Though "The Dark Knight" is obviously the more successful of the Christopher Nolan movies, and one of the 100 best movies of all time according by our standards, some believe it's not the best Batman movie Nolan made. That honor could go to "Batman Begins," a movie that feels more like a comic book movie than a James Bond story, a movie with fantastic production design that doesn't just look like New York City or Chicago. Instead, the film introduces Kowloon-inspired slum district of the Narrows that has become a big part of Batman mythos. "Batman Begins" also has one of the best Bat-suits in film and some incredible visuals in its recreations of all-time great scenes from Frank Miller's "Batman: Year One."

Sick of multiverses yet? Too bad, DC and Warner Brothers are banking on it. Based on the freshest reports, DC Studios' creative chief James Gunn is counting on fan loyalty to float two concurrent Bruce Wayne timelines. How is that going to work? Nobody knows yet, not even the people in charge. Is Gotham City big enough for two Batmans? Or is it Batmen?
WB is not averse to betting it all. On a losing streak at the moment, they've reached the logical endpoint of the Dceu, an exhausted brand, run by a company that has found itself shooting blanks, overextended, and facing financial doldrums thanks to years of bungled IPs and acquisitions. Their conclusion is as preposterous as it is pragmatic: doubling down on The Dark Knight. Or, more fitting to our riverboat gambler analogy, WB's splitting their aces, playing two hands simultaneously. WB Discovery CEO David Zaslav is...

Warner Bros. Games is unfortunately in a pretty complicated spot. Recently, it was revealed they canceled a Flash video game and indefinitely delayed Monolith's Wonder Woman after a big creative reboot. Besides, support for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League recently ended as the title failed to meet expectations.
So how does Warner's video game division come out of such a grim spot? Well, by turning on the Bat-Signal and waiting for salvation, of course. That's right: It appears DC is gearing up for a big comeback at the hands of their most beloved character.
Rocksteady reportedly working on a Batman Beyond video game

In Christopher Nolan's "Batman Begins," the defining question of the film is: "Why do we fall?" The answer, which Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) learns again and again, is "So we can learn to pick ourselves back up."
The commonly cited influence on "Batman Begins" is "Batman: Year One" by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli, the definitive origin of Batman. The other two parts of the "Dark Knight" trilogy have been similarly tied to famous Batman stories: "The Dark Knight" is "The Long Halloween" plus "The Killing Joke," featuring a Joker (Heath Ledger) who wants to break Gotham City's soul and succeeds in turning Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) into Two-Face. Then "The Dark Knight Rises" closes out the myth by combining "Knightfall," "The Dark Knight Returns," and "No Man's Land" to bring Batman low so he can climb back up to meet his greatest and last challenge.

The sprawling lore of "Stargate Sg-1" can get really confusing after a point. A lot happens in the Syfy channel show's 10-season run, and chaos is bound to follow when you throw alternate timelines and resurrected characters into the mix. During the adventures of the series' titular crew, they cross paths with the Goa'uld, aquatic symbiotes who can take over and control the bodies of other species. Nothing good ever comes from using this ability, as the Goa'uld feel no remorse while enslaving worlds or presenting themselves as the galaxy's tyrannical saviors. They have leaders, of course, known as System Lords, who use their near-immortality to subjugate humanity, such as the false god Ra (Jaye Davidson) in Roland Emmerich's "Stargate."
Although all System Lords are dangerous, the most formidable among them is Anubis, who can easily be classified as one of the biggest antagonists of "Stargate Sg-1." In fact,...

The millions of people who've seen the recent Dunemovies without having read Frank Herbert's book beforehand probably noticed an overwhelming number of similarities to other storied franchises. That's not a coincidence. The 1965 novel isn't the origin point of sci-fi or fantasy literature, but it's arguably the most successful and influential in its category.
Dune represented a huge step up in terms of epic worldbuilding and episodic storytelling, and it introduced plot arcs, character archetypes, and genre elements that are so common today that Herbert's originality can easily be taken for granted. Countless books, TV series, and films have been inspired by Dune, including Star Trek, The Chronicles of Riddick, Miyazaki's Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, and even Futurama. The following franchises, however, did more than riff on Herbert's ideas or parody the tropes he created. Each one has such strong parallels to Dune that without it, they may never have existed.

