Served as a Justice of the Supreme court from April 17, 1939 until November 12, 1975.
Co-authored a paper with J. Howard Marshall II while both were at Yale in the 1930s entitled "A Factual Study of Bankruptcy Administration and Some Suggestions".
His 3rd wife was 41 years his junior; his 4th wife was 44 years his junior.
