António Camelier
Set against the historical backdrop of the 1492 Alhambra Decree, The 2000 Exiled Jewish Children follows the harrowing journey of thousands of Sephardic Jews expelled from Spain and seeking refuge in Portugal. What begins as a promise of temporary asylum quickly descends into persecution, betrayal and tragedy. Families are torn apart, belongings sold for scraps, and hopes for safety shattered. The story centres on the forced deportation of two thousand Jewish children to the island of São Tomé, where they are baptised, separated from their parents, and shipped across the ocean in inhuman conditions. Told through powerful visuals and haunting narration, the film depicts their suffering, resilience, and the silent horror of a forgotten chapter in Portuguese history.
