Performances

Room Audition: 'Who's Lovin' You' by The Miracles/Jackson 5

Cheryl: "I'm lovin' you! Seriously, that was unbelievable. Your little Spice Girls doll, I'm like, 'okay'. Then you sung and I was like, 'Oh my god'. You know what, biggest example why to not judge a book by its cover. That told me."

Arena Audition: 'Try A Little Tenderness' by Otis Redding

Louis: "It's moments like this and somebody like you that makes this job worthwhile. I loved every single note of that, and you've got so much soul."

Julianne Moore in Still Alice (2014)
Hollywood — It was an emotional evening at the Egyptian Theatre Wednesday night as "Still Alice" finally came "home." Co-directors and husbands Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland are longtime Los Angelinos and the latter remarked how both men had spent many nights watching films in this same venue, which is the Hollywood home of the American Cinematheque. More importantly, this AFI Fest screening afforded Glatzer, who is in advance stages of Als, to finally see the movie on the big screen with an audience. He missed the amazing reception at the Toronto Film Festival. He missed the Rome Film Festival. He missed the Hamptons Film Festival. He was not going to miss seeing "Still Alice" in his hometown. Based on Lisa Genova's bestselling novel, "Alice" chronicles the heartbreaking progression of early on set Alzheimer's disease for Dr. Alice Howard (Julianne Moore), a 50-year-old accomplished Columbia University professor and mother of three grown children.

Shelley Smith was voted off 'The X Factor' tonight (20.10.13). The 34-year-old van driver, who survived a sing-off against Lorna Simpson last week, became the second act to leave this year's series after landing in the bottom two against Kingsland Road. Shelley performed 'Stop' by Sam Brown, while the boyband performed 'Try' by Pink in a bid to stay in the competition. Shelley's mentor, Sharon Osbourne, begged Louis Walsh to save her act after Gary Barlow and Nicole Scherzinger opted to save Kingsland Road, who were placed in the bottom two after a 'Flash Vote' on Saturday night (19.10.13), but the Irish judge...

'X Factor': Shelley Smith eliminated as Katy Perry, Robin Thicke perform
The X Factor has eliminated its second finalist of the series.

Shelley Smith became the latest act to exit the show following a sing-off with Kingsland Road. The result means that Sharon Osbourne has only one finalist remaining in her Overs category.

Kingsland Road became the series' latest 'Flash Vote' nominee during Saturday's (October 19) 'Love and Heartache'-themed show.

Osbourne opted to send Kingsland Road home, while Gary Barlow chose to protect his own act by sending home Smith. Meanwhile, Nicole Scherzinger admitted that she had to support the boyband as it was their first time in the sing-off.

The decision rested with Louis Walsh who after deliberation - and pleas from Osbourne to save her act - chose to send home the Overs singer.

The judges praised both acts for their sing-off performances. Kingsland Road performed a rendition of Pink's 'Try', while Smith took on Sam Brown's 'Stop'.

Jorma Taccone To Direct Spy Guys, Another New Line Action Comedy
I will assume that you have nothing against the title, so I’ll get straight to the point with this report. Jorma Taccone, cute SNL guy who also starred alongside Kristen Wiig in that MacGruber thing, is now on board to direct another action comedy titled Spy Guys for New Line. Is this going to be a new MacGruber only without Wiig, or what?

I’ll be honest with you – I still have no idea what Taccone plans to do with the whole thing. Apparently, he will try to make some kind of mix between Ocean’s Eleven, True Lies and Mission: Impossible. With one little catch – it’s going to be a funny action.

Here’s what I know so far: story will center on a CIA operative who, while attending a friend’s wedding in Europe, is framed and becomes an enemy of the state. Don’t know about you,...