Sun Ra Arkestra leader Marshall Allen has released his debut solo album, New Dawn. Stream it below.
In the process, he’s earned two Guinness World Records: one for being the oldest person to release a debut album and the other for oldest person to release an album of new material. Both records were previously held by Tony Bennett for Love for Sale, his 2021 collaborative album with Lady Gaga.
Made with lifelong friend and fellow Arkestra member Knoel Scott, the new album spans seven tracks and features an appearance from Neneh Cherry on the previously released title track. If you prefer a physical copy, it’s also available on CD or vinyl.
Recording on the project started in May 2024 — just days after Allen’s 100th birthday — resulting in what’s described in a press release as “a love letter to spacetime that channels a century of musical transience and transcendence.

Guy Pearce has made a new revelation about his performance in 2000’s Memento: “I’m shit in that movie.”
During a recent interview with The Sunday Times, the actor got candid about his thoughts on his role as Leonard Shelby in the Christopher Nolan-directed film. “I watched Memento the other day and I’m still depressed. I’m shit in that movie,” he confessed.
Pearce said he’d “never thought that before, but I did this Q&a of Memento earlier this month and decided to actually watch the film again. But while it was playing I realized I hate what I did.”
Memento follows Leonard Shelby, an insurance investigator, who suffers from anterograde amnesia and uses notes and tattoos to hunt for the man he thinks killed his wife, which is the last thing he remembers.

As the world prepares to see a new He-Man hit the big screen next year, it has been sadly reported that the voice behind the original animated version of the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe character, John Erwin, has died aged 88. The actor, who began his career working in adverts in the late 1960s, made a number of other appearances, but for many, it was his role as He-Man that he will be most remembered for. As well as leading the show in the role of He-Man, Erwin also played the monstrously dim-witted Beast Man.
According to PR firm Celebworx, who represented the star, Erwin actually died last month, “around December 20,” of natural causes. The announcement not only drew reactions from many children of the ‘80s, but also Erwin’s costars, Alan Oppenheimer, who voiced Skeletor, and Melendy Britt, who provided the voice of She-Ra. In a...

It seems like Sony and Santa Monica Studio are taking one of PlayStation’s most beloved names in a new direction. A new report claims that Sony is looking to hire Middle Eastern actors for an upcoming project. This means the franchise could move into the realm of Egyptian mythology.
Imagine Kratos in Egypt, it’d be pretty cool. | Image Credit: Santa Monica Studio
While Sony has yet to confirm, there is a lot of speculation that the project is likely the next installment in the God of War saga. Fans have been patiently waiting for what’s next in Kratos and Atreus’ story after Ragnarök explored Norse mythology. It would sure be interesting to see Egyptian gods like Ra, Anubis, and Osiris alongside Kratos.
Sony’s moves for the next God of War game may have just been revealed Take it with a grain of salt though. | Image Credit:...

Batman: Under the Red Hood is a masterclass on how to tell a compelling, tragic, and epic Batman story. While the animated movie version has overshadowed the comic book it was adapted from, both versions are still well regarded as some of the greatest Batman content ever.
There are many who would even say that the movie version is flawless, but upon my millionth rewatch of the movie, an idea came to me that changed my outlook on Red Hood's endgame of getting The Joker out of Arkham to kill him. A great plan, but I see two ways this plan could've backfired in a big way, and with that in mind, let's look at why those ways probably shouldn't have worked.
Explanation of Plan and Resolution

Stardew Valley is a game full of whimsy and weirdness. With fantasy elements that range from adorable forest spirits helping rejuvenate an economically depressed town to a little mouse that sells hats for no other reason than liking hats, the farming simulator is chock-full of interesting and weird secrets. No hidden secret leads to as strange a prize as the final Lost Book quest, which allows players to collect the three weirdest pieces of furniture in the entirety of Stardew Valley.
While some quests in Stardew Valley do bring players to strange places, like the dangerous Skull Cavern, most only require the player to interact with normal people and normal items. One quest, a series of tasks with no official quest title, has players running all over the valley and Pelican Town to unlock three statues with some of the strangest designs in the entire game. The biopic formula has become rather mundane and uninteresting, save for the few biopics that actually pull us in and dare to do something memorable. But for all their posturing, Better Man is perhaps the weirdest, coolest biopic I’ve seen in recent memory — and most definitely in the least year. Directed by The Greatest Showman’s Michael Gracey, Better Man, which follows the rise of British pop star Robbie Williams, is a spectacle, with many sequences shot like music videos. The spectacle doesn’t mean there’s no heart at the story’s core, and it kept me watching despite being overlong.

