Kippenberger began studying at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts in 1972. He was a student of Arnold Hauser and the illustrator and installation artist Franz Erhard Walther. Kippenberger dropped out of his studies. In 1976 he moved to Florence. There he initially painted panel pictures in black and white based on postcards or photographs. The following year he moved back to Hamburg and met the painter Albert Oehlen. There he exhibited the results of his creative period in Florence. In 1978, Martin Kippenberger chose to live in Berlin, where he founded the exhibition space "Kippenberger Büro" together with Giesela Capitain.

A year later, in 1979, he founded the club "SO 36" in Berlin-Kreuzberg and the punk band "Die Grugas". In the same year he founded the group "Luxus" with Christine Hahn and Erich Mitchell in New York. In 1980 he moved to Paris to become a writer. In collaboration with the artist Werner Büttner and Albert Oehlen, book productions and exhibition concepts such as "Truth is Work" (1984) were created. Just a year later he was in the Black Forest and Stuttgart doing artistic work. During this time, Kippenberger created sequences of images in color. In 1983 he lived in Cologne, where his first sculpture designs were created. That year he also lived in Vienna for a time and met the Austrian sculptor Franz West.

Five years later he moved to Madrid and Seville together with the painter Albert Oehlen. Both devoted themselves to painting there. In 1989 Martin Kippenberger moved to Los Angeles. During this time, pictures with a latex coating were created. Following this time, he taught as a visiting professor at the Frankfurt Staedelschule. From 1992 he gave lessons at the comprehensive university in Kassel. He also gave guest lectures at Yale University, Nice and Amsterdam. The first aluminum sculptures were created in 1994. Two years later he was honored with the Käthe Kollwitz Prize, which was worth 10,000 marks. Martin Kippenberger's work followed the movement of Dadaism and Fluxus.

He always tried to work against the traditional conception of art and to question existing concepts of art. His means of doing this included provocation and ridicule, whereby he often went beyond conventional taste. In 1997 he took part in Documenta X in Kassel. Kippenberger's artwork includes sculptures, pictures, performances, drawings, installations, artist books, posters, catalogs and invitation cards, which he often designed with a naive subjectivism. His works include "Oblomov 1" (dated 1990), "Woman on the Swing" (1981), "In the Office" (1982), "Kippenberger-Martin-Köln" (1985), "I keep myself closed" (1989) or "model toscana" (1989).

Martin Kippenberger died on March 7, 1997 as a result of his alcohol consumption in Vienna.