New Line Buys ‘Spy Guys’ Pitch
Adam Sztykiel at an event for Rampage : Hors de contrôle (2018)
Breaking: New Line has bought Spy Guys, an action comedy pitch to be scripted by Due Date scribe Adam Sztykiel. Jorma Taccone will direct and John Rickard will produce through his Rickard Pictures banner along with the Lonely Island Boys. While attending a friend’s wedding in Europe, a CIA operative is framed and becomes an enemy of the state. Now on his own, he’s forced to reveal his true identity to his average Joe buddies to enlist their help. When they aid his escape, they become wanted as accomplices and must go on the run together to clear their names. This is a big fun movie in the along the lines of Ocean’s 11 meets Mission: Impossible, and the hope is that Taccone will attract a hot young ensemble cast. Taccone, who was part of the team responsible for all those SNL Digital Shorts, helmed MacGruber. Rickard has...

Song Of The Day: Divine Fits is 'Nice,' combining Spoon with Wolf Parade
Britt Daniel
I wasn't sure how I felt about the first offering from the Divine Fits -- the trio-combo of Britt Daniel (Spoon), Dan Boeckner (Wolf Parade) and Sam Brown (New Bomb Turks) -- but now I think their forthcoming full-length might be rather nice. "Would That Not Be Nice" definitely scratches the Spoon itch, after the new-wavey minor discotheque of initial offering "My Love Is Real." That latter tune will be up for purchase as a single on July 31 with exclusive non-album B-side "I Was Born In A Laundromat." My Love Is... Clean? The new, as-yet-untitled album from Divine Fits was...

Indie rock supergroup Divine Fits announce debut record, stream first single
Mathematically speaking, the formula used to form a supergroup seems like sound logic. Add one talented musician to another, and watch their success rate multiply. But if supergroup history tells us anything, it’s that arithmetic precision has little to do with creative collaborations. If it really worked that way, Slash’s Snakepit would have yielded better results. Spoon’s Britt Daniel, Wolf Parade’s Dan Boeckner, and New Bomb Turks' Sam Brown have combined their talents to produce a much more favorable outcome. When the three become one they go by the name Divine Fits, and have just announced ...

Here's Anthony Bourdain's "A Krampus Carol" that was banned by the Travel Channel
Acid-tongued celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations Holiday Show will be airing tonight, and judging by a recent blog post of Bourdain's, it's going to be a lively, ribald affair. Bourdain wrote: "What do Norah Jones, Christopher Walken, the band "****ed Up, Vegan Black Metal Chef Sam Brown, nightmare of Eastern European folklore Krampus, the Catalonian Pooping Log, Dave Arnold, chefs Lidia Bastianich, April Bloomfield, Kurt Gutenbrunner, Eder Montero, Alexandra Raij, Carlos Llaguno Morales, and the voices of Adam Richman and Andrew Zimmern have in common? They all foolishly agreed to appear in our scandalous, dark, action-packed fever dream of a Holiday Show which airs this Monday, December 12th at 10 Pm — when, presumably, the kiddies will be asleep." Even if the kiddies are dozing peacefully, the Travel Channel still felt that the stop-motion, animated short featuring Krampus (a demonic, mythical, children-punishing creature feared [...]...

Adele and creative trio Canadá triumph at UK Music Video awards 2011
Best indie video goes to Manchester Orchestra while Spike Jonze named best director – twice – at ceremony in London

Adele, an American film director and three upstarts from Barcelona were among the winners at the UK Music Video awards on Tuesday night. The London gala celebrated the best music videos made in the country and abroad, recognising "creativity and technical excellence" – not just YouTube views.

"Some amazing music videos have been made in the past year," said David Knight, editorial director for the fourth annual awards. There has been "a resurgence of the medium as a creative force", he said, in spite of the "very challenging budgets" of many projects. While the night saw wins for blockbuster acts including Depeche Mode, Arcade Fire and Jay-z and Kanye West, many smaller artists were also rewarded, including the Shoes, Is Tropical and Wave Machines.

Most of the UK Music Video awards are given out in three tiers – UK,...

Adele's 'Rolling In The Deep': A Vma Cheat Sheet
Director Sam Brown walks us across the shattered glass in this stunning, if low-key Video of the Year nominee.