Warning: Spoilers for Batgirl #3!The family tree for one of Batman's archenemies is more intricate than most readers may think, and it leads to the forgotten character, Nyssa al Ghul. Bruce Wayne has been in a feud with Ra's al Ghul ever since the latter debuted in 1971, and that feud led to Batman falling in love with Talia, his daughter. That affair, in turn, birthed Batman's son, Damian Wayne, the latest Robin. The al Ghul family has become vital to Batman lore.
However, one oft-forgotten facet of Batman's feud is that Ra's al Ghul has another daughter named Nyssa, but DC Comics gladly reminds readers of that fact in Batgirl #3 by Tate Brombal, Takeshi Miyazawa, Mike Spicer, and Tom Napolitano. Nyssa Raatko (sometimes Nyssa al Ghul) returns to DC canon as the leader of the League of Shadows, seemingly co-opting the sect with her sister Talia.

James Gunn’s Dcu is officially underway and it is high time a few casting choices are made for some key characters in the universe. The filmmaker and co-chief of DC Studios has maintained that no greenlight will be given for a project unless it has a solid script and seems to be giving time to set up solo films. However, all of them need to lead up to a huge villain.
Josh Brolin, who played Thanos in the MCU, recently shared a fanart of himself in the design of Darkseid. This fueled the rumors that Brolin was still in talks with Gunn after he refused the offer to play Hal Jordan a.k.a Green Lantern in the Dcu. While casting Brolin as Darkseid, who is basically DC’s Thanos is not a good choice, there are other actors who fit the bill.

Warning: Spoilers for Batgirl #3!Some Batman fans don't realize that the League of Shadows and the League of Assassins are two separate entities. Ra's al Ghul always had the League of Assassins, but when adapted for the screen in Batman Begins and later Arrow, the organization was renamed the League of Shadows. In hopes of synchronizing the comics with adaptations, DC introduced the League of Shadows in the comics as a separate group, furthering confusion.
Batgirl #3 by Tate Brombal, Takeshi Miyazawa, Mike Spicer, and Tom Napolitano brings the League of Shadows back into DC Universe canon. Cassandra Cain reluctantly teams up with Lady Shiva, and after taking refuge with her Order of Shiva, she discovers that her mother is running the current iteration of the League of Shadows.
Some fans may assume that the League of Shadows is just the League of Assassins under a different title, like in DC's movies and TV shows.

Schwarzenegger. Stallone. Van Damme. Gibson. Snipes. Ford. When you make a list of the most popular action heroes of all time, there’s another name that needs to be added to that list – Liam Neeson. Over the last sixteen years, he’s headlined a neverending series of action thrillers that have propelled him to a much higher echelon of fame than he’d ever been on before, with him only ever becoming an action star once he was fifty-six. Ultimately, it was all due to a low-budget, European-financed action flick, which came very close to going direct-to-video and reached theatres in Europe a full year before it opened in North America. That movie is Taken, and we’re going to tell you how it revitalized the career of a man who – at the time – was generally considered a top-tier character actor with limited box office appeal. I, like so many other fans of comic books and superheroes, love Batman. His story is one that remains inspiring even if the circumstances around his life aren't relatable. Nevertheless, the idea of a normal person pushing against the odds every night is something we all endure, and no matter how outlandish his stories can be, it grounds the character in a profound way. But for a character that explored every entertainment medium available, it would take almost 40 years since Batman: The Movie for the Caped Crusader to be explored in a more grounded way.

Star Wars fans spent much of Summer 2024 speculating on the details of a mystery with The Acolyte, but the end of the year is bringing on even greater intrigue as we follow the adventures of the Skeleton Crew. The TV shows from the Disney+ platform seem to be drawing out the potential for mystery, and we enjoy the things we learn or guess in advance. 2024 saw DC give one prominent Batman villain a death that was effectively impossible in The Dark Knight trilogy, opening some interesting windows in terms of looking at what different paths could have been taken. Live-action Batman movies have no qualms about killing off their villains, despite the Caped Crusader's own rule against murdering his opponents. From Max Shreck being brutally electrocuted to death in Batman Returns to Bane being shot point-blank by Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises' ending, being a Batman movie villain isn't something that comes with a promising lifespan.
As such, it's been reasonably common for Batman movie villains to die in their first film appearance, with even The Dark Knight trilogy following this convention to some degree - although the Joker and Scarecrow notably survive the events of their debut movies and seemingly the entire trilogy, albeit with both appearing to end the series incarcerated. 2024 provided...

