’s official entry for the Academy Awards.

Akin is currently in production on his next film, Rheingold, based on the real-life story of Turkish gangster rapper Xatar. He also recently acquired the rights to Buddha, the graphic novel from acclaimed Japanese illustrator Osamu Tezuka, and will adapt it as a TV series, which Sentient is currently packaging.

The Star Trek franchise is among the most venerable of all 20th century entertainment properties. Having already birthed nine TV series and 13 feature films since its initially short-lived debut run in the 1960s, the thinking person’s space opera has mapped out the furthest reaches of the galaxy and all points in between. But now, it is prepared to boldly breach a demographic that it has not specifically attempted to tap before: kids.

Driven by showrunners Kevin Hageman and Dan Hageman, as well as director Ben Hibon, Nickelodeon’s animated “Star Trek: Prodigy” will introduce a fresh cast of protagonists, as well as animated versions of legacy characters, in particular the “Star Trek: Voyager” fan favorite Kathryn Janeway, voiced by returning actor Kate Mulgrew. “Star Trek: Prodigy” will first roll out on Paramount Plus later this month, before heading into Nickelodeon’s regular programming.

The new Star Trek: Prodigy has added Daveed Diggs, Jameela Jamil, Jason Alexander and Robert Beltran to its voice casting for the show, which premieres on Oct. 28 on Paramount+.

The series, produced by Nickelodeon and CBS Studios’ Eye Animation Productions, showcased a first-look clip from the series at New York Comic Con. It features a hologram of iconic Captain Kathryn Janeway (voiced by Kate Mulgrew).

In addition, it was revealed that Diggs will voice Commander Tysess, Jamil will voice Ensign Asencia, Alexander will voice Doctor Noum, and Beltran will reprise his “Star Trek: Voyager” role as Captain Chakotay.

tNetflix released a trailer for Bear Grylls’ “You vs. Wild: Out Cold,” premiering on Sept. 14.

The interactive movie, set after a plane crash, recruits viewers to help Grylls find his friend and escape danger. As the survival expert navigates huge rock walls, freezing dark tunnels and creepy wildlife creatures, viewers at home help lead him to safety by making choices on their remote.

Grylls, Delbert Shoopman of The Natural Studios, Rob Buchta, Chris Grant, Drew Buckley, Liz Schulze, Ben Silverman and Howard Owens of Propagate Content serve as executive producers, while Ben Simms directs.

“Star Trek: Prodigy,” the latest addition to the expanding universe of “Trek” series on Paramount Plus, is adding sci-fi heavyweights John Noble (“Fringe”) and Jimmi Simpson (“Westworld”) to its series regular cast, the streamer announced on Thursday.

Noble will voice the animated series’ lead villain, known as the Diviner, who rules the mining asteroid of Tars Lamora in a merciless quest to locate the U.S.S. Protostar, the mysteriously abandoned experimental Federation starship at the center of the show. Instead, a motley crew of six young aliens finds the ship, and learns from the emergency training hologram, Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), how to operate it and what the Federation stands for.

One of the Protostar’s fledgling crew happens to be the Diviner’s child, Gwyn (Ella Purnell), which no doubt complicates matters for her new compatriots, especially since the Diviner sees Gwyn as the heir to his legacy.

For the second year, San Diego Comic-Con had to pivot to online panels, and Star Trek Universe beamed in on an animated wavelength, presenting two panels, both moderated by Jerry O'Connell.

The first to hit the YouTube Channel was the creative team and cast behind Star Trek: Prodigy, the first Star Trek series to target young viewers as well as adults.

The show was created through a joint effort by CBS Studios’ Eye Animation Productions, CBS Studios’ new animation arm; Nickelodeon Animation Studio; Secret Hideout; and Roddenberry Entertainment.

Charting a brand new frontier for the “Star Trek” franchise, the cast and creators of Paramount Plus’ “Star Trek: Prodigy” debuted the teaser trailer for the animated kids series on Friday during the virtual Comic-Con@Home panel for the “Trek” TV universe.

The trailer establishes that executive producers Kevin and Dan Hageman and director/co-executive producer Ben Hibon are approaching the show — co-produced by Nickelodeon Animation Studio and CBS Eye Animation Productions — with a dramatic visual style that belies the series status as the first “Trek” series explicitly created for kids.

“It’s not designed just for kids,” Hibon said during the panel. “It’s just designed for lovers of animation, for lovers of sci-fi.”

“We wanted to be that little brother, little sister that smacked the bigger sibling and says don’t underestimate us,” added Dan Hageman.

San Diego Comic-Con 2021, the second Comic-Con@Home edition of the beloved pop culture event, kicks off its three-day run Friday.

The free online event, which runs through Sunday, isn't anywhere near as packed with panels as the famed in-person Sdcc usually is, but a decent number of studios and networks will still be hosting Q&As and digital screenings for their TV shows and movies.

As TheWrap reported exclusively earliest this month, HBO (which did present at the 2020 event) will be skipping this year's online con, but its sibling streaming service HBO Max is presenting a virtual event for the show, "gen:lock."

Other notable absentees from the second (and hopefully last) pandemic-forced virtual San Diego Comic-Con include Marvel Studios and DC Films, both of which did not attend the first Comic-Con@Home last year.

This summer’s San Diego Comic-Con once again invites fans to sit on their couches and enjoy the pop culture extravaganza from the safety of their homes. Starting Friday, July 23 at 10 a.m. Pt, Paramount+’s Comic-Con slate will feature sessions with the cast and producers from Star Trek: Prodigy and Star Trek: Lower Decks, the streaming services’ two animated Star Trek series. Prodigy, which is the first Star Trek animated kids series, will kick off the presentation with Lower Decks set to follow.

The Star Trek: Prodigy presentation will be the inaugural panel for the upcoming kids series. Paramount Plus and Nickelodeon announced on Monday that Ella Purnell, Brett Gray, Rylee Alazraqui, Dee Bradley Baker, Angus Imrie and Jason Mantzoukas will make up the main voice cast for “Star Trek: Prodigy,” the animated series set to premiere on Paramount Plus later this year. They’ll join Kate Mulgrew, who is reprising her role from “Star Trek: Voyager” as Kathryn Janeway.