By Gil Kaufman

Adele in her video "Rolling in the Deep"

Photo: Columbia Records

Sometimes less is more. Case in point: Adele's soft-touch clip for her smash breakthrough hit "Rolling in the Deep."

Absent flashy special effects and elaborate set pieces, the clip, literally, has the British singer sitting in a chair and belting the soul-stirring tune as scenes of elegant destruction take place around her. The low-key approach was more than enough to help make 21 the year's best-selling album to date and garner Adele a whopping seven nominations at Sunday's VMAs.

Acclaimed Vma-winning director Sam Brown (Jay-z's "On to the Next One," Corinne Bailey Rae's "Put Your Records On") said he created the visually stunning clip in collaboration with the singer, who was a fan of the Jigga video and sought him out.

Miley Cyrus to Pull Double Duty in God-Themed Comedy for Paramount
After taking a short break from acting to focus on her Gypsy Heart tour, Miley Cyrus is now ready to make her return to the acting world since the tour has come to an end. Rumor has it, the former "Hannah Montana" star is attached to an untitled comedy pitch for Paramount Pictures.

Miley is said to not only star in the big screen project but also serve as one of the producers. She will produce it with her mother Tish Cyrus via their Hope Town Entertainment banner. The daughter/mother duo will team up with another producer Andrew Panay, whose credits include "Wedding Crashers" and "When in Rome".

Other details about the movie are still scarce, but The Hollywood Reporter suggested it will be a high-concept one which "involves a broken promise to God." The scripts will be penned by Sam Brown and Jack Angelo. Serving as executive producers...

Alden Ehrenreich Cast In ‘Stoker’; Reese Witherspoon Starring In ‘Wish List’; Miley Cyrus In Paramount’s God Comedy
Alden Ehrenreich might want to thank Francis Ford Coppola for starting his career. Even though Steven Spielberg had a big hand in helping him get attention, this is a guy that went from basically being a complete unknown to the star of Coppola‘s Tetro, and he also has a role in the director’s upcoming Twixt. A part in an upcoming project that we’re anticipating quite a bit has just come his way, and it can only be taken as a good sign for him.

Variety says that the actor has joined the cast of Park Chan-wook‘s Stoker, where he’ll be playing “Whip Taylor, an alpha dog on the football team” that shows kindness toward the character played by Mia Wasikowska, who is picked on by his friends. That doesn’t seem to last long, because he “eventually forces himself on her.” The cast he’s...

Miley Cyrus to Produce and Star in Godly Comedy
Paramount has picked up an untitled comedy pitch by Sam Brown and Jack Angelo.  The reason: Miley Cyrus is attached to star and produce.  The precise details are under wraps, but THR hears the premise involves "a broken promise to God."  Andrew Panay (When in Rome), Adam Glass, and Jodi Zuckerman Weiner are on board to produce with Miley's mother Tish Cyrus, who served as producer on The Last Song and her daughter's next feature So Undercover. So Undercover opens later this year, and it will be a good test of Cyrus' draw outside the Hannah Montana universe.  The Last Song grossed a solid $89 million worldwide, but the young actress is still far from a sure thing.

Miley Cyrus Will Find (and Possibly Anger) God in Religious Comedy
Miley Cyrus is getting religious.

The "Hannah Montana" star will look to the Lord as she signs on to star in and produce a new "God-themed" comedy, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Details on the untitled project are currently under wraps, though the pitch by writing duo Sam Brown and Jack Angelo apparently involves broken promises to God and the ensuing disastrous (and probably wacky) consequences.

The film is set up at Paramount, with Cyrus and her mother Tish set to produce under their Hope Town Entertainment banner. No word on a director yet... or what inevitable cute young fella will be Miley's co-star.

We thought Miley's next movie would be some R-rated sex-and-drugs drama, a cathartic and indulgent farewell to the days of "Hannah Montana." Apparently we were wrong.

Miley Cyrus was last seen in the father-daughter drama, "The Last Song," co-starring Greg Kinnear and "Hunger Games" hunk Liam Hemsworth.