One of Liam Neeson's worst movies has become a global Netflix hit two years after its release. Beginning his film career in 1978, the Irish actor broke through with his portrayal of Oskar Schindler in Steven Spielberg's acclaimed Holocaust drama Schindler's List in 1993, which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. From there, Neeson took on several roles in blockbuster movies, including Qui-Gon Jinn in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, Ra's al Ghul in Batman Begins, and Aslan in The Chronicles of Narnia trilogy.
However, starting in 2009, Neeson established himself as a prominent action star with roles in the Taken movies, The A-Team, The Grey, Wrath of the Titans, and Cold Pursuit. He's collaborated multiple times with director Jaume Collet-Serra, starring in four of his action films – Unknown, Non-Stop, Run All Night, and The Commuter. Starring Stephen Arnell as Green Arrow/Oliver Queen, Arrow ran for eight seasons on the CW and was responsible for its own TV universe, the Arrowverse. Although the show started off strong, Arrow eventually lost its way, partly because it was under the weight of being the uniting force of three other shows and countless heroes and villains.
Many fans view Arrow season three as the point at which the series started to lose its footing. However, while season three clearly wasn’t as good as its predecessors, it did have some redeeming qualities. The show was also able to correct its course in season four by making a return to the basics which made its first two seasons so great. It was in season five that Arrow truly lost its way and reached an unfortunate point of no return.

In a recent interview, writer Tom King discusses just how important it is for comic characters to branch out from comics and how the success of The Penguin proves that DC's characters can find success in any medium, from video games to movies and TV - and all the way back to comic books.
While sitting down with Polygon, King talked at length about his upcoming Black Canary and Lady Shiva book, as well as his thoughts on the TV and movies that these characters have appeared in. One of the big things that King stated was just how important TV shows are in getting comic characters in front of a wider audience - which he knows well, especially since he wrote the recent Penguin title, with artist Rafael de Latorre, published by DC Comics. There's a half-serious observation in the Batman fandom that the best Batman actors are the ones who feel like they could also pull off playing the Joker. Take Michael Keaton; you know him as Tim Burton's Batman, but if you want to see him as the Joker, just watch the first movie that Keaton and Burton made together before "Batman" -- namely, "Beetlejuice."
Christian Bale and Robert Pattinson also feel like Dark Knights who could be convincing as the Crown Prince of Crime. Heck, even the late Adam West showed he had some Joker energy in him with his recurring role as the twisted Mayor West on "Family Guy."
There's only one performer who has actually played both Batman and the Joker at the same time, though: voice actor Troy Baker, in the 2019 animated film "Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles."

It's strange to think of Christopher Nolan hustling his way through the streets of 1990s London to shoot his first film, "Following," guerilla-style. The British filmmaker has since become arguably the pre-eminent director of his time, racking up hit after hit without compromising his artistic vision and, with 2023's "Oppenheimer," delivering the first blockbuster to win the Best Picture Oscar in 20 years. Before all of that, though, Nolan was fighting to make a name for himself.
After "Following" caused enough of a buzz to get him recognized in wider circles, the young director was given his first modest studio budget. Rather than spending that money on a more commercially-friendly movie than his $6,000 black and white neo noir, however, he delivered a layered psychological thriller that required audiences' focused attention in order to make any kind of sense whatsoever. 2000's "Memento" was full of intentionally confusing moments, many of which arose...

Christopher Nolan has gained a reputation for being a creature of habit. He is a man of many talents and can visualize and create a scene just as well as he can shoot it with a camera. On top of his stellar capabilities, he has also become known for casting the same actors in different roles throughout his films.

Guy Pearce was not the “guy” for Warner Bros. in the 2000s, apparently.
The actor recalled the brutal feedback his agent received from an unnamed executive at the studio after his lead performance in 2000 film “Memento,” which was directed by Christopher Nolan. Due to the WB executive’s lack of enthusiasm for “The Brutalist” actor, he was essentially blacklisted from working at both the studio and with Nolan. IndieWire has reached out to WB for comment.
Director Nolan began exclusively making films for WB starting with his 2002 psychological thriller “Insomnia.” He parted ways with the studio after the 2020 streaming release of “Tenet”; Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” was a Universal Pictures film, and he is teaming up again with Universal for his new, currently untitled feature.

