Ira Dubey is an Indian actress who is popular for playing various roles in hindi films and TV series. She was born in Delhi and majored in theatre studies at Yale University and returned to India to pursue acting professionally in 2004.
Ira has acted in over a dozen theatrical productions with the Primetime Theatre Co., who's artistic director is, actress, director and producer Lillete Dubey, including in 30 Days in September, by Mahesh Dattani, Wedding Album by Girish Karnad which has completed over three hundred shows worldwide, and the critically acclaimed one-woman show , Heather Raffo's, 9 Parts of Desire for which Dubey has received extremely favourable reviews both in India and abroad.
Dubey has worked prolifically on stage in other prominent roles: Laura in Tennessee Williams Glass Menagerie directed by Rajjit Kapur, Portia in William Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice directed by Vikram Kapadia, Nora in Henrik Ibsen's, A Doll's House directed by Pushan Kripalani, Joanne in Aaron Sorkin's A Few Good Men directed by Nadir Khan, and Hedda in Henrik Ibsen's Hindi adaptation of Hedda Gabler , Hardit Kaur Gill, directed by KK Raina , produced by Ila Arun amongst others.
Her film credits include the popular rom-com Aisha starring Sonam Kapoor, the coming of age indie-drama M Cream, socio-political independent thriller, Shehjar, and the mental health related blockbuster, Dear Zindagi starring Alia Bhatt and Shahrukh Khan. Dubey was nominated for a Filmfare Best Actress award for her performance in the short film, Bin Bulaye in 2019 and again for Best Supporting actress for the web show, Potluck in 2022. She has acted in Raja Menon's Ba Ba Black Sheep, Abbas Mustaan's Penthouse, Sooni Taraporvala's Whack Girls, Hansal Mehta's hit show Scoop on Netflix amongst others. She will next be seen in Sahir Raza's hit show Illegal S3 & Nikhil Advani's Freedom At Midnight.
In addition to acting, Dubey has been a film-critic, talk-show host, brand presenter and voice over artist. In 2021, she produced and acted in a short film The Daughter with Naseerudin Shah and launched her production company Lila Naatak Company. The film is now streaming on Jiocinema. In the fall of 2023, Lila Naatak company premiered Koel Purie's tongue in cheek, original play on motherhood MUMMY'S DEAD, LONG LIVE MUMMY! in India. The company is developing two feature films and a web series as well as a theatre production of William Shakespeare's King Lear starring Naseerudin Shah directed by Rehaan Engineer, slated to open end of 2024.
