15 Brilliant Nostalgia-Inducing Asian Movies
Image
Cinema is the ideal medium for awakening nostalgia, a sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past, as it seamlessly combines evocative images, sounds, songs, styles, and places that transport viewers to another time. Through its powerful visual and auditory storytelling, films have a unique ability to rekindle memories of past eras, childhood, or simpler moments in life. Nostalgic movies often reflect cultural trends, iconic moments, and heart-warming themes, allowing audiences to emotionally reconnect with their own personal histories or with bygone periods.

This list highlights some nostalgia-inducing films that, through lush productions or skilful era recreation, evoke feelings and memories you might not realize you had. These films romanticize the passage of time and the loss of fleeting moments, using vivid imagery and sound to summon a deep connection to the past—even when this past is a turbulent one, or one you just want to lose yourself in.

Film Review: Anita (2021) by Lok Man Leung
Image
Move aside, Billie Eilish; it’s time for Anita to take back the stage. Lok Man Leung’s “Anita” delivers a loving tribute to Anita Mui — legendary Cantopop singer, actress, and activist. Much like Eilish, Mui too had a seamless start to her career. After years of performing on the streets, Mui underwent a fateful vocal cord surgery that lowered her pitch by an octave. Mui’s new voice charmed audiences though – and she skyrocketed to fame by winning the New Talent Singing Awards at the tender age of 19. She then polished her baritone pitch and outfits with Cantopop factory Capital Artists and fashion heavyweight Eddie Lau. She collaborated with movie icons too – like Stanley Kwan, Leslie Cheung, and Maggie Cheung, to name a few – in her first forays into the film industry. By the age of twenty-six, she already reaped the coveted markers of success in both music and...

Christina Lindberg in Les Impures (1973)
"Ten years of hard work to perfect three minutes on stage, right?" Cmc Pictures has unveiled an official trailer for a biopic drama titled Anita, from Hong Kong filmmaker Lok Man Leung. This recently premiered as the Closing Night film at the Busan Film Festival in Korea, and is opening in theaters worldwide later this week (on November 12th). The film traces the life of Anita Mui, Hong Kong's "disappeared" Cantopop star. The film opens with her final concert and looks back on her life and legacy. The very definition of a cultural icon during Hong Kong's golden age, Anita dedicated almost her whole life to music. Behind stardom, her personal life, passion at work and the love for friends made her an irreplaceable role model as the "Queen of Cantopop". Starring Louise Wong as Anita. This looks like everything you'd expect from a popstar biopic. Here's the main international...

Udine 2015 Review: Political Thriller Helios Aims High But Misfires
Following Cold War, an interesting and surprisingly bureaucratic action film, Sunny Luk and Longman Leung strive for bigger and louder with Helios, an overambitious and convoluted thriller that had its international premiere at the 17th Udine Far East Film Festival. The film starts off in South Korea with Helios (Chang Chen) and his sidekick Messenger (Janice Man) stealing one of the DC8s, the smallest nuclear devices ever created. Looking to retrieve their nuke, a team of South Korean special agents consisting of Choi Min-ho (Ji Jin-hee) and Park Woo-cheol (Choi Si-won) go to Hong Kong where the weapon is about to be traded. There, they're joined by Shim Mi-kyung (Yoon Ji-ni) and together join forces with the local police force - task leader Lee Yin-ming...

'Helios' ('Chek Do'/'Chi Dao'): Film Review
Lok Man Leung
Mixing deafening explosions, bone-crunching fisticuffs and a setting dripping with near-apocalyptic fatalism, Helios boasts all the ingredients necessary to qualify as the ultimate Hong Kong action thriller. Beyond this sensory overload, co-helmers Longman Leung and Sunny Luk have also reproduced, if not amplified, the flaws typical of recent entries in the genre: just like in their 2012 policier Cold War, implausible twists and ill-informed views of real-world power dynamics undermine what should have been an audacious attempt to fuse pyrotechnics and politics. The much heftier $26-million budget, nearly double that of their directorial debut