Earlier this week, Adele continued her march toward complete and utter global domination when she picked up seven Video Music Awards nominations, for her hit "Rolling in the Deep," including nods for Video of the Year, Best Female Video and Best Pop Video.

That tally tied the British belter with Kanye West for the second-most Vma noms this year (they both trail Katy Perry, who leads with nine), and only further cemented her status as 2011's biggest breakout star. And so, on Friday (July 22), she took her to blog ... not only to express her excitement about the nominations, but also to reveal her rather interesting celebratory plans.

"Flabbergasted about the Vma nominations! Thank you, thank you MTV!" Adele wrote in a post. "I'm thinking about...

In the past four seasons, The Whitest Kids U Know has built up a devoted and fervent following while also impressing the critics - Entertainment Weekly hailed it as "bizarre, edgy, and hilarious," while the San Francisco Chronicle enthused "Wkuk wallows frequently in potty-mouth humor and somehow makes it seem almost sophisticated." The series pushes sketch comedy to a whole new level of depraved genius and this farewell season ups the ante like never before.

This season, Trevor Moore, Zach Cregger, Sam Brown, Darren Trumeter and Timmy Williams are providing sardonic cracks on politics, gender, suburbia, and sex while featuring some of their most creative,...

Last week, MTV News kicked off our countdown of the Top 25 Songs of 2010, a list that's already featured the likes of Rick Ross and Robyn, Lady Gaga and Kanye West, to name just a few. On Monday, we began rolling out our Top 10 — starting with Gaga's "Telephone" and rolling on to Eminem and Rihanna's "Love the Way You Lie."

Now, we're set to unveil our pick for #8 ... Jay-z's "On to the Next One," a diabolical track that floored pretty much everybody, thanks in no small part to its snarl, its swagger and, yes, its sorta-Satanic video too.

First things first: Yes, this song is from an album that came out in 2009. And, yes, it was technically released to radio in December of that same year.

X Factor: Paije Richardson will ‘work, work, work’ to become a popstar
Paije Richardson has promised to “work, work, work” to achieve his dream of becoming a popstar.

The 20-year-old, who was the ninth act to be booted off ‘The X Factor’ last night (21.11.10), said he is now going to concentrate on singing live and gaining more experience in the music business.

The former cinema worker – who was sent home by the judges following his performance of Sam Brown’s hit ‘Stop’ in a sing-off against Cher Lloyd – told ITV1′s ‘Daybreak’: “I’m going to keep trying my best and doing whatever comes around and work, work, work until I achieve what I want.”

The Londoner also said he felt “incredibly happy” that controversial contestant Katie Waissel survived the public vote, and on Cher’s survival he added: “She’s a great talent and she deserves her place. I’m proud of her and I hope she does well.”

Paije Richardson leaves X Factor
Paije Richardson was voted off 'The X Factor' last night (21.11.10). The 20-year-old pop hopeful - who found himself in the bottom two alongside Cher Lloyd after the pair failed to impress the viewers with their versions of 'Let It Be' and 'Imagine' respectively - was forced to leave the ITV1 talent show after judges Simon Cowell, Cheryl Cole and Louis Walsh chose to save Cher. During the sing-off, Paige - who was saved by his mentor Dannii Minogue - sang Sam Brown hit 'Stop', while Cher performed 'Stay' by Shakespears Sister. After they had both performed, host Dermot O'Leary asked the judges who ..

Paije Richardson makes 'X Factor' exit
Paije Richardson has become the ninth act to be voted out of The X Factor. The former cinema employee pulled out a crowd-pleasing rendition of Sam Brown's 'Stop' after finding himself in the bottom two against Cher Lloyd, who reprised her emotional "performance of the season" from two weeks ago, 'Stay' by Shakespears Sister. When Dermot O'Leary turned to the judges, all four agreed that neither act deserved to be in the sing-off based on last night's performances. First Simon Cowell decided that he was "gonna go with the person who I've continually supported" and voted to save Lloyd. Cheryl Cole quickly echoed Cowell's decision, backing her own act at the expense of Richardson, before Minogue followed suit and voted out Lloyd in order to save her (more)...