Liam Neeson's name would certainly be towards the top of the list when listing the biggest action stars working today. Neeson is perhaps best known for the Taken movies, wherein he plays a father who is desperately looking for his kidnapped daughter. Taken is now a movie trilogy, which began in 2008 and concluded in 2014 with Taken 3. Taken was also later adapted into a 2017 TV series starring Clive Standen in Neeson's former role as Bryan Mills.
Taken is far from the only action film that Neeson has become known for, however. He also plays the villain Ra's Al Ghul in two films within Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy, another hugely popular action franchise. Just this year, Neeson was in the action film Absolution, where he played an aging gangster who is trying to forgive himself for his past and restore relationships with his children, only to...

Batman's problems in Gotham can't be solved as easily as calling the Justice League. For many, it's perplexing to see Batman carrying out his mission to save Gotham like a one-man army when he's a card-carrying Justice League founder. Sure, he has the Bat-Family to help, but when DC's quintessential super-team is a distress call away, that should presumably fix all the city's problems in one fell swoop.
Batman: Dark Age #5 by Mark Russell and Michael Allred goes a long way to reiterate how and why the Justice League cannot be the Dark Knight's - or any superhero's - one-stop shop to solve their own personal problems. Batman comes to the League pleading with his friends for help in Gotham, and because there are more pressing matters at hand, the Justice League is forced to turn their friend down.

Since its inception in the 1980s, the Masters of the Universe heroes have been serving up some compelling action, but some are far more powerful than others. With a an action cartoon series, movie specials, and a sister show, this mythical world has spawned some powerful beings. With every episode, Skeletor's evil schemes to take over Greyskull had become more and more elaborate. He-Man and his trusted companions had to outwit his advances and protect the people of Eternia. She-Ra bravely took on Hordak, and they both joined forces to defeat their enemies together.
The series came back a few times, with a reboot in 2002 and another in 2021, as well as more comic book and video game outings. A live-action Masters of the Universe movie reboot is on the way, and the yearning for all things nostalgic continues. This serves as a reminder of how impactful this world has been.

Batman's The Dark Knight trilogy stands to many as the best live-action Batman movies ever, and that is due to intriguing stories, gripping action scenes, and, above all, complex characters. There have been many live-action Batman movies over the years, but when director Christopher Nolan took on Batman Begins, the DC character was not nearly doing as well as he is nowadays when it comes to Batman's theatrical appearances. Before Christian Bale's debut as Bruce Wayne, the last live-action Batman actor was George Clooney.
Clooney's Batman starred in 1997's Batman & Robin, a brighter and goofier take on the Dark Knight, which was not at all what the hero's adventures are supposed to be like. Then came The Dark Knight trilogy, which brought back a darker version of Batman and was loved by audiences and critics alike. Many heroes and villains contributed to the franchise's success, but some more than others.

Warning: Contains Spoilers for Ultimate Black Panther #13! Marvel Comics has no shortage of outstanding villains that never fail to captivate and entertain readers, especially when theyre making life difficult for their designated heroes. However, it cant be denied that, in the grand scheme of things, Marvel villains just dont really matter. Sure, they can cause trouble (sometimes on a cosmic scale), but theyre never really the focus, especially in death. These villains die, they come back, and oftentimes without explanation. Marvel villains serve the story of the hero, not the wider story of the Marvel Universe. At least, until now.

Batman has had countless interpretations in various movies and TV shows, which often make positive changes to the lore of the character and other Gotham city residents. Every comic book movie makes heavy changes to its inspiration, with many comic details often being too difficult to work into the runtime of a film. Batman and Robin have been a dynamic duo since the forties. But their history is fraught with constant death, sacrifice, and in-fighting. There have been many Robins, but none of them have held more dramatic weight to the Batman mythos than Bruce Wayne and Talia al Ghul's son: Damian Wayne. Framed as a potential villain from the start, Robin had quite the redemptive arc - but one dark universe revealed what Damian would have looked like if he had sided with his grandfather, Ra's, instead.

In Roland Emmerich's "Stargate," Special Operations Colonel Jack O'Neil (played by a brilliant Kurt Russell) is as blunt as it gets. When linguist Daniel Jackson (James Spader) is invited to assist with the Stargate mission, O'Neil is frank about his disdain for an outsider involved in such a top-secret mission and exhibits little empathy when Jackson is forced to deal with an ancient civilization alone. However, when things go south, O'Neil is the first to dive into the jaws of danger, guns blazing, taking the initiative to save Jackson from the clutches of the malicious alien, Ra (Jaye Davidson). "Give my regards to King Tut, a**hole!," he yells before crushing an elevator on top of Ra's men to buy enough time for Jackson to get Sha'uri (Mili Avital) to safety.