As the name implies the festival presents new and select films from several countries including Japan, South Korea, Thailand, the Philippines, China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Our fifth and final look at the films of Nyaff 2013 explores the wars being fought on the front lines of three very different battlefields. Cold War (2012) Movie Review
The biggest, most hyped and eagerly awaited Hong Kong thriller of the year arrives in the form of “Cold War”, written and directed by first-timers Longman Leung and Sunny Luk. Backed by a massive marketing campaign clearly trying to position it as the new “Infernal Affairs”, the police corruption film is certainly an ambitious affair, with an amazing cast of top stars headlined by Aaron Kwok and Tony Leung Ka Fai, supported by the likes of Eddie Peng (“Tai Chi”), Aarif Lee (“Bruce Lee, My Brother”), Gordon Lam (“Motorway”) and Charlie Young (“Floating City”), with Michael Wong and the immortal Andy Lau on hand for cameo appearances. The effort seems to have paid off, with the film emerging as the biggest Hong Kong money maker of 2012, in addition to having been nominated for a long list of gongs at the Hong Kong Film Awards. The film kicks off with the...

Cold War and The Bullet Vanishes Top Hk Film Award Nominations
The nominations for this year's Hong Kong Film Awards were announced earlier today, and predictably, star-studded cop drama Cold War scored 12 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director nods for its first-time helmers Longman Leung and Sunny Luk. More suprising was that Law Chi Leung's The Bullet Vanishes scored the exact same number of nominations, and goes head-to-head with Cold War in nine of those categories. In third place, with 8 nominations, is Felix Chong and Alan Mak's The Silent War, although it failed to secure a Best Picture nod. That category is filled out by Dante Lam's The Viral Factor, Soi Cheang's Motorway and Pang Ho Cheung's Vulgaria. The Best Director nominees follow suit, with the notable exception of Pang, who receives a nomination...

Counterpoint Review: Cold War Brings a Spark to the Boardroom
After its world premiere in Korea at last month's Busan International Film Festival, Longman Leung and Sunny Luk's much-touted directorial debut Cold War finally opens on home turf. Originally slated for a summer release, before being pushed back to mid-October and then again to 8 November, the film was eventually unveiled to a home crowd last night, as opening film of the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival. After reading Pierce Conran's review from Biff, my expectations were pretty low, and perhaps it is because of this that Cold War actually proved to be an overall engaging and entertaining cop drama. Pierce's main concern with the film was its over-reliance on grand spectacle and hollow bombast, rather than substantive, character-based drama: "Over-produced and austere, it features strong and...

Busan 2012: Best of the Fest
Lok Man Leung
As the 17th edition of Biff comes to a close, a handful of entries from around the globe managed to stand out amid the 300-plus films at the fest this year. The festival started strong, if not Korean, with the Opening presentation, Cold War (Hong Kong), a slick procedural that doubles as a subversive exercise in unorthodoxy. The cops-n-robbers actioner was a polished slice of the kind of cinema Hong Kong has traditionally excelled at, and directors Longman Leung and Sunny Luk would appear to have bright futures. Moving into Biff’s signature programs — the competitive New

With an all star cast - Andy Lau, Tony Leung Ka Fai, Aaron Kwok just scratch the surface - and its high octane story of corruption, Longman Leung and Sunny Luk's Cold War will almost certainly be the biggest film of the year to come out of Hong Kong. And to help make it so distributors Edko Films have just released one final trailer to spread the word.In Asia's safest city, the police have long been untouchable. Teaser Trailer for the Chinese Thriller Cold War Features Interviews, Behind-the-Senes Footage
The first clip for directing duo Longman Leung and Sunny Luk’s upcoming actin/thriller “Cold War” is interesting in that it only contains interviews and behind-the-scenes footage. Although it’s kind of cool to hear what the cast and crew have to say about the project, I’m more interested in seeing footage of stars Aaron Kwok and Tony Leung Ka Fai being total badasses. I don’t think that’s too much to ask, right? The bald head makes Leung look severely dangerous, and I’m pretty curious to see his character in action. As always, a handy synopsis to light your way: In Asia’s safest city, the police have long been untouchable. Approaching midnight in Hong Kong, police headquarters receives an anonymous call: a fully-loaded police van carrying the forces, most advance equipment and five highly trained officers has disappeared off the grid. The hijackers possess direct knowledge of police procedures.
